Syria plunges into dark as nationwide blackout strikes
http://presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/03/453574/Syria-Daesh/

Syria has plunged into dark as the country’s electricity network is down for unknown reasons, state media reports say.

“The electricity network has been cut in all governorates,” official news agency SANA said on Thursday, quoting a source in the Ministry for Electricity.

The television report added that “attempts to find out the cause of the outage” had started.

According to residents in the capital, Damascus, they have been without power since 1:00 p.m. local time (1100 GMT).

According to Syria’s state mobile provider, its Internet service had been “partially cut due to part of the network unexpectedly malfunctioning.”

Later reports by SANA quoted the Syrian electricity minister as saying that the electricity supply was gradually returning in different parts of the country, while power is expected to be restored by midnight.

Syria has been hit by a number of partial power cuts since the foreign-backed militancy began in the country in 2011, with some of the blackouts being blamed on Takfiri terrorists targeting electricity networks around.

The complete power blackout on Thursday is seen as a rare occurrence.

This comes six days after a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and the United States took effect.

Israel Accuses Syrian Government of Using Chemical Weapons During Truce
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160302/1035621281/israel-acuses-syria-chemical-weapons.html#ixzz41rCatvVe

Israeli Defense Minister claimed the Syrian governmental forces had used chemical weapons against civilians during the ongoing ceasefire.

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon accused Tuesday the Syrian governmental forces of using chemical weapons against civilians during the current ceasefire, reached at the initiative of Russia and the United States.

"The Syrians initially used industrially produced chemical weapons, but lately they have started to use such substances as chlorine and they use it against civilians. They continue doing it now, during the allegedly holding ceasefire. The are mainly dropping barrels of chlorine from the air," Yaalon said in a speech to a conference near Tel Aviv.

US House panel wants to try Assad, Russia, Iran for ‘war crimes’ in Syria
https://www.rt.com/usa/334398-syria-war-crimes-panel/

The US House Foreign Affairs Committee has passed a resolution accusing the Syrian government, Russia and Iran of war crimes and calling for an international tribunal on Syria. The move comes amid a breakthrough US-Russia deal on a Syrian ceasefire.

The document passed on Wednesday claims that the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad is guilty of “widespread torture and rape,” and its forces “massacred civilians, including through the use of chemical weapons, cluster munitions, and barrel bombs.”

Moscow is accused of “violations of international law by leading deliberate bombing campaigns on civilian targets including bakeries, hospitals, markets and schools."

The resolution introduced by Republican Chris Smith (R-NJ), and co-sponsored by other two senators, reads that “vast majority of the civilians who have died in the Syrian conflict have been killed by the Government of Syria and its allies, specifically the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Iran’s terrorist proxies including Hezbollah.”

Committee Chairman Ed Royce supported the bill, saying that Russian air strikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) are ineffective, claiming that “Russian attacks have actually done more to help ISIS than hurt it.” He added, without giving any evidence to prove the claim, that Russian forces hit “moderate opposition” targets.

Russia says has right to respond to US bans
http://presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/03/453640/Russia-US-Moscow-Washington-Ukraine/

Russia has blasted the US for extending sanctions against Moscow over its alleged role in the Ukraine crisis, saying the Kremlin is entitled to respond.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry described the US bans as futile, noting that prolonging the embargoes undermines the possibility of Moscow-Washington cooperation on key international issues.

“It’s time for Washington to realize that its sanctions policies have no prospects and that the entire course of confrontation with Russia is dangerous. We, for our part, reserve the right to take measures that we believe are in line with Russian interests in response,” the statement read.

It is disappointing that the US continues to “enthusiastically play sanctions against Russia” while the policy is not helping settle the conflict in eastern Ukraine and has a “destructive effect” on Moscow-Washington ties, it added.

“A lot of things in global affairs depend on the atmosphere of dialogue between our countries. … the US should take into account the fact that by doing so (extending sanctions) they sabotage the possibilities of interaction on key international issues, which they regularly ask us to help resolve,” according to the statement.

On Wednesday, the White House announced that anti-Russia measures, which were imposed in 2014, would be extended. The bans target senior Russian officials, pro-Russian figures in Ukraine and some Russian companies and banks.

Obama extends anti-Russia sanctions for another year
http://presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/03/453603/Russia-US-Sanctions-Obama-Putin-Ukraine/

US President Barack Obama has signed a new Executive Order that extends economic sanctions against Russia for another year.

The decree, published Wednesday on the official White House website, states that economic and financial sanctions imposed on Moscow over its involvement in the Ukrainian crisis will stay in place until March 6, 2017.

The decision came as “Russia's actions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” Obama said in the document.

A wave of resignations sweeps the Polish high command
https://southfront.org/a-wave-of-resignations-sweeps-the-polish-military/

A wave of resignation has swept Armed Forces General Command (DGRSZ), which is the Polish military’s key command apparatus. Nearly all of its most important officers have tendered resignations in the last few days. Out of 23 generals assigned to the DGRSZ, five have resigned, including three two-star generals.

The list of resignations is not being published. One of the generals who is unofficially mentioned as having resigned is Division General Janusz Bronowicz, Land Forces’ General Inspector who is in charge over the most important component of the Polish military.

General Bronowicz climbed nearly every rung of the career ladder. He was a successful commander of Poland’s 6th rotation to Afghanistan. He was also involved in planning the largest Polish military exercise since the end of the Warsaw Pact. The Anakonda 2016 exercise is to include 25 thousand soldiers, including 12 thousand from Poland.

This information is all the more concerning since Bronowicz’s resignation was accompanied by the resignations of both of his deputies, Generals Andrzej Andrzej Kuśnierek and Stanisław Olszański. The Naval Inspectorate has also lost its chief. According to unconfirmed reports, Vice-Admiral Marian Ambroziak has decided to hang up his uniform.

As if that was not enough, the DGRSZ is also losing its chief of staff. On February 29, Division General Ireneusz Bartniak has offered his resignation. General Bartniak is so far the only officer to have officially confirmed his resignation. In his letter to Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz, he asked for reducing the 6-month resignation notice for “personal reasons. Bartniak and his colleagues did not want to comment on their resignations.

Whoever is nominated in his place will lack his experience. Bartniak served on the 9th Iraq rotation where he was heavily engaged in combating Iraqi insurgency which nearly completely took over the city of Diwaniya. Bartniak has served for 35 years and is leaving at the age of 55, still at the peak of his abilities. Like the other officers.

The Polish military has not experienced such a wave of resignations in the last few decades. Even though they are voluntary, the officers unofficially blame the atmosphere in the military following Antoni Macierewicz’s assumption of the post of Minister of Defense. –As an officer, I can only express my opinion by leaving, one of the departing generals has stated.

