Russia Begins Operations in Syria: End Game for the US Empire?

The ultimatum that President Bashar Assad must go if there is to be peace in Syria, drawn up by the anti-Assad opposition backed by Saudi Arabia and the West, derailed the latest peace talks in Geneva, Damascus's envoy to the negotiations said.

Damascus: Saudi Arabia, Certain Western States behind Failure of Syria Peace Talks

The eighth round of Syria peace negotiations in Geneva ended in failure, after Damascus officials refused to engage in direct talks with the opposition, which continues to demand the removal of President Bashar al-Assad as a precondition for ending the six-year conflict.

"The Riyadh 2 Communique is a blackmail of the Geneva process," Syrian government Negotiator Bashar Ja’afari told the media, referring to a document adopted during a Syrian opposition summit in the Saudi capital last month, RT reported.

As a result of the conference, attended by 140 participants and backers in the conflict, a communique was adopted insisting that the Syrian president must leave at the start of any transition period following the cessation of hostilities. The conflict has taken more than 400,000 lives.

"Those who drew up the Riyadh 2 statement were the ones who sabotaged this round. I mean by that the other side. I mean the Saudis and the Saudi handlers themselves who are the Western countries. They do not want the Geneva process to succeed."

Ja’afari insisted that the proposal contradicted previous UN resolutions, and said that outside forces wanted to turn Syria into “another Libya or Iraq.”

The Syrian negotiator also criticized the long-time mediator of the talks, Staffan de Mistura, who on Wednesday urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to put pressure on Assad to accept constitutional reforms and fresh elections.

Ja’afari called de Mistura’s words an “error” that could "derail his mandate as a facilitator of the talks, which will have an impact on the Geneva process altogether.”

The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria reported that the US is creating a new army from the remaining pockets of the ISIL and Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) terrorists in Southern Syria in yet another last ditch effort to topple the government in Damascus.

US Creating New Army of Militants to Confront Syrian Gov't
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960925000709

The Russian center said that the US has continued cooperation with the remaining pockets of terrorists despite claims that it is committed to the annihilation of the ISIL in Syria.

The Russian center went on to say that the US military trainer, affiliated to the Elite Forces, has embarked on setting up new units known as New Syrian Army from defected members of the terrorist groups near a refugee camp near the town of Hasaka in Northeastern Syria.

In the meantime, eye-witnesses quoted the US army men as saying that units of the New Syrian Army will be deployed in Southern Syria to fight against the government forces after the newly-recruited fighters accomplish their training in Hasaka.

Relevant reports said on Friday that Syrian Foreign Ministry censured the US-led coalition purportedly fighting the ISIL terrorist group, saying the military alliance was indeed targeting civilian facilities and providing the terrorists with cover.

A long military column of Ahrar al-Sham terrorists has arrived in Northeastern Hama to assist their comrades to slow down the Syrian Army troops' rapid advances towards Idlib province, dissident-affiliated websites reported on Sunday.

The news websites said that Ahrar al-Sham has joined other terrorist groups in Northeastern Hama to prevent the army from advancing towards Idlib province.

The websites went on to say that a long convoy of Ahrar forces arrived in the battlefield in Syriatel hill and joined terrorist front.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have forced young people in Arab-populated regions in some parts of Raqqa province to join the SDF, militant-affiliated websites reported on Sunday.

http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960926001098

The news websites said that the SDF distributed leaflets in al-Tabaqa region in Western Raqqa whose residents are mostly Arabs, announcing their plans for the forced recruitment of young people in the region.

The websites further said that residents of al-Tabaqa, al-Jarniya and al-Mansourah and other villages and regions near them will be included in the SDF's forced recruitment plan.

Local sources reported last month that people in a town in Northeastern Aleppo took to the streets, opposing forced recruitment by the SDF.

The sources said that a large number of residents of the town of Kobani (Ein al-Arab) took to the streets, condemning the SDF's forced recruitment in the region.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) continued their large-scale offensive near the occupied Golan Heights today, capturing new areas that were previously occupied by the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

Led by their elite 42nd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Army struck Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham’s positions east of Mughar Al-Mir this morning, resulting in the capture of several areas from the jihadist rebels in the Beit Jinn pocket.

Among the areas captured by the Syrian Army this morning were the important hilltops of Daher Al-Aswad and Taloul Al-Najjar.

As a result of this advance, the Syrian Army is now on the verge of reaching the eastern corridor of Mughar Al-Mir, which means Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham is nearly encircled inside the town.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) detained suspected members of a terrorist cell linked to ISIL, as a series of weekend bombings was planned in St. Petersburg, with the iconic Kazan Cathedral among the targets.

ISIL Cell Planned Attacks on Kazan Cathedral, Other St. Petersburg Landmarks Foiled by FSB
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960925000398

The attacks were planned to involve “a suicide bomber blowing [himself] up inside a religious facility and the murder of civilians with improvised explosive devises in places of mass gatherings,” the FSB statement said, RT reported.

The cell members were detained overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, the FSB reported.

During the raid, law enforcement agents seized “a large amount of explosive materials, elements of IEDs, automatic arms, ammunition and extremist literature.”

A bomb-making workshop was dismantled as part of the bust, it added.

The statement stressed that the cell was coordinating its plans with ISIL masterminds via a Telegram messenger chat channel.

A suspected terrorist told the court that he was planning an attack on the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, the united press service of St. Petersburg courts announced in a statement.

18-year-old Evgeny Efimov was making improvised explosive devices in a rented garage, until the owner of the property reported his activity to the police.

Efimov, who is accused of illegal production of explosives, will remain in custody until at least February 13, the court ruled. The Kazan Cathedral is one of the most iconic landmarks in St. Petersburg, as well as one of its largest Orthodox churches. It was built between 1801 and 1811.

Earlier this week, FSB head Aleksandr Bortnikov reported foiling a terrorist plot which would have involved bombings during the New Year celebration and upcoming presidential election campaign. The schemes also involved a cell with links to ISIL.

St. Petersburg was the scene of the most recent high-profile terrorist attack in Russia. A suicide bomber blew himself up in April on a metro train as it was traveling between two stations. The attack claimed six lives on the spot and killed the bomber, while eight more victims succumbed to their injuries later. A second IED was left by the perpetrator in another location but was disarmed before it could detonate.

Following an investigation, the FSB also singled out Telegram as the main communication tool used by terrorists to prepare and conduct the metro attack.

A counter-terrorism operation has been completed in Dagestan on December 17th. Three militants were eliminated. One has been identified as a wanted criminal on account of killing of eight people, as well as an earlier attack on the convoy of the police force.

FSB continues Russia's struggle against terrorism - sleeper cell eliminated
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/12/fsb-continues-russias-struggle-against.html

It is reported that the battle between special forces and terrorists did not last long. While the first grenades flew toward the assault group in their dwelling, one jumped out of a window, but was greeted with heavy fire.

The frame of a two-story new house, in which they were captured, apparently should not have attracted attention. The house was only being built, with little to it but the foundation. Found in the dwelling were grenades, guns and other weapons.

The leader of the group, Aligadzhi Hamutayev, was wanted on eight murders. The 31-year-old was the ideological follower of Magomedali Vagabov, who was behind the terrorist attacks in the Moscow metro, and Ibrahimkhalil Daudov, whose wife detonated herself under a Moscow Christmas tree.

Since the liquidation of Daudov, the area of Dagestan has been quiet for several years. The activation of sleeping terrorist cells may be an attempt to organize terror activity in the upcoming holidays, the FSB commented. Intelligence work continues in Russia's North Caucasus region.

On Sunday evening, Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump and thanked the American leader for the information provided by the CIA, which helped to detect and detain terrorists who were preparing explosions in St. Petersburg, the presidential press service said.

Trump sent Putin intelligence, averting terrorist attack in Russia
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/12/trump-sent-putin-intelligence-averting.html

The telephone conversation took place on the initiative of the Russian side, the press service noted.

"The President of the Russian Federation thanked his American counterpart for the information transmitted by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States, which helped to get to detect and detain a group of terrorists who were preparing explosions in the Kazan Cathedral of St. Petersburg, as well as in other public places in the city," in the press service.

Information received from the CIA, the president noted, was sufficient to detect, search for and detain criminals.

Putin asked Trump to convey his gratitude to the director of the CIA and the intelligence officers who received this information.

The Russian president assured the American leader that "the Russian special services, when they receive information regarding terrorist threats against the United States and their citizens, will undoubtedly and without delay transfer it to their American colleagues through partner channels," the press service said. This was in fact done prior to the Boston bomber incident - except it was ignored by the US authorities.

The news websites reported that Jeish al-Islam has executed 45 A-Nusra terrorists, including 7 non-Syrians, captured by the former in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus province.

The websites further said that Mull Abu Bakr, one of the Al-Nusra's bomb-making experts trained in Afghanistan's al-Zarqawi base, was among the executed terrorists.

They went on to say that the executions happened two months ago when Jeish al-Islam attacked the Al-Nusra positions in al-Ash'ari region.

Jeish al-Islam and Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at reached an agreement on Saturday. According to the deal, Jeish al-Islam should release Al-Nusra's captured members to give them a chance to leave Eastern Ghouta for Idlib along with their comrades.

Tens of Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) terrorists are readying to leave their positions in Eastern Ghouta for militant-held regions in Idlib province in line with an agreement with the Russian Reconciliation Center, an Arab media outlet reported on Monday.

The Arabic-language al-Hadath news reported that a hundred non-Syrian members of Al-Nusra are to leave Eastern Ghouta for Idlib province based on an agreement between Faylaq al-Rahman and the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria.

It added that a hundred family members of Al-Nusra militants will also leave the region for Idlib under the pressure of the residents of Eastern Ghouta.

Residents of the region have been holding protest rallies in the past few months, demanding the Al-Nusra to leave Eastern Ghouta.

In the meantime, militant-affiliated websites reported that several buses have arrived in Eastern Ghouta to evacuate Al-Nusra members and their family members.

The jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham are in serious trouble inside the Beit Jinn pocket, as the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies close in on the last positions controlled by the enemy forces.

Led by the 42nd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Arab Army stormed the large hilltop of Tal Marwan this afternoon, striking the jihadist defenses from their eastern and northern flanks.

According to a military source from the 42nd Brigade, the Syrian Army and their allies have captured a part of Tal Marwan; however, the majority of the hilltop remains under the control of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

The source added that Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham is going to hold onto Tal Marwan at all costs because if it is lost, the jihadist rebels will be forced to abandon the eastern part of Mughar Al-Mir.

As a result of this advance, the jihadist rebels are at the mercy of the Syrian Arab Army’s missile battalions, who can now rain down artillery shells and rockets with remarkable accuracy as this hilltop overlooks Mughar Al-Mir.

According to a military source in Damascus, the jihadist rebels have waved the white flag at Mughar Al-Mir and asked for terms in order to secure their departure from the town.

The source told Al-Masdar News that the jihadist rebels want to be transported from the Golan Heights and West Ghouta to the Idlib Governorate.

In exchange for their transfer, the Syrian Army will have full control of the Beit Jinn pocket, which would mark the end of the jihadist rebel presence in west Damascus.

Washington allocated $214 million to build airfields, training sites, ranges and other military installations in an unprecedented military buildup in Eastern and Northern Europe aimed at countering “Russian aggression.”

US to Spend $214mln on Europe Air Bases on Pretext of 'Russian Aggression'
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960927000310

The planned modernization of the air bases, located predominantly in Eastern Europe close to Russian borders, as well as in Iceland and Norway, is a part of the $4.6 billion European Deterrence Initiative (EDI) aimed at “reassuring” NATO’s European allies.

The funds will be distributed among a total of nine bases in Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Luxembourg, Iceland and Norway for them to be able to house top-of-the line US warplanes, Air Force Times reported.

The US reportedly plans to deploy F-22 Raptor and F-35 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets to some of the bases in the Baltics and Northern Europe to track and deter Russian submarines, the paper reported, while a spokesperson for US European Command, Maj. Juan Martinez, refused to give any specifics on the nature or location of the operations.

The Naval Air Station Keflavik in Iceland is set to undergo a $14 million modernization, which will see it adding new hangars to host P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol planes. The aircraft, dubbed “submarine killer,” is equipped with torpedoes, depth charges, Harpoon anti-ship missiles and other weaponry.

Part of the investment will be spent on the construction of new runways and fuel storage facilities at the air bases. Some $55 million will be poured into the Hungarian Kecskemet Air Base in order “to increase fuel storage capacity, construct a parallel taxiway and upgrade the airfield,” according to Martinez.

He noted that large-scale infrastructure upgrades across Europe does not mean that the US troops would be stationed there permanently, but rather stick to rotations as they have in the past.

The anti-Russian agenda championed by the US-led NATO has been getting increasingly costly for the American taxpayer. In 2018, the EDI budget will jump $1.2 billion in addition to 2017's $3.4 billion.

A part of this is $500 million in “defense lethal assistance” promised by Washington to Ukraine and hailed by its president, Petro Poroshenko, who has long been seeking US arms to suppress the popular unrest in the self-proclaimed Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk in the country’s east, which, according to the official Ukrainian and American narrative, are backed by Russia. The disbursement of funds is conditional to reforms of the Ukrainian military, that will have to be attested by the US.

By aggressively bolstering its military presence at Russia's doorstep, NATO is endangering regional stability as well as global security, Moscow has been maintaining.

The ongoing beef-up of NATO in Eastern Europe and the Baltics, and the deployment of new parts of the US missile defense, “clearly indicate blatant unwillingness of our Western partners to stop pushing an anti-Russian agenda,” Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said.

US Special Operations troops, including Navy Seals and Army Green Berets, were deployed in 149 nations in 2017, a 150 percent jump from the administration of George W. Bush, and a modern record for shipping US military policy around the globe, according to new data.

US Special Operations Forces Deployed to 149 Countries in 2017
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960927000835

"We operate and fight in every corner of the world," chief of US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) General Raymond Thomas recently boasted,
Sputnik reported.

"Rather than a mere ‘break-glass-in-case-of-war' force, we are now proactively engaged across the ‘battlespace' of the Geographic Combatant Commands," Thomas enthused, adding that US forces were globally "providing key integrating and enabling capabilities to support […] campaigns and operations," cited by The Nation.

But that worldwide scope has only spread thinner the assets of a country already to seen to be too involved in the doings of other nation-states, and Capitol Hill members are growing increasingly concerned. "We don't know exactly where we're at in the world, militarily, and what we're doing," Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), of the Senate Armed Services Committee in October, stated after four US Special Operations soldiers were killed in West Africa's Niger.

"Most Americans would be amazed to learn that US Special Operations Forces have been deployed to three quarters of the nations on the planet,"
the director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, William Hartung, declared, according to The Nation.

"There is little or no transparency as to what they are doing in these countries," Hartung asserted, stressing that "and whether their efforts are promoting security or provoking further tension and conflict."

Following 9/11, SOCOM "expanded the size of our force by almost 75 percent," General Thomas stated in May to the US Senate Armed Services Committee.

