Russia Begins Operations in Syria: End Game for the US Empire?

I think it's more that there are no "Russian lies" for them to tear apart.
That's actually what I meant, I was a bit unclear. What I meant with "they avoid that" was that for example the russian version of the missile interceptions not only states their observations but also how it relates to the US version, as far as I remember what I have read. But I didn't see the US stating their version AND explaining why the russian one wouldn't hold true.
Apparently one of those sides can deal with both worlds, and the other one can only exist within its own fabcrications.

But it a strange way, also somewhat entertaining, like a train wreck in slow-motion. What I think is so crazy is that they went for almost everyone, at the same time. And now peeps are banding together and talking to each other about it even more. They really showed their hand with that move. Funny enough the extra exposure is having effect of exposing other people to alternative news sources, which may in turn further expose the MSM liars for what they are: fake news!

That's so true! It's been so ridiculous on their part that it's just amazing. And it's so funny to read the comments made by so many people in different threads talking about these "bots" article by The Guardian, it's backfiring on them big time. Also, as you say, now we can all follow each other and start sharing even more. That's quite interesting actually, how people seem to be talking and sharing quite a lot in response. I guess the MSM will need to publish an article about an increase in "Russian bots" by 10,000% now...

Fri Apr 20, 2018 - Large Cache of Weapons, Ammunition Made in US, Israel Found in Terrorists' Positions in Douma
Farsnews

The Syrian Army men discovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition made by the US and Israel in Jeish al-Islam's positions in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, a Russian media outlet reported on Friday.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik quoted a military source as saying that the army men continued their mop-up operation in Douma and found several warehouses in the town's schools, institutions and facilities with a large volume of arms and ammunition manufactured in the US and Israel.

In the meantime, the army's engineering units have thus far defused hundreds of landmines and bombs planted by the terrorists in Douma's buildings before leaving the town for the town of Jarabulus in Northern Syria, the Arabic Sputnik said.

The terrorists' planted a large volume of bombs and explosives in residential areas in Douma to prevent civilians from returning to the newly-freed town.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik reported that a sum of 1,384 militants and their family members with a total number of 3,792 left Douma for the town of Jarabulus in Northeastern Aleppo on 85 buses.

It went on to say that the evacuation process will continue for the next two days due to logistical reasons, adding that Jeish al-Islam has handed over its light and semi-heavy arms to the army.

The Arabic Sputnik further said that Israeli sniper rifles and Belgian-made RPG rockets and PKC machineguns were among the arms.

Sat Apr 21, 2018 - Russian Military Finds Precursor to Chemical Weapons in Terrorists' Lab in Syria's Douma
Farsnews

Russian servicemen found another evidence of manufacturing of military poisonous substances by Jeish al-Islam terrorists in the Syrian town of Douma, where a false-flag attack took place, serving as a pretext for the US and allies to blame the government and strike the country.

"During the examination of the chemical laboratory a lot of hexamin was discovered, which is yet more proof that militants had been producing chemical weapons," a specialist of Russia's radiological, chemical and biological defense corps, Alexander Rodionov, told journalists, Sputnik reported.

He explained that the substance is used for making explosives, as well as sarin-type nerve agents.

Russian servicemen have found a laboratory in Douma which could have been used by terrorists to manufacture chemical weapons.

A former member of the UN’s biological commission said it was "highly likely" that the lab's equipment was made in Germany or the UK.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that militants left Douma on April 13 — over 21,00 of them and their family members moved out of the town via humanitarian corridors.

Fri Apr 20, 2018 - ISIL Terrorists Raise White Flags across Southern Damascus Following Gov't Forces' Advances
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970131000385

Unconfirmed reports have begun to emerge on pro-government social media pages covering events in Southern Damascus that ISIL terrorists under attack by the Syrian Army and its allies are raising white flags.

Reports claim that the raising of white flags by ISIL fighters has been observed in Yarmouk Refugee Camp, al-Qadam and Hajar al-Aswad, three key embattled regions at the present time, massdar news reported on Friday.

Even if true, the chances are that such an event is being done on an individual basis, rather than being a collective move.

To this end there exists an indication that some ISIL terrorists in Southern Damascus preferred evacuation rather than a battle with the Syrian Army.

Fri Apr 20, 2018 - Syrian Army Launches Southern Damascus Operation after Terrorists' Refusal to Leave Positions
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970131000492

The Syrian Army troops launched a major assault on ISIL in Southern Damascus after the terrorists deployed in Eastern Syria refused to host their comrades from Yarmouk Camp and Hajar al-Aswad region that are under the army's siege, an Arab media outlet reported on Friday.

Al-Mayadeen TV network reported that the ISIL terrorists, deployed in al-Kheir Welayat South of al-Sukhnah region in Eastern Homs, refused to host their comrades and their family members trapped in Yarmouk and Hajar al-Aswad.

It further added that the ISIL in Southern Damascus then set further conditions for leaving their positions.

Al-Mayadeen went on to say that the army launched heavy fire at ISIL's positions after evacuation talks failed.

The Syrian Air force then pounded the strongholds of ISIL and the Al-Nusra front (also known as Fatah al-Sham Front or the Levant Liberation Board) in Hajar al-Aswad and al-Asali regions, the TV network added.

It further said that the army's artillery and missile units pounded terrorists' supply lines in Hajar al-Aswad, al-Qadam, al-Asali and Yarmouk, adding that the army is to launch an imminent operation in the reigns that are under the control of ISIL and Al-Nusra in Southern Damascus.

A media outlet reported on Thursday that the Syrian army gave a 2-day ultimatum to the terrorists in Southern Damascus to leave the region before it starts a major assault against the ISIL.

The Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper reported on Thursday that the Syrian army continues dispatch of new military equipment and forces to anti-ISIL operations zones in al-Yarmouk camp, Hajar al-Aswad region and parts of al-Tazamon and al-Qadam neighborhoods.

It added that the army gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the ISIL to agree with withdrawal from the region, otherwise the army would start its operations in the region.

Russia: 'They bombed negotiations in Geneva'- Lavrov and de Mistura discuss Syria

On April 14, the USA along with the UK and France “bombed not only the imaginary chemical facilities in Syria, but they bombed the negotiations in Geneva as well,” stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the joint press-conference with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Moscow, Friday.

Speaking after talks with De Mistura, the Russian top diplomat expressed concern over the callings by the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces on the US-led coalition to spread “the military operation across the entire territory of Syria.”

Lavrov urged those who “control this group of opposition forces” to influence them.

Staffan de Mistura, on his part, praised “strong commitment from the Russian Federation to push for the political process” in Syria.

The UN Special Envoy for Syria emphasised the commitment to walk away from “alleged chemical attack” and go back to “the basics.” “The basics is – lower pressure, political process and trying to avoid that Syria becomes an international area of playground of tensions,” explained Staffan de Mistura.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the Syrian situation, the Skripal poisoning and the possibility of Russian leader Vladimir Putin meeting US President Donald Trump at the White House during an interview in Moscow on Friday

Lavrov said that Trump had proposed a meeting to Putin during the presidents’ phone call, hoping that “he [Trump] will be more specific with regard to [this proposal].”

Talking about the airstrikes the US, France and the UK conducted as a response to the alleged chemical attack in Douma, Lavrov said that Russian military informed the US-led coalition on Moscow’s “red lines” prior to the missile raid, adding that “the results show that they have not crossed these ‘red lines’.”

Turning onto the Skripal case and the OPCW’s investigation into it, Lavrov accused the UK of directing the organisation’s probe in order to get the results desired by London.

White House confirms Trump still wants to meet with Putin

US President Donald Trump still wants to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a well-informed official at the National Security Council told TASS on Friday.

The will to hold the meeting is still there, since President Trump is convinced good relations might suit the interests of both the US and Russia, he said commenting on an earlier statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said Putin was ready to meet with Trump.

The official recalled the Trump said on March 20 Putin and he had discussed the possibility of a meeting at several different venues, including the White House.

The Kremlin press service said on March 20 Trump had congratulated Putin on winning the March 18 presidential election. The two leaders spoke in favor of practical collaboration in various areas and agreed to issue instructions to their administrations on arranging the summit.

From the very beginning of his term of office, Trump has been speaking in favor of improvement of relations with Russia. However, over the time that has elapsed since his inauguration, the American-Russian relations have been deteriorating incessantly.

The US has introduced one package of anti-Russian sanctions after another and has done two amassed expulsions of Russian diplomats.

Also, the Americans have closed down Russian Consulates General in San Francisco and Seattle.

Putin and Trump have not had a full-fledged bilateral meeting so far. They only spoke twice to each other on the sidelines of major international summits - the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit in Da Nang, Vietnam, and the G20 summit conference in Hamburg.

Video footage has been released by Hezbollah-linked media showing dozens of buses preparing to evacuate Syrian militants from the city of Ad-Dumayr in northeastern Damascus province to northern Aleppo province.

The event saw some 1,500 Jaysh al-Islam fighters depart Ad-Dumayr after being present in inside the city for many years during which time they used it as a stronghold.

Following the departure of insurgents from Ad-Dumayr, Syrian security forces entered the city on Thursday afternoon and raised the national flag above it, thus signalling its return to government control.

Fighters who have left Ad-Dumayr with the evacuation convoy are to be received by Turkish-backed rebels in northern Aleppo and resettled in the town of Jarablus.

Russian jet responsible for transporting S-400 system lands in Syria

The Russian An-124 strategic airlift jet reportedly landed at the Hmaymim Military Airport in southwest Latakia on Friday, local reports claimed this evening.

This Russian aircraft is a strategic airlift jet that can carry up to 150 tons of cargo.

The An-124 was previously used by the Russian Aerospace Forces to transport the S-400 system to Syria in late 2015.

According to some rumors from pro-government pages, the Russian An-124 was transporting the S-300 system to Syria; however, these claims remain unfounded.

The An-124 does not make many trips to Syria, so its latest arrival at the Hmaymim Airport has raised some questions as to why an aircraft like this would make its way to southwest Latakia.

Russian ambassador to the UK Alexander Yakovenko held a press conference yesterday. I have only watched the first 20 mins or so and he already mentioned the testimony of the child in Douma about the staging of the 'chemical' attack, and he says they have dozens such testimonies which they plan to take to the UN Security Council. He also mentioned the BBC interview with Admiral West, as well as the alleged Yulia Skripal statement which he says is written in a language uncharacteristic of her. Awesome! The information war is raging:

That was awesome! I watched his press conference before that one as well, and the guy is really on a roll - to the point that he seems to enjoy tearing apart the nonsense MSM narrative, using excellent reasoning and a detailed grasp of the situation. Interesting that some of the questions from the media clearly show that some of the journalists simply don't have the mental capacity to even follow his legal and procedural arguments; they really are like children in a sense who cannot think beyond "these are the good guys, these the bad ones" and so on. Quite fascinating to see such a reality split in real time. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but the dpa guy seemed pretty torn between protecting his (MSM) narrative and the overwhelming evidence and common sense (and humanity!) of the ambassador's presentation - he had that disbelieving, hostile look on his face but he also seemed to think very hard. Interesting times we live in.

A German national accused of helping to plot the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 has been arrested by the Kurdish security forces in northern Syria, the AFP News Agency reported.
“Mohammed Haydar Zammar has been arrested by Kurdish security forces in northern Syria and is now being interrogated,” a top official said, without providing further details.