The wave of resignations is not only bad news for Polish soldiers. In a few weeks, the first US units will arrive in Poland to take part in the Anakonda 2016 exercise (scheduled for June 7-17). The US decided to send a record number of 10 thousand soldiers to Poland. Addition 3 thousand will be contributed by other NATO countries. These exercises are supposed to serve as a great demonstration of NATO’s unity and power prior to the July NATO summit in Europe.

The decimation of the command system right before such an important event is fatal news which will no doubt be noticed, and not only by Poland’s allies. The US has already requested the Ministry of Defense to explain how this news is to be interpreted, and whether it will influence the exercises and further military cooperation. The Ministry so far has not issued a response.

US diplomats hand over to Russia 28 historical documents stolen from archives
http://tass.ru/en/society/860460

The documents were discovered during the investigations conducted in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco from 2006 to 2012.

Diplomats of the US Embassy in Moscow have handed over to Russia’s representatives on Thursday 28 historical documents stolen from the Russian archives in the 1980s-2000s. Taking part in a ceremony at Spaso House, the residence of the US ambassador in Moscow, were Ambassador John Tefft, officials of the US National Security Agency, the Russian Ministry of Culture, historians and archival experts.

Among the returned documents are imperial decrees dating back to 1703-1894, including those issued by Empresses Anna and Elizabeth, Emperor Paul I and imperial decrees to the Chapter of Imperial Orders from 1797 to 1917. The American side also passed over to Russia 17 drawings from the private collection of Soviet painter, architect and theoretician of the first half of the 20th century Yakov Chernikhov. The documents also include Order No.23 issued by Soviet People’s Defense Commissar Joseph Stalin on March 14, 1944, "On Transforming the 1st Aviation Regiment of the Civil Air Fleet into the 120th Guards Aviation Regiment of the Civil Air Fleet."

The documents were discovered during the investigations conducted in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco from 2006 to 2012 and were put up for sale by auction houses, art galleries and private collectors.

Events to transfer cultural valuables returned by the United States are held every 1-2 years. The last such ceremony took place on June 13, 2013.

Parties to Syrian conflict sign 44 ceasefire agreements — Russian Defense Ministry
http://tass.ru/en/world/860503

Russia’s Defense Ministry has registered 14 cases of the shelling of residential districts and the Syrian government troops’ positions over 24 hours.

"At the moment, talks are underway with the leaders of five armed groups in Damascus, Daraa and Homs provinces," the newsletter said.

The document also notes that 18 commanders of the moderate opposition units in Daraa province have declared their intention to stop fighting over the past 24 hours. As a result of this, the ceasefire has been extended to nine blocs of the city of the same name.

According to the center, the reconciliation agreements with the elders of Marzaf village (Hama province) have been signed with Russia’s mediation. More than 600 local residents, representatives of the Muslim clergy, Syrian and foreign journalists attended the ceremony, the newsletter said.

"Also, the leaders of the Jaysh al-Islam group which controls Ruheiba village (Damascus province) decided to join the cessation of hostilities process yesterday," it added.

Reconciliation center in Syria holds relief aid deliver talks with 12 organizations

According to the statement, the staff of the Russian center for the reconciliation of warring parties in Syria has held talks with twelve international organizations regarding the delivery of relief aid.

"There have been telephone conversations with twelve international organizations operating in Syria," the ministry said.

"Over the past 24 hours the Russian center for the reconciliation of warring factions in Syria brought more than four tonnes of relief aid to the villages of Marzaf and Akebra, Hama province. Foods and bottled water were handed over to local civilians," the center said in a news release.

Also, the center’s specialists have had a meeting with officials from Syria’s Ministry of Reconciliation to discuss "common approaches to the delivery of humanitarian aid to the population in need," the Defense Ministry added.

Truce has been effective in Syria since February 27. It does not apply to the groups Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (both outlawed in Russia), and also to other groups declared as terrorist by the UN Security Council.

The Russian Defense Ministry declared the establishment of the reconciliation center on February 23. It is headquartered at the Hmeimim air base, Latakia province. Earlier reports said a similar US center was created in Amman, Jordan.

Run, Daesh, Run! Syrian Army Retakes Strategic Mountain, Oilfields in Homs

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160304/1035762470/syria-army-advance.html

The Syrian army and allied popular units seized back a strategic mountain and a number of oilfields from Daesh terrorists in the country’s central Homs province, Iran’s Fars news agency reported.

After securing the entire mountaintop of Jabal Jazal and the surrounding oil fields, the government troops, acting in close coordination with the National Defense Forces, advanced south towards the city of Palmyra, seizing a part of the valley from Daesh militants, Fars News wrote.

In South of Palmyra, the Syrian armed forces advanced to Wadi Al-Dhakara, seizing a part of the valley after a violent battle with the Daesh terrorists entrenched around its hilltops.

Earlier this week, the Syrian army and its popular allies inflicted heavy losses on the terrorists in Homs province regaining full control over a part of oil-rich regions in the eastern part of the province.

Also on Wednesday, Daesh strongholds in the south came under a series of airstrikes on the terrorists’ concentration centers that left many militants dead and wounded and destroyed much of their military hardware.

EXCLUSIVE: Turkey ‘protects & supplies’ Al-Nusra camps at its border – Syria’s YPG to RT

https://www.rt.com/news/334483-turkey-nusra-ypg-exclusive/

Jabhat Al-Nusra terrorists have pitched their camps right next to the border and receive regular supplies from the Turkish side, Syrian Kurdish forces told RT’s Lizzie Phelan, who traveled with YPG to investigate suspicious activity there.

An RT crew has filmed a number of vehicles coming through the Bab al-Salam crossing on the Turkish-Syrian border, on the outskirts of the northern town of Azaz, which is partially controlled by Al-Nusra, according to reports.

“We can actually see here the important border town of Azaz, that Turkey is determined to prevent YPG from taking. Just a little beyond that you can see the Bab al-Salam border crossing and a heavy flow of vehicles coming from Turkey into Azaz,” the RT correspondent said, reporting from the Turkey-Syria border, an area that TV crews rarely gain access to.

“When we zoom in we can see Turkish military vehicles, probably around a kilometer away, maybe less. And just in front here's another small village that YPG say Al-Nusra uses for training,” Phelan said.

“Beyond that we can see the Turkish flag flying, that’s on the Turkish side of the border, and through there the YPG says they monitor a regular supply of weapons coming from Turkey to that Al-Nusra camp.”

According to the Kurds, after the terror group was excluded from the ceasefire, Al-Nusra have taken down most of their flags, which would give their location away and invite airstrikes. However, the RT crew still managed to film some flags flying above their positions.

YPG are unequivocal about Turkey’s sponsorship of terrorist groups in Syria.

Head of the YPG in Afrin, Abdu Khalil, says Turkey is definitely providing support for terrorist groups in the area.

“Turkey wanted to make a coalition against terrorism, but any country which would be in a coalition against terrorism should not open its border to Al-Nusra Front,” he said.