The global military outreach by the US shows no signs of slacking for 2018.

US President Donald Trump, following his inauguration, upped the ante by giving military commanders in conflict zones, including Yemen and Somalia, additional authority to launch attacks without seeking the permission of Pentagon brass.

SOCOM forces, in just the first six months of the Trump presidency conducted five times the number of lethal missions as were conducted during US President Barack Obama's last six months in office, according to national security expert Micah Zenko, a Whitehead Senior Fellow at the Chatham House think tank.

In just a fraction of 2017's growing list of global hotspots, US Special Forces soldiers have been killed in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia, as well as in Niger and Mali. Ongoing operations in Libya saw US Navy Seals kidnapping a suspect in the 2012 Benghazi attacks and, in the Philippines, US Special Forces have fought side by side with Manila troops in the bloody battle to recapture Marawi City after it was seized by militants earlier in the year.

The significant increase in SOCOM deployment around the world is straining not only the resources of the Pentagon, but also the ability of the US state department to do its job through diplomatic channels.

"This is a colossal mistake," Hartung stated of the rapidly expanding US global military footprint, particularly "if one is concerned about reining in the globe-spanning US military strategy of the post-9/11 era, which has caused more harm than good and done little to curb terrorism."

Speculation surrounding the death of a US commando in Niger is unfounded, as Sgt. La David T. Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained from long range in the African country last October.

Leaked Details: US Commando Killed in Niger Op Was Not Captured
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960927001520

Johnson’s body was not found in the immediate aftermath of the attack, which caused speculation about the circumstances of his death. The Pentagon is currently preparing a report on the incident, but some US officials have apparently decided to address the speculation by sharing advance details of the report with the Associated Press.

He was one of four American troops killed during an ambush in Niger in October. Their deaths drew attention to the fact that the US had a military presence in the African nation, which surprised some lawmakers.

Johnson, 25, was part of a 12-member US Army team, which was accompanying 30 Nigerien troops on a patrol mission. The unit was ambushed by an estimated 50 militants, armed with automatic firearms and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

According to the AP report, Johnson was struck by as many as 18 rounds from a distance as he and two Nigerien soldiers were trying to escape. The rounds came from M-4 rifles and Soviet-made machine guns, according to autopsy report. Johnson’s body was found two days after the ambush under thick scrub, where he had apparently taken cover. There were no indications that he was taken prisoner or executed from close range, as rumors had suggested. His boots and equipment were missing, however, but he was still wearing his uniform when he was found.

According to the US officials, Johnson “appeared to fight to the end.”

The Pentagon would not release details of the operation in Niger. Some reports earlier said the patrol was assisting in a search for intelligence to be used in tracking down a senior militant commander, and may have been waylaid by the enemy after a tip from a village that the patrol had visited.

After news emerged of the combat deaths in Niger, some US lawmakers expressed outrage and surprise that the White House had failed to tell Congress about the scale of American military presence in the country.

According to a military source in Hama, the Syrian Army’s Tiger Forces are planning to use the US-manufactured weapons against the jihadist rebels in the upcoming battle for the Idlib Governorate.

Among the US-manufactured weapons transferred to the Idlib front were a large number of TOW missiles that were previously supplied by Washington to the rebel forces in Syria before they were later sold to the Islamic State.

Militant groups blocked roads and forbade refugees from leaving the al-Rukban camp, located in the US zone of influence on the Syria-Jordan border, a source familiar with the situation reported.

Militants Block Refugees Leaving Syria's al-Rukban Camp

"Quwwat Shahid Ahmad Abdu militants installed roadblocks in the al-Tanf region and are not allowing refugees to leave the al-Rukban camp, who are trying to leave the US-controlled 55 –kilometer zone," the source told Sputnik.

Back in October, the Russian Defense Ministry accused the US of establishing a training camp for militants near al-Rukban to create a new "moderate opposition," slamming Washington's move as "a war crime," since it prevented the Syrian government from setting up a safe corridor for the delivery of humanitarian supplies to refugees.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a powerful assault in the southeastern countryside of the Aleppo Governorate, today, targeting the jihadist-held town of Al-Ramleh.

Syrian Army’s offensive in southeast Aleppo takes disastrous turn

Backed by heavy artillery, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Division and Republican Guard managed to enter the town from its eastern flank this afternoon, following a fierce battle with the jihadist forces.

However, the Syrian Army’s success would stop there, as they soon found themselves outnumbered and nearly surrounded inside of Al-Ramleh.

According to preliminary reports, Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham captured eight soldiers and killed a half dozen others during the short-lived attack today.

The Syrian Army will likely make another attempt to capture this town in the coming days, as they continue their push towards the strategic Abu Dhuhour Military Airport in east Idlib.

Sixty-five journalists and media workers were killed worldwide in 2017, according to annual figures published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Tuesday.

65 Journalists, Media Workers Killed Globally in 2017: Reporters Without Borders
http://english.almanar.com.lb/409968

Among them were 50 professional reporters, However, the downward trend is due at least in part to journalists giving up working in the world’s deadliest spots.

War-torn Syria remains the most dangerous country in the world for journalists, RSF said, with 12 reporters killed, followed by Mexico where 11 were assassinated.

They included Javier Valdez, one of the most prominent chroniclers of Mexico’s deadly drug war, whose murder in May sparked a public outcry.

RSF said Mexico was the deadliest country not at war, saying those who “cover political corruption or organized crime are often systemically targeted, threatened and gunned down.”

The Philippines has become Asia’s most dangerous country for reporters, with at least five journalists being shot in the last year, four of whom died of their injuries.

The rise comes after what RSF called an “alarming comment” by President Rodrigo Duterte who said in May that “just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination if you’re a son of a bitch.”

No journalists were killed in the country the previous year.

The overall number of professional reporters slain worldwide, however, fell to its lowest number in 14 years, RSF said.

Of the 65 killed, the report said 39 were murdered, while the rest died in the line of duty — collateral victims of deadly circumstances likes air strikes or suicide bombings.

The group said that the drop in the death rate may be because journalists were now being better trained and protected for war zones.

“The downward trend is also due to journalists abandoning countries that have become too dangerous,” it added.

“Countries such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Libya have been hemorrhaging journalists.” But the trend is not confined to countries at war, RSF added.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) laid a successful ambush on a group of rebel reinforcements that were making their way from the Israeli border to the besieged Beit Jinn pocket in west Damascus today.

According to a military report, the rebel reinforcements were navigating through Mount Hermon from the occupied territories, when army scouts spotted the group.

Once the rebel reinforcements attempted to cross into the government areas, the Syrian Army opened fire with a barrage of missiles and artillery shells, killing several militants in the process.

The rebels that were not killed by the ambush had managed to slip back across the border to the occupied territories, a military source added.

The fierce clashes happened on Wednesday night between the Syrian army soldiers and the militants inside and in the surroundings of Tadef in Northern Aleppo. Both sides are attempting to take control of the important town before its rival.

Tadef is around one kilometer South of the strategic crossroad town of al-Bab. The Syrian army forces are holding positions in the South and pro-Turkey fighters are in the North.

Syrian Parliament Member Hossein Raqeb said on Wednesday that Turkey paid hundreds of dollars to each militant in Idlib province to prevent them from joining the nationwide reconciliation plan.

Raqeb told the Arabic-language al-Watan daily that Turkey bribed and dissuaded the militants who wanted to lay down arms and join the peace agreement with the army in Idlib province.

He said that Turkey paid $10,000 to each gunman to prevent the militants from ending battle with the Syrian army and applying for government amnesty.

Raqeb said that the gunmen had called relevant government officials and declared their intention to join reconciliation plan.

The Arabic-language al-Hadath news website reported on Thursday that the Syrian government flags have been hoisted over a number of schools and governmental centers in the regions under the SDF control in the Aleppo districts of Sheikh Maqsoud, al-Ashrafiyeh, al-Halak and al-Ba'eidayn.

Local sources confirmed that the SDF has delivered control of all schools, medical centers and organizations which provide different services to the governmental units to the Syrian government, adding that the government has sent aid and fuel to these districts and allowed the residents to return to their homes.

Based on the report, the development came after an agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF.

Commander of Sultan Murad Brigade, affiliated to the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA), Ahmad Osman announced on Tuesday that his forces are well-prepared to kick off a heavy attack on the Kurdish self-protection units in Aleppo province in Northern Syria.

The Turkish-backed FSA is on alert and waiting for the order to attack Syria's Kurdish canton of Afrin, Ahmed Osman said.

He further added that the FSA is going to focus on the fight against the Kurdish People's Protection Units while ISIL in Syria has almost been destroyed.

"There are clashes between the FSA and the YPG in Manbij from time to time," Osman said. "There are a lot of Arab and Turkmen villages in the area under the YPG control. We must liberate these territories and clean (the YPG) out from Afrin."

Osman pointed out that the FSA is preparing to launch the Afrin operation together with Turkey.

News websites affiliated to the dissident groups reported that a number of militants have been transferred from Eastern Homs and the towns of Western al-Qalamoun to Northern Syria to form a new structure (military and civil) affiliated to the dissidents and backed by the Turkish government.

The sources added that despite the fact that formation of such a structure is still under study, a number of senior militants have already been selected for sensitive posts in the new group.

An Arab media outlet reported on Wednesday that a large number of notorious commanders of terrorist groups have left Syria for Turkey, taking away a hefty amount of money to set up their own business.

The Arabic-language al-Arabi al-Jadid website reported that a large number of terrorist commanders have left behind their forces in Syria's battlefields and escaped to Turkey with a large amount of money.

It added that Ahmad al-Madani nom de guerre Abu Saleh, the founder of Badr Battalion - that was one of the first terrorist establishments in al-Qaboun region in Damascus province - left the battlefield on the second day of clashes in 2012 on the pretext of procuring arms and ammunition.

The website went on to say that Abu Saleh moved from al-Qaboun to Qalamoun and later to the town of Arbin, adding that Abu Saleh ultimately left Syria for Turkey via al-Atibeh region and did not come back to Syria again.

Al-Arabi al-Jadid further said that Abu Saleh sold the entire weapons and ammunitions to the militant groups in the town of Bab al-Hawa in Idlib and earned over 100mln lira, adding that one of costumers of Abu Saleh's weapons was Jamal, the commander of Syria's Thowar Front.

Abu Saleh later set up a large supper market in Mustafa Pasha in Bourseh province in Turkey and now his living in al-Fateh neighborhood in the European part of Istanbul city.

He added that Beit Jinn has been fully surrounded after all roads linking the terrorists in Beit Jinn from the Northeastern and Southeastern front were cut and the army regained military control over Nahr al-Awaj- the only road linking terrorists in Beit Jinn to Tal Marwan and Mughur al-Mir.

Also, based on the field reports a number of al-Nusra terrorists have made attempts to flee to occupied Golan from Jabal al-Sheikh passageway following the army's advance in the region and imposing heavy defeats on the terrorists.

I think, Brett McGurk is trying to build a case for the continued occupation of the U.S. in Syria? The U.S. has no legal right or just cause to remain in that Country nor maintain 11+ Military bases on Syrian soil. The headline in this article is misleading and false, including McGurk's claims of "engaging Russia" in cooperation in defeating Daesh? McGurk goes on to say, "We are present in At Tanf" but fails to mention that the U.S. has a large Military base located there, side by side with a refugee camp, which the U.S. has blocked several attempts by the U.N. aid agencies from delivering Humanitarian aid. Now, McKurk is asking "the Russians to come up with a common plan to get aid to that camp"? McKurk is either misinformed or lacking neurons or both?

US Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State Brett McGurk told reporters on Thursday that The United States would maintain the military presence at the At Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria as well as in other areas of the country to ensure that the Daesh terror group does not return to the liberated areas.

US Engagement With Russia Contributed to Daesh's Defeat in Syria - McGurk
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712221060219812-usa-russia-syria-daesh-demise/

Brett McGurk said that while the Daesh will be around for a while, and the coalition has a long way to go to eliminate the terror group, a great deal of progress has been made over the past year.

We are present in At Tanf, and we are going to be present in At Tanf to make sure that ISIS [Daesh] cannot return and also to manage this difficult humanitarian situation," McGurk stated. "We’ll also remain present in other areas of Syria to make sure that ISIS cannot return."

Meantime, Brett McGurk also said that the United States is calling on Russia to help with getting aid to a refugee camp near At-Tanf.

"There is an IDP [internally displaced persons] camp right on the Jordanian border [near At Tanf], about 45,000 people are there," McGurk said. "We are pushing particularly through the Russians to come up with a common plan to get aid to that camp. We’ve called on Russians to be cooperative on that effort."

The Al-Rukban refugee camp is located in the Homs province some 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of the At-Tanf settlement and inside the US-controlled zone on the Syrian-Jordanian border. In early November, the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria accused the United States of establishing a training camp near the al-Rukban refugee camp to forge a new "moderate opposition" out of various militia groups.

Russia has proposed then to the US military stationed in At-Tanf to jointly ensure safety of humanitarian aid deliveries to refugees. The US-led coalition agreed, but claimed that it had not received the confirmation that the Syrian authorities were ready to let convoys pass.

McGurk noted that the engagements with Russia are "tense from time to time," but overall they have helped accelerate the pace of operations.

"The engagement with the Russians, I think, contributed to the demise of ISIS [Daesh]," McGurk said. "We’ve kind of drawn some lines on the map with the Russians about where their forces would be, where we would be. This is a professional military-to-military engagement focused on deconfliction. We are not coordinating operations but making sure we don’t accidents."

However, Head of the Russian delegation at the Astana talks on Syrian reconciliation Alexander Lavrentyev said Thursday that continuing presence of the United States in Syria is excessive and has no legitimate grounds. The official called all the reasons voiced by the United States for justifying its military presence in Syria, including at At Tanf on the Syrian-Iraqi border, "excuses".

According to Lavrentyev, the United States continues citing humanitarian reasons for justification of their presence in Syria, however these statements are "nothing but words" and there are no legal grounds for the US presence.

In October 2015, the United States and Russia signed a bilateral memorandum of understanding to ensure flight safety during combat missions over Syria.

Syria has been engulfed in a civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting numerous opposition factions and terrorist groups. The international community has taken a number of steps aimed at settling the crisis, including through talks in Geneva and Astana.

The US-led coalition of more than 70 members is conducting military operations against the Daesh in Syria and Iraq. The coalition's strikes in Iraq are conducted in cooperation with Iraqi officials, but those in Syria are not authorized by Assad's government or the UN Security Council.

Russian forces are operating in Syria at the request of the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has called the US-backed Kurdish militia, the People's Protection Units (YPG) as "traitors" on Monday as they coordinate with the United States.

President Assad correctly describes Kurdish militia as "traitors"
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/12/president-assad-correctly-describes.html

"When we talk about those referred to as 'the Kurds', they are in fact not just Kurds. All those who work for a foreign country, mainly those under American command... are traitors," he said.

"This is how we see these groups working for the Americans," he said.