Zammar was previously arrested by the Syrian government in 2008 for being a Muslim Brotherhood member; however, in 2011 he was released per an amnesty bill.

It is still not clear whether or not Zammar was actively fighting in Syria when he was caught nor have the Kurdish security forces commented on this matter.

Mohammed Haydar Zammar was arrested by security forces in northern Syria, Kurdish commander says. Zammar has been accused of recruiting some of the 11 September hijackers.

A Syrian-born German national accused of helping to plan the 11 September attacks has been captured by Kurdish forces in Syria, a senior Kurdish commander told AFP on Wednesday.

"Mohammed Haydar Zammar has been arrested by Kurdish security forces in northern Syria and is now being interrogated," the top official said, without providing further details.

Zammar had previously been detained by the Syrian government in the early years of the civil war, but he was freed for unknown reasons in 2014, the Washington Post reported, citing unidentified US officials.

Zammar, who is in his mid-fifties, has been accused of recruiting some of the 9/11 hijackers.

He was detained in Morocco in December 2001 in an operation involving CIA agents, and was handed over to the Syrian authorities two weeks later.

A Syrian court sentenced Zammar to 12 years in prison in 2007 for belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, a charge that at the time could have resulted in the death penalty.

He was an influential cleric in Germany who helped arrange travel for Mohammed Atta - the head hijacker of the 9/11 attacks - to Afghanistan for al-Qaeda training, according to the Washington Post.

German officials said that Zammar frequently spoke with Atta and visited him at home while they were both living in Hamburg.

The 9/11 Commission Report, which studied why and how the 2001 World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks occurred, said Zammar “relished any opportunity to extol the virtues of violent jihad”.

Still, the Post said Zammar may not have been aware of the plot to attack the US, citing Ramzi Binalshibh's testimony - another accused facilitator of the 9/11 attacks who is currently detained in Guantanamo Bay.

German jihadist with links to 9/11 attackers 'detained by Kurdish forces in Syria'
A commander based with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance said German citizen Mohammed Haydar Zammar was in custody and under interrogation.

He did not confirm whether or not Zammar was believed to have been fighting on the side of ISIS.

The US-led global coalition which is fighting against ISIS was unable to confirm the veracity of the report from AFP – but SDF has detained hundreds of foreign ISIS militants as it drives the jihadist group from tens of thousands of kilometres of northern and eastern Syria.

The jihadis are allegedly being held in camps near the city of Raqqa, which served as the unofficial capital of the ISIS caliphate until its defeat at the hands of the SDF in October.

German newspaper Bild, citing Kurdish sources, said Zammer was in a prison run by the YPG militia.

Syrian-born Zammar moved to Germany in 1971, and by the late 1990s, was a prominent Islamist based in Hamburg.

The 9/11 Commission Report described him as "a well-known figure in the Muslim community (and to German and US intelligence agencies by the late 1990s)”, having fought in Afghanistan and “relished any opportunity to extol the virtues of violent jihad”.

The reported suggested he had encouraged 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta and other members of what it termed the “Hamburg cell" to become jihadists and go to Afghanistan to attend an al-Qaeda training camp.

And the report acknowledged that there no indication that Zammar was aware of a specific plot to attack the US.

German authorities investigated Zammar after 9/11 and he was arrested on suspicion that he had "supported a terrorist organisation", but subsequently released, after which he left the country.

Two months after the attacks, Zammar was seized by CIA agents in Morocco and taken to Syria, where he was handed over to Syrian intelligence agents, and allegedly tortured in detention.

Information extracted was reported to have been passed on to US and German counterparts.

Then, in 2007, a Syrian court jailed him for 12 years for four offences, including membership of the outlawed Syrian Muslim Brotherhood.

He was released six years later as part of a prisoner exchange between the Syrian government and rebel group Ahrar al-Sham.

His movements after than are unclear, although he was pictured at a meeting between IS militants and Syrian tribal leaders.

An estimated 6,000 Jaysh al-Islam militants and their families are expected to withdraw from East Qalamoun, northwest of Syrian capital, to Jarablus in northern Aleppo province.

Syrian troops carrying out searches of militants at the settlement of Ar-Ruheiba in the Eastern Qalamoun Mountains in Rif Dimashq Governate have seized suicide belts and ammunition which jihadists tried to take with them during their withdrawal, the Syran Arab News Agency reports.

According to the Syrian Army, the militants’ withdrawal, agreed based on the same terms allowing fighters to withdraw from Eastern Ghouta, will continue for the next two or three days.

Last week militants concluded their withdrawal from the city of Dumayr, the makeshift capital and key supply center for militant positions in Eastern Qalamoun.

SANA has published photos of the weaponry surrendered by militants in the region. The weapons includes NATO anti-tank missiles, communications equipment, rocket propelled grenades, heavy machine guns, shoulder-fired MANPADS, truck-mounted heavy cannons, jeeps, trucks and even tanks.

The Syrian government significantly strengthened its control over the country following the liberation of the major population center of Eastern Ghouta northeast of Damascus earlier this month. In addition to a Daesh (ISIS)* which has been reduced to a few pockets of resistance in eastern Syria, militant opposition is concentrated in the Daara and Quneitra governates in the country’s southwest and near the Israeli and Jordanian borders, a pocket northeast of the city of Homs, and territories in the Idlib and Aleppo governates near the Turkish border. Northeastern Syria is controlled by the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces and their US allies.

Erdogan accuses US of arming Kurdish forces in Syria for free

The Turkish president claimed that roughly 5,000 trucks, all loaded with weaponry, were dispatched to northern Syria.

Speaking to the Turkish NTV news channel on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that the US and its allies are refusing to sell weapons to Ankara while choosing to provide them to Kurdish forces and most notably, for free.

“We cannot buy weapons from the US with our money, but unfortunately, the US and coalition forces give these weapons, this ammunition, to terrorist organizations for free,” he said. He reiterated that the threat predominantly originates from what he called “strategic partners.”

Erdogan went on to say that Washington goes continues to arm militants in Syria, sending in convoys full of weapons there. For instance, according to him, the US sent 5,000 trucks loaded with weapons to northern parts of the embattled country.

The US looks upon the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) as an ally in Syria, and to be more precise, a constituent part of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF has allegedly been trained, equipped and monitored by the Americans.

Last December, US President Donald Trump approved providing $393 million worth of weapons to what Washington calls partners in Syria – the YPG being one of them. Shortly thereafter, the US announced its intention to set up an all-Kurdish battalion comprising about 30,000 people, which was supposed to be deployed along the Turkish border.

The move was met with the utmost fury by the Turkish side, and on January 20, Ankara launched a military operation codenamed Olive Branch, tasked with ousting SDF troops from areas in northern Syria near the Turkish border. Ankara recognizes the group to be affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terror organization by the US, the EU and Turkey.

The latter accused on multiple occasions the SDF of maintaining child soldiers among its ranks and purposefully setting up positions and checkpoints in densely populated districts so that it could allegedly use civilians as human shields.

April, 20, 2018 - Israeli-Saudi Alliance behind War Crimes in Syria: Ex-US Senate Candidate (My opinion - great interview)
Israeli-Saudi Alliance behind War Crimes in Syria: Ex-US Senate Candidate - Tasnim News Agency

A former US Senate candidate said the Israeli-Saudi alliance has its “fingerprints all over illegal and criminal activities” in Syria.

“…It is chiefly this alliance (the US, Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia) against Assad, Iran, and Putin's Russia, that has resulted in at least 500,000 deaths and the displacement of millions of Syrians with the meter still running.
It is this alliance which has been using the American and Zionist media to falsely demonize Assad, Iran, and Russia, making false accusations about Assad and the employment of chemical weapons on his part, even while ignoring the support of the United States for the provable genocidal war crimes of Saudi Arabia in Yemen, the recent murder by Israel of over a thousand unarmed demonstrators in Gaza, and the regular employment by both the United States and Israel in recent years of white phosphorus and depleted uranium munitions in several regional conflicts,” Mark Dankof, who is also a broadcaster and pastor in San Antonio, Texas, told the Tasnim news agency.

He added, “…the Israeli-Saudi alliance has its fingerprints all over these illegal and criminal activities in Syria.”

Following is the full text of the interview:

Tasnim: Multiple places in Syria came under attack by US, British and French military forces after President Donald Trump ordered a military strike against the war-torn country early on Saturday. What is your take on the attack?

Dankof:
My take on the attack is that we may all fairly conclude that Mr. Trump's foreign policy has been irretrievably hijacked by the worst elements in the Neo-Conservative, Israel First fifth column in the American government and media, and that the President has every intention of continuing to facilitate the ongoing violations of international law and American Constitutional standards that has characterized his predecessors in terms of illegitimate military actions and interventions in the Middle East that are chiefly at the behest of Israel, the central banks, and the Saudi Arabian regime that knows its own survivability depends on the continuation of the American Petrodollar as the reserve currency of the world, even as this regime continues to pursue the support of Wahhabic terrorists and extremists to destroy Iran and Shiite Muslim interests in the region. The appointments of Nikki Haley as the American Ambassador to the UN, Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State, and John Bolton as the National Security Advisor to the President are classic examples of this hijacking, even as these appointments and the American war crimes in Syria underscore that Mr. Trump's "America First" campaign rhetoric in 2016 and his accompanying promises to get the United States out of Syria and these other Middle Eastern military interventions is now but a proven pack of lies.

The salient fact is this: The United States has had a long history of employing false flag incidents, provocations, and deliberately falsified media spins to sell and justify its ignition of a series of wars. The "Spanish sinking" of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor to begin the Spanish-American War; the Lusitania incident at the outset of World War I; the real circumstances of FDR's deliberate arrangements from October 1940 onward to compel the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor; the actions of the United States in South Korea from 1945-48 in support of the Rhee regime in Seoul which set the stage for the Korean War between 1950-53; the Operation Northwoods plan to start a war with Castro's Cuba in the early 1960s (proposed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and vetoed by President Kennedy); the phony Gulf of Tonkin resolution which began overt American military intervention in Vietnam; the October 1990 employment of Nayirah al-Sabah, daughter of the Kuwaiti Ambassador to the United States, to give false and rehearsed testimony to the American Congress directed and coached by the Hill and Knowlton public relations firm on how Iraqi soldiers were taking Kuwaiti children out of hospital incubators to induce death; the deliberately false claims of the American government as to who and what was behind the September 11, 2001 attacks; and the outlandish claims of George W. Bush and Colin Powell complete with falsified "intelligence," that the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 was necessary because of Saddam Hussein's possession of "Weapons of Mass Destruction," are all classic examples of this. These many lies in history preceded the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011, where Seymour Hersh and others have subsequently proven that the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey were importing, training, and supplying the Wahhabic extremists of every label being used against the Assad regime in an attempt to overthrow him. It is chiefly this alliance against Assad, Iran, and Putin's Russia, that has resulted in at least 500,000 deaths and the displacement of millions of Syrians with the meter still running. It is this alliance which has been using the American and Zionist media to falsely demonize Assad, Iran, and Russia, making false accusations about Assad and the employment of chemical weapons on his part, even while ignoring the support of the United States for the provable genocidal war crimes of Saudi Arabia in Yemen, the recent murder by Israel of over a thousand unarmed demonstrators in Gaza, and the regular employment by both the United States and Israel in recent years of white phosphorus and depleted uranium munitions in several regional conflicts. And it is this alliance which seeks war with Iran, for the express purpose of what John Bolton and his Zionist friends' term "regime change."