“When there is a Kurdish prisoner, when he is in Turkish hands, they deliver him to Al-Nusra Front, whereas a wounded man from Islamic State who is in a Turkish hospital: he gets immunity and guards. No one can even look at him. What more evidence do you want than that?”

Ankara dismisses this accusation, saying its direct strikes against the YPG are justified due to its links with the Turkish-based militant group the PKK, which Turkey has recently resumed its war against at home.

The rebel fighters on the ground say they are certain Turkey is providing assistance to IS, Al-Qaeda and Al Nusra.

“The reason Turkey is on the ground is to support groups like Al-Qaeda. Support for ISIS is coming from Turkey. They are shelling because it wants to occupy our land, not to help our people. Turkey dismissed many of the armed groups, and supported Al Nusra against us,” Abu Jouma Benawii, a founder of Jaish al Thuwar (Army of Revolutionaries), told RT.

“Our fronts against the regime have stopped, but our fronts against ISIS are going on and against Al Nusra as well. We are committed to the ceasefire, one million percent,” he added.

Asked if he would have changed his mind about joining the uprising, Abu Jouma Benawii said in hindsight: "Really I would have changed my mind, because everybody contributed to destroying Syria, at the beginning and the end it is only the people who lose."

“Had we known that Syria’s friends would be like this, we wouldn’t have been with them. All our people were forced to flee," he added.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently said Turkey has the right to carry out military operations not only in Syria, but in any other country hosting terror groups that threaten the Turkish state. He alleged that Ankara’s stance has “absolutely nothing to do with the sovereignty rights of the states that can’t take control of their territorial integrity.”

“On the contrary, this has to do with the will Turkey shows to protect its sovereignty rights,” Erdogan added.

Turkish forces have been shelling YPG, which Ankara considers a terrorist organization, as well as government army positions in Syria, since mid-February. The bombings of YPG targets, the military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), have been underway despite the US, Ankara's ally, viewing the Kurdish fighters as a vital partner in fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

There were reports of dozens of Turkish military vehicles crossing into Kurdish northern Syria, with servicemen digging trenches in the area. Turkey’s “provocative” military buildup on the border and shelling of the Syrian territory could thwart the fragile truce and disrupt the peace process in the Arab Republic, the head of the Russian ceasefire monitoring center Lt. Gen. Sergey Kuralenko said this week.

The ceasefire in Syria, which came into force on February 27, brokered by leading world powers, including the US and Russia, is designed to pave the way to reconciliation between the Syrian government and moderate rebel forces. They would together agree on a peaceful transition in the country. Some of the forces in Syria, including IS and Al-Nusra, are not subject to the ceasefire.

Russian aircraft continue to carry out airstrikes against Al-Nusra front militants to “stabilize the situation” in the regions north of the city of Aleppo, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

There have been at least 31 violations of the Syrian ceasefire over the past three days, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday, adding that during the same period the number of local ceasefire agreements between various factions had increased to 38.

Inside ISIS's secret underground tunnels: Jihadi group created network of escape routes to evade coalition airstrikes in Iraq

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3476176/Inside-ISIS-s-secret-underground-tunnels-Jihadi-group-created-network-escape-routes-evade-coalition-airstrikes-Iraq.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

- Network of underground tunnels discovered after re-capture of Sinjar
- Some of the tunnels are thought to be 30 feet deep and just three feet wide
- Secret chambers allowed jihadis to freely move underground and evade coalition airstrikes

A deep network of underground tunnels have been uncovered in Iraq, revealing how ISIS have been carefully maintaining escape routes for its fighters as they try to avoid coalition airstrikes.

The tunnels were discovered by Kurdish forces when the Peshmerga managed to re-take the Yazidi majority town of Sinjar last December.

Burrowing deep into the ground, some of the chambers are thought to be 30 feet deep, allowing ISIS fighters to hide out and move freely out of the way of airstrikes.

Although 70 tunnels have been uncovered, Kurdish and Iraqi forces remain concerned that more secret layers may have been constructed in other parts of the town.

'There is a tunnel under every alley, street and public building that remains intact,' Wais Faiq, head of Sinjar town council told the International Business Times.

Mr Faiq said that ISIS had 'dug so many to the extent that they completely destroyed the infrastructure of Sinjar.'

The tunnels remain in a precarious state with concerns remaining that parts of the labyrinth of corridors may have been rigged with explosives.

The discovery was made more surprising when soldiers investigating the tunnels found that ISIS had even wired the chambers with electricity.

The news comes as the US-led coalition carried out further airstrikes against ISIS forces in both Iraq and Syria.

United States and its allies staged 21 strikes on Tuesday against ISIS, the coalition leading the operations confirmed in a statement.

Fourteen strikes in Iraq concentrated on the jihadi-held cities of Mosul and Fallujah.

The coalition claimed to have hit two tactical units, an improvised explosive device facility and three vehicles used by the militant group, among other targets.

Other strikes were conducted near Ramadi, Sinjar, Al Qaim, Albu Hayat, Bayji and Habbaniya, the statement said.

In Syria, seven strikes near four cities - Al Hawl, Ar Raqqa, Manbij and Mar'a - hit numerous targets, including an ISIS headquarters, five tactical units and two buildings.

Russian MoD Accuses Turkey of Ongoing Hostilities in Syria's Aleppo, Idlib

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160304/1035791042/turkey-syria-aleppo-idlib.html

Ankara is fully responsible for ongoing hostilities in Syria's Aleppo and Idlib provinces as Turkey ensures steady supply of weapons to terrorists and keeps shelling groups of Kurdish militia fighting against al-Nusra Front, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

HMEIMYM (Sputnik) — Last week, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on the ceasefire in Syria. The cessation of hostilities took effect at midnight on Saturday, Damascus time, generally holding across the country despite reported minor violations.

"Truck convoys with materiel and weaponry cross the border from Turkey to Syria round the clock. They are headed exclusively to areas controlled by al-Nusra Front and Ahrar ash-Sham terrorist groups," Lt. Gen. Kuralenko, commander of the Hmeymim-based Russian center for Syrian reconciliation, told reporters.

Earlier, the Russian center on Syrian reconciliation said that it was receiving reports from the Syrian General Staff and Kurdish armed groups supporting the ceasefire, that complain of continuing artillery shelling from Turkey.

"Artillery shelling of Kurdish militia units, fighting against Nusra Front, continues from the territory of a Turkish border post near Yanankey," Kuralenko said, adding that these actions hinder the restoration of peace and reconciliation in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

On February 13, Turkish artillery began shelling positions held by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish group with links to the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), in Syria's Aleppo Province.

On February 25, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the truce in Syria is not obligatory for Turkey to follow if the country feels a threat against its security.