The Kurds account for around 15% of Syria's population but occupy around a quarter of the country. Much of the areas it occupies is oil-rich and mostly outside of areas that constitute a Kurdish-majority.

The YPG are a branch of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that the US lists as a terrorist organization, suggesting contradictions and hypocrisy in the US' Syria policy as it attempts to undermine the Assad government by all means possible.

The alignment of the YPG to the US is all the more stranger considering that it announces itself as having a Marxist-Leninist ideology, but directly coordinates with the biggest imperial empire the world has seen.

The US has supported, indirectly and/or directly, with every armed anti-government militant group in Syria, including ISIS, which is why Assad correctly asserts that the YPG are traitors as they seek to federalize Syria, with more extreme elements in the pseudo-Marxist group seeking independence.

This is all the more stranger as Kurdish nationalists believe much of northern Syria should be a part of an independent Kurdistan despite most Kurd's in Syria being descendants of Kurds who had migrated to from the Ottoman Empire, and later the Turkish Republic, to Syria in the first half of the 20th Century.

Two children were killed and four others injured on December, 21 when terrorist organizations shelled residential neighborhoods in Aleppo city during public celebrations, the SANA news agency reported.

https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712211060207983-two-killed-aleppo-shelling/

Reportedly, two children – a boy, six years and a girl, 13 years, were killed and three members of their family injured in addition to wounding another civilian.

The celebrations prevailed in Aleppo including Saadallah al-Jabiri Square with the participants raising the Syrian flag and banners glorifying the heroism of the Syrian Arab Army, according to the SANA reporter.

December 22 will mark a one-year anniversary since the last militants left eastern Aleppo, resulting in the complete victory of the Syrian government forces, dubbed a "watershed event" by President Bashar Assad. At the same time, Russian military police were deployed in Aleppo in December 2016 and February 2017 to help maintain order after the liberation of the city by the Syrian army from militants.

The efforts helped many refugees who left Syria for other countries as asylum seekers to return to their homes in the country's provinces of Homs and Aleppo.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a session of the country’s Commission for the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that restoring sites in Syria's Aleppo and Palmyra has been delayed because of pressure being exerted on the UNESCO.

Lavrov: Restoring Palmyra and Aleppo is being delayed because of pressures on UNESCO
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/12/lavrov-restoring-palmyra-and-aleppo-is.html

"Due to the serious damage which terrorists inflicted on the Middle East’s richest cultural and historic heritage, we are trying to reactivate the work of UNESCO in order to restore the monuments in Palmyra and Aleppo," he said.

"Unfortunately, the initial positive signals have now been slowed down due to ongoing pressure on the UNESCOI secretariat, which only demonstrates the grievous fact that political rationale still trumps common sense," the top diplomat noted.

ISIS destroyed many of the ancient sites in Palmyra because they were not Islamic.

Huge swathes of Aleppo were destroyed in the fighting between Syrian government forces and terrorist organizations.

The Russian State Duma ratified on Thursday the agreement on the expansion of the Russian naval facility in the Syrian port city of Tartus.

State Duma Ratifies Expansion of Russia's Tartus Naval Facility in Syria Deal
https://sputniknews.com/russia/201712211060195864-russia-syria-tartus-base-navy/

According to the agreement, Russia may simultaneously deploy up to 11 warships, including nuclear-powered combat vessels, at the Tartus naval facility. Russia will carry out the seaborne and airborne protection of the base, while Syria will be responsible for the land security. Russia will be able to deploy temporary mobile outposts beyond the base, if coordinated with the Syrian side.

The agreement also stipulates that Russia will have the right to renovate, rebuild or demolish the facility.

The document also regulates different legal issues, such as the status of personnel, members of their families, issues related to the criminal and administrative prosecution of the personnel and family members, as well as crew members for the crimes and offenses committed in Syria, and also issues related to the information protection.

The agreement between Russia and Syria is supposed to be in force for 49 years and can be automatically prolonged for further 25-year periods. It is defensive in nature and is not directed against other countries.

On December 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted to the lower house of Russia's parliament a draft on ratification of the Russia-Syria agreement on expansion if the Russian naval facility in Syria signed in January.

The Pentagon is on a spending spree as it scrabbles to amass vast quantities of Soviet-style weapons and ammunition. But it’s running into problems sourcing them, and is using misleading legal documents to disguise their final destination: Syria.

The Pentagon's $2.2 Billion Soviet Arms Pipeline Flooding Syria (Video - graphs)
http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/article/the-pentagon-s-2-2-billion-soviet-arms-pipeline-flooding-syria-09-12-2017

The defeat of Islamic State in Syria is reliant on a questionable supply-line, funneling unprecedented quantities of weapons and ammunition from Eastern Europe to some 30,000 anti-ISIS rebel fighters.

Armed with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades fresh from state-owned production lines and stockpiles of the Balkans, Central Europe and increasingly the former Soviet Union, these US-backed troops are spearheading the battle to reclaim Raqqa, the capital of the so-called caliphate, and liberate other areas of Syria held by ISIS.

But the flow of weapons to these Pentagon-backed militia depends on misleading official paperwork, an investigation by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, OCCRP, has uncovered.

The operation has been criticized by arms transfer experts and even worried officials in Berlin, who have seen large quantities of weapons passing through US military bases in Germany on the way to Syria.

Reporters have pinpointed more than $700 million of spending on weapons and ammunition likely destined for Syrian rebels since September 2015, when the Pentagon’s anti-ISIS train and equip programme shifted strategy.

The Department of Defense has budgeted $584 million specifically for this Syrian operation for the financial years 2017 and 2018, and has earmarked another $900 million of spending on Soviet-style munitions between now and 2022.

The total, $2.2 billion, likely understates the flow of weapons to Syrian rebels in the coming years.

The weapons and ammunition that the Pentagon is supplying to Syria are dispatched through a sprawling logistical network, including an army of arms dealers, shipping companies, cargo airlines, German military bases and Balkan airports and ports.

The purchases are routed through two channels. One is run by the US military’s Special Operations Command, SOCOM, and the other is operated by Picatinny Arsenal, a little-known New Jersey weapons depot.

The Pentagon’s anti-ISIS program became Washington’s sole military campaign in Syria in July 2017 after President Trump closed the CIA-funded Operation Syacamore, aimed at arming Syrian rebels fighting President Assad.

Trump has pledged to “wipe out” ISIS and has allocated increased funding for the Pentagon campaign, which now has many former anti-regime groups on its pay-roll.

With vast quantities of weapons continuing to pour into Syria, concerns abound about a wider conflict emerging once the common enemy of ISIS is defeated.

Asked about the unprecedented purchase of Soviet-style arms for Syrian rebels, the Pentagon said that it had carefully vetted the recipients and was releasing equipment incrementally.

Train and equip: A Major Shift in Strategy

As ISIS swept across Syria in 2014, the Pentagon hastily launched a $500 million train and equip programme that December to build up a new force of Syrian rebels, armed with modern US weapons, in an attempt to counter the threat.

But nine months later, the program had collapsed, with only a handful of recruits having made it onto the battlefield.

Amid a flurry of negative headlines, the Pentagon needed a new plan: Starting in September 2015, and largely unnoticed by the media, it quietly shifted focus to arming Syrian rebels already on the ground with the Eastern Bloc arms and ammunition they were already using, according to a previously unreported Pentagon document from February 2016.

This Soviet-type equipment, both newly produced and sourced from stockpiles, is available from Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet countries, as well as China and Russia. The latter two large suppliers are out of bounds, as their military equipment falls under US sanctions.

The first Pentagon delivery, which included 50 tonnes of ammunition, arrived in October 2015, just a month after the shift in policy. The munitions were airdropped to Arab units within the then recently formed Syrian Democratic Forces, SDF, a Kurdish-led coalition currently spearheading the fight to reclaim Raqqa, and the Pentagon’s main ally in Syria.

The shipment was far from a one-time event and the SDF was not the only group to receive support – a changing coalition of rebel fighters in Syria’s south east is also being armed by the Pentagon.

Socom supply-line

Special Operations Command, SOCOM, has not previously acknowledged its role in the Syria train and equip program, but in a written statement to BIRN and OCCRP, the Pentagon confirmed that it had been charged with procuring weapons and ammunition for Syrian rebels.

From the swift in strategy to May 2017, it has purchased weapons and ammunition worth $240 million from Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Poland and Romania, according to an analysis of thousands of procurement records by BIRN and OCCRP. Prior to the start of the program, its spending on Eastern Bloc weaponry had been negligible.

While SOCOM is known to covertly supply US partners in other conflicts, documentary evidence, expert analysis, and the testimony of a contractor involved in the supply-line confirmed that Syria is the main destination for these purchases.

Between December 2015 and September 2016, SOCOM also chartered four cargo ships from Romanian and Bulgarian Black Sea ports, laden with 6,300 tonnes of the purchased munitions to be delivered to military bases in Turkey and Jordan, the main logistics bases for supplying Syrian rebels, according to procurement documents, packing lists and ship tracking data.

It also commissioned commercial cargo flights with the Azerbaijan airline Silk Way to air bases in Turkey and Kuwait, other key hubs in the anti-ISIS mission.

The Pentagon has requested an additional $322.5 million for the financial year ending October 2017 and has asked for $261.9 million for the following 12 months [see infographic], to buy munitions for the Syria train and equip program.

This will include tens of thousands of AK-47s and Rocket Propelled Grenades, RPGs, and hundreds of millions of pieces of ammunition, according to the funding requests made by the Pentagon and the Trump administration.

SOCOM had already made a dent in the budget by February, after it issued a $90 million shopping list specifically for Syria, seen by reporters, which includes 10,000 AK-47s, 6,000 rocket launchers, 6,000 heavy and light machine guns and 36 million pieces of ammunition.

Picatinny: A New Supply-Line Revealed

SOCOM is not, however, the only Pentagon unit that is buying munitions for the Syria train and equip program.

The Picatinny Arsenal, a military base in New Jersey, with the help of its sister facility in Rock Island New Jersey, is also a critical part of the supply-chain.

It has bought up to $480 million worth of Soviet-style arms and ammunition for Syrian rebels since the switch in strategy, this investigation can reveal, from Afghanistan, Bulgaria, BIH, Croatia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Georgia, Poland and Serbia.

Picatinny boasts of its record supplying large quantities of Eastern Bloc equipment to Iraq and Afghanistan, but it has been far more circumspect about its role in the Syrian conflict, which is politically divisive internationally and involves supplying militia groups rather than state armies.

This means that while purchases of non-standard munitions – the US’s euphemism for Soviet-style equipment – were clearly marked for Iraq or Afghanistan, it appears to be Pentagon policy not to label procurement goods destined for Syria.

BIRN and OCCRP discovered seven contracts worth $71 million that were signed in September 2016 and cited Syria either by name or the Department of Defense’s internal code – V7 – for the Syria train and equip program. But these references were quickly deleted from the public record after BIRN and OCCRP asked the Department of Defense and supplier countries about these deliveries in March of this year.

Reporters made copies of all documents before they were deleted. The Pentagon has declined to explain the alterations. On top of the $71 million marked for Syria, a further $408 million of Eastern Bloc equipment was made since the strategy switch with no destination mentioned.

Deliveries to Syrian rebels are set to increase in coming years as Picatinny has already earmarked as much as $950 million to be spent on Soviet-style ammunition by 2022 – it spent $1.3billion in the preceding decade – placing further pressure on the supply-line.

Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel

The newly revealed $2.2 billion pipeline financed by the US, as well as an earlier 1.2 billion euro pipeline financed by Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates that was previously revealed by BIRN, have meant boom times for arms producers in Central and Eastern Europe.

Factories such as the Krusik missile manufacturer in Serbia and the VMZ military plant in Bulgaria have drastically increased production in response.
Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic promised on July 1 to turn “meadows and forests” into arms factories and almost double Serbia’s arms exports to $750 million by 2020 as he toured Belom, a recently opened bullet factory.

While the pipeline has yet to dry up, Pentagon contractors have been forced to scour the world for new sources and have requested permission to provide aging stockpiled material rather than newly produced material, according to documents obtained by reporters.

The US had traditionally turned to Romania and Bulgaria for non-standard armaments, but the surge in demand has forced contractors to look to the Czech Republic, BiH, Serbia, and now Russia’s neighbors Ukraine, Georgia, and Kazakhstan, and even Afghanistan, according to US procurement records.

As demand continues to grow, the competition between contractors to secure weapons, is becoming increasingly fierce, forcing them to look even further afield, including Pakistan and Vietnam, a source said.

The Pentagon contractor, who asked to remain anonymous, said that this had created an “environment where greed is the motivating factor among most … contractors involved”.

Scarce supplies have pushed the Pentagon to lower its standards for weapons and ammunition. Previously it had required suppliers to provide equipment of less than five years old but in February it dropped this requirement for some equipment, according to official documents obtained by BIRN and OCCRP.

Munitions stored in poor conditions degrade, sometimes becoming unusable or even dangerous. A Pentagon contractor due to train Syrian rebels died in June 2015 when the 30-year-old RPG he was handling exploded at a firing range in Bulgaria.

Undermining the Arms Control System

The smooth functioning of the weapons supply-line to Syria depends not only on keeping the final destination of the arms secret but also – say experts who have reviewed the evidence obtained by BIRN and the OCCRP – on supplier countries in Eastern Europe not asking too many questions about why the US is seeking so much Eastern Bloc weaponry.

These experts believe that as a result, both sides are likely in breach of their international obligations.

A valid end-user certificate guaranteeing the final destination of arms and ammunition is a standard international legal requirement to secure an arms export license, but an end user certificate issued by SOCOM under the Syria program and seen by BIRN and OCCRP does not mention the Middle East country.

Instead, it lists SOCOM as the final user, despite the fact the US army does not use Eastern Bloc weaponry itself. The document states that “the material will be used for defense purposes in direct use by US government, transferred by means of grants as military education or training program or security assistance.”

The document is similar in wording to four SOCOM end user certificates leaked online earlier this month, which detail how the weapons or ammunition will be for the “exclusive use of the US Special Operations Command, its NATO allies and partners in support of United States training, security assistance and stability operations”.

In a detailed written response, the Pentagon did not dispute designating the US Army as the end user, adding it viewed the transfer of weapons to Syrian rebels as part of its “security assistance” program, a term it uses in the legal document.

But Patrick Wilcken, an arms researcher at Amnesty International, described these end-user certificate as “very misleading” adding: “An end user certificate that did not contain this information [final destination] would be self-defeating and highly unusual.”

Washington has not yet ratified the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty, an international agreement attempting to regulate the transfer of weapons by preventing the diversion of weapons to war zones and improving transparency, and is therefore not legally bound by it. But as a signatory, the US is expected not to undermine the deal, something Wilcken argues that Washington is doing.

As a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, OSCE, Washington has, however, signed a series of measures to prevent weapons trafficking -- including a binding decision that end-user certificates include the final destination country.

European exporter states have ratified the ATT and are also bound by the OSCE’s decisions and the EU’s even stricter rules, known as the Common Position on Arms Exports. The EU rules apply to most prospective members.