Tasnim: Many experts have described the attack as a “political show”. What do you think?

Dankof:
The attack may indeed be fairly characterized as a "political show." It is designed to demonstrate the President's primary fealty to the Zionist State of Israel, the central banking system extant since the post-World War II Bretton Woods conference, the gas and oil pipeline interests, and the military-industrial complex. It must also be said that this attack occurred without a scintilla of evidence that a chemical attack actually occurred, or that said the chemical attack was carried out by the Assad regime. The attack preempted the arrival of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and its scheduled examination of the site of the alleged attack for substantive evidence and evaluation of the Western claims of what had allegedly transpired, claims based on the allegations of the totally discredited White Helmets and the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, both front organizations for Western Neo-Conservative ideologues in American, British, and Israeli intelligence. Additionally, the attack took place without either the explicit authorization of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) or the issuance of the so-called Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) by the United States Congress. And two other critical questions about the American, British, and French charade must be asked 1): Why on earth would Bashar al-Assad risk a chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta when his military and their Russian allies were prevailing there and elsewhere in the restoration of stability in Syria under the control of the legitimate and sovereign government of that country? I saw a satirical post on social media a few days ago that underscores how ludicrous the claims of the United States, Britain, France, and the Zionist-Saudi alliance are on this key point. The post depicts a poster of Sun Tzu, author of The Art of War. Humorously, but on point, Sun Tzu supposedly says, "When your enemy is nearly defeated, and final victory is at hand, gas your own people so that nations greater than yours will intervene and destroy you." Secondly, 2) If as Trump and his advisors claim, the American strikes hit chemical weapons factories, why were there no poisonous chemical gases distributed among the population causing horrible injuries and a massive number of deaths? We hear Robert Fisk and Paul Craig Roberts, among others questioning all this, but nary a word in the Zionist-controlled American corporate media, where these ludicrous postulates are parroted by CNN and the Washington Post, and accepted at face value by an American public that should have figured out something since the Bush and Powell Circus in 2003. It is frightening.

Tasnim: How do you see the role of Israel and Saudi Arabia in the attack?

Dankof:
As previously indicated, the Israeli-Saudi alliance has its fingerprints all over these illegal and criminal activities in Syria. Former New York Times correspondent Stephen Kinzer fully acknowledges the truth of this. He states unequivocally that the latest American military machinations in Syria are designed to prevent peace and partnership among the governments of Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Lebanon, as the "United States-Israel-Saudi Arabia coalition" will not allow a peaceful flourishing of these countries and their political independence from this coalition's control. Kinzer underscores that from Washington's perspective, peace in Syria is the ultimate horror scenario. Peace would mean that Russia, Iran, and Assad have won in Syria. The United States, in Kinzer's words, is determined "to prevent that, regardless of the human cost."

Tasnim: In a tweet following the attack, President Trump said, “A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!” What was the mission?

Dankof:
Trump's statement of "Mission Accomplished" brings one back in memory to the infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech of George W. Bush on May 1st, 2003 on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. If by "Mission Accomplished," Mr. Trump is signaling that the United States is going to sink even deeper in economic debt, and political and military quicksand in Palestine, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen prior to an insane American-Israeli military strike on Iran, one may deem his latest war crime in Syria a success. To the rest of us, his actions are foreboding in terms of moving the United States closer to a global conflict that may also involve Russia and potentially China. This is aside from the real prospect posited by David Stockman, that the present national American debt of $21 trillion will stand at $40 trillion a decade from now, as the American Empire moves toward being but the latest Empire in history to fade into eventual eclipse for the usual reasons.

Tasnim: What would happen if the US and its allies bomb Syria again?

Dankof:
I do not believe that Vladimir Putin will stand by and allow the United States and its Israeli and Saudi allies to contravene the successful results of the Russian intervention on behalf of the sovereign government of Syria. I do not believe that he will stand by and watch an illegal and criminal American and Israeli military assault on Iran. He recognizes that to do so would be to signal his own unwillingness to defend Russian borders and Russian territory from the very real possibility of the NATO and American military buildup on his doorstep being used in an actual future invasion of his own country. Therefore, if the United States, France, and Britain continue to break international law with these actions in Syria, some response on his part will be inevitable. I recall that one of his government spokesmen said after the Trump strikes that "There will be consequences. We have a pre-arranged scenario in place." The Russian spokesman most pointedly did not spell out what that "pre-arranged scenario" entailed. Let us pray that Trump, his simian advisors, and his Israeli-Saudi allies are not reckless enough to risk finding out what that "pre-arranged scenario" is all about. But rest assured, the Russians, the Iranians, and the Chinese know what it is, and lie in wait.

Militants hand 30 armored vehicles to Russian military in Syria
MOSCOW, April 22. /TASS/. Russian servicemen have seized 30 armored vehicles, machine guns and mortar launches at militants’ weapons depot in the past 24 hours, Major General Yuri Yevtushenko, the chief of the Russian center for reconciliation of conflicting sides in Syria, said on Saturday.

"Under control of officers from the reconciliation center, extremists have handed 30 armored vehicles, three vans with large-caliber machine guns, six mortar launchers, three anti-tank guided missiles, 23 tactical missiles, 111 mines, 60 hand grenades, and more than 63,000 munitions for small arms to the Armed Forces of the Syrian Arab Republic," Yevtushenko said.

The Syrian government forces have taken control of the arsenals containing a large amount of munitions.
Over the past 24 hours, Russian military doctors provided medical services to 60 Syrians, including 15 children, Yevtushenko added.

Apart from that, 266 Syrian refugees returned to the Homs province, while 648 to the Deir ez-Zor province and 381 - to Eastern Ghouta. The Russian center for reconciliation of conflicting sides monitors resettlement of refugees from the Tell-Rifaat de-confliction zone to the city of Manbij in the Aleppo province. In the past 24 hours, 313 people were transported to that city with their belongings.

Thanks for Posting the photos, C.a.! This is one of the largest caches of weapons and ammo, thus far, although Assad's Army has been discovering vast amounts of the same in the last month or so, while they forge agreements with the terrorist and move them via buses to other areas away from the Syrian Capital. Add - the chemical weapons and large supplies of materials found to make bombs gives the impression - that Plan B was "to start the War - all over again"? Maybe, that was the main intended purpose of this latest round of missiles into Syria, by the UK/US and France? I also noticed, Russia is no longer holding back in expressing their opinion on current affairs.

In phone call with Putin, Macron asserts Western strikes on Syria were legitimate

The military strike against a number of targets in Syria carried out by the Western coalition including the US, the UK and France on April 14 was legitimate, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the Elysee Palace reported on Monday.

"President [Emmanuel Macron] spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone this morning [on Monday]. He [Macron] recalled the operation against the chemical potential of the Syrian regime conducted on April 14 together with the United States and the United Kingdom was legitimate in order to make sure that international law is observed," the Elysee Palace stated.

During the conversation with the Russian leader, Macron insisted that the West’s objective was to derail any schemes to produce and store chemical weapons. By the same token, Western countries claim that Damascus has covertly maintained this program contrary to Syria’s commitments to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). "It was necessary to pool our efforts to put an end to Syria’s chemical program and the [Syrian] regime’s repression of its own people," the Elysee Palace’s press service quotes Macron as saying.

Macron also said that Paris was ready to make active efforts to build dialogue on a peace settlement in the Syria, particularly in cooperation with Moscow.

"He [Macron] emphasized France’s determination to immediately start stepping up efforts through dialogue with all the powers concerned in order to launch a credible political process and intensify humanitarian activities to provide assistance to civilians," the statement reads, adding that the French president also highlighted his willingness to work together with Russia.

According to Macron, France will continue to take steps in the United Nations Security Council aimed at facilitating the search for ways to resolve the Syrian crisis. "In particular, work is underway in the UN Security Council that should seek to unite the global community. Together, we must take responsibility for bringing peace back to Syria," the Elysee Palace added.

The presidents of Russia and France discussed on Monday by phone the situation in Syria after an airstrike carried out by the United States, France and the United Kingdom in response to an alleged chemical attack in the city of Douma near Damascus, the Kremlin spokesman said.

Speaking with his French counterpart, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that the US-led coalition’s strikes against Syrian targets at the beginning of April were conducted in violation of international law and have complicated the situation in the Middle Eastern country.

He also noted the importance of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) conducting a thorough investigation on the ground in Syria.

Lavrov slams Macron’s remark on need to stay in Syria as colonial stance

The call of French President Emmanuel Macron not to withdraw forces from Syria even after the war on terror is over is reminiscent of a colonial stance, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters in Beijing.

"I heard that most recently French President Macron called on the United States not to pull out forces from Syria even when the last terrorist is killed or expelled from the country’s territory," Lavrov said in a commentary published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website.

The French leader said it was necessary to remain in the country "nearly on a permanent basis and to build a new Syria," Lavrov said, calling this a "colonial stance." Russia will ask France to clarify this position, he noted.

Mon Apr 23, 2018 - Rifts Widening among Terrorist Commanders after Handing over Weapons to Syrian Army in Eastern Qalamoun
Farsnews

A fresh wave of differences and rifts started among senior commanders of the terrorist groups after a number of militant groups handed over their heavy weapons and missile stockpiles to the Syrian Army in Eastern Qalamoun a couple of days ago, well-informed sources reported on Monday.

The sources said that former Saudi Commander of Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) Abdullah al-Muhaysini slammed Jeish al-Islam's surrender of its heavy weapons to the army in Eastern Qalamoun as a betrayal.

In the meantime, Head of Jeish al-Islam's political Headquarter Mohammad Aloush opposed other militant group's criticisms, saying that Jeish al-Islam was only one of the ten groups that delivered their depots of weapons and missiles to the army in Eastern Qalamoun.

Aloush further accused other militant groups, mainly the joint command that took part in reconciliation talks with the Syrian army and Russian military, of handing over of their weapons to Damascus forces first, adding that Ahrar al-Sham, Faylaq al-Rahman, Aswad al-Ashraqiyah, Ahrar al-Qaryatayn, Jeish al-Islam, Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (Al-Nusra Front), Jeish al-Tahrir al-Sham, Liwa Maqawir al-Sahara and Ahmad Abdu militants had endorsed the agreement with the army first.

The sources said that the arms and ammunition that the terrorists handed over to the army was the largest arsenal the army has thus far been received.

Almost 10,000 militants and their family members retreated from Eastern Qalamoun in Northern Damascus to be relocated to Idlib and Aleppo provinces on Saturday following an agreement with the Syrian Army.

The terrorists, deployed in the towns of al-Naseriyeh, al-Rahibeh and Jayroud, handed over their heavy and semi-heavy weapons and ammunition to the army after an evacuation agreement with Damascus over the evacuation of militants to Northern Syria.

Field sources reported that a sum of 17 buses delivered hundreds of terrorists and their family members from al-Rahibeh and Jayroud to al-Naseriyeh.

They said that 3,200 militants along with 6,800 of their family members are to be delivered to al-Naseriyeh and later move towards the town of Jarabulus in Northeastern Aleppo and Idlib province.