The Russian center on Syrian reconciliation registered 27 violations of the ceasefire regime in Syria in the last 24 hours, with most of them having taken place in Aleppo, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

"In the past 24 hours, 27 violations of the ceasefire regime were registered (Idlib — 7, Damascus and Homs — 4 in each, Daraa — 3, Latakia —1). As before, the greatest number of violations happened in Aleppo — 8 cases, " the ministry said in a press release.

Russia receives evidence mercenaries are trained in Mideast countries for war in Syria

The report points to an upsurge in calls in the social networks for continuing combat operations against government troops

MOSCOW, March 4. /TASS/. The Russian center for reconciliation between warring factions in Syria is getting evidence mercenaries for further hostilities in that country are trained in the territory of a number of Middle East states, the center said in a news release published on the Defense Ministry’s website.

"The center for the reconciliation of warring factions in Syria is receiving information that mercenaries are being trained in the territory of a number of states in the Middle East for war in Syria and that weapons for militants are delivered," the news release says.

The report points to an upsurge in calls in the social networks for continuing combat operations against government troops.

Nevertheless, Syrians continue to brief the Russian center on terrorists’ operations. Over the past day the residents of Fuaa, Idlib province, used the "hot line" resources seven times to notify the reconciliation center of heavy artillery bombardments against the town of Binnish, still being held by Jabhat al-Nusra (outlawed in Russia). The attacks caused civilian casualties.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had a joint teleconference on March 4, the Kremlin press service has said.

"The Russian-U.S. agreements supported by the UN Security Council were lauded. The general compliance with the truce regime and the first positive results, which, most importantly, created prerequisites for launching the political process in Syria through the organization of intra-Syrian dialogue under the UN aegis, were welcomed," the report said.

"The leaders supported the roadmap for the settlement process coordinated in the International Syria Support Group and approved by UN Security Council resolution 2254," the Kremlin said. "The Russian side noted that the decision of the Syrian authorities to hold parliamentary elections in April of this year was being implemented in accordance with the existent constitution of the Syrian Arab Republic and did not hinder steps promoting the peace process," the report said.

"Readiness to bolster joint efforts on resolving the pressing humanitarian problems was expressed. The need for strict compliance with the truce terms by all parties to the Syrian conflict and the topicality of the further fight against ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations was underlined," the press service said.

Moscow grateful to U.S. for return of stolen archive documents
http://rbth.com/news/2016/03/04/moscow-grateful-to-us-for-return-of-stolen-archive-documents_573251

The Russian Foreign Ministry hails the return from the U.S. of the documents that disappeared from Russian archives, back in 1990s, and hopes that this experience in Russia-U.S. cooperation will be in demand in other areas too.

"We are grateful to the American side for the cooperation in the discovery and repatriation to Russia of 28 unique documents which were stolen from the archives in our country in 1990s, and illegally taken to the U.S. Among the files returned on March 3, there are several original copies of the decrees issued by eight Russian emperors, as well as other relics," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in its commentary published on its website on Friday.

Jeish Al-Islam Disagrees with Ceasefire in Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13941214000735

Syria's Jeish Al-Islam (Army of Islam) militant group in a statement on Friday voiced its opposition to a ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia in Syria.

"We will not agree with the ceasefire and we will not remain committed to it," the Jeish al-Islam said in its statement.

The militant group further said that the Syrian army is mobilizing its forces to take control of the ISIL-controlled areas.

Syria has been mired in war since 2011, with terrorist and extremist groups fighting the Syrian Army.

Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria on February 22. The accord took effect on Saturday, generally holding across the country despite reported minor violations. The truce was backed by the UN Security Council, which adopted a resolution on Friday shortly before the ceasefire came into force.

The Syrian government has confirmed its halt to its military actions in accordance with the Russia-US agreement. Some opposition forces have been skeptical about the ceasefire, but in general have agreed to adhere to it.

The cessation of hostilities does not apply to designated terrorist organizations operating in Syria, including ISIL (Daesh) and al-Nusra Front, a group affiliated with al-Qaeda, and Jeish Al-Islam. Both groups are banned in Russia.

Ministry of Defence Reaches Agreement on the Cessation of Fighting With Jaish Al-Islam
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/03/ministry-of-defence-reaches-agreement.html

A field Commander from the militant group "Jaish al-Islam" has signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities, said the head of the Russian Center for reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria, Sergey Kuralenko, reports RIA "Novosti".

"Over the past two days, in the framework of the events organised by the Russian Centre for reconciliation, an agreement on the cessation of hostilities was signed with a field Commander from the group "Jaish al-Islam", which controls the settlement Ruhhaybah (Damascus)", he said.

Kuralenko also reported reaching an agreement on the cessation of fighting with the five commanders of the moderate opposition, which are in the province of Daraa, and also with the elders of two towns in Hama.

Earlier it was reported that one of the largest militant groups in Syria said that the war will continue.

ISIL Terrorists Ask Commanders to Dispatch Fresh Forces to Raqqa
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13941214000610

Recent victories of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) have forced the ISIL terrorists to call on their commanders for reinforcement troops in the Northern part of Raqqa near the border with Turkey, sources said Friday.

"The ISIL militants, who have been defeated by the Kurdish fighters in several battles in the recent week, have not been able to regroup and have begged for fresh forces from the other provinces to deploy them in the Northern part of Raqqa near the small town of Sulouk," the sources said.

Reports said on Thursday that the Syrian army forces blocked the ISIL terrorists' entry into Syria from Turkey by killing 76 of them.

The Kurdish YPG killed the terrorists when they were attempting to cross the Turkish border towards Tal Abyadh in Raqqa province in Northern Syria.

The YPG Kurds have recently bonded with the Damascus government. The Syrian army sent several arms cargoes to the YPG troops in the Northeastern province of Hasaka and trained the first group of Kurdish volunteer forces in the provincial capital city of Hasaka last month.

The SDF that is comprised of mainly Kurdish fighters as well as a few hundred Syrian Arab dissident forces have received trainings from the US and have been provided with scanty US-coalition air support in their battles in Raqqa province in Northeastern Syria; but in Northern and Northwestern battlefronts, they have been operating alongside the YPG and received the Russian air backup in their Aleppo wars that started with the conquest of Tishrin Dam on the Euphrates early in February.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/dead-including-gunman-standoff-washington-state-37232837

BELFAIR, Wash. — Feb 26, 2016 - A gunman who killed four people in rural Washington state called an officer he previously encountered to say he shot his family, leading to an hourslong standoff at a home Friday that ended with his suicide, authorities said.

A 12-year-old girl related to the victims survived and was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, Mason County sheriff's Chief Deputy Ryan Spurling said. Her condition was not immediately known.

"Apparently she's OK," Spurling said. "I don't know if this is a daughter, or step-daughter, or what the relationship is, but she escaped from the house."

The officer who took the shooter's call went to the home across Puget Sound from Seattle with another deputy. Authorities negotiated with the man for about three hours before a SWAT team entered the house in a heavily wooded area and found the bodies.