Under the ATT and EU Common Position, exporters must weigh up the risks that arms and ammunition will be diverted and used to commit war crimes or “undermine peace and security” before issuing a license.

Without knowing the final destination, such an assessment is impossible meaning that exporting states are acting “negligently”, Wilcken said.

Roy Isbister of Saferworld, a non-governmental organization that works to strengthen controls on the international arms trade , said: “If the US is manipulating the process and providing cover for others to claim ignorance of the end users of the weapons in question, the whole control system is at risk.”

Authorities in Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Ukraine and Georgia were presented with US procurement documents showing that weapons they had exported were destined to Syria. Romania, the Czech Republic and Serbia told BIRN and OCCRP that they had granted export licenses with the US, not Syria, listed as the final destination. Prague’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that it supported the US’s fight against ISIS, but refused to confirm it was aware of the arms’ final destination.

German authorities appear to have been less comfortable with how the weapons pipeline was operating. A leaked Pentagon email obtained by BIRN and OCCRP reveals how Berlin had become “very sensitive” to the huge quantities of Eastern Bloc weapons passing through its territory to US bases, apparently forcing a reroute of the supply-line to Syria.

Georgia’s Ministry of Defense said an export deal was under negotiation but it had not received an end-user certificate from the Pentagon and no contract had been signed. Ukraine and Bulgaria did not respond to requests for comment.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Poland, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan, which have all agreed to exports to SOCOM or Picatinny for an unspecified destination since September 2015, were also asked whether they were aware if these weapons had ended up in Syria.

BiH confirmed that it had issued export licenses to SOCOM but not Syria, while Poland and Croatia said it obeyed by all international rules. Kazakhstan and Afghanistan did not respond.

Weapons continue to pour into Syria to fight ISIS, and fears are growing about what will happen to the arms and fighters when the jihadists are defeated.

Wilcken said that he feared for the future of the Middle East.

“Given the very complex, fluid situation in Syria … and the existence of many armed groups accused of serious abuses,” he said. “It is difficult to see how the US could ensure arms sent to the region would not be misused.”

The latest round of Syrian peace negotiations has wrapped up in the Kazakh capital Astana, in an event attended by delegations from Russia, Iran, Turkey and Syria.

Blatant Aggression': Envoy Demands Withdrawal of US, Turkish Troops From Syria
https://sputniknews.com/world/201712231060260424-syria-talks-us-turkey-troops-withdrawal/

Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar Jaafari has described the presence of Turkish and US troops in Syria a "blatant aggression."

Speaking at the latest round of Syrian peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana, he called for an "immediate and unconditional withdrawal" of US and Turkish forces from Syria.

Jaafari also confirmed that "Syria will attend the Syrian National Dialogue Congress due to be held in Sochi."

His statement came after delegations from Russia, Iran and Turkey and Syria agreed to hold a "peace congress" in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, in a bid to contribute to resolving the Syrian conflict.

The sides' joint statement said that the congress would be held between January 29 and January 30 in 2018.

In early October, Turkey announced the official start of the operation in Syria's Idlib controlled by al-Nusra Front terrorists. Turkish officials said that the goal was to enforce a de-escalation zone in the area.

Armed conflict in Syria has been in place since March 2011. Russia has conducted an operation against the Daesh terrorist group at the request of official Damascus as of September 2015.

The US been carrying out a military operation in Syria against Daesh without the consent of the country's authorities since 2014.

In mid-December, following the announcement of the defeat of Daesh on both banks of the Euphrates river in Syria, President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of the main part of the Russian forces from Syria, with the bases in Hmeymim and Tartus continuing their operation.

The flow of Russian nationals going to Syria in order to fight for terrorist groups has stopped, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin said Saturday.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Says Russians Not Going to Syria Anymore
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712231060267900-russians-daesh-recruitment-propaganda/

We do not see lots of them. No longer. Now we see that the flow going in revised direction," Khloponin said, answering the question on whether many Russians were going to Syria to participate in fighting.

Khloponin added that nearly 30 Russians, who fought in Syria, attempted to return to the country over the past two months.

"Twenty-seven people have attempted to enter the country with different passports over the past two months. We have been apprehending them," Khloponin added.

Daesh recruits Russians mostly from the Northern Caucasus regions with the predominantly Muslim population. However, there are also notable cases of successful Daesh propaganda in other regions of the country.

The flow of Russian people willing to fight for Daesh has decreased significantly after the certain success was achieved in combating terrorism in Syria.

A top US Marine Corps general told Marines stationed in Norway he foresees “a big-ass fight” sometime in the future.

US Troops in Northern Europe Heighten New Cold War Tensions With Russia
https://sputniknews.com/military/201712231060258544-cold-war-dangerous-troops-europe/

Regardless of the whether war breaks out, "his talking about the real possibility of a war with Russia" acknowledges "what many of us have been saying for several years: We're in a Cold War right now," Dr. Anthony Monteiro told Sputnik Friday.

"I hope I'm wrong, but there's a war coming," USMC Gen. Robert Neller told Marines in Norway on Thursday, Military.com reports. "You're in a fight here, an informational fight, a political fight, by your presence," Neller said, emphasizing that the Marines should stay ready ‘round the clock for a "big-ass fight" in the future.

This Cold War is more dangerous than the first Cold War because there are no legal structures or treaty structures in place between the United States and Russia to prevent a mistake that could lead to a world war," Monteiro told Sputnik Radio's Loud & Clear.

"The United States has moved nuclear weapons to Eastern Europe in Poland and Romania," the academic noted, "which is far closer than they've ever been."

The deployment of 330 US Marines to Norwegian soil began in January. Moscow said at the time that the decision went against Norway's policy on foreign military bases. "We believe that this contradicts the Norwegian policy of not stationing foreign military bases in peacetime on its territory," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said October 2016, when the decision was announced.

Rather than being a "limited rotational force presence," as the Nordic state's Defense Ministry claimed, "the specific troops will change, but the presence will be continuous," Zakharova predicted, noting that "this step is obviously not conducive to maintaining stability and security in Northern Europe."

US President Donald Trump has sought improved bilateral relations with Russia, but a recent national security strategy document published by the Trump administration declared Russia and China "revisionist" powers. The document boldly asserts that the "combination of Russian ambition and growing military capabilities creates an unstable frontier in Eurasia, where the risk of conflict due to Russian miscalculation is growing."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that the new US National Security Strategy, unveiled earlier in the week, was offensive and aggressive in nature.

In the diplomatic language, if we speak military language, then it is certainly aggressive," he said noting, "we should take that into account in our practical work" at the annual Russian Defense Ministry Board meeting.

Armed rebel groups in southwestern Syria have demonstrated a range of new artillery systems against Syrian army-led forces. The impact these new weapons have on the battlefield was shown off in a recently released propaganda video.

VIDEOS: Syrian Army positions get obliterated by new rebel artillery systems
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/videos-syrian-army-positions-get-obliterated-new-rebel-artillery-systems/

The video, produced by the media arm of the Daraa-based Bunyan al-Marsous operations room, shows two new artillery systems built by Free Syrian Army engineers.

The first new system appears to a pickup truck mounted with a mine clearance charge salvaged from a Russian built UR-77 Meteorit thrower system. As the video shows, the powerful explosion delivered by the system is capable of leveling a neighborhood block.

The second new weapon unrelieved by rebel forces is a homemade ‘Omar’ tactical rocket, which delivers a explosive punch somewhere within the 500 kilogram yield range.

All attacks against pro-government forces by militant artillery systems shown in the video are linked to renewed clashes in the city of Daraa – more specifically, in the heavily contested district of Al-Manshiyyah.

US-backed forces in Syria are to receive additional training by their American handlers in how to establish and maintain security throughout the country’s border areas with neighboring nations such as Iraq an Turkey.

US forces to train Kurdish, Arab fighters in border security to prevent ‘resurgence of ISIS’
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/us-forces-train-kurdish-arab-fighters-border-security-prevent-resurgence-isis/

According to US Army General Joseph Votel, head of CENTCOM (Central Command), US advisors and military support forces in Syria are planning on expanding their current training program for pro-Coalition militias to include specialization in border security.

The official rationale put forth by Votel for this proposed extension of US military support for Kurdish and Arab armed groups fighting on-side of the Coalition is the need to prevent the ‘resurgence of ISIS’ in areas recently liberated from the terrorist group. Syria’s borders are seen as particularly vulnerable in this regard.

At the present time Coalition-led forces in Syria holds border areas with Turkey and Iraq.

Following the capture of Raqqah from ISIS, US-backed militias have since turned their attention Syria’s southeast were they are currently engaged in battles with the along the eastern shore of the Euphrates River.

A veteran Syrian jihadist battle group which has been absent from the front-line for most of 2017 has begun to send fighters and heavy weapons to Hama province in order to assist Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants battling it out with pro-government forces throughout the region.

New jihadist force joins Al-Nusra’s battle against the Syrian Army in Hama
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/new-jihadist-force-joins-al-nusras-battle-syrian-army-hama/

According to opposition and pro-government sources, forces of the Muslim Brotherhood-linked Ahrar al-Sham jihadist coalition (which operates across western Syria) have started to take up positions next to Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jahbat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda) in northeast Hama province.

The year of 2017 has seen considerable degree of infighting between Ahrar al-Sham and Ha’yat Tahrir al-sham throughout rebel-held northwest Syria. The inter-jihadist hostilities are linked to power relation disputes between militant groups in the region.

In any case, it appears that the two jihadist armed groups are putting aside their differences for the time being in order to repel a now two-month long (and still ongoing) offensive by Syrian army-led forces across Hama which threatens to eject all militant factions from the province.

Earlier it was reported that another rebel group allied to Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham, Jaysh al-Izza, unleashed a hail of artillery fire on a key Russian base in Hama province.

The so-called Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of mostly Kurdish armed militias, has allegedly destroyed several command centers of Turkish-backed militants in northern Syria on Saturday. This is reported by Kurdish-language news outlet Hawar.

SDF destroys Turkish-backed rebel command center
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/sdf-destroys-turkish-backed-rebel-command-center/

The news agency reported that Ankara-backed rebels attacked Kurdish positions in the towns of Maranaz, al-Malekiyeh, Filat al-Qazi and Shawareqah, near the town of Afrin in north-west Syria.

In retaliation, the SDF initiated heavy artillery shelling of the rebel-held town of Azaz, killing four militants and an unknown number of Turkish soldiers as well as destroying an important command center.

Clashes between Turkish-backed militant forces and Kurdish units have increased in ferocity recently, despite the fact that both are considered to be rebel groups by Damascus. The Syrian government and its allies have made numerous calls for both organizations to lay down their arms and cooperate with the peace process in Syria, as well as demanding the Turkish army to withdraw its illegal presence on Syrian soil.

The jihadist-held Beit Jinn pocket in the western countryside of Damascus is on the verge of falling to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) after several weeks of fighting.

Important jihadist bastion near occupied Golan Heights set to fall
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/important-jihadist-bastion-near-occupied-golan-heights-set-fall/

Led by their elite 42nd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Arab Army scored another big advance inside the Beit Jinn pocket this week after capturing the Hanakir area from the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

According to a military source in Damascus, the capture of the Hanakir area has forced the jihadist rebels to once again agree to negotiate with the Syrian Army regarding the possible surrender of this region.

The source added that the battle for the Beit Jinn pocket could be over by the end of the weekend if the negotiations are successful tomorrow morning.

A key pro-Syrian Arab Army faction made up of Syrian-Palestinian volunteers is rallying its forces to support ongoing government operations against jihadist militants in northwest Syria.

Palestinian pro-army brigade moves forces to battle Al-Qaeda in northwest Syria
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/palestinian-pro-army-brigade-moves-forces-battle-al-qaeda-northwest-syria/

According to reports by pro-government sources, the Liwa al-Quds paramilitary faction, which fights on the side of the Syrian Army, is redeploying men and heavy weapons from positions around the city of Aleppo to northeast Hama province.

The Palestinian brigade will partake in ongoing operations by the Syrian Arab Army against Al-Qaeda-linked militants of the Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) terrorist group which maintains a powerful presence in the country’s northwest.

Liwa al-Quds has proven itself time and time again as a reliable ally of the Syrian Army since its formation in 2013.

In various operations in and around Aleppo (including the eventual liberation of the city itself), the Palestinian paramilitary played a crucial role in support army operations to destroy terrorist armed groups.

Australia will pull out its ground forces and warplanes from Syria and Iraq by the end of this year , the country’s Defense Minister, Christopher Pyne announced on Friday.

Australia to pull out forces, warplanes from Syria, Iraq

“Following discussions with Iraq and with members of the international coalition, the Australian government has determined that we will bring home our six Super Hornet strike aircraft from the Middle East,” the Australian Defense Minister stated.

“It has been long. It has been arduous. It has been brutal. All of our personnel made an extraordinary contribution,” the minister concluded.

Australia has been one of the longest serving members of the Anti-ISIS Coalition that was founded by the U.S. in 2014.

Two commanders belonging to the Turkistan Islamic Party jihadist group which operates against Syrian army-led forces in the country’s northwest were found dead recently, having been assassinated by unknown conspirators.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/2-jihadist-commanders-west-china-found-dead-syrias-idlib-region-video/

Footage has been released over social media by opposition sources showing two dead jihadist commanders belonging to the Turkistan Islamic Party militant group in the Syrian province of Idlib.

The bodies of the slain leaders were found near the Sheikh Bahar road in Idlib’s northern countryside. At the present time no information exists as to which individual(s) or group is responsible for the assassination of the two commanders.

The Turkistan Islamic Party is a Salafist jihadist armed group which operates alongside other rebel factions against Syrian army-led forces in northwest Syria. The militia’s fighters are Uyghur invaders from western China who have colonized certain areas inside the country, expelling Syrian Alawite natives in the process.

US War On ISIS Is The Biggest Lie Since The 2003 Iraq Invasion: Here’s The Proof 19 Dec 2017
http://www.thelastamericanvagabond.com/conspiracy/us-war-isis-biggest-lie-since-2003-iraq-invasion-heres-proof/

On November 13, 2017, the BBC dropped a bombshell report that exposed how the U.S. cut a secret deal with “hundreds” of ISIS fighters and their families to leave the Syrian city of Raqqa under the “gaze of the U.S. and British-led coalition and Kurdish-led forces who control the city.” The convoys reportedly included some of ISIS’ “most notorious” members, as well as its foreign fighters and tonnes of weapons and ammunition.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/raqqas_dirty_secret

Almost a month later, Reuters reported that a high-level defector from Kurdish-led forces in Syria had revealed that the number of ISIS fighters given safe passage by the U.S.-led coalition was actually in the thousands, not hundreds. This account was seconded by a security official in Turkey despite the fact that Turkey and the Kurdish militia do not typically see eye to eye).

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-defector/defector-says-thousands-of-islamic-state-fighters-left-raqqa-in-secret-deal-idUSKBN1E12AP

“Agreement was reached for the terrorists to leave, about 4,000 people, them and their families,” the defector said, as quoted by Reuters, adding that all but about 500 were fighters.