Upon the directives of President Bashar al-Assad, Defense Minister Gen. Ali Abdullah Ayoub, accompanied by army’s senior officers, conducted on Sunday a field visit to a number of military formations operating in eastern Qalamoun.

Gen. Ayoub highly appreciated the sacrifices of soldiers and their commanders, highlighting their role in expelling the terrorist groups and preserving Syria’s sovereignty and dignity.

The minister was briefed on samples of the large quantities of equipment and weapons handed over by terrorists which included tanks, armored vehicles, some equipped with heavy and medium machine guns, communications devices and advanced US-Western made jamming stations as well as various guns, rockets, shells and ammunition.

Gen. Ayoub also met with a number of the pilots, who, with high competence, contributed to defeating terrorists. He conveyed President al-Assad’s appreciation for their role in this war imposed on the Syrian state for more than seven years.

He thanked some crews of the vehicles for their high efficiency in intercepting and downing the missiles of tripartite US-British-French aggression, preventing the aggressors from achieving their targets.

23/04/2018 - German reporter claims Douma residents told him chemical weapons attack was staged (Video - German)
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...-told-him-chemical-weapons-attack-was-staged/

The German TV reporter Uli Gack visited a refugee camp, where about 20,000 people from East Ghouta and Douma have fled. According to the reporter, people from there were convinced that the chemical attack, which the Syrian government has been blamed for, was staged by terrorists.

According to the former Douma residents cited by the ZDF reporter, the attack site was a Daesh* command post. The terrorist group had placed chlorine gas balloons there on purpose, so that they would explode if struck by government air forces, facilitating allegations of a deliberate government chemical attack.

The reporter also said that people from the camp told him there had already been such provocations in Douma. They said that some kind of training, as the journalist called it, had taken place, when people had been exposed to gas. This was filmed and later distributed as evidence of the attack.

Gack wouldn’t vouch for every sentence of these reports, but he also pointed out that it seemed there was something in it. In his report from Syria, he also talked to the doctors from the hospital which was featured in the alleged video evidence of the attack, distributed by the White Helmets. The medical men told the journalists that they had noticed no signs of gas poisoning among the reported victims.

The reports from the refugee camp correspond to the recent findings of the Syrian government forces in the Damascus suburb of Douma. An ongoing search operation discovered a series of underground rooms that terrorists who were recently driven from the area allegedly used to make chemical weapons.

23/04/2018 - Rebels trained by Norway are planning to fight Syrian gov’t: report
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...way-are-planning-to-fight-syrian-govt-report/

The Norwegian-trained Syrian militia called the Revolutionary Command Army (MaT) meant to help quell Daesh* are now waging a war against the Syrian leadership and pro-government forces, the Norwegian daily Klassekampen reported.

According to Klassekampen, the rebel group is now openly fighting for a regime change in Syria, while also being an important part of the US’s efforts to prevent Iranian influence in the region.

In May 2016, it was announced that Norwegian soldiers were to be dispatched to Syria’s neighbor country Jordan to provide “training, counseling and operational support” to Syrian paramilitary groups fighting Daesh as part of the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve. In June 2016, the Norwegian parliament also green-lit similar missions in Syria itself.

While Norway’s Syria contribution was formally concluded in March this year, as the mandate formally expired, the exact extent and nature of Norway’s involvement was largely kept secret. MaT commander Muhannad al-Talla confirmed to Klassekampen that his group was trained by Norwegians in al-Tanf in southeastern Syria, where the US also has a base.

While both Prime Minister Erna Solberg and then-Defense Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide emphasized the mandate was to fight Daesh, ensuring that they “won’t endanger the peace process,” al-Talla claimed that his Western allies never concealed that his soldiers were to fight both terrorists and the Syrian government.

“From the very beginning, I’ve been completely aware that I’m fighting “the Islamic State” and the al-Assad forces. [Daesh] is not gone but is clearly weakened. Now the priority is the fight Assad,” al-Talla admitted to Klassekampen.

The al-Tanf Base is a strategic outpost along the main route between Damascus and Baghdad. There, the US has created a so-called 55-square-kilometer safety zone secured by US soldiers with the help of al-Talla’s units.

Within the zone, Assad-loyal troops have been bombed at least two times by US combat aircraft. At the same time, several rebel groups, including MaT took part in an offensive against government forces after Daesh’s withdrawal from eastern Syria. Insurgent Free Syrian Army (FSA) spokesman and counselor Ibrahim al-Idlibi confirmed to Klassekampen that Norway-trained “militia” took part in the struggle against Assad associated forces, such as the operation “The Country is Ours” carried out in May and June 2017.

While the Syrian government has managed to reclaim most of the country’s territory from Daesh and various rebel groups, MaT leader Muhannad al-Talla is by his own admission not ready to lay down arms.

“It is true that the current balance of power favors Assad. But we will never let him have peace. Even if he wins the war, we will continue to make his life sad for him,” al-Talla pledged.

According to Klassekampen, MaT and other West-supported paramilitary groups are part of a larger superpower game, where the US seeks to ensure control in the border area between Syria and Iran to stop further Iranian influence in the region.

According to FSA spokesman al-Idlibi, the goal of MaT and similar rebel groups is to “fight Iranian and Shia groups” in the area. Al-Idlibi pledged that the fight will continue “until the mission is complete.”

“At the moment, the goal is to control the main road between Damascus and Baghdad. Thus, we prevent land expansion for Iranian forces between Syria and Iraq through the desert,” al-Idlibi pointed out.

Both Muhannad al-Talla and the Norwegian Ministry of Defense denied that Norwegians ever participated in the fight against the Syrian government and its allies. Norway formally ceased its mission in Syria, with the Defense Ministry deciding to focus on Iraq.

Assad accuses US, UK, France of supporting militants since start of Syrian War

The US, the UK and France, which hit Syria, have supported militants since the start of the country’s civil war and failed to help Damascus in the anti-terror fight, Syrian President Bashar Assad said on Monday at a meeting with Senior Assistant to Iran’s Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari.

“Those states and groups, which are their pawns in countries of the region, have been supporting terrorists since the first day of war on Syria. Their recent aggression has not succeeded in stopping the war on terrorism, which will continue until control is recovered over all Syrian lands,” Assad said, as quoted by his presidential press service.

Ansari, in turn, said that this tripartite aggression was triggered by the victories of the Syrian government army and its allies against terrorists, since Western states concerned over the implications of Damascus’ military success.

All conditions created for return of Syria to 'unified, integral' state, Russia looks for help of SCO to assure it - Russian DM

All preconditions have been met towards the end of restoring Syria as a unified state, something which Russia can achieve with the help of strategic partners according to Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Speaking to defense ministers of other Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states on Tuesday, Shoigu expressed the belief that ‘all conditions have been created for the revival of Syria as a unified, integral state.’ ‘But to achieve this goal, it is necessary that not only Russia makes efforts, but also other members of the world community make them … We count on the support of the SCO member states,’ Russian DM added.

Russia as repeatedly stated that the social restoration and political reunification of Syria requires a joint military-diplomatic effort which takes into consideration the concerns of all parties – internal and external – involved.

after a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s foreign ministers in Beijing on Tuesday.

Lavrov went on to say that the US is “actively settling down” on the east bank of the Euphrates and “is not going to withdraw from there.” The Russian FM stated that this decision had been “encouraged” by French President Emmanuel Macron.

“This is obvious interference in internal affairs and violation of all conceivable norms of international law and proprieties,” Lavrov concluded.

When speaking about the discussion that took place at the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Toronto on Monday, Lavrov said that it had a clear “Russophobic” nature.

He also said that Russia will “defend its positions and wait patiently” until the G7 member states realise the “absolute deadlock and hopelessness” of such an approach.

23/04/2018 - BREAKING: Israeli strikes hit Syrian Army near Occupied Golan Heights
BREAKING: Israeli strikes hit Syrian Army near Occupied Golan Heights

An Israeli missile strike targeted a position for the Syrian Army in al-Kom town near the Occupied Golan Heights as the government forces crackdown on jihadi groups in the area.

According to a military source, the strike hit an artillery position in the bordering town but no casualties reported.

The Israeli aggression comes as the Syrian Army has been targeting Islamist militants in Al-Hamidiyah and al-Qahtaniyah towns. The bordering area between Syria and the Golan Heights are controlled by ultra-conservative Islamist groups whose members repeatedly receive medical treatment in Israel.

Nearly two weeks ago, Israeli fighter jets struck the Syrian T-4 military airbase in central Homs, killing several Army troops as well as Iranian military advisers.

Israeli Defense Minister warns Syria against using Russian missiles against Israel

The Israeli Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman told Ynet News on Tuesday that if Syria uses any Russian missiles against the Israeli military, they will act.

“What’s important to us is that the defensive weapons the Russians are giving Syria won’t be used against us,” Lieberman stated. “If they’re used against us, we’ll act against them,” he added.

Lieberman’s comments were made in response to a question about Syria acquiring the Russian-manufactured S-300 system.

Russian officials recently hinted that the S-300 system may be given to Syria in response to the US-led attack that was carried out on April 14th.

Syrian Army deploys Smerch heavy rocket artillery to shell multiple rebel strongholds across north Hama

On the night of the Monday to Tuesday, Syrian Army rocket artillery units shelled multiple rebel strongholds across the northern countryside of Hama province.

Specifically, the bombardment witnessed government forces deploy a number of BM-30 ‘Smerch’ self-propelled rocket launchers. The weapon is considered a ‘heavy’ artillery piece due to the fact it launches a 300-mm rocket with a quarter of a ton warhead.

According to military-affiliated source, Syrian Army rocket artillery struck militant tactical positions, storage sites and bases in and around the towns of Al-Latamenah, Kafr Zita and Zakat.

There are also reports that the government bombardment in Hama was supplemented with Russian airstrikes across other areas of northwest Syria, an update on which will be made as more information becomes available.

Russia capable of providing S-300 to Syria within one month — source

Russia is technically capable of providing its air defense systems S-300 to Syria within one month, a military-diplomatic source has told TASS, adding that for this the launchers already at the Defense Ministry’s disposal might be used after the required reconfiguration, a military-diplomatic source has told TASS.

According to the official, there are two options of delivering the S-300 to Syria. One is Russia may provide to Syria the export configuration of the air defense launchers. In that case Syria will get them in 18 to 24 months from now. The other possibility is the available systems may be retrieved from the Defense Ministry’s reserves. Those replaced by S-400 in the Russian army might be use, too.

“Naturally, the used S-300 systems that may be taken to Syria will have to be reconfigured to suit the standards of the Syrian air defense. This work may take about a month,” the source said.

TASS has no official confirmation of this.

Earlier, the daily Kommersant quoted its own sources as saying that Russia in the near future might start the delivery of S-300 Favorit air defense systems to Syria.

24/04/2018 - Syrian Army will likely raise new armored brigade with equipment captured in east Qalamoun – details
Syrian Army will likely raise new armored brigade with equipment captured in east Qalamoun - details

The Syrian Army will most likely raise a new armored brigade with heavy weapons recently acquired from surrendered rebel forces in Syria’s eastern Qalamoun region.

As video evidence shows, the Syrian Army has come into possession of dozens of armored vehicles – most of them main battle tanks – that are, for the most part, in very good condition.

Indeed, not only was such a great quantity of armored assets captured, but also a considerable amount of spare parts and sub-systems (engines, tracks, cannons, etc) necessary to keep such heavy equipment fully operational in the field.