The gunman "apparently came outside the home and shot himself," Sheriff Casey Salisbury said. "It's a terrible tragedy."

Neither the gunman nor his four victims have been identified. Authorities did not detail the previous interaction between the shooter and the officer he called.

Jack Pigott, who lives down the road, said he heard gunshots Thursday night but none Friday.

The couple who lived in the house about 25 miles southwest of Seattle had been married for four or five years, Pigott said. The wife had two teenage sons who were adopted from Russia during a previous marriage. She also had a daughter who was adopted from China.

Pigott said the husband had a heating and air conditioning contractor business. He had recently been hospitalized, Pigott said, but he didn't know why. When he returned home, he was on a lot of medications, Pigott said of the man.

ISIS Lines Collapsing as Syrian Army Closes in on Palmyra, Raqqa
http://russia-insider.com/en/isis-lines-collapsing-syrian-army-closes-raqqa/ri13187

With the fragile ceasefire largely holding, the Syrian army and its allies have driven eastward into ISIS-held territory. And they've made significant gains in the last week:

On Friday morning in the southeastern countryside of the Homs Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army’s 120th Brigade of the 2nd Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Liwaa Suqour Al-Sham (Desert Hawks Brigade), and Dara’ Qalamoun (Qalamoun Shield) – continued their advance towards the strategic city of Quraytayn, striking the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) positions at the important hilltop of Tal Quraytayn.

ISIS is now facing attacks on at least 3 fronts: (Map)

In the southeast, the Syrian army is also closing in on the ancient city of Palmyra:

While the Russian were busy hitting ISIS positions in eastern Homs, the Syrian Arab Army’s 67th Brigade of the 18th Tank Division was zeroing in on the ancient city of Palmyra, where they attempting to advance to from two different flanks.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 67th Brigade – in close coordination with Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks) – continued their advance inside Al-Dawa in the Palmyra countryside, seizing almost the entire village after a violent battle with ISIS. Meanwhile, to the northeast of Al-Dawa, the Desert Hawks and Panther Forces imposed full control over the small hilltop of Tal Halawa near the Ancient Palmyra Quarries.

Of course, seizing the Caliphate's "capital" of Raqqa is still the end goal, and would have tremendous symbolic value for Assad and his allies:

[G]overnment forces have advanced along the M45-highway (Hama to Raqqah) and reached the western fringes of ar-Raqqah province while also completely repelling the ISIS offensive which had the government supply route to Aleppo cut last week. Meanwhile, Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have taken firm control of the northern region of the ar-Raqqah governorate. Last year, Kurdish forces won a last-minute battle against ISIS at Kobane city. Moreover, the YPG seized upon vital momentum and remarkably captured the entire Turkish-Syrian border area which stretches from ar-Raqqah to Hasakah together with hundreds of ISIS-held villages.

Russian airstrikes have been critical to the rapid advance. And speed is of the essence: As long as ISIS remains a serious threat in Syria, Turkey and Saudi Arabia can use it as an excuse to "intervene."

Syria: Russian Air Force Targets Militants' Oil Tankers in Homs Province
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13941215000331

The Russian warplanes bombed the oil transport routes used by the ISIL near the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) and al-Sakhanah; these roads flow through Raqqa and Aleppo provinces before reaching the Turkish border.

The Russian Air Force specifically struck the ISIL positions at the villages of Rasm Al-‘Arnab and Wadi al-Abyadh, destroying several oil supply trucks and a command-and-control center.

On Friday, The Syrian Army troops and their popular allies continued to advance against the ISIL terrorists Southeast of Homs province and seized one more key village in the region.

The Syrian army, Liwa Suqour al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) imposed full control over the village of al-Bayarat after a violent battle with the ISIL militants.

Following the capture of al-Bayarat, the Syrian army men and their allies advanced to nearby al-Dawah and captured at least half of the village following an intense battle with the ISIL combatants.

US Sends 'Small Armada' to Confront China as Beijing Accuses Washington of 'Containment'
http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/us-sends-small-armada-confront-china-beijing-accuses-washington-containment/ri13186

The US is stirring up trouble in the South China Sea. Obama's so-called "pivot to Asia" has always meant one thing and one thing only: Provoking China and threatening its sphere of influence.

And luckily for Obama, the US has perfected the art of military provocation. It's now been confirmed that the US Navy has sent a "small armada" consisting of "the carrier John C. Stennis, two destroyers, two cruisers and the 7th Fleet flagship" to the South China Sea in order to "confront" China.

Some might wonder why China needs to be "confronted" in the South China Sea. As usual, it has nothing to to with "democracy promotion" and everything to do with economic control of the region:

The arrival of group led by the carrier USS John C. Stennis is seen as the latest signal to China that the US will continue to enforce freedom of navigation in the waters through which about US$5 trillion ($7.4 trillion) of trade is shipped each year.

But China is not preventing freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. So how does Washington justify deploying a carrier strike group to the area? It's all China's fault, of
course:

The stand-off has been heating up on both sides. After news in February that the Chinese deployed an advanced surface-to-air missile battery to the Paracel Islands, U.S. Pacific Command head Adm. Harry Harris told lawmakers that China was militarizing the South China Sea.

"In my opinion China is clearly militarizing the South China Sea," Harris testified on Feb. 24. "You’d have to believe in a flat Earth to believe otherwise."

China has repeatedly warned the US against provoking needless conflict in the South China Sea. Earlier this week, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman reiterated Beijing's concerns:

Spokesperson Hong Lei made the remarks when responding to reports that U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Tuesday said in a speech in San Francisco that China must not pursue militarization in the South China Sea, and he warned China against "aggressive" actions in the region.

China's deployment of limited and necessary national defense facilities in its own territory is far from new, Hong said, adding that China's exercise of self-preservation and defense is a right granted by international law to sovereign states.

The United States has continued to increase its military presence in the South China Sea for a long time, Hong said, noting that the U.S. side also carries out highly targeted military drills in the region and has sent military vessels and planes into China's territory without authorization to conduct close surveillance.

"What the United States has done has intensified tensions and is most likely to cause militarization in the South China Sea," Hong said.

Beijing has also stressed that "China is firm in its determination and resolve to maintain its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests."

Territorial sovereignty -- not something that the US is too keen on.

A new U.S. commander takes over a deteriorating Afghanistan war
http://www.latimes.com/world/afghanistan-pakistan/la-fg-afghanistan-us-military-20160302-story.html?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link

A new commander took charge of the U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan on Wednesday as a deadly suicide bombing illustrated the challenges he confronts in a conflict now in its 15th year.

Gen. John W. “Mick” Nicholson took over from Gen. John F. Campbell during a ceremony at NATO coalition headquarters in Kabul
at a moment when insurgents control more territory in Afghanistan than at any time since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

Nicholson, 58, praised Afghan and international forces for continuing the fight against antigovernment militants, who now include not only the Taliban but also fighters claiming allegiance to Syria- and Iraq-based Islamic State.