The defector also noted that the fighters were headed toward Deir ez-Zor, Syria’s most oil-rich region. The U.S. had been eager to bomb Deir ez-Zor for some time prior to the deal, and allowing ISIS safe passage to get there would merely give them the pretext to do so. In June of this year, regional outlet Al-Masdar released a video that appeared to show convoys of ISIS fighters leaving Raqqa, as well, though the media paid very little attention to this.

http://theantimedia.org/video-us-allowing-isis-escape-syria/ (Video)

All of this begs the question: If the U.S. allowed 4,000 ISIS fighters to leave Raqqa, who on earth were they bombing during their brutal siege?
Donald Trump’s illegal air campaign killed well over 1,800 civilians and brought the city to ruin — to the point that Russia accused the U.S. of wiping Raqqa “off the face of the earth.” The U.S. government knew ISIS was leaving the city safely but kept on bombing it into devastation, anyway.

Raqqa Secret Deal Barely Scratches the Surface

Now that we know the U.S. is amenable to granting ISIS fighters safe passage, ISIS’ ability to take over huge swaths of Iraq and Syria in the first place start to make a bit more sense. In June 2014, ISIS effortlessly took the strategic oil-rich cities of Mosul and Baiji and almost made it as far as Baghdad. The U.S. sat on its hands and did nothing the entire time, even as the militants took massive loads of American military equipment as spoils and brandished it all over social media. While ISIS was flaunting its activities untouched by the American military in Iraq, the U.S. was busy launching drone strikes in Pakistan, instead.

Why would the Obama administration prioritize air strikes in a country that overwhelmingly disapproves of them when it could have prevented ISIS from setting up a mini-state in Iraq at the same time?

Over the last few years, we have seen this similar pattern occur over and over again. When it came to Obama’s grand offensive to retake Mosul in 2016, reports also began emerging that the U.S. was granting safe passage for ISIS fighters to move from Mosul into Raqqa. Even if the U.S. hadn’t cut a formal deal with ISIS on this particular occasion, the reality on the ground was that the U.S. was allowing ISIS fighters to make their way into Syria from Mosul and doing little to stop them regardless. As Anti-Media documented at the time:

“According to Army Lieutenant General Talib Shaghati, as reported by anti-Russian newspaper, the Guardian, ISIS militants are already fleeing Mosul to Syria. This was further confirmed by the Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, who said that if ISIS were forced out of Mosul, they would likely go on to Syria.”

Why weren’t they striking these traveling ISIS fighters before they made it to Syria? When viewed in its recent historical context and with the most recent reports in mind, the answer to that question should be clear.

The U.S. Has Also Provided ISIS With Direct Air Support

The Syrian government and its allies are the most heavily engaged entities fighting ISIS inside Syria – not the U.S. military (or its allies). Yet the U.S. military has struck these pro-government forces directly multiple times over the last year, even when these troops have proven to be very effective against the jihadist group.

In September 2016, the U.S.-led coalition launched a barrage of airstrikes at Syrian government troops who were fending off the ISIS component of Deir ez-Zor at the time. Russia accused the U.S. coalition of providing air cover for ISIS because the terror group used the coalition strike to launch an offensive of their own. Over 60 Syrian soldiers died as a result of this illegal act of war, but no one was held accountable.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/18/world/middleeast/us-airstrike-syrian-troops-isis-russia.html?mtrref=www.google.ws

It has also been speculated that U.S. President Donald Trump’s Syria strike in April paved the way for an ISIS offensive, as well.

ISIS Took Advantage of U.S. Weapons Transfers

So far, we know that ISIS has received safe passage from the U.S. on at least one occasion and that the terror group has also received free air support on a number of other occasions. We also know the U.S. either directly or indirectly allowed ISIS to gain territory in the first place only to provide the pretext for a military intervention.

But wait, it gets even better. Just this month, a report conducted by the U.K.-based Conflict Armament Research (CAR) group, which analyzed 40,000 items its investigators recovered along ISIS’ front lines between July 2014 and November 2017, found that the terror group was able to successfully arm itself by taking advantage of U.S. weapons transfers between Washington and its other allies in Syria. ISIS even garnered some of the more powerful anti-tank missiles through the CIA’s covert arms program.

“International weapon supplies to factions in the Syrian conflict have significantly augmented the quantity and quality of weapons available to IS forces — in numbers far beyond those that would have been available to the group through battlefield capture alone,” the report said.

The U.S. didn’t need to wait for an official report for this horrifying development to come to light. As far back as October 2012, the New York Times reported the following:

“[M]ost of the arms shipped at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to supply Syrian rebel groups fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad are going to hard-line Islamic jihadists, and not the more secular opposition groups that the West wants to bolster…” [emphasis added]

Even if the U.S. had zero control over ISIS and the mayhem it has exacted over Iraq, Syria, and beyond — and was genuine in its bid to rid the world of its ideology and the horror the terror group has unleashed — there is one issue yet to be discussed: ISIS’ existence.

US Created Conditions for ISIS to Exist

ISIS evolved out of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), which only became a formidable fighting force after the U.S. invaded in 2003. This was in part due to the Bush administration’s decision to fire close to 400,000 servicemen in Iraq, simply because of their affiliation with Saddam Hussein’s secular Baathist party. Some of these disgruntled servicemen now hold senior ISIS positions and are responsible for the terror group’s success.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/05/23/sprj.nitop.army.dissolve/

History clearly demonstrates that al-Qaeda only exists in the first place because the U.S. actively trained, funded, and armed the mujahideen in Afghanistan as a means of bogging the Soviet empire down into a quagmire. The Independent even ran a story on Osama bin Laden at the time, portraying him as a heroic freedom fighter and “anti-Soviet warrior.”

However, since 9/11, the U.S. made a specific point of making aiding and providing material support to al-Qaeda and its affiliated organizations a crime under U.S. law. Yet the U.S. has openly aided Syria’s al-Qaeda branch, as well as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in Yemen, and now we have more than enough formal proof that the U.S. has knowingly continued a foreign policy strategy that essentially provided all manner of material support to ISIS, one of the most deadly terror groups in recent history, as well.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that his country’s participation in the war on terrorism in Syria has contributed to killing more than 60,000 terrorists and the destruction of 8,000 vehicles used by terrorist organizations.

Russia: Over 60,000 Terrorists Killed, 8,000 Vehicles Destroyed in Syria since September 2015
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961002001434

Shoigu said, at a meeting of the Russian military command, that 60,318 terrorists – including 2,800 who had been born in Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States – were killed as a result of the military operations carried out by the Russian forces against the terrorist organizations in Syria, revealing that the number of Russian soldiers who were involved in the operations reached 48,000 soldiers, SNAN reported on Saturday.

He said that the Russian demining experts, alongside the Syrian military engineering units, cleared mines from 6,533 hectares, 1,410 km of roads, and 17,138 buildings.

Shoigu went on to say that Russian ships and the submarines carried out 100 strikes against terrorists in Syria, while the strategic bombers carried out 66,000 sorties, all of which resulted in the destruction of 8,000 armored vehicles used by terrorists.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad said that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terror organization is just another ISIL

Syria: PKK Another ISIL in Region
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961002001261

Mikdad said that the PKK is fighting to protect Americans' interests and aims to divide Syria, al-Alam reported.

“They cannot be trusted because they are forces serving the Americans and the plans of the west against the Syrian people," the Syrian diplomat added.

He further said that the PKK is to overthrow the Syrian state and breakup the country, adding, “They are not working for the Syrian people".

Mikdad, one of the prominent figures in Syrian President Bashar Assad's administration, also said that the PKK terror organization does not accept being part of the Syrian Arab Republic, and if it continues to be a puppet of the US and western countries, it will share the same fate as the ISIL.

He also revealed in his statement that the PKK is using territories under its occupation to blackmail Damascus in order to secure its political interests.

The US has provided the PYD/YPG, which are Syrian branches of the terrorist organization, with over 4,000 trucks containing weapons to reportedly use against the ISIL, despite Ankara’s warnings that they are offshoots of the PKK.

US President Donald Trump has approved providing weapons worth $393 million to its partners in Syria despite Ankara's concerns over the continued delivery of heavy weapons and armored vehicles to PKK's Syrian offshoot the People's Protection Units (YPG).

US to Resume Aid for YPG in 2018 as Trump Approves $393mln Syria Weapons List
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961003001176

The US President signed the list prepared by Pentagon in May on Dec. 12, 18 days after his phone conversation with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during which he was quoted as "openly instructing his generals to no longer give weapons to the YPG, Daily Sabah reported.

"He openly said that this absurdity should have ended much earlier," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had told reporters after the phone call.

The list included a total of 12,000 AK-47 Kalashnikov rifles worth $6.3 million, 60,000 Kalashnikov clips worth $420,000 and 6,000 machineguns worth $20.3 million.

The weapons list did not give any direct reference to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) or its dominating group YPG but instead mentioned the Vetted Syrian Opposition (VSO).

Ankara considers the YPG a terror organization because of its organic links with the PKK terror organization.

Accordingly, sophisticated weapons will continue to be sent to Syria in 2018, including thousands of anti-tank rocket launchers, heat seeking missiles and rocket launchers.

In addition, some $1.2 billion budget was reserved for Iraq and another $500 million was reserved for Syria as a part of the train-equip fund in 2018, according to the list.

The Pentagon's Syria strategy for 2018 also outlined an increase in the number of Arab elements within the SDF.

According to the budget list, there are a total of 25,000 opposition forces supported as a part of the train and equip program in Syria. That number is planned to be increased to 30,000 in 2018.

The Syrian Army troops are preparing for attacking the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces in Deir Ezzur to capture the oil and gas fields under their control after President Bashar al-Assad blasted the Kurds' betrayal to the country and their close cooperation with the American invaders, media sources disclosed on Sunday.

Syrian Army Preparing for Recapturing Energy-Rich Regions Occupied by Kurds
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961003000810

The Arabic-language al-Hadath news quoted the Russian papers as saying that the Syrian intelligence service rests assured that Kurds and the US officers played a key role in evacuating ISIL's Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and seven of his close aids from his hideout in Iraq to a US-run base in Ra'as al-Ein and then to Rmeilan in Hasaka province in Northeastern Syria.

Al-Hadath further said that the Kurdish militants are likely to retreat from Eastern Syria in the new year, adding that the Syrian Army's elite units are now prepared to take control of oil and gas fields on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River that the Kurds occupied with the US back up.

It went on to say that the Syrian Army plan to use an assault strategy similar to the Iraqi troops' Kirkuk liberation operation.

According to the report, the Syrian Army Command plans to give the last ultimatum to the Kurds to deliver control of oil and gas fields to the government troops before waging the attack.

Militant-affiliated websites reported earlier this month that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured three more regions in Eastern Deir Ezzur and deployed closer to the Syrian Army position, increasing the possibility of direct confrontation with government forces.

The websites reported that the SDF imposed control over the villages of Abu Hammam and al-Hayan and the town of Daranj in Eastern countryside of Deir Ezzur city near the defense lines of the army men.

The websites added that the SDF's advances close to the army positions doubled the possibility of direct confrontation between the two sides.

The Syrian Army soldiers ambushed a military column of the terrorists that left the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights for militant-run bases in Southwestern Damascus, inflicting major losses on the terrorists, an Arab media outlet reported on Sunday.

http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961003000848

The Arabic-language website of AMN reported that the army men ambushed a group of terrorists that tried to penetrate from Israeli-held occupied lands into Beit Jinn in Southwestern Damascus via Jabal (mount) al-Harmoun and destroyed the column.

The AMN reported that the army's missile and artillery units shelled heavily the convoy as soon as it entered the government-held regions, killing a large number of militants.

It added that the remaining pockets of the terrorists crossed the borderline and fled to occupied lands in the Golan Heights.

People in the occupied parts of Syria’s Golan Heights held a protest to condemn what they called Israel’s support for anti-Damascus terrorists in Early November.

The demonstrators accused Israel of backing the al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board), during its assault on the government-held town of Hader in Quneitra province.

Israeli forces were deployed to the area to disperse the protesters.

The Syrian Army troops repelled a heavy offensive of Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) in Southern Aleppo, killing ten of militants, field sources reported on Sunday.

The sources said that the army men fought Al-Nusra back from their positions along a road connecting the town of Khan Touman to the Warehouses in the region.

The sources said that the army soldiers, backed up by the artillery and missile units, fended off the attack and killed 30 terrorists, destroying 8 vehicles and a large volume of military hardware.

The remaining pockets of Al-Nusra left behind their dead comrades and their equipment and retreated under the heavy fire of army units.

Relevant reports said on Friday that the army men engaged in heavy fighting with terrorists in a region between the town of Khan Touman and Air Defense Battalion Base and fended off their attack after killing a number of them and destroying their equipment.

In the meantime, the army's artillery and missile units pounded terrorists' positions in the village of Hobar and Rmeileh and Siyaleh regions in Southern Aleppo, killing or wounding a number of terrorists.

Ankara-backed militants launched a heavy offensive against the positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Afrin and captured tens of civilians in the town of al-Bab in Northern Aleppo, a Kurdish media outlet reported on Sunday.

http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961003001311

The Kurdish-language Hawar news reported that the Turkey-backed militant groups' missile and artillery units launched a heavy shelling on the villages of Sankarli, Khirbet Shera, Basoufian and Ba'eiyeh in Shera region in Afrin.

Hawar news also quoted al-Bab Military Council as reporting that the Turkish army men have conducted attacks on several villages North of al-Bab, arresting a large number of civilians, including 40 Kurds and transferred them to an unknown destination.

Most of the arrests are happening in the villages of Tal Batal, Qa'ar Kalbin, Jadoud and the small town of Qabassin whose residents are mostly Kurds.

Hawar news said on Saturday that the SDF shelled the positions of the Ankara-backed militants in Northern Aleppo, destroying their command centers.

It reported that the Turkish Army troops and their militant allies attacked SDF's positions in the villages of Maranaz, al-Malekiyeh, Filat al-Qazi and Shawareqah in Shera region near the town of Afrin.

Hawar news further said that the SDF's artillery and mortar units retaliated and pounded the positions of the Ankara-backed militants in the town of Azaz, destroying a command center, a military vehicle and killing four militants.

Several Turkish soldiers were killed in the attack, some field reports said.

Clashes between the SDF and Ankara-sponsored militants are underway in Shirawa and al-Shahba regions in Northern Aleppo.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said on a two-day visit to the peninsula that the authority of US foreign policy should be supported by the army’s readiness for war, now that “storm clouds” are gathering over the Koreas.

Defense Secretary to US Troops: ‘Storm Clouds Gathering' over Korean Peninsula, ‘You Gotta Be Ready’
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961003000405

“My fine young soldiers, the only way our diplomats can speak with authority and be believed is if you’re ready to go,” Mattis told the troops, RT reported.

The defense secretary pointed out that there are important lessons to be gained from history, saying “Knowing what went wrong the last time around is as important as knowing your own testing, so that you’re forewarned – you know what I’m driving at here. So you gotta be ready.”