Finally, it is important to note that key support vehicles – including Shilka self-propelled guns and tracked recovery vehicles – were also reclaimed in addition to dozens of main battle tanks, these representing organic support assets which need to exist within any armored detachment larger than a battalion.

Thus accounting for the fact that almost a brigade’s worth of armor (as far as wartime standards are concerned) has been captured in good condition along with plenty of spare parts and that support vehicles are among the seizure, it is hard to see that the newly acquired weapons will be dispersed among other units.

Instead it appears that the loot is ‘whole’ enough (so to speak) to raise a new formation entirely – something that the Syrian Army may very well do as part of an ongoing effort to buttress its forces in central Syria.

Three Saudi and Jordanian commanders of ISIL were killed in Southern Damascus on Tuesday after their command base came under heavy strikes by the Syrian Armed Forces.

The army's artillery and missile units and aircraft pounded ISIL's positions and movements in Hajar al-Aswad and al-Qadam regions and Yarmouk Refugee Camp.

Tue Apr 24, 2018 - More American, French Military Convoys Arrive in Northeastern Syria
Farsnews

The US and France have dispatched new military convoys to Hasaka province in Northeastern Syria, an Arab media outlet reported on Tuesday, adding that the American and French forces have increased their military movements in the Northeastern part of the war-held country.

Al-Manar TV network reported that a new American military column, including several vehicles, arrived in Hasaka city and later moved toward the town of al-Shadadi in Southern Hasaka.

The network quoted field sources as reporting that the US convoy of armored vehicles moved towards al-Shadadi from a military base North of Khabour Dam.

Al-Manar further said that three military vehicles under French flags entered a Kurdish militia base in al-Aliyeh silos region South of the town of Ra'as al-Ein in Northwestern Hasaka.

Another Arab media also reported earlier today that the US Army has set up a new military base in Hasaka province despite President Donald Trump's claims that Washington is resolved to withdraw forces from Syria.

Moraseloun news website quoted media activists as reporting that the US forces have embarked on setting up a new military bas between the towns of Tal Tamer and Tal Bidar in Hasaka province in Northeastern Syria.

It added that the US plans to set up a military airport near the base.

Donald Trump recently announced that Washington is determined to withdraw its military forces from Syria.

Tue Apr 24, 2018 - Syrian Army Repels Turkey-Backed Terrorists' Heavy Offensives in Western Aleppo
Farsnews

The Syrian Army troops fended off a heavy attack of the terrorists who reportedly were ordered by their Turkish backers to storm the government forces in Western Aleppo, an Arab media outlet reported on Tuesday.

Syria's al-Watan daily reported that the army warded off two heavy offensives of the terrorists in Western Aleppo, adding that the militants' attacks on government forces' positions West of the Research Center Building and Northwest of Rasoul Grand Mosque in the Western countryside of Aleppo city were both repelled.

The daily further said that the clashes between the army men and militants spilled over to Jam'iyat al-Zahra and New Aleppo neighborhoods.

In the meantime, the army's artillery and missile units pounded terrorists' positions in the settlements and villages of al-Mansoura, Kafr Hamra and al-Lairamoun, killing or wounding a number of militants and destroying their equipment.

Al-Watan further said that the militants' attacks on the government forces in Aleppo had been done at the order of Ankara to derail the public attention from growing tensions among terrorists groups in Western Aleppo.

Infighting among terrorist groups is on rise in Western Aleppo. Control over several regions in Northern Syria is exchanged between Syria's Tahrir Front and Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at as a result of fierce clashes between the two rival groups.

Tue Apr 24, 2018 - Arab Analyst: Turkey to Face Threat of Disintegration in Case of Lack of Co-operation with Syria, Iraq
Farsnews

Abdel Bari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm newspaper, warned that if Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues playing in the US court and resists cooperation with Syria and Iraq, his country will be faced with the danger of disintegration.

"The US and its western allies intend to pave the ground for Turkey's disintegration through disintegrating Syria," Atwan wrote on Tuesday, adding that Washington aims to disintegrate the West Asian countries to establish new states based on their race and ethnic backgrounds according to a plot which started 7 years ago.

He believes that Turkey cannot stand against this plot alone and should cooperate with its neighbors, Iraq and Syria, within a strong strategic framework.

"Unfortunately, Turkey is not after this cooperation; one day, it plays in the US court and another day, it plays in the court of the Russians and its allies, and then again it issues a statement and supports the tripartite US, French, British missile strikes against Syria," Atwan said.

He, meantime, said that declaration of early elections by Erdogan indicates the concerns that the ruling party feels of the current situation.

Erdogan called for a snap parliamentary and presidential election to be held on June 24, more than a year earlier than planned.

24 April، 2018 - Armenian Ambassador: Turkish acts in Syria are extension of what they committed against Armenians
https://sana.sy/en/?p=135373

Armenian Ambassador to Syria Arshak Poladian said that history repeats itself, and what Turkish politicians are perpetrating against the Syrian people nowadays is an extension of what they have done to the Armenian people in the past.

On April 24, the Armenians commemorate the anniversary of the genocide in which one and a half million Armenians were killed at the hands of the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923, in one of the most repulsive massacres in human history.

Speaking to SANA, the Ambassador said that although 103 years have passed since the Armenian genocide, the Armenian people are still struggling to regain their rights and their stolen territory, adding that the issue of the Armenians is presented in international forums and the Armenian people insist on recognition and condemnation of the genocide.

Poladian pointed out that the Armenian tragedy was a crime of annihilating an entire nation and erasing its heritage and civilization, as it was the result of a tendency to establish a Turkish empire from Anatolia to the easternmost part of Asia.

The historical area of Armenia is more than 300,000 square kilometers, which is ten times the size of the current Republic of Armenia.

22 April، 2016 - Prayers and candle procession in Damascus to mark anniversary of Armenian genocide
https://sana.sy/en/?p=75348

Prayers were held on Friday at the Armenian Orthodox Diocese of Damascus in Bab Sharqi area in Damascus to mark the 101st anniversary of the Armenian genocide carried out by the Ottomans which claimed the lives of over 1.5 million people.

Armenian Orthodox Bishop of Damascus Armash Nalbandian presided upon the prayers along with Armenian Catholic Bishop of Damascus Jospeh Arnaouti, and the prayers were followed by a candle procession from the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Square in Bab Sharqi to the Armenian Catholic Diocese in Bab Touma area.

Also marking this occasion, mass will be held at St. Serkis Church for the Armenian Orthodox in Bab Sharqi and Sultanat al-Alam Church for the Armenian Catholic in Bab Touma on Sunday, in addition to an event dedicated to the people of Syria at the Opera House.

The Armenian Genocide, carried out between 1915 and 1923, involved acts of murder, slaughter, and genocide against the Armenian people. In April 23 2015, Armenia canonized the 1.5 million victims of the genocide as saints, and three days later on the 26th of April the foundation stone for the monument dedicated to these victims was laid down in the square in Damascus which is named after them.

Tue Apr 24, 2018 - Russian Security Council: US Challenges UN System by Striking Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970204001130

The Assistant Secretary to Russian Security Council Alexander Venediktov said that the US attack against Syria is an example of disregard for the norms and principles of international law, and a challenge to the entire UN system.

The US joined by the UK and France carried out an attack on a number of targets in response the Douma that reportedly took place on April 7. The Syrian air defense managed to intercept 71 of 103 missiles launched by the members of the Western coalition, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, Sputnik reported.

Damascus has strongly denied the accusations and said that the Jeish al-Islam terror group staged the attack to justify potential foreign intervention in Syria.

The disagreements within the UN Security Council in relation to Syria have reflected in the council's recent failure to adopt either the Russian-drafted or the US-drafted resolutions on the alleged Duma chemical weapons attack.

Tue Apr 24, 2018 - Lavrov Stresses ‘Obvious Russophobic Connotations’ at G7 Foreign Ministers Summit
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970204001202

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday, commenting on the outcome of the meeting of G7 foreign ministers the Russophobic connotations in the work of the G7 are obvious, but Moscow is ready to patiently defend its position.

"As for the outcome of the meeting of foreign ministers in Toronto, of course, the Russophobic connotations there are obvious," he pointed out, TASS reported.

"We will patiently defend our position, wait until our partners realize that such policy is a dead end," the Minister added.

At the same time, he noted that the main issues that are important for the international community are being discussed in other formats.

"Political, military and political issues are discussed in the UN Security Council, generally within the UN, and economic issues, of course, cannot be resolved outside the framework of the Group of Twenty," Lavrov said.

Russia was the main topic on the agenda of the two-day meeting of the G7 foreign ministers, which was attended by representatives of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Japan and the United States, as well as High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

The countries could impose new sanctions against the Russian Federation because of the situation in Donbass, and accused Moscow of destabilizing the situation in the world, according to the statement.

The meeting of foreign ministers of the G7 countries was held in Toronto, Canada, on April 22-23. A meeting of G7 foreign and security ministers is held on April 23-24. Canada holds the G7 Presidency from January 1 to December 31, 2018.

Tue Apr 24, 2018 - US Playing with Fire in Syria: Russian Analyst
https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2018/04/24/1705587/us-playing-with-fire-in-syria-russian-analyst

A Russian political analyst described the recent US-led attack on Syria as “dangerous”, saying that the US adventurism in Syria is playing with fire.

“I do not think (another US-led attack on Syria) is going to happen. Russian troops were restrained, but it could change. And yes the US is a global force, but they do know well that they are playing with fire. We do know for sure that all American ships were a potential target for the Russian military this time,” Rustem Safronov, a Russian journalist, an analyst for Radio Sputnik, told Tasnim in an interview.

Following is the full text of the interview.

Tasnim: Multiple places in Syria came under attack by US, British and French military forces after President Donald Trump ordered a military strike against the war-torn country early on Saturday. What is your take on the attack?

Safronov:
I think it is an awkward attempt to show Russia and the entire world that the US is still the world’s only superpower. It attempts to intimidate the Syrian leadership that is winning a civil war with Iranian and Russian help and let the opposition have an upper hand in future negotiations. But all of these war games are very dangerous and need to be stopped unless Trump wants to start the third world war.

Tasnim: Moscow has “irrefutable proof” that the alleged chemical incident in Syria’s Douma was a “false-flag attack,” orchestrated by UK security services with support from the United States, the Russian envoy to the OPCW said. What do you think?

Safronov:
I think extremists in Syria and their western sponsors did not assume the possibility that Russians and the rest of the world may find out the truth. They just wanted to create a formal reason for western powers to attack Syria because all extremist groups are in desperate situation from the military point of view.
After the liberation of Douma, Syrian authorities had a chance to show the world that the so-called gas attack was fake, but I have serious doubts that it would change anything in the West.

They would say Russian and Syrian troops have cleaned everything up to destroy the evidence and so on. They do not care about the facts on the ground. If they would really want to find out the truth, they should allow an independent probe into the incident. They should not have bombed the Arab country before the UN Security Council carried out a real and independent investigation.

Tasnim: What would happen if the US and its allies bomb Syria again?

Safronov:
I do not think it is going to happen. Russian troops were restrained, but it could change. And yes the US is a global force, but they do know well that it is playing with fire. We do know for sure that all American ships were a potential target for the Russian military this time.