Taliban refuses to hold peace talks with Afghan govt

KABUL: The Taliban on Saturday refused to resume long-stalled peace talks with the Afghan government, reiterating their preconditions for holding dialogue, a statement said.

"We want to repeat our stance once again that until the occupation of foreign troops ends, until Taliban names are removed from international blacklists and until our detainees are released, talks will yield no results," it said.

Stunning images of the massive multinational NATO military exercise in Europe's far north
http://www.businessinsider.com/cold-response-2016-military-exercise-2016-3

Norway is currently playing host to a massive multi-national NATO exercise that is meant to enhance the military organization's collective response capabilities.

Hosted in Norway's central region, Cold Response is an annual military exercise. This year, the exercise will be comprised of 15,000 personnel from over ten countries. Some of the countries participating are NATO members Canada, France, and non-NATO country Sweden.

The US's contribution to Cold Response 2016 include tanks, mobile artillery, and special operations units.

You can view photos of the exercise below.

In a rare deployment, B-52 bombers head to Europe for training exercises
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/03/02/in-a-rare-deployment-b-52-bombers-head-to-europe-for-training-exercises/

Three B-52 Stratofortress bombers deployed to Europe last week to participate in a series of training exercises in Norway, a move that the top U.S. commander for the region called “not normal.”

Since Russia’s incursion into Ukraine in 2014, the United States has steadily increased the use of heavy bombers in joint exercises across the region. In 2015, a number of B-52s and B-2 bombers participated in a series of NATO-led training missions across Europe.

Russian aircraft have increasingly skirted, and sometimes entered, European airspace, causing countries to scramble fighters to intercept their Russian visitors. Last month, two British jets had to escort a Russian Tu-160 heavy bomber after it approached England from the northeast.

U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove said Tuesday that while the B-52’s deployment was abnormal, the aircraft’s presence was scheduled and not in reaction to any particular move by Russia or any other country.

It is uncommon for the large bombers to deploy to mainland Europe, since they usually take off from the United States, refuel, and carry out their assigned duties before returning to their home stations. In previous bomber deployments to the region, the aircraft have often been temporarily stationed out of the Royal Air Force Base in Fairford, England.

The three B-52s, from the 2nd Bomb Wing, took off from Barksdale Air Force base on Friday, and will be temporarily stationed at Moron Airbase in Spain, along with 200 support personnel. The bombers will be accompanied by various other aircraft participating in the exercise.

The B-52, alongside the B-1B Lancer, is the aging workhorse of the U.S. bomber fleet. First fielded in 1950s, the bomber has been steadily upgraded over the years and is capable of carrying a nuclear payload as well as launching cruise missiles from its bomb bay.

Maybe, Qatar-based Miramax film studio will be producing the next staged photo shots?

Qatar-based beIN buys 100 percent of Miramax film studio
http://www.azfamily.com/story/31373463/qatar-based-bein-buys-100-percent-of-miramax-film-studio

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - A Qatar-based media group that has already moved into international sports broadcasting has purchased a 100-percent stake in the film studio Miramax, part of its expansion into the entertainment business.

The beIN Media Group, which earlier spun off from Doha's Al-Jazeera network, bought the studio famous for "Pulp Fiction," ''No Country for Old Men" and "The English Patient" from investors including Colony Capital and the Qatar Investment Authority, the Gulf nation's sovereign wealth fund.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed in a statement announcing the purchase late Wednesday. The beIN network did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.

"Miramax is a successful film and television company, providing a strong and recognizable brand, a unique library and industry expertise that complement beIN Media Group's plans to grow across the entertainment industry and develop new content production," Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, beIN's chairman and CEO, said in the statement.

Producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein founded Miramax in 1979, naming it after their parents Miriam and Max. They built it into one of the most successful independents in the movie business, churning out many of the hits of 1990s independent cinema.

Walt Disney Co. acquired Miramax in 1993 for some $60 million. Disney sold the studio in 2010 to a group of investors for $660 million.

The move to purchase Miramax comes as beIN expands its presence across the world after purchasing rights to broadcast European football leagues and others sports. Qatar itself is spending tens of billions of dollars ahead of hosting the 2022 World Cup.

But the purchase also comes as Qatar faces pressure from low global oil and gas prices, which fuel its economy.

Moscow, a rampart against the jihadists
http://www.voltairenet.org/article190506.html

Since 2012, Moscow has been trying to rally the Western powers to its cause – to defend civilisation against jihadism, as the world was once united against Nazism. In order to do so, it first of all dissociated the White House from the combatants that the United States call « rebels », and whom Moscow regards as « jihadists ». Today, it is trying to isolate Turkey. Far from being a diplomatic epiphenomenon, the cessation of hostilities in Syria marks an about-face. Washington has just admitted that there are no « moderate » armed groups, or none left.

We are wrong to analyse Russian politics from the Arab or Western point of view. Russia has its own view of jihadists, with whom it is familiar since 1978, when they came to lend a helping hand to the Afghan Pashtuns against the Communist government in Kabul.

Vladimir Putin personally fought the jihadists from the Caucasus, in particular the Islamic Emirate of Itchkeria (the second Chechen war 1999-2000), and beat them. At the time, the Arabs claimed to support tbe Russian Muslims, although they did not understand what was happening there, while the West, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, applauded any group who attempted to pursue the movement of the dislocation of Russia. However, on the ground, there was no difference between yesterday’s Emirate and today’s Caliphate. The charia was still applied, and heads were chopped off in Grozny just as they are today in Rakka.

Today, despite propaganda claiming that the war in Syria is a war against Islam, or that the Syrian Arab Republic is an « Alawite (sic) dictatorship (re-sic) » which massacres Sunnis, the facts remain – the Syrian Arab Army currently fighting the jihadists is composed of 70 % Sunnis.

In 2012, which is to say almost at the beginning of the war, at the moment when the United States DIA warned the White House against the force that was to become Daesh, Vladimir Putin declared that Syria had become a « Russian interior question ». Since then, he has been trying to create an international Coalition with the West against the jihadists.

Russia remembers how the world changed in the 1930’s. At that time, the King of England, Edward VIII, was a public supporter of Nazism. Montagu Norman, the governor of the Bank of England, financed Adolf Hitler’s accession to power with the Crown’s money [1]. The British thought that in this way, they were supporting a state capable of overthrowing the Soviet Union, which had eliminated Tsar Nicolas II, and was a threat to their capitalist interests. However, during the Second World War, they allied with Stalin and Mao against Hitler.

Vladimir Putin hopes to be able to overturn today’s alliances, as was the case in the period 1936-39. This is why, over the last few years, he has been working to treat the United States as « partners », even while Washington was stabbing him in the back, organising demonstrations in Moscow against his governement (2011-12) and mounting a coup d’État in Ukraine (2013-14).