Mattis, however, hasn’t given up hope on a peaceful solution yet.

As long as words and rhetoric are the only things being exchanged between the two sides, and diplomacy is “going positively,” there will be no need for evacuations or increase of troops, he noted, reassuring the silent troops that there is still time to work out a peaceful resolution to the nuclear standoff.

“I don’t think it’s at that point yet,” he continued, adding that the evacuation of American civilians would damage the South Korean economy, but should the need arise; the contingency plan would be carried out “on very short notice.”

Mattis believes that North Korea would not dare to disrupt the Winter Olympics, which will be held in South Korea in February.

“I don’t think [North Korean leader] Kim [Jong-un] is stupid enough to take on the whole world by killing their athletes,” he said.

Nevertheless, if belief in assured peace dulls the senses and preparedness of the soldiers, “there is very little reason for optimism,” he added.

As the families of the nearly 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea were preparing for the holidays, with growing concerns over possible evacuations from the peninsula, Mattis arrived with ominous words.

His comments follow US President Donald Trump’s bellicose rhetoric against North Korea and his threats of “fire and fury.” Mattis’ visit coincides with the increased pressure put on North Korea’s economy from the sanctions unanimously approved by the UN Security Council, targeting expatriate workers from North Korea, who countries will be obligated to expel under the sanctions. The sanctions also aim to sharply reduce the sale of energy resources by North Korea.

An air defense regiment in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East upgraded its arsenal with advanced S-400 system batteries amid the ongoing crisis involving North Korea, which borders Russia and is 130km from the city.

Russia Sends More S-400 SAMs to Far East Amid North Korea Tensions
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961003000174

The 1533th Regiment was previously armed with three older S-300SP systems, but received the modern S-400 Triumf batteries this year. The S-400 has a range of 600km, compared to the 400km range of the older surface-to-air missile, and has better target tracking and simultaneous engagement capabilities. The service members trained to use them earlier in 2017 and confirmed their expertise at the Kapustin Yar range in central Russia, the regiment commander, Col. Aleksey Morokov, told journalists after a deployment ceremony, RT reported.

The regiment is part of Russia’s air defense command in the Eastern Military District. Its fellow 589th Air Defense Regiment, which belongs to the same division and is stationed in the city of Nakhodka 80km to the east, has had S-400 batteries for some time. But the new batteries in Vladivostok will boost the Russian military’s ability to scan airspace in the region, raising its operational awareness.

Tensions have been running high over North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests, as the US resorts to belligerent rhetoric and demonstrations of force in an attempt to force Pyongyang to disarm. Russia and China, both of which border North Korea and would likely suffer from a large-scale war in the region, are calling on Washington to negotiate with Pyongyang a solution which would respect each nation’s security concerns.

Looks like the U.S/NATO/Pentagon are setting the stage for a direct confrontation with Turkey?

The latest Pentagon campaign aimed to alter the region’s map in order to encircle Turkey by setting up an ‘American Axis’ that stretches from Hungary all the way to the Persian Gulf.

US Attempts to Encircle Turkey by Increasing Troop Numbers in Region
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961004000551

After the US published its annual National Security Strategy (NSS) report a few days ago which designated China and Russia as competitors, Turkey was left out of the document without being mentioned as either ‘adversary’ or ‘ally’, Yeni Safak reported.

The 68-page document, which was released by the Donald Trump administration, lists Saudi Arabia and Egypt among ‘friend-ally’ countries.

The absence of any mention of Turkey in the US document is the latest in a series of developments that point to the deteriorating relations between the two NATO allies, as Washington continues to openly cooperate with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)’s Syria offshoot, the PYD, despite repeated objections by Ankara, and continues its attempts to encircle Turkey by increasing the numbers of its troops in the region from 40,000 just a few a months ago, as declared by the Pentagon, to 65,000 today.

The biggest increase in US troops was in Turkish bases as their numbers doubled in just two months, reaching 4,000.

The numbers of American troops deployed to Turkey’s army base in Qatar increased from 3,000 to 7,000 in the last 3 months alone.

The US also has sizeable troops stationed in Bahrain, Kuwait and Syria.

This marks the biggest deployment of US forces to the region since the end of the Cold War, which has been done under the pretext of NATO, in an attempt to encircle Turkey from the West.

The US has also deployed additional troops and munitions to Eastern Europe, in countries such as Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, among others.

The latest Pentagon campaign aims to alter the region’s map in order to encircle Turkey by setting up an ‘American Axis’ that stretches from Hungary through Bosnia Herzegovina, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, all the way toward the Persian Gulf.

Despite repeated reassurances that claim it is being set up as a defensive line against Russia, the true aim for this project is Turkey and Iran.

The US also threatens Turkey from the South through its support for PKK terrorists in Norther Syria, who received over 4,000 truckloads of weapons and munitions from the Pentagon over the past months.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the Southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.

The US has provided the PYD/YPG, which are Syrian branches of the terrorist organization, with over 4,000 trucks containing weapons to reportedly use against the fight with ISIL, despite Ankara’s warnings that they are offshoots of the PKK.

In the coming days, Turkey is preparing to launch an operation to clear PKK terrorists from Afrin and areas under their occupation West of the Euphrates Shield Operations regions.

It is only a matter of time before a possible confrontation between Turk and American troops takes place either in Euphrates Shield regions or in Afrin and Manbij.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that its forces are well-prepared to face the Turkish army and its affiliated military groups after the Turkish forces threatened to attack the town of Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo, a media outlet reported on Monday.

http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961004000628

Al-Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted Head of the Democratic Unity Joint Party Ayesha Hasou as saying that the entire residents in the town of Afrin are at the highest level of preparedness to defend their town against possible attack by the Turkish troops and their affiliated militants.

Hasou further told the paper that ever since the escalation of crisis in Syria, Afrin has been under siege in three directions and from the side of Turkey, has been under repeated air attacks and different threats.

"Afrin will be turned into Turkish invaders' graveyard similar to Kobani and Raqqa that became the graveyards of ISIL," she underlined.

The Kurdish-language Hawar news reported on Sunday that the Turkey-backed militant groups' missile and artillery units launched a heavy shelling on the villages of Sankarli, Khirbet Shera, Basoufian and Ba'eiyeh in Shera region in Afrin.

Hawar news also quoted al-Bab Military Council as reporting that the Turkish army men have conducted attacks on several villages North of al-Bab, arresting a large number of civilians, including 40 Kurds and transferred them to an unknown destination.

The Lebanese Army arrested a large number of Syrian militants belonging to the Al-Qaeda linked Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham jihadist group in the disputed Sheba’a Farms on Saturday, a military communique read.

According to the communique, the Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham militants were arrested by the Lebanese Army during a raid near the Israeli border on Saturday; they would also confiscate a large quantity of weapons and ammunition that were stored in this area by the jihadists.

The Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham militants use the Sheba’a Farms to navigate back and forth from Israel in order to carry out attacks against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies in the nearby Golan Heights.

This is also not the first time the Lebanese military has cracked down on these HTS sleeper cells in the disputed Sheba’a Farms, as their forces have made several prior arrests in this area in 2017.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) kicked off the third phase of their Beit Jinn offensive, today, following the capture of all the hilltops and farms located north and south of Mughar Al-Mir.

Syrian Army kicks off 3rd phase of Beit Jinn offensive
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/breaking-syrian-army-kicks-off-3rd-phase-beit-jinn-offensive/

Using surface-to-surface missiles and ATGMs, the Syrian Army inflicted a powerful blow on the jihadist defenses this afternoon, paving the way for their forces to storm the area to begin phase three of this operation.

According to a military source, the Syrian Army’s missile assault scored several direct hits west of the Beit Jinn Farms; this attack managed to kill several militants from Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, while also destroying a vehicle fitted with a 23mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

In response to this massive assault by the Syrian Army, the jihadist rebels shelled the government-held town of Harfah, killing two civilians in the process.

The Syrian Army is now demanding the jihadist rebels surrender all of their points in the Beit Jinn pocket or else the government forces will storm their positions and not give them the same terms of surrender again.

The Syrian Army troops transferred safely ten families from al-Rukban refugee camp in a region under the control of the US-backed militant groups near the border with Jordan, military sources confirmed on Monday.

Syrian Army Evacuates Safely Tens of Refugees from Camp in Region Controlled by US-Backed Militants
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961004000386

The sources said that the army units paved the ground for evacuating 70 refugees from 10 families from al-Rukban camp near the border with Jordan.

The sources further said that the refugees - that were mainly children and women - returned to their villages and region in Eastern Homs after the army guaranteed their safe passage.

Humanitarian condition in al-Rukban has deteriorated due to the militant groups' control over the region, the sources said, adding that terrorists do not allow dispatch of medicine and food stuff to the camp.

A source familiar with the situation reported earlier this month that militant groups blocked roads and forbade refugees from leaving the al-Rukban camp, located in the US zone of influence on the Syria-Jordan border.

Quwwat Shahid Ahmad Abdu militants installed roadblocks in the al-Tanf region and are not allowing refugees to leave the al-Rukban camp, who are trying to leave the US-controlled 55 –kilometer zone," the source said.

The Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) has started looting a number of historical artifacts from one of the most important museums of the country in Idlib city, local sources reported on Monday.

Terrorists Plunder Museum's Artifacts in Northwestern Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961004000950

The sources said that the Al-Nusra has transferred secretly the entire historical artifacts and precious collections from an important museum in Idlib city to an unknown location in the last few days without informing the museum's staff.

The sources said that a group of Al-Nusra terrorists from Hama province tried a week ago to enter the national museum but faced the guards, adding that the Al-Nusra group later called on opposition-affiliated Civil Department and took permission to enter the museum.

The council further dismissed the guards and appointed new guards for the museum, the sources added.

The museum- that is one of the most important museums in Syria, was built in 1987 and was home to a large number of valuable monuments and artifacts from several regions of the province whose antiquity date back to the third millennium BC up to Islamic era.

An Arab media outlet reported in November that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) excavated several historical regions in Aleppo province and transferred a number of artifacts to a US-run base in the Northern part of the province.

The Arabic-language al-Watan online quoted well-informed sources as reporting that the SDF started to dig in several regions close to the town of Manbij in Northeastern Aleppo.

It went on to say that the SDF's excavation operation was carried out mainly near the al-Feran al-Ehti'yati (the reserve furnace) region in the town of Manbij, adding that the SDF did not allow any civilians to enter or ever approach the excavation sites.

Al-Watan further said that a large ancient inscription on stone was unearthed in excavation operation, adding that the SDF later transferred the inscription stone by several trucks to a US-run base near the small town of Tharin close to Manbij.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the US military presence in Syria hinders the political process and calls into question unity of the country.

Russian FM: US Military Presence in Syria Hinders Political Process
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961004000500

"The Syrian government could de facto ‘tolerate' the Unites States there for the sake of a pressing task of anti-terror. Attempts to find justification for the preservation of their presence in Syria after the defeat of ISIL do not stand up to criticism. In practical terms, the illegal presence of the US military creates obstacles to the political settlement and calls into question the unity of the country," Lavrov told RIA Novosti on Monday.

The Russian Foreign Minister also added that there is no new “Iron Curtain” between Russia and the US.

“I don’t think that the term ‘Iron Curtain’ could be applied to Russia-US relations at the current stage,” Lavrov said, predicting that relations between the two world powers will improve, though time which could have been used to mend ties has been wasted.

However, a number of actions had been taken by the American side which did not help to warm US-Russia ties, the top diplomat said.

Among others, he noted economic sanctions imposed on Moscow and seizure of its diplomatic property on American soil, as well as restrictions placed on Russian media.

While there is a new outbreak of McCarthyism in the United States, there are also some reasons to be optimistic about the future of US-Russia relations, Lavrov added.

“I am personally confident that, just like everyone got tired of a witch hunt launched by Senator Joseph McCarthy once upon a time, there will be a sobering up and recovery [of bilateral relations],” he stated.

Moscow, for its part, is not planning to stir up confrontation with Washington but will repel any aggressive move against itself, the Foreign Minister went on, adding that Russia was “acting pragmatically,” despite growing anti-Russia sentiments in the American capital.

Lavrov underlined that “we will continue to consistently and vigorously defend our position by bringing our colleagues in Washington back to the fundamental principles on which a bilateral dialogue should be built.”

In the meantime, the degree of “Russophobic hysteria” in Washington is reaching new heights, Lavrov said, before adding that “It does not allow us to move forward in areas important for our countries and provokes additional tension in the international arena.”

Exactly like the dialogue with Washington, Moscow is pursuing a reserved policy towards other pressing issues, Lavrov said, taking aim at North Korea, adding that Russia “will never tolerate nor welcome” Pyongyang’s desire to become a nuclear power, but attempts to pressure and blockade North Korea are equally dangerous.

Instead of drawing “red lines” and trying to punish Pyongyang, Moscow stands for making steady efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, Lavrov said.

He added that some states advocating blockade on North Korea ought to know that “the execution of such a plan would cause a genuine humanitarian disaster.”

According to Al Masdar media outlet, terrorists have allegedly first captured the pilot and then killed him, however, the information hasn't yet been neither officially confirmed nor denied. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

The Syrian government, with the support of Russian servicemen from the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation, organizes the evacuation of refugees from the Al-Rukban camp on the Syrian-Jordanian border, Haj Adel, coordinator of the peace process and security in Homs province's border areas, told reporters.

Syrian Gov't, Russian Military Evacuating Refugees From Al-Rukban Camp
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712261060321696-al-rukban-camp-syria-refugees-evacuation/

We, jointly with the Syrian Arab Army, with the support of Russian military specialists stationed in the locality of Tadmor, were able to establish contact with the Al-Rukban refugee camp in order to organize the evacuation of refugees who for some reason were unable to leave the camp on their own, to their native places," Adel said, adding that there is a group of militants in Al-Rukban comprising people who had fled the Daesh terrorist group (banned in Russia) after its defeat in Syria.

The statement was made after reports emerged last week that militants of illegal armed groups were blocking roads, preventing refugees from leaving the camp, located in the Homs province some 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of the At-Tanf settlement and inside the US-controlled zone on the Syrian-Jordanian border.

The al-Rukban refugee camp has come under the spotlight since early November when the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria has accused the United States of establishing a training camp near the site, aiming to form a new "moderate opposition" out of various militia groups, following a similar statement of the Russian Defense Ministry, slamming Washington's move as "a war crime," since it prevented the Syrian government from setting up a safe corridor for the delivery of humanitarian supplies to refugees.

The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria has also mentioned another camp last week, the al-Hasakah, claimed to be used as a base for training militants.

According to a Russian defense official, the US instructors from the Special Operations Forces supervise a new armed group called the "New Syrian Army", allegedly announcing that after the training the groups would be sent to southern Syria to fight against government troops.

The US-led coalition has denied these accusations, calling them "absurd."

Russia has started forming a permanent group in Syria's Tartus and Hmeymim, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said during a conference call.