I hope Trump and Putin would meet in the near future and defuse the situation. It would help prevent an escalation of the situation. It would not stop Syrian conflict but would help avoid at least another global war.

Scores of IEDs dismantled, militants’ legal status settled in Rahiba – Syrian Arab News Agency

The legal status of a number of militants in al-Rhaiba town in eastern Qalamoun was settled on Wednesday after they handed over their arms to authorities.

Speaking to SANA’s reporter, a member at the local reconciliation committee said that after the process of removing the terrorists and their families ended and terms of the agreement to hand over heavy and medium weapons to the Syrian Arab Army were implemented, the legal status
of the militants was settled today after the handover of light weapons.
The status of the wanted persons and draft dodgers will also be settled.

A number of those who had their legal status settled said that terrorists tried to force them to leave the area and head north, but they insisted to stay in their towns and have their status settled.

The reporter said that army’s engineering units seized hundreds of IEDs inside terrorists’ dens during the sweeping operation in the agricultural lands and the area surrounding al-Rahiba town in order to protect the lives of civilians.

An officer at the Syrian Arab Army told SANA that the engineering units carried out the removal and dismantlement of IEDs from the town of al-Rahiba, which were planted by the terrorists, after the terrorists and their families who refused the reconciliation agreement exited to northern Syria, indicating that the weights of the IEDs ranged from 10 to 50 kg.

Over the past four days, 124 buses carrying hundreds of terrorists and their families left eastern Qalamoun area to northern Syria in implementation of an agreement announced last Friday in preparation for declaring it free of terrorism.

Wed Apr 25, 2018 - Top General Tells Israel: US President Is Not Pulling Troops out from Syria
Farsnews

Weeks after President Donald Trump stated that US troops would be pulled out from Syria “very soon”, now, the military’s Central Command, Gen. Joseph Votel stressed that Washington has no “immediate plans” to leave the Arab country.

The head of the US military’s Central Command (CENTOM), Gen. Joseph Votel, arrived in Israel on Monday amid concerns that President Donald Trump will go through with plans to withdraw American forces from Syria, Arutz Sheva 7 reported.

According to the news website, citing a diplomatic source, Votel visited Israel to reassure the head of the National Security Council, the IDF Chief of Staff and other senior defense officials that Americans have no “immediate plans” to leave Syria, and will continue supporting Tel Aviv’s means of maintaining security and stability on its border.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly voiced his concerns that if US troops leave Syria, it would enable Israel’s enemies to gain a foothold in the area.

The US President has in recent weeks created uncertainty over the future of the US role in Syria. Trump had stated that Washington would withdraw from Syria “soon”, but no deadline for any such move has been announced.

Later, Trump suggested the US could extend its military presence in Syria if other Arab states, like Saudi Arabia, paid for it.

But, Ambassador to UN Nikki Haley has said that the US will not pull its troops out of Syria until its goals are accomplished there.

Wed Apr 25, 2018 - Russian General Staff: Syria to Receive New Missile Defense Systems in Near Future
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970205001451

Head of the Main Operations Department at Russia’s General Staff Colonel General Sergei Rudskoi said at a briefing on Wednesday Syria will receive new missile defense systems in the near future and Russian experts will teach Syrians to use them.

"Russian experts will continue to train Syrian military servicemen, particularly teaching them to use the new missile defense systems that are planned to be delivered to Syria in the near future," he said, TASS reported. However, the general did not reveal any details concerning those missile systems.

Rudskoi stated earlier that Russia was ready to review the possibility of providing the S-300 systems to Damascus following the air strikes carried out by the United States, the United Kingdom and France.

Most of the missiles fired by the three countries were destroyed by the S-125, Osa and Kvadrat missile systems, which were designed in the Soviet Union about 40 years ago but were upgraded with the assistance of Russian experts, according to Rudskoi.

"Syria’s Defense Ministry has thoroughly analyzed the outcome of the missile attack and ordered a number of changes to be made in order to improve the country’s missile defenses," the Russian General pointed out.

Wed Apr 25, 2018 - US, S. Arabia, Turkey Negotiating on Raqqa Power Transition to Jeish Al-Islam Terrorists
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970205000867

Washington, Riyadh and Ankara are reportedly holding talks to hand over the Northeastern city of Raqqa to Jeish al-Islam terrorists amid Turkey's opposition to the presence of the Kurdish militias in Northern Syria.

"The US-led coalition is negotiating with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, while Washington has also started talks with Turkey to hand over Raqqa to the Saudi-backed Jeish al-Islam terrorist group," the Arabic-language al-Hadas News quoted Kurdish sources as saying on Wednesday.

The sources noted that in the second step, the Arab tribes in Deir Ezzur will receive control of the regions on Eastern Euphrates in an operation to be funded by Saudi Arabia and Qatar and backed by the US.

"This is while the Arab forces will quit the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to join the Saudi Pact in Syria," the report added.

"Meantime, an Arab-Kurdish army will be formed to control other Kurdish regions," the sources said.

In a relevant development on Sunday, a Kurdish media outlet reported that the Turkish Army continued sheltering hundreds of militants and their family members in a region in Northwestern Aleppo after the terrorist group left Eastern Ghouta and Eastern Qalamoun for Northern Syria a couple of days ago.

Hawar news reported that the Turkish troops and Ankara-backed militants expelled the entire residents of the village of Bar A'afa in Shera region in Afrin to pave the ground for settling the Eastern Ghouta terrorists in the region.

Hawar news further said that the Ankara forces plan to settle 1,700 militants and their family members who have left the town of al-Dumayr in Eastern Qalamoun in the houses of the locals who have been expelled from Jandaris region in Afrin.

The London-based pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed on Monday that Faylaq al-Rahman Commander Abdul Naser Shamir and several more senior commanders of the terrorist group that had left Eastern Ghouta after sustaining heavy defeats in the fight with the Syrian Army have been relocated in Bolboleh region in the Northern countryside of the town of Afrin near border with Turkey.

The Turkish troops' move in replacing local population with the militant commanders has enraged the local residents.

In the meantime, over 150 families of Eastern Ghouta terrorists recently were settled in residential units in the town of Afrin after the Turkish troops prevented the local population from returning to their houses.

Faylaq al-Rahman is affiliated to the Al-Nusra Front that is backed by Turkey. Yet, the Turkey-backed militants have treated other militant groups like Jeish Al-Islam that are backed by Saudi Arabia differently, forcing them to surrender their weapons and stay in camps.

25/04/2018 - New rumors surfacing that Saudi-backed forces will take over Raqqa
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...hat-saudi-backed-forces-will-take-over-raqqa/

Several rumors have recently surfaced from pro-opposition activists claiming that the Saudi-backed Jaysh Al-Islam forces will be given the Al-Raqqa Governorate.

The pro-opposition activists allege that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are in talks to possibly have the Syrian Democratic Forces to handover Al-Raqqa to an Arab group.

While this is all rumors, a Syrian military source in Damascus told Al-Masdar that this could be a real possibility, as it would halt a potential military operation from Turkey.

Jaysh Al-Islam was recently evacuated to the border-city of Jarabulus, which is located near the Al-Raqqa Governorate’s provincial border.

The group is the largest Saudi-backed force in Syria, with much of their leadership currently in Riyadh.

The Russian Defense Ministry has announced that the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had confirmed that there were no chemical weapons found at the Barzeh research center in Damascus despite the US officials’ claims.

The ministry further noted that thousands of people could have died if there was any chemical weapon on the sites that were attacked by the US-led coalition.

The Syrian and Russian navies held military drills off the coast of Syria last week, as they continue to boost their ties in the region.
As shown in the footage below, the Syrian Petya class frigate (decommissioned) was stricken and sunk by anti-ship missiles during the military exercises.

25 April 2018 - Douma: Part 1 - Deception In Plain Sight
Media Lens - Douma: Part 1 - Deception In Plain Sight

UK corporate media are under a curious kind of military occupation. Almost all print and broadcast media now employ a number of reporters and commentators who are relentless and determined warmongers. Despite the long, unarguable history of US-UK lying on war, and the catastrophic results, these journalists instantly confirm the veracity of atrocity claims made against Official Enemies, while having little or nothing to say about the proven crimes of the US, UK, Israel and their allies. They shriek with a level of moral outrage from which their own government is forever spared. They laud even the most obviously biased, tinpot sources blaming the 'Enemy', while dismissing out of hand the best scientific researchers, investigative journalists and academic sceptics who disagree.

Anyone who challenges this strange bias is branded a 'denier', 'pro-Saddam', 'pro-Gaddafi, 'pro-Assad'. Above all, one robotically repeated word is generated again and again: 'Apologist... Apologist... Apologist'.

Claims of a chemical weapons attack on Douma, Syria on April 7, offered yet another textbook example of this reflexive warmongering.

Remarkably, the alleged attack came just days after US president Donald Trump had declared of Syria:'

'I want to get out. I want to bring our troops back home. I want to start rebuilding our nation.'
The 'mainstream' responded as one, with instant certainty, exactly as they had in response to atrocity and other casus belli claims in Houla, Ghouta, Khan Sheikhoun and many other cases in Iraq (1990), Iraq (1998), Iraq (2002-2003), Libya and Kosovo.

Once again, the Guardian editors were sure: there was no question of a repetition of the fake justifications for war to secure non-existent Iraqi WMDs, or to prevent a fictional Libyan massacre in Benghazi. Instead, this was 'a chemical gas attack, orchestrated by Bashar al-Assad, that left dead children foaming at the mouth'.

Simon Tisdall, the Guardian's assistant editor, had clearly decided that enough was enough:

'It's time for Britain and its allies to take concerted, sustained military action to curb Bashar al-Assad's ability to murder Syria's citizens at will.'
This sounded like more than another cruise missile strike. But presumably Tisdall meant something cautious and restrained to avoid the terrifying risk of nuclear confrontation with Russia:

'It means destroying Assad's combat planes, bombers, helicopters and ground facilities from the air. It means challenging Assad's and Russia's control of Syrian airspace. It means taking out Iranian military bases and batteries in Syria if they are used to prosecute the war.'
But surely after Iraq - when UN weapons inspectors under Hans Blix were prevented from completing the work that would have shown that Saddam Hussein possessed no WMD – 'we' should wait for the intergovernmental Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons inspectors to investigate. After all, as journalist Peter Oborne noted of Trump's air raids:

'When the bombing started the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was actually in Damascus and preparing to travel to the area where the alleged chemical attacks took place.'

Oborne added:
'Had we wanted independent verification on this occasion in Syria surely we ourselves would have demanded the OPCW send a mission to Douma. Yet we conspicuously omitted to ask for it.'
Tisdall was having none of it:
'Calls to wait for yet another UN investigation amount to irresponsible obfuscation. Only the Syrian regime and its Russian backers have the assets and the motivation to launch such merciless attacks on civilian targets. Or did all those writhing children imagine the gas?'
The idea that only Assad and the Russians had 'the motivation' to launch a gas attack simply defied all common sense. And, as we will see, it was not certain that children had been filmed 'writhing' under gas attack. Tisdall's pro-war position was supported by just 22% of British people.

Equally gung-ho, the oligarch-owned Evening Standard, edited by veteran newspaperman and politically impartial former Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, headlined this plea on the front page:

'HIT SYRIA WITHOUT A VOTE, MAY URGED'
Freedland could argue that the case for blaming Assad was clear, if he liked, but he absolutely could not argue that disagreeing was a sign of denialist delusion.