On the 10th February, Russian ambassador Vitali Tchourkine distributed to all the members of the Security Council an intelligence report concerning the activities of Turkey in support of the jihadists [2]. This two-page document presents ten indisputable facts. It attests to the fact that Turkey is a gangster-state which for many years has been deliberately violating a quantity of UN Resolutions. Each of these facts connects to networks and agents who once supported the Chechen jihadists. In those days, the Turkish state as such was not implicated, but the Welfare Party (Refah). Today, Refah has been disbanded and replaced by the AKP. Since the AKP is now in power, the Turkish state is now implicated [3].

Today, the resolute Russian bear is attempting to separate Turkey from NATO. The future of humanity depends on this operation. Either Turkey stays in the Atlantist Alliance, thus able to support the jihadists, not only in Syria, but also in Iraq and Libya, and, finally, all over the world. Or else NATO distances itself from Turkey, in which case the United States and Russia would effectively be allied to fight the jihadists efficiently, wherever they may be.

It seems that on the 12th February, the Russians were able to separate the White House from the neo-conservatives and liberal hawks who support Turkey and the jihadists. Sergey Lavrov and John Kerry agreed to create two work groups, which they co-preside, which relegates the UNO to the role of simple clerk [4]. In other terms, Jeffrey Feltman, who has been using his functions as United Nations number 2 to sabotage all efforts for peace over the last three and a half years, has now been benched [5]. The result ? In only 10 days, Russia and the United States have been able to conclude the conditions for a cessation of hostilities which has been awaiting finalisation since 2012 [6].

President Putin decided to announce personally on TV the conclusion of the agreement with the United States for the cessation of hostilities.

This cessation of hostilities was firmly rejected by the « National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces », whose President, the Turco-Syrian Khaled Khoja, commented in a letter to the Security Council - « It is absolutely scandalous to conclude bilateral agreements with Russia on a "cessation of hostilities", when these agreements do not concern one of the main killers of civilians in Syria, the Russian Federation. It is high time for Russia to leave Syria and end the brutal war that it is waging against our fellow country-men » [7].

This agreement is in reality a trap aimed at destroying the whole system created by the neo-conservatives and the liberal hawks. Already, during the Genève 3 negotiations, Russia had patiently revealed the bad faith of the « opposition » supported by Saudi Arabia and Turkey. This opposition had already discredited itself without any help by its procrastination. The question is not so much the representativity of the opposition, but to show that it has no desire to improve the living conditions of the Syrian people, only to overthrow the Syrian Arab Republic. The comment quoted above is convincing enough, since, contrary to M. Khoja’s allegations, the cessation of hostilities does in fact concern Russia, but not the groups listed as terrorists by the United Nations.

The cessation of hostilities is aimed at facing the armed groups with their responsibilities. All they had to do was sign up with Washington or Moscow to avoid being bombed by the Russians or the Syrians, but in this case, they would have been obliged to renounce their project for the overthrow of the Syrian Arab Republic, and join a political process in favour of a secular, democratic Syria, in other words, to abandon the dream of an Islamic state. Only 97 Katibas of the thousand in existence would have dared to engage in a process which makes them « traitors » to the Turkish cause, and marks them as the next victims of their jihadist ex-comrades.

Moreover, the Western powers could not have dreamed of a better outcome. On the 15th December 2015, during a Senate hearing, General Didier Castres, responsible for French external operations assured that the total number of combatants susceptible of being moderates did not exceed 20,000 [8]. While in January 2016, a German intelligence report affirmed that the proportion of Syrian combatants participating in all the armed groups in Syria would not exceed 5 % [9].

This is exactly the result that Kerry and Lavrov were looking for when they spoke of a cessation of hostilities and not a cease-fire – the second expression being the only one with legal consequences.

This enables us to understand John Kerry’s answer to the question posed by a senator during a parliamentary hearing concerning an eventual « plan B » for use, if necessary, as a get-out clause. If the cessation of hostilities fails to work, there could be no partition of Syria, simply because the plan for the cessation of hostilities will have shown that the choice is not between Damascus and the « rebels », but between Damascus and the « jihadists ».

For President el-Assad’s advisor, Kerry’s « plan B » should be aimed at fighting the jihadists.

By the same logic, the Luxembourg Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, declared to Der Spiegel that NATO would not allow itself to get dragged into a war started by Turkey against Russia [10]. Article 5 of the NATO Alliance provides for the support of a member state only when it is directly attacked, not when it initiates a conflict [11]. Comments confirmed by Germany to the Daily Mail [12].

As from now, the White House is preparing to sacrifice Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who will probably be held responsible for everything that has gone wrong in the region. The Turkish President may be assassinated, like his predecessor Turgut Özal, in 1993, or else be overthrown by those close to him. Failing that, the war will be displaced from Syria to Turkey, and Vladimir Putin will have won his bet – to shift the front lines in such a way as to cause the Western powers to fight alongside him against the jihadists that they themselves created.

Keep in mind :
- Russia did not go to war in Syria to defend economic interests or resuscitate a Cold War alliance, but to fight the jihadists.
- Since 2012, Russia has been trying to split the Western powers from the jihadists, whom they created and have supported since 1978.
- By conluding the Munich agreement, John Kerry has accepted to relegate Jeffrey Feltman, the leader of the neo-conservatives in the UNO, to a subordinate role. By proposing a cessation of hostilities, he has made it possible to separate the reasonable Syrian combatants from the jihadists.

I can't help but think, that the "deal" to sacrifice Erdogan was concluded as part of the back room dealings between Russia and US for the ceasefire. If this is the case, then its perfect and cold revenge for the back-stabbing Sultan for downing the Russian plane. Hope this happens...

Is Erdogan Trying to Stop a US-Backed Coup?
http://russia-insider.com/en/turkey-imploding-chaos-istanbul-erdogan-raids-largest-newspaper/ri13196

It seems that every week, Erdogan finds a new way to exhibit his authoritarian leanings: Turkey's largest newspaper, Zaman, was raided by authorities on Friday, resulting in demonstrations in Istanbul which were broken up (violently) by police.

Ankara has never been particularly kind to journalists. But this is perhaps the boldest attempt yet to crack down on the press. Turkey's western partners have expressed concern, but how genuine are they really being?

The EU's diplomatic service said that Turkey "needs to respect and promote high democratic standards and practices, including freedom of the media", while the US described the move as "troubling".

The Saturday edition of the newspaper was printed before the government-backed administrators had taken control.

"The Constitution is suspended," a headline in large font on a black background reads on the front page.

"The Turkish press has experienced one of the darkest days in its history," the paper adds.