Russia Starts Forming Permanent Groups in Syria's Tartus, Hmeymim Bases - Shoigu
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712261060321937-russia-tartus-base-syria/

"Last week, the supreme commander-in-chief approved the structure and staff of the main bases in Tartus and Hmeymim. We've started forming a permanent group there," Shoigu said.

The Federation Council, the upper house of Russia's parliament, has ratified the agreement with Syria to expand the Russian naval facility in Syria's Tartus on December 26.

The statement follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's surprise visit to the Hmeymim airbase on December 11, and his order to start the withdrawal of the main part of Russian troop contingents in the region back to their permanent location, with the bases in Hmeymim and Tartus maintaining their operation.

The minister went on to say that the Russian armed forces are equipped with modern weapons at 59.5%, while the serviceability of weapons is at 94%. The anti-aircraft defense of the Hmeymim airbase is ensured by the cutting edge S-400 system, while S-300 surface-to-air missile systems, as well as the Bastion coastal missile systems with cruise missiles, cover the Russian Navy base in Tartus.

In his previous statements, Shoigu specified that the Russian military contingent had already begun the pullout from Syria, noting, however, that the timetable of the withdrawal would be determined by the situation on the ground.

Russia began a two-year long military campaign in Syria in late September 2015 at the request of Assad to fight Daesh, resulting in the clearing out of more than 90 percent of Daesh-held territories, including the ancient city of Palmyra, and killing of over 54,000 terrorists.

However, Russia continues its humanitarian assistance to the war-torn country, delivering tons of aid and providing medical support on a daily basis.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured another oilfield in Eastern Deir Ezzur, dissident-affiliated websites reported on Tuesday, adding that the SDF is now one step closer to direct clashes with the Syrian Army.

SDF's Advances in Energy-Rich Region Increase Possibility of Direct Confrontation with Syria Army
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961005001442

The news websites reported that the SDF imposed full control over Murad oilfield on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzur province and the two small towns of al-Hasyan and Abu Hardoub in the region.

In the meantime, field sources said that the SDF invasion of more oilfields in Eastern Deir Ezzur has increased the possibility of direct confrontation with the army soldiers who mission is mainly capturing control over the energy-rich regions.

Media sources disclosed on Sunday the Syrian Army troops were preparing for attacking the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces in Deir Ezzur to capture the oil and gas fields under their control after President Bashar al-Assad blasted the Kurds' betrayal to the country and their close cooperation with the American invaders.

According to the report, the Syrian Army Command plans to give the last ultimatum to the Kurds to deliver control of oil and gas fields to the government troops before waging the attack.

The recent remarks by the Damascus officials about the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are a type of warning to the Kurds, specially after Deputy Foreign Minister Feisal Mikdad asked them to withdraw from the areas controlled by them not to experience ISIL's fate, a Syrian analyst said on Tuesday.

Syrian Army Going Impatient with SDF
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961005000947

Kamel Saqar noted that there are signs of differences between the two sides, specially over the SDF's control over vast areas in the Northern and Eastern parts of Syria, saying, "The recent comments are considered as the start of a new military phase in Eastern Syria and the army might go impatient with the Kurds in coming days."

He referred to the regional agreement among the Syrian, Iraq, Iranian and Turkish officials to prevent formation of a separatist government by the SDF, and said that the agreement was made after the Kurds adopted two measures.

He referred to the regional agreement among the Syrian, Iraq, Iranian and Turkish officials to prevent formation of a separatist government by the SDF, and said that the agreement was made after the Kurds adopted two measures.

Safar underlined that at present, the Syrian army has ended battle against the terrorist groups in 90 percent of the geographical regions in Syria and it would rationally take military action to win back areas controlled by the Kurds, based on field and political priorities.

Both great powers, Russia and the USA, recently claimed victory over the Islamic State (aka Daesh, ISIS, ISIL) in Syria, but only one did the right thing in response.

US Coalition Out of Syria Now!
https://www.globalresearch.ca/us-coalition-out-of-syria-now/5623934

President Putin of the Russian Federation flew to Syria to announce deep cuts to its troop and equipment commitments in Syria and to assure President Assad of Syria and the Syrian people that Russian troops would return immediately if ISIS terrorists reared their ugly heads again in his country.

Russia has been open and transparent with the whole world about its military commitments in Syria, right down to actual troop numbers and types of military aircraft. President Putin stated moreover that Russia would continue to maintain one naval and one airbase inside Syria.

How can Putin say and do these things in Syria? The answer is that Russia, like Iran, has maintained a military alliance with Syria for several decades and has, in addition, signed many political, economic, and cultural agreements with Syria. The Russian military intervention in Syria, starting on Sept 30, 2015, was at the invitation of the sovereign government in Damascus and was in compliance with international law. This was backed with proactive and constructive support for both the reconciliation and dialogue initiatives which was complemented by the Syrian government simultaneously announcing a program of reconciliation with “rebels” of Syrian origin, a program which saw some 20,000 Syrian “rebels” lay down their arms and reintegrate with their families in the main Syrian society to defend and rebuild Syria.

The US presence in Syria, on the other hand, has been in flagrant violation of international law. It’s true that the USA had the permission of the sovereign government of Iraq to fight the Islamic State in Iraq. However, it lacked such permission from the government of Syria and from the United Nations Security Council.

Like Russia, the USA recently declared victory over the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and announced that it would continue to maintain a military presence in Syria. Unlike Russia, it has never been open and transparent with the world about either its troop commitments or its real intentions in Syria.

For example, the USA lied to the world about its covert support to the Islamic State in Syria (and Iraq). It lied about its Coalition’s alleged purpose “to degrade and destroy ISIS.” In fact, until the Russian military offensive in Syria in 2015, the US Coalition never even bothered to bomb the convoys of tanker trucks smuggling Syrian oil to Turkey, or the convoys of transport trucks carrying supplies from Turkey to ISIS-held cities in Syria and Iraq, or the convoys of ISIS fighters that travelled across hundreds of kilometres of open desert in broad daylight to capture and destroy the Syrian world heritage site of Palmyra. Rather, Coalition planes attacked Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions on several occasions, on behalf of ISIS, at Deir Ezzor, Al Tanf, and other locations. Most recently, the USA oversaw the rescue of thousands of the Islamic State’s last remaining fighters from Raqqah and brought the terrorists in a convoy with their heavy equipment to Coalition-held territory in the northeast corner of Syria, east of the Euphrates River. That triangular corner of Syria contains some Kurdish and Arab tribes, about half of Syria’s petrochemical resources, and a large swath of good agricultural land.

Today, we know, through a slip of the tongue on the part of US Major-General Jarrard, that the USA now has 4000 soldiers in Syria, though officially it claims only 500.1 Thanks to the Turkish government, which supplied their GPS locations, we have also learned that the USA has built ten military bases in that corner of the country, all of which are illegal since they were not approved by the government of Syria. In fact, the continuing US presence in Syria constitutes an illegal occupation. Nevertheless, US military and political leaders, such as Secretary of State Tillerson, have indicated that they intend to stay indefinitely inside Syria.

Why? Because a continuing US military presence in Syria allows the USA to pressure the Syrian government regarding the terms of the inevitable political settlement of the Syrian conflict. From its vantage point in NE Syria, the USA could continue militarily to threaten Damascus – not TO mention other nearby states such as Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran – and to make life miserable for Syrians, such as by supporting roving bands of ISIS terrorists or ISIS missile attacks on Syrian communities.

However, a number of military analysts have observed that the US occupation of the NE corner of Syria is not viable. That chunk of sovereign Syrian territory is surrounded on all three sides by potentially hostile forces: Turkish, Iraqi, and Syrian. All of the Kurdish and Arab tribes who live in this triangle have abandoned any allegiance they may once have had to the US Coalition and its so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). So, the only allies the USA has on the ground in that part of Syria are those (rescued) ISIS terrorist mercenaries who have nominally switched allegiances. Hardly a solid military position…

The Syria Solidarity Movement maintains that the USA does NOT hold exceptional status regarding international law. We regard the US occupation of any part of Syria as a war crime and we call upon the USA and its Coalition partners to get out of Syria now. In addition, we demand the following:
◾the USA forces withdraw from Syria and disband its Coalition allegedly to “degrade and destroy ISIS”;
◾the USA end its unilateral (and therefore) illegal economic sanctions against Syria;
◾the USA disband the so-called “Friends of Syria Group” of countries (FSG) which organized the proxy war against Syria;
◾the USA and its coalition and FSG partners restore diplomatic relations with Syria and come to the UN peace process, without any preconditions, to bring a speedy end to the Syrian conflict.

A senior U.S. military commander said Tuesday that 4,000 American troops are on the ground in Syria, a figure far greater than the 503 personnel the Trump administration says are deployed there.

Syria’s armed opposition groups intend to shun the upcoming Syria National Dialogue Congress in Russia's Sochi because they are afraid that their western and regional allies may devoid them of backing if they join the conference, a representative of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), Tarek Ahmad, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Syrian Party Says Armed Groups to Skip Sochi Congress Fearing Loss of Backers
https://sputniknews.com/world/201712261060336195-syria-congress-sochi-opposition/

"This statement is an indicator that the United States, along with some European countries and some regional powers are disappointed with Russia’s recent military and diplomatic successes and a breakthrough between Russia, Turkey and Iran following last week’s eighth round of the Astana talks. The rebels, supported by these states, are afraid that they may lose the backing of their sponsors if they go to Sochi," Ahmad said.

According to the opposition figure, the upcoming Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi could become an opportunity for a breakthrough in the negotiation process which reached a stalemate at the Geneva talks.

Particularly, opposition Free Syrian Army’s Southern Front rejected both the talks on Syrian settlement in Astana and the upcoming Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, the front's military coordinator Abou Tawfiq Deiri told Sputnik.

"We are rejecting in our statement not only Sochi but also the Astana process," Deiri said, stressing that the front does not accept any other platforms on Syria but the one in Geneva.

At the same time, member of the opposition Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) Ahmed Asrawi told Sputnik that the group has not decided yet whether it would participate in the congress in Sochi due to the lack of information about the event.

"[The decision on the SNC’s participation has] not [been taken] yet because we have no information about what's going to happen there. There is a lot to contemplate, we want to know for what reason the congress is held, what is this congress and what the result will be," Asrawi said.

He explained that the SNC has not received information about the event yet and did not know "for the sake of what" it should attend the Congress.

"Now there are no official contacts between the SNC and Russia. We are making efforts, but we do not know whether they will happen," Asrawi added.

About 40 groups of Syria's armed opposition spoke against participation in the national dialogue congress in Sochi and stated their commitment to the demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad must go, according to a communique issued by the opposition.

Following last week’s eighth round of the Astana talks, Russia, Turkey and Iran, the guarantors of the ceasefire in Syria, stated that that the Congress would be held in Sochi on January 29-30, 2018, with a special preparatory meeting taking place on January 19-20. The Syrian National Dialogue Congress will become the third format of reconciliation negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition, along with the Geneva and Astana talks.

The congress will bring together a vast number of opposition and pro-governmental forces, as well as representatives of all ethnic and religious groups of Syria to push forward the process of the political settlement in the war-torn country and address the issues of the future Syrian constitution.

On December 23, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Sputnik that up to 1,700 people may participate in the congress. Bogdanov also said that the meeting's participants would form a constitutional commission, tasked with the reform of Syria's main law.

Erdogan Slams Assad as 'Terrorist', Damascus Reminds Him of Own 'Crimes'
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712271060350897-erdogan-assad-terrorist/

Turkey is one of the guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire, brokered also by Russia and Iran.

"Assad is definitely a terrorist who has carried out state terrorism," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a televised news conference with his Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid Essebsi in Tunis.

"It is impossible to continue with Assad. How can we embrace the future with a Syrian president who has killed close to a million of his citizens?" he said.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has responded to the accusations by saying that Erdogan is misleading the public opinion in Turkey by claiming that Assad should not remain in power, adding that Ankara's policy "causes catastrophic consequences" for both countries.

"Once again, Turkish President Erdogan continues to mislead the public opinion in Turkey. With his useless soap bubbles, he tries in vain to justify the crimes he has committed against the Syrian people by infinitely and comprehensively helping the terrorist groups in Syria," the ministry's statement read, as quoted by the SANA news agency.

Assad himself has repeatedly denied allegations of targeting civilians.

Despite Turkey being a mediator in the Syrian peace talks, which are also brokered by Russia and Iran, Assad has previously refused to consider Ankara as its partner or a guarantor state, accusing the country of supporting terrorism.

For its part, Ankara has been sending mixed signals concerning its view of Syria's political future. In November, Erdogan stated that Turkey was not ruling out future contacts with Assad, with the statement following the announcement that Ankara no longer considers Damascus a threat. However, since the civil war’s beginning in Syria in 2011, Turkey, along with many regional states, as well as the US, has been calling on Assad to step down.

This summer, Turkey set up observation points in Syria's Afrin and deployed troops there in order to support the anti-terrorist operation conducted by the Free Syrian Army, which has been the second joint campaign on the ground by the forces in the course of a year. While Ankara said that the operation was agreed at the Astana talks, Damascus accused Turkey of "aggressive actions" that violate the international law.

Russian General Staff Chief Army General Valery Gerasimov said that there was movement of militants from the US base in Syria’s At-Tanf, which is currently fully blocked by the Syrian army.

US Base in al-Tanf Fully Blocked by Syrian Troops
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712271060341967-usa-syria-base-blocked/

The US base in Syria’s al-Tanf is fully blocked by the Syrian army, Russian General Staff Chief Army General Valery Gerasimov told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper in an interview issued on Wednesday.

“In At-Tanf the area is blocked by the Syrian troops … The most important thing is that we witness movement of militants from there,” Gerasimov said.

He said that when the blockade was not so intense, some 350 militants left the area.

“There was a threat of seizure of the city Al Quaryatayn in Syria. Their forces were defeated. It is clear that the militants are being trained there. Moreover, there is a refugee camp Al-Rukban there,” Gerasimov added.

Another site, where according to Gerasimov the militants are being trained, is the Shaddadi camp in northeastern Syria.

That is a territory controlled by the Kurds and there is also a US military base there. Moreover, some 800 people more arrived at the Shaddadi camp from the east bank of the Euphrates, from the area where the Kurds carried out an offensive… In fact, that is IS [Islamic State or Daesh]," he said.

From his point of view, after the training former Daesh terrorists become members of the so-called New Syrian Army, whose task is to destabilize situation in the country. Gerasimov added that now some 750 militants remain at the Shaddadi camp and some 350 more — at the At-Tanf camp.

"It seems to me that the coalition has not set the goal to eliminate IS then [before the start of the Russian operation in Syria] and also it does not set it now," Gerasimov said.

He pointed out that the US-led coalition was carrying out from eight to 10 airstrikes every day while the Russian Aerospace Forces were carrying out 60-70 airstrikes per day.

"During the most intense periods of the operation [the Russian Aerospace Forces] carried out 120-140 airstrikes per day… Only with such methods can one break the back of the international terrorism in Syria. From eight to 10 airstrikes per day? The coalition seems to have had other goals in Syria. Their main goal was to fight against [Syrian President Bashar] Assad, not IS," Gerasimov added.