Time and again, we encounter these jaw-dropping efforts to browbeat the reader with fake certainty and selective moral outrage. In his piece, Freedland linked to the widely broadcast social media video footage from a hospital in Douma, which showed that Assad was guilty of 'inflicting a death so painful the footage is unbearable to watch'. But when we actually click Freedland's link and watch the video, we do not see anyone dying, let alone in agony, and the video is not in fact unbearable to watch. Like Tisdall's claim on motivation, Freedland was simply declaring that black is white.

But many people are so intimidated by this cocktail of certainty and indignation – by the fear that they will be shamed as 'denialists' and 'apologists' – that they doubt the evidence of their own eyes. In 'mainstream' journalism, expressions of moral outrage are offered as evidence of a fiery conviction burning within. In reality, the shrieks are mostly hot air.

In the Observer, Andrew Rawnsley also deceived in plain sight by blaming the Syrian catastrophe on Western inaction:
'Syria has paid a terrible price for the west's disastrous policy of doing nothing'.
However terrible media reporting on the 2003 Iraq war, commentators did at least recognise that the US and Britain were involved. We wrote to Rawnsley, asking how he could possibly not know about the CIA's billion dollar per annum campaign to train and arm fighters, or about the 15,000 high-tech, US anti-tank missiles sent to Syrian 'rebels' via Saudi Arabia.

Rawnsley ignored us, as ever.

Just three days after the alleged attack, the Guardian's George Monbiot was asked about Douma:
'Don't you smell a set up here though? Craig Murray doesn't think Assad did it.'
Monbiot replied:
'Then he's a fool.'
Craig Murray responded rather more graciously:
'I continue to attract attacks from the "respectable" corporate and state media. I shared a platform with Monbiot once, and liked him. They plainly find the spirit of intellectual inquiry to be a personal affront.'
Monbiot tweeted back:
'I'm sorry Craig but, while you have done excellent work on some issues, your efforts to exonerate Russia and Syria of a long list of crimes, despite the weight of evidence, are foolish in the extreme.'
Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland, formerly the paper's comment editor, also poured scorn on the need for further evidence:
'Besides, how much evidence do we need?... To all but the most committed denialists and conspiracists, Assad's guilt is clear.'
The idea that Murray's effort has been 'to exonerate Russia and Syria of a long list of crimes' is again so completely false, so obviously not what Murray has been doing. But it fits perfectly with the corporate media theme of Cold War-style browbeating: anyone challenging the case for US-UK policy on Syria is an 'apologist' for 'the enemy'.

If Britain was facing imminent invasion across the channel from some malignant superpower, or was on the brink of nuclear annihilation, the term 'apologist' might have some merit as an emotive term attacking free speech – understandable in the circumstances. But Syria is not at war with Britain; it offers no threat whatsoever. If challenging evidence of Assad's responsibility is 'apologism', then why can we not describe people accepting that evidence as 'Trump apologists', or 'May apologists', or 'Jaysh al-Islam apologists'? The term really means little more than, 'I disagree with you' – a much more reasonable formulation.

As Jonathan Cook has previously commented:
'Monbiot has repeatedly denied that he wants a military attack on Syria. But if he then weakly accepts whatever narratives are crafted by those who do – and refuses to subject them to any meaningful scrutiny – he is decisively helping to promote such an attack.'
Why Are These Academics Allowed?

The cynical, apologetic absurdity of questioning the official narrative has been a theme across the corporate media. In a Sky News discussion, Piers Robinson of Sheffield University urged caution in blaming the Syrian government in the absence of verifiable evidence.

In a remarkable response, Alan Mendoza, Executive Director of the Henry Jackson Society, screeched at him:
'Who do you think did it? Was it your mother who did it?'
Again, exact truth reversal – given the lack of credible, verified evidence, it was absurd to declare Robinson's scepticism absurd.

Mendoza later linked to an article attacking Robinson, and asked:
'Why are UK universities allowing such "academics" - and I use the term advisedly because they are not adhering to any recognised standard when promoting material with no credible sourcing, and often with no citation at all - to work in their institutions?'
In 2011, Mendoza wrote in The Times of Nato's 'intervention' in Libya:
'The action in Libya is a sign that the world has overcome the false lessons [sic] of Iraq or of "realism" in foreign policy.'
The UN had 'endorsed military action to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding'.

In fact, the unfolding 'humanitarian catastrophe' was fake news; Mendoza's mother needed no alibi. A September 9, 2016 report on the war from the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons commented:
'Despite his rhetoric, the proposition that Muammar Gaddafi would have ordered the massacre of civilians in Benghazi was not supported by the available evidence...'.
The Times launched a shameful, front-page attack on Robinson and other academics who are not willing to accept US-UK government claims on trust. The Times cited Professor Scott Lucas of Birmingham University:
'Clearly we can all disagree about the war in Syria, but to deny an event like a chemical attack even occurred, by claiming they were "staged", is to fall into an Orwellian world.'
In similar vein, in a second Guardian comment piece on Douma, Jonathan Freedland lamented: 'we are now in an era when the argument is no longer over our response to events, but the very existence of those events'. Echoing Soviet propaganda under Stalin, Freedland warned that this was indicative of an intellectual and moral sickness:
'These are symptoms of a post-truth disease that's come to be known as "tribal epistemology", in which the truth or falsity of a statement depends on whether the person making it is deemed one of us or one of them.'
And this was, once again, truth reversal – given recent history in Iraq and Libya, it was Lucas and Freedland who were falling into an Orwellian fantasy world. Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens made the obvious point:
'Given the folly of the British government over Iraq and Libya, and its undoubted misleading of the public over Iraq, it is perfectly reasonable to suspect it of doing the same thing again. Some of us also do not forget the blatant lying over Suez, and indeed the Gulf of Tonkin'
Hitchens clearly shares our concern at media performance, particularly that of the Guardian, commenting:
'Has Invasion of the Bodysnatchers been re-enacted at Guardian HQ? Whatever the dear old thing's faults it was never a Pentagon patsy until recently. Rumours of relaunch as The Warmonger's Gazette, free toy soldier with every issue.'
Hitchens questioned Guardian certainty on Douma:
'But if facts are sacred, how can the Guardian be so sure, given that it is relying on a report from one correspondent 70 miles away, and another one 900 miles away.. and some anonymous quotes from people whose stories it has no way of checking?'
He added:
'The behaviour of The Guardian is very strange & illustrates just what a deep, poorly-understood change in our politics took place during the Blair years. We now have the curious spectacle of the liberal warmonger, banging his or her jingo fist on the table, demanding airstrikes.'
Indeed, in discussing the prospects for 'intervention' in the Guardian, Gaby Hinsliff, former political editor of the Observer, described the 2013 vote that prevented Britain from bombing Syria in August 2013 as 'that shameful night in 2013'. Shameful? After previous 'interventions' had completely wrecked Iraq and Libya on false pretexts, and after the US regime had been told the evidence was no 'slam dunk' by military advisers?

In the New Statesman, Paul Mason offered a typically nonsensical argument, linking to the anti-Assad website, Bellingcat:

'Despite the availability of public sources showing it is likely that a regime Mi-8 helicopter dropped a gas container onto a specific building, there are well-meaning people prepared to share the opinion that this was a "false flag", staged by jihadis, to pull the West into the war. The fact that so many people are prepared to clutch at false flag theories is, for Western democracies, a sign of how effective Vladimir Putin's global strategy has been.'
Thus, echoing Freedland's reference to 'denialists and conspiracists', sceptics can only be idiot victims of Putin's propaganda. US media analyst Adam Johnson of FAIR accurately described Mason's piece as a 'mess', adding:
'I love this thing where nominal leftists run the propaganda ball for bombing a country 99 yards then stop at the one yard and insist they don't support scoring goals, that they in fact oppose war.'
Surprisingly, the Bellingcat website, which publishes the findings of 'citizen journalist' investigations, appears to be taken seriously by some very high-profile progressives.

In the Independent, Green Party leader Caroline Lucas also mentioned the Syrian army 'Mi-8' helicopters. Why? Because she had read the same Bellingcat blog as Mason, to which she linked:
'From the evidence we've seen so far it appears that the latest chemical attack was likely by Mi-8 helicopters, probably from the forces of Syria's murderous President Assad.'
On Democracy Now!, journalist Glenn Greenwald said of Douma:
'I think that it's—the evidence is quite overwhelming that the perpetrators of this chemical weapons attack, as well as previous ones, is the Assad government...
This was an astonishing comment. After receiving fierce challenges (not from us), Greenwald partially retracted, tweeting:
'It's live TV. Something [sic – sometimes] you say things less than ideally. I think the most likely perpetrator of this attack is Syrian Govt.'
We wrote to Greenwald asking what had persuaded him of Assad's 'likely' responsibility for Douma. (Twitter, April 10, direct message)

The first piece of evidence he sent us (April 12) was the Bellingcat blog mentioning Syrian government helicopters cited by Mason and Lucas. Greenwald also sent us a report from Reuters, as well as a piece from 2017, obviously prior to the alleged Douma event.

This was thin evidence indeed for the claim made. In our discussion with him, Greenwald then completely retracted his claim (Twitter, April 12, direct message) that there was evidence of Syrian government involvement in the alleged attack. Yes, it's true that people 'say things less than ideally' on TV, but to move from 'quite overwhelming' to 'likely', to declaring mistaken the claim that there is evidence of Assad involvement, was bizarre.

Political analyst Ben Norton noted on Twitter:
'Reminder that Bellingcat is funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), which is funded by the US government and is a notorious vehicle for US soft power'
Norton added: 'It acts like an unofficial NATO propagandist, obsessively focusing on Western enemies.'

And:
'Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins is a fellow at the Atlantic Council, which is funded by NATO, US, Saudi, UAE, etc.
And:
'According to Meedan, which helps fund Bellingcat — along with the US government-funded NED — Bellingcat also works with the group Syrian Archive, which is funded by the German government, to jointly produce pro-opposition "research"'
And:
'The board of the directors for Meedan, which funds Bellingcat, includes Muna AbuSulayman—who led the Saudi oligarch's Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation—and Wael Fakharany—who was the regional director of Google in Egypt & North Africa (US gov. contractor Google also funds Bellingcat)'
And:
'Bellingcat—which gets money from the US gov-funded NED and fixates obsessively on Western enemies—claims to be nonpartisan and impartial, committed to exposing all sides, but a website search shows it hasn't published anything on Yemen since February 2017.'
Although Bellingcat is widely referenced by corporate journalists, we are unaware of any 'mainstream' outlet that has seriously investigated the significance of these issues for the organization's credibility as a source of impartial information. As we will see in Part 2, corporate journalism is very much more interested in challenging the credibility of journalists and academics holding power to account.

26 April 2018 - Douma: Part 2 - 'It Just Doesn't Ring True'
Media Lens - Douma: Part 2 - 'It Just Doesn't Ring True'

Jonathan Freedland's 'committed denialists and conspiracists', and Paul Mason's victims of Putin's 'global strategy' clutching at 'false flag theories', presumably include Lord West, former First Sea Lord and Chief of Defense Intelligence. In an interview with the BBC, West commented:

'President Assad is in the process of winning this civil war. And he was about to take over and occupy Douma, all that area. He'd had a long, long, hard slog, slowly capturing that whole area of the city. And then, just before he goes in and takes it all over, apparently he decides to have a chemical attack. It just doesn't ring true.