But Erdogan has good reason to believe that the west is cooking up trouble in Turkey. When you factor in Erdogan's "refugee blackmail" scam (which of course received support from elements within Europe and the US), as well as his documented ties to ISIS and other extremist groups, it could be argued that Erdogan is now a serious liability for NATO and Europe. Simply put, Erdogan is an easy scapegoat who has little left to offer his western masters. Here's how one journalist describes the situation in Turkey:

"Everybody who opposes them [the government], every journalist who is against the government is being framed. I was framed as a terrorist supporter and Zaman is linked to the Gulen movement – which is a movement of a religious Turkish leader [Sunni cleric Fethullah Gulen] who is based in the US, and they say he is trying to stage a coup against the government. So now Zaman journalists and people who read Zaman are being framed as coup supporters, that's how the government is doing it," Frederike Geerdink, Dutch freelance journalist who was deported from Turkey last year, told RT.

Erdogan is definitely suppressing journalists in an attempt to keep Ankara's ties to ISIS (and its crimes against the Syrian Kurds) under wraps. But here's the thing: The Gulen movement is a serious threat to his rule. There may very well be legitimate reasons to raid Zaman, but who's going to believe Erdogan? Ankara says it's foiling a coup attempt -- but of course, given Erdogan's long history of lies and bullshit, nobody believes him. As Reuters reports:

A court on Friday appointed an administrator to run the flagship Zaman, English-language Today's Zaman and Cihan agency, linked to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who President Tayyip Erdogan says was plotting a coup.

Turkey has the right to question those who take part in a clear coup attempt, whether economic or journalistic, against an elected government," Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said while on a trip to Tehran.

"There is a legal process examining charges of political operations, including funnelling illegal monies. We have never intervened in the legal process," he said.

Yes, Erdogan is a wannabe sultan. Yes, his attacks on the press are despicable. But the threat of a coup seems very real to us -- and you can bet that such a coup would have the full support of the west.

Did the west just backstab Erdogan?

'Accurate and Efficient': Leaked NATO Report Praises Russia's Air Campaign in Syria
http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/accurate-and-efficient-leaked-nato-report-praises-russias-air-campaign-syria/ri13199

A classified report leaked to the German media reveals that NATO is impressed by the professionalism and efficiency of Russia's air campaign in Syria.

In five months, Russia was able to turn the tables in Syria and implement a ceasefire. It took Russia less than half a year to accomplish what the United States and its allies couldn't achieve in five years. Putin's decision to get involved in Syria was a gamble -- but an incredibly successful one. Don't believe us? Just ask NATO:

The Russian task force in Syria has demonstrated remarkable efficiency and professionalism, according to a German magazine citing confidential NATO analysis.

The limited Russian contingent operating in Syria is outperforming the more widespread groupings of the US-led anti-Islamic State coalition, according to Germany’s FOCUS media outlet who came by the classified NATO document, which was prepared by the alliance’s military experts.

Remember in October when US military "experts" predicted that the Russians wouldn't be able to surpass 30 sorties a day?

The vast majority of U.S. military officials had predicted a far lower sortie generation rate from the Russian military. Most had predicted a sortie generation rate of around twenty per day. “If I had thirty-two airplanes and they were all different I think we could—with good logistics—get a four-turn-four from the Su-24s, a four-turn-four from the Su-25s, and two-turn-twos from the Su-30s and Su-34s…” another U.S. Air Force official had predicted. “So that’s twenty-four sorties a day.”

As the classified NATO document points out, Russia has seriously outperformed expectations in Syria:

The document points out that Russia deployed 40 warplanes, performing some 75 sorties a day (until the ceasefire came into effect on February 27). The airstrikes, usually delivered on several targets during each combat flight, are “accurate and efficient,” the analysis reportedly says.

The US-led counterterrorist coalition, deploying about 180 warplanes against Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), strikes only about 20 targets a day. The paper says the number of Russian fighter jets on the ground is “clearly inferior in number” to NATO’s group, but the higher frequency of the Russian air raids makes them more effective.

The leaked report reminds us of an article written some months ago by a US Navy commander who warned the west not to underestimate Russia's capabilities in Syria.

Also: the NATO report doesn't mention any "hospital target practice" or "massacred orphanages" or any of the other outrageous, unsubstantiated claims made in the media.

We get it, NATO: Accuse Russia of killing babies in public, drool over highly professional, historic military campaign in private.

Right Wing Polish Govt Rocked By Resignation Of Generals As Tensions With Russia Build
http://www.breitbart.com/london/2016/03/05/right-wing-polish-govt-rocked-by-resignation-of-generals-as-tensions-with-russia-build/?

The surprise resignations of several key Polish generals have rocked the new conservative government, which is facing a barrage of criticism at home and abroad over a host of controversial reforms.

“Five generals have submitted their resignations over the last few days,” Szczepan Gluszczak, spokesman for the general command of the Polish armed forces, told commercial television channel Polsat on Friday.

The generals quit just as tensions run high with Poland’s Soviet-era master Russia.

The resignations came months ahead of a large NATO exercise in Poland, as well as the western defence alliance’s next summit, set for July in Warsaw.

It is the latest hurdle to trip up the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party that came to power in October after eight years in opposition.

The PiS has introduced controversial reforms giving the government more control over the constitutional court, state media and other institutions in a move that has alarmed the European Union and inspired street demonstrations.

Critics also say the new government has weakened the economy and two global ratings agencies have responded with warnings.

Gluszczak did not specify who had resigned, but local media reported that the generals in question included joint staff chief Ireneusz Bartniak and the commanders of land forces, the navy and the armoured and airborne forces.

The Syrian Army and allied popular units have inflicted heavy losses on Daesh terrorists in the northern Raqqa province in a series of fierce clashes with the enemy, Iran’s Fars news agency reported.

Syrian warplanes raided and destroyed a military convoy of the Daesh terrorist group killing many militants and destroying their vehicles.

The terrorists later confirmed their pullback from the key town of Tal Abyadh in the north of the province near the Turkish border as a result of sustained attacks by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Nusra Front Terrorists Shell Turkey to Provoke Return Fire

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160306/1035869598/syria-turkey-russia-nusra.html

The Nusra Front terrorists shelled Turkish territory several times from Syria to provoke return fire from Turkish armed forces, the head of Russia’s reconciliation center said Sunday.

HMEYMIM (Sputnik) – Lt. Gen. Kuralenko added that Daesh amassed near Turkey’s Nusaybin city.

“On March 6, 2016, Jebhat al-Nusra repeatedly fired mortars at Turkish territory near the village of Metishli. The terrorists’ actions are aimed at provoking retaliatory fire by the Turkish military and its units’ engagement in Syria, which will inevitably lead to the disruption of the peace process,” Lt. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko said.

“According to our information, the terrorists are preparing an attack on the town of Qamishli, located on Syrian territory and populated by the Syrian Kurds,” he stressed.

Kuralenko added that little-known Jund al-Malihash militant group fighters obstructed road links in Daraa province between the Nahteh and Hirak settlements.

“At the same time they stop cars with civilians and threaten them with violence because of the refusal to participate in military operations,” he said.