The US-led coalition has been conducting operations in Syria without either the government's consent or a UN mandate.

Coalition Declares it Won't Conduct Ops in Syrian Areas Controlled by Damascus
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712271060360930-coalition-us-assad-syria-operations/

The US-led coalition has announced that it won't conduct operations on Syrian territory controlled by the government on the western side of the Euphrates River, Operation Inherent Resolve's Deputy Commander UK Maj. Gen. Felix Gedney said during a press briefing.

"We will continue to prevent conflicts with Russians, but we don't intend to continue operations in areas controlled by Assad," Gedney said.

According to Gedney, the US-led coalition forces allegedly saw Daesh fighters moving with impunity in the government-held areas of the country.

"We are seeing the movement of a limited number of militants westwards. They seem to be moving with impunity through the regime-held territory, showing that the regime is clearly either unwilling or unable to defeat Daesh within their borders," Gedney told reporters, adding that the coalition forces had seen Daesh fighters moving around areas near the US military base at al-Tanf in Syria.

"We are taking those individuals off the battlefield," Gedney said, calling on the Syrian government to clear the areas from Daesh under its control.

Further on, Gedney expressed doubts in the effectiveness of operations conducted by the Syrian government forces east of the Euphrates river.

"We’ve clearly seen a lot of operations by the regime forces, Russian-backed Syrian forces over to the east of the Euphrates River. We question some of the effectiveness of some of these operations," Gedney said.

The announcement by the coalition comes hours after Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov said that US explanations about its base in southern Syria's Tanf are still "unintelligible" after US Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter Daesh Brett McGurk said that the coalition will maintain its presence in Syria to guarantee that the Daesh terrorists don't return to the liberated areas.

https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201712271060345621-at-tanf-syria-military-base-us-explanations-russia/

"We say that the location of the US base is contrary to common sense, especially now, when Syrian territory has been liberated from IS [Daesh] formations. There is no one left, there is no threat to you from the territory of Syria. What is there and for what purpose? The answers are still unintelligible. However, new terrorist groups may appear there," Gerasimov said.

The statement follows the US Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter Daesh Brett McGurk's announcement made earlier in December, concerning the US military presence at the At-Tanf garrison as well as in other areas of the country. According to McGurk, the coalition will maintain its presence in the country to guarantee that the Daesh terrorists don't return to the liberated areas.

The Kurds in Syria have formed a new military body named the 'Northern Syria Army' which includes the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People's Protection Units (YPG) and other groups with the aim of protecting the regions controlled by Kurds in the country.

New US-Backed Kurdish Army Formed in Northern Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961006001501

Commander of the Northern Syria Army Siaband Volat warned on Wednesday that his forces will confront any attacks against the regions controlled by Kurds.

The Northern Syria Army which is recruiting forces will protect regions in Hasaka, Koubani, Tal Abyadh, Manbij, Afrin, Raqqa and Northern Deir Ezzur, and has already recruited 100,000 forces.

Volat underlined that the US-led coalition forces will train and support the Northern Syria Army technically and will supply them with weapons.

Training of the Kurds' new military body will be carried out in al-Jazeera, Koubani, Afrin, Manbij and al-Tabaqah bases.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said mid-December that all US-backed Kurdish armed militants are “traitors” to the Syrian nation, ramping up the rhetoric particularly against the YPG, which are mainly active in Northeastern areas of the Arab country through receiving vital substantial air and armament support from Washington.

The Syria Army has given a 72-hours-long ultimatum to the Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) in Southwestern Damascus to leave the region or lay down arms and apply for government amnesty, media sources reported on Wednesday.

Syrian Army Gives 3-Day Ultimatum to Terrorists to Surrender
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961006000960

The Reuters quoted Ebrahim al-Jabawi, a commander of the Free Syrian Army, as saying that the government army has given only 72 hours to the terrorists near the borders with Israel to surrender to the government forces to be relocated to Idlib province, adding that those gunmen who do not intent to leave the region should lay down their arms and apply for amnesty.

Another source close to terrorist groups said that they have been told to surrender otherwise they will be faced the army's military operation.

Russian air defenses at the Khmemeim Air Base have engaged and destroyed two rockets fired at the key military installation by militant forces operating in northwest Syria.

Breaking: Russian air defenses destroy two incoming missiles near key airbase in Syria
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/breaking-russian-air-defenses-destroy-two-incoming-missiles-near-key-airbase-syria/

According to reports, militant forces operating in the province of Idlib fired a salvo of rockets at the Russian-operated Khmemeim Air Base in Syria’s Latakia province.

Sources go on to state that Russian Pantsir air defense systems, detecting the threat, quickly kicked into action and engaged the incoming rockets with cannon fire and radar-guided guided missiles.

Two of the rockets fired by militant forces were successfully intercepted near the airbase whilst at least one missile, falling wide of the military installation, hit just outside the town of Jableh (also in Latakia province).

At the present time, Russian air force helicopters are patrolling the area where the militant rockets were fired from which preliminary reports say to be the town of Bidama in Idlib province.

In retribution to the grad missile attack perpetrated by jihadist forces on Jableh and Hmeimim Airbase, the Russian Air Force began a powerful aerial campaign concentrated on militant bases and mobilization points around Bidama and Al-Najiyah villages.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/russians-pound-jihadist-jisr-al-shughour-stronghold-response-rocket-attack-hmeimim/

The aforementioned towns located in Jisr al-Shughour’s western countryside are the locations from which the missile attacks were instigated. Fortunately for the Russians, the air defense systems set in place were able to neutralize the threat.

So far, over 10 airstrikes were reported in the area with more strikes planned for the jihadist stronghold infamous for the massive presence of foreign fighters from Chechnya and China. The Turkistani Islamist Party takes Jisr al-Shughour as its primary operations stronghold in the Syrian country.

Nevertheless, the rocket attack is a dangerous precedent the Russian will not allow to go by unnoticed and ignored.

UP AND RUNNING: The Full-Cover Anti-Missile Shield Has Been Put Into Operation in Russia (1:23 min)

Mutual destruction seems to be a day of the past. Luckily Putin's Russia beat them to it, if it were any other way around. The US might have Nuked and totally destroyed Russia already.

I don't believe the Russians are bluffing when they say that they can intercept missiles. The following video's below are rather impressive and do exactly that.

I've only so far found video's of Russian military tech being capable of intercepting missiles.

Bit weird since for example, the US and their Israeli Iron Dome system (patriot system) claims to be capable of performing the same feat. Though, in reality it has yet to be caught on tape. Missiles have been caught on tape exploding, but never of any clear interception. Apparently, a real interception looks like 2 missiles colliding against each other. Who would have known. We can thank the Russians for that logic and video's, since Israel claims that Palestinians missiles and rockets are invisible for the naked eye to spot whenever they are confronted by it. Which is complete lie of course. They just rather set up an expensive fireworks show to give the impression that they are under attack for the world to watch.

I don't see that your Post is "off topic" ... actually, it factually points out that "Russia has a far superior Military program and advance technology" than the U.S. If anyone is bluffing on "Full-Cover Anti-Missile Shield's" - it might be Israel?

Russian Armed Forces Air Defense Troops commander Alexander Leonov announced that US Air Force aircraft in Eastern Syria were multiple times detected and automatically followed.

Russian Missile System Tracked US Fighter Jets in East Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961007000312

"As part of its military operations, US Air Force strategic reconnaissance planes and bombers were multiple times detected and automatically followed," Lt. Gen. Leonov told Russia’s Izvestiya newspaper in a piece published Thursday.

The general said the surface-to-air system was deployed to Syria in October 2016 year to "expand control over the eastern Syrian airspace, prevent enemy airstrikes at the Hmeymim airfield and the Tartus logistics base."

He added that US warplanes operating in Eastern Syria were multiple times in crosshairs of a Russian S-300V4 air defense system.

He stressed that US planes reacted "nervously" to being tracked by Russia’s air defense unit from the distance of 200 to 300 kilometers (124 to 186 miles).

The system and its personnel were withdrawn to their permanent deployment site in June this year.

The Russian defense ministry revealed on Thursday that the Syrian army's fighter jet was shot down by al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) militants in Hama province, using an American missile.

Russia: Syrian Fighter Jet Targeted by Al-Nusra's US-Made Missile
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961007000964

The Arabic-language al-Hadath news website quoted Alexander Ivanov, the spokesman of Russia's airbase at Humeimim, as saying that al-Nusra has used a US-made missile to bring down the Syrian fighter jet on Tuesday.

The al-Nusra's possession of US-made weapons indicates that Washington is supplying the terrorist group with different aid with the aim of preventing reestablishment of stability in Syria, he added.

A Syrian military jet was shot down by militants in Hama province, the Syrian state broadcaster confirmed, adding that a pilot was killed in the attack.

“The military aircraft crashed in the vicinity of Hama after it was shot down by terrorists; the pilot was killed,” the Syrian state-run SANA news agency quoted a source as saying. The plane, identified as a L-39 Albatros jet trainer, was shot down by terrorists' anti-aircraft machineguns, a source within the Syrian opposition told Al-Masdar news.

The Grad missiles fired by the Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) were blown up by the air defense systems deployed in the Russians' airbase in Humeimim.

Lattakia: Al-Nusra Front's Grad Missiles Destroyed by Russian Air Defense System in Air
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961007000704

The Arabic-language Moraseloun news website reported on Wednesday that the Russian forces stationed in Humeimim airbase intercepted the Grad missiles, using the Pantsir defense shield. The missiles were fired against the villages near Jabalah region in Lattakia province.

The missiles were fired by the terrorists from Badama region in Southwestern Idlib and were destroyed over Jabalah airspace.

The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria announced earlier this month that the country's forces deployed in Humeimim Airbase in Lattakia province will take part in military operations against the Al-Nusra Front in Idlib province.

"Our international partners are committed to root out the Al-Nusra terrorist organization, in the meantime, the Russia Air Force is committed to take part in the campaign against the Al-Nusra with its forces in Humeimim airbase," The Russian Center said.

The center said that Washington is insisting on regime change in Syria, adding, "The US officials' recent remarks over their intention to remain in Syria have increased our worries."

An underground base of the terrorists was destroyed during the Russian fighter jets' airstrikes in Northern Hama, field sources said on Thursday, adding that a group of al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) members were killed after their offensive was repelled by army forces.

Northern Hama: Terrorists' Underground Base Blown Up in Airstrike, Al-Nusra Militants Killed in Failed Attack
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961007000583

The sources confirmed that the Russian fighters pounded the terrorists' positions in al-Latamineh city in Northern Hama, blowing up one of their underground bases and killing all the militants inside.

Al-Latamineh is one of largest strongholds of the terrorists in Northern Hama which is full of tunnels and underground hideouts used by militants to store weapons and ammunition.

Meantime, the Syrian army units engaged in clashes with a group of al-Nusra terrorists who wanted to enter one of the army's Northern bases from al-Baneh in Northern Hama.

The Syrian army troops killed all members of the group, including one of their commanders, namely Dibu Abdolrahman Othman al-Anbari, destroying their weapons and ammunition during the clashes.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday that he expected to see a larger US civilian presence in Syria, including contractors and diplomats, as the fight against Islamic State militants nears its end and the focus turns toward rebuilding and ensuring the militants do not return.

Mattis sees larger US civilian presence in Syria Friday December 29, 2017
https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20171229-mattis-sees-larger-us-civilian-presence-in-syria/

The United States has about 2,000 troops in Syria fighting Islamic State. Mattis’ comments are likely to anger Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has previously called US troops “illegal invader” forces.

“What we will be doing is shifting from what I would call an offensive, shifting from an offensive terrain-seizing approach to a stabilizing… you’ll see more US diplomats on the ground,” Mattis said.

He has previously stated that US forces will stay in Syria as long as Islamic State fighters want to fight and prevent the return of an “ISIS 2.0.”

This is the first time he has said that there would be an increase of diplomats in the parts of the country retaken from Islamic State militants.

“Well when you bring in more diplomats, they are working that initial restoration of services, they bring in the contractors, that sort of thing,” Mattis said.

“There is international money that has got to be administered, so it actually does something, it doesn’t go into the wrong people’s pockets,” he added.

The contractors and diplomats would also be looking at training local forces to clear improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and holding territory to help ensure that Islamic State does not retake territory.

“It is an attempt to move towards the normalcy and that takes a lot of support,” said Mattis. It was not clear how many US diplomats would serve in Syria and when. The United States has suspended diplomatic relations with Syria due to the civil war.

Assad’s forces, helped by Russian air power and Iran-backed militias, have managed to reestablish control over most of Syria over the past two years.

The US-led coalition battling Islamic State in Syria has repeatedly said it does not seek to fight Assad’s forces, though Washington wants the president to step down.

When asked whether Syrian government forces could move to disrupt the US plans, Mattis said: “That would probably be a mistake.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the US forces must leave Syrian territory completely.

Russian FM: US Forces Must Leave Syrian Territory Completely
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961007001254

Speaking to Interfax news agency on Thursday, Lavrov added that the UN Security Council has not approved the work of the United States and the coalition it leads in Syria, nor has been invited by the Syrian legitimate government, emphasizing that they (Russian side) are Judging from the fact that the Americans should leave the Syrian territory once the remnants of the terrorists are completely destroyed and that will happen very soon.

On the statement of the US Defense Secretary, James Matisse, about the intention of US troops to stay in Syria until achieving progress in the political settlement, Lavrov pointed out that such statement is “surprising” because it means that Washington reserves the right to determine the progress and wants to keep control over part of Syrian territory to achieve the result it wants.

The Russian Minister affirmed that according to the UNSC No.2254, which the United States supported, the decision on the future of Syria can only be taken by the Syrian people and this is what Moscow will start with in its contacts with the Americans later.

He also expressed his satisfaction that cooperation with the US in Syria is possible if the Americans’ goal is to fight terrorism.

Syrian media sources revealed on Thursday that the British government has dropped its so-called ban on financial support for the Free Police in areas controlled by al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) in Northern Syria.

Britain Resumes Financial Support for Terrorists in Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13961007001056

Aleppo “Free” police chief, Brigadier Adib Shalaf, was quoted as saying by Syria's al-Watan newspaper that Britain has resumed its financial aid "but not through official channels".

The British Foreign Office said earlier this month that it had stopped financing the Justice and Community Security project known as Ajax, which provides support for the Syrian Free Police, which is deployed in a number of Syrian areas.

The British decision came against the backdrop of information published by the British network “BBC” which accused the free police to deal with the militant factions, in addition to accusing it of human rights violations, and financial corruption.

“The Free police have been getting support from Adam Smith International since early 2014, and Britain is not the only one to support,” Schlaff said. “There are other countries supporting the project, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany and Denmark.”

The Free Police in Idlib, Aleppo, Western and Southern Aleppo, and the northern suburbs of Aleppo have 3,300 police and officers, most of them dissident police who have been trained in Turkey and cooperate with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) terrorist group.