'It seems extraordinary, because clearly he would know that there's likely to be a response from the allies – what benefit is there for his military? Most of the rebel fighters, this disparate group of Islamists, had withdrawn; there were a few women and children left around. What benefit was there militarily in doing what he did? I find that extraordinary. Whereas we know that, in the past, some of the Islamic groups have used chemicals [see here], and of course there would be huge benefit in them labelling an attack as coming from Assad, because they would guess, quite rightly, that there'd be a response from the US, as there was last time, and possibly from the UK and France...

'We do know that the reports that came from there were from the White Helmets - who, let's face it, are not neutrals [see here]; you know, they're very much on the side of the disparate groups who are fighting Assad – and also the World Health Organisation doctors who are there. And again, those doctors are embedded in amongst the groups – doing fantastic work, I know – but they're not neutral. And I am just a little bit concerned, because as we now move to the next phase of this war, if I were advising some of the Islamist groups – many of whom are worse than Daish - I would say: "Look, we've got to wait until there's another attack by Assad's forces – particularly if they have a helicopter overhead, or something like that, and they're dropping barrel bombs – and we must set off some chlorine because we'll get the next attack from the allies...." And it is the only way they've got, actually, of stopping the inevitable victory of Assad.'

Another senior military figure, Major General Jonathan Shaw, former commander of British forces in Iraq (his responsibilities have included chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear policy), was shut down by a Sky News journalist 30 seconds after he started saying the wrong thing:

'The debate that seems to be missing from this... was what possible motive might have triggered Syria to launch a chemical attack at this time in this place? You know, the Syrians are winning... Don't take my word for it. Take the American military's word. General Vergel [sic – Votel], the head of Centcom - he said to Congress the other day, "Assad has won this war, and we need to face that".

'Then you've got last week the statement by Trump - or tweet by Trump - that America has finished with ISIL and we were going to pull out soon, very soon.

'And then suddenly you get this...'

At which point Shaw's sound was cut and the interview terminated.
Peter Hitchens asked:
'Can anyone tell me what was so urgent on Sky News, which made it necessary to cut this distinguished general off in mid-sentence?'

Sky News gave their version of events here, claiming they had to take an ad break.

Also taking a more cautious view than Tisdall, Freedland, Rawnsley, Lucas, Mendoza, Monbiot, Mason and the Guardian editors (see Part 1), is James 'Mad Dog' Mattis, the US Secretary of Defence, who said:

'I believe there was a chemical attack and we are looking for the actual evidence.'

Only 'looking' for actual evidence?

'As each day goes by — as you know, it is a non-persistent gas — so it becomes more and more difficult to confirm it.'

The evidence clearly, then, had not yet been found and the claims had not yet been confirmed.

Peter Ford, former British ambassador to Syria, voiced scepticism:

'The Americans have failed to produce any evidence beyond what they call newspaper reports and social media, whereas Western journalists who have been in Douma [see below] and produced testimony from witnesses – from medics with names so they can be checked – to the effect that the Syrian version is correct.'

Before Trump's latest attack, Scott Ritter, former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq, made the point that mattered:

'The bottom line, however, is that the United States is threatening to go to war in Syria over allegations of chemical weapons usage for which no factual evidence has been provided. This act is occurring even as the possibility remains that verifiable forensic investigations would, at a minimum, confirm the presence of chemical weapons...'

Even a BBC journalist managed some short-lived scepticism. Riam Dalati tweeted:

'Sick and tired of activists and rebels using corpses of dead children to stage emotive scenes for Western consumption.
'Then they wonder why some serious journos are questioning part of the narrative.
'#Douma #ChemicalAttack #EasternGhouta'

The tweet was quickly deleted.

Craig Murray wrote:

'For the FCO, I lived and worked in several actual dictatorships. The open bias of their media presenters and the tone of their propaganda operations was - always - less hysterical than the current output of the BBC. The facade is not crumbling, it's tumbling.'

Robert Fisk – Hypoxia, Not Gas

Veteran Middle East journalist Robert Fisk visited Douma and reported his findings in the Independent. He spoke to a senior doctor who works in the clinic where victims of the alleged chemical attack had been brought for treatment. Dr Rahaibani told Fisk what had happened that night:

'I was with my family in the basement of my home three hundred metres from here on the night but all the doctors know what happened. There was a lot of shelling [by government forces] and aircraft were always over Douma at night – but on this night, there was wind and huge dust clouds began to come into the basements and cellars where people lived. People began to arrive here suffering from hypoxia, oxygen loss. Then someone at the door, a "White Helmet", shouted "Gas!", and a panic began. People started throwing water over each other. Yes, the video was filmed here, it is genuine, but what you see are people suffering from hypoxia – not gas poisoning.'

Not gas poisoning? Why was this not immediately headline news in the 'mainstream' press and on BBC News? In fact, almost throughout the 'MSM', it was quietly buried. The glaring exception was an article in The Times with the pejorative headline:

'Critics leap on reporter Robert Fisk's failure to find signs of gas attack'

The piece suggested that there were big question marks over Fisk's record:

'Fisk is no stranger to controversy.'

A list of Fisk's 'controversies' followed. There was no mention that, among many accolades, the Arabic-speaking Fisk has won Amnesty International press awards three times, the Foreign Reporter of the Year award seven times and the Journalist of the Year award twice.

In an article published by openDemocracy, Philip Hammond, professor of media and communications at London South Bank University, observed that:

'In seeking to close down such dissident thought, Times journalists are acting, not as neutral defenders of truth, but as partisan advocates for a particular understanding of the war.'

A Guardian article by diplomatic editor Patrick Wintour and world affairs editor Julian Borger commented of Douma:

'A group of reporters, many favoured by Moscow, were taken to the site on Monday. They either reported that no weapon attack had occurred or that the victims had been misled by the White Helmets civilian defence force into mistaking a choking effect caused by dust clouds for a chemical attack.'

Not only was Fisk not mentioned by name, he was lumped in with reporters 'favoured by Moscow'. Jonathan Cook's observation said it all:

'They managed the difficult task of denigrating his account while ignoring the fact that he was ever there.'

In The Intercept, columnist Mehdi Hasan wrote an impassioned open letter addressed to 'those of you on the anti-war far left who have a soft spot for the dictator in Damascus: Have you lost your minds? Or have you no shame?' The piece began:

'Dear Bashar al-Assad Apologists,
'Sorry to interrupt: I know you're very busy right now trying to convince yourselves, and the rest of us, that your hero couldn't possibly have used chemical weapons to kill up to 70 people in rebel-held Douma on April 7. Maybe Robert Fisk's mysterious doctor has it right — and maybe the hundreds of survivors and eyewitnesses to the attack are all "crisis actors."'

So, Fisk's evidence with its 'mysterious doctor' was clearly worthless, something shameless 'apologists' were using to try and convince themselves of an absurdity. Hasan named no other names, but readers could guess from the many smear pieces in The Times, Huffington Post, on the BBC, and spread by the likes of Oliver Kamm, George Monbiot and Alan Mendoza.

Hasan portrayed Assad as a satanic figure while the US and its allies – countries that have sent 15,000 high-tech anti-tank missiles, as well as billions of dollars of other weapons and training to fighters in Syria – are mere 'meddlers'. The jihadists are 'rebels' (a generally noble term), not fanatical invaders from Libya and Iraq. Hasan referenced biased sources including Ken Roth of Human Rights Watch, Martin Chulov of the Guardian, and the White Helmets.

The Intercept's co-editor, Glenn Greenwald, defended the piece:

'There is a meaningful debate to be had on Syria and, as I've said before, most media outlets (including us) have been quite one-sided about it. That said, Mehdi's article, well-documented though it was, didn't name anyone who guilty of loving Assad so I'm not sure who is offended'

We replied:

'"Mehdi's article, well-documented though it was, didn't name anyone". That's the problem. Hasan's article arrives in the context of a cross-spectrum, name-and-shame smear campaign making similar points'

We linked to three high-profile examples from the BBC, The Times and Huffington Post.

Political analyst Ian Sinclair declared Hasan's article a 'Necessary and important piece'.

It certainly wasn't 'necessary' to damn Assad yet again – the world's corporate media have been packed with news and comment pieces doing exactly that for years. As for the need to expose left 'apologists' – as we have seen, corporate media are currently mounting a fierce campaign targeting leftist university academics, apparently with the intention of getting them fired.

The question of importance is less clear-cut. The piece will, of course, have no effect whatsoever on Assad, whom Western 'apologists' on 'the anti-war far left' would be powerless to influence even if they came round to Hasan's view. On the other hand, as a purported 'leftist', Hasan's piece is important as ammunition for foreign policy warmongers, neocons and others. Thus, Jonathan Freedland tweeted:

'Strong piece from @mehdirhasan'

George Monbiot:

'To all those who have been trying to persuade me that the Assad government is simply maintaining order, please read this excellent article by @mehdirhasan #Syria'

Oliver Kamm of The Times:

'"Is this atrocity denial really necessary?" Well said by Mehdi on the extraordinary, scandalous spectacle of people purporting to be anti-imperialists while denying the crimes of Assad.'

Hasan, of course, knew his article would receive this kind of favourable attention, and he has form in reaching out to this audience. In 2010, whilst senior political editor at the New Statesman, he wrote a letter offering his services to Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre:

'I have always admired the paper's passion, rigour, boldness and, of course, news values. I believe the Mail has a vitally important role to play in the national debate, and I admire your relentless focus on the need for integrity and morality in public life, and your outspoken defence of faith, and Christian culture, in the face of attacks from militant atheists and secularists. I also believe... that I could be a fresh and passionate, not to mention polemical and contrarian, voice on the comment and feature pages of your award-winning newspaper.
'For the record, I am not a Labour tribalist and am often ultra-critical of the left – especially on social and moral issues, where my fellow leftists and liberals have lost touch with their own traditions and with the great British public... I could therefore write pieces for the Mail critical of Labour and the left, from "inside" Labour and the left (as the senior political editor at the New Statesman).'

Because, as we all know, being 'ultra-critical' of the left 'from "inside" Labour and the left' – for example, asking 'the anti-war far left who have a soft spot for the dictator in Damascus: Have you lost your minds? Or have you no shame?' - carries enormous weight.

In his piece for The Intercept, Hasan commented:

'And, look, we can argue over whether or not to support... regime change in Damascus (I don't).'

And yet, in 2013, he wrote:

'I want Assad gone and I believe him to be a brutal and corrupt dictator.'

Hasan's angry mockery of doubters on Douma is ironic indeed, given his own record on Libya. At a crucial time in March 2011, with NATO jets bombing Gaddafi's troops, Hasan commented:

'The innocent people of Benghazi deserve protection from Gaddafi's murderous wrath.'

The reality, as we saw in Part 1, is that the claim was 'not supported by the available evidence'.

Fisk's account, irrationally scorned by Hasan, was backed by on-the-ground testimony from reporter Pearson Sharp from One America News Network:

'Not one of the people that I spoke to in that neighbourhood said that they had seen anything, or heard anything, about a chemical attack on that day... they didn't see or hear anything out of the ordinary.'

As far as we could tell, there was nothing on the flagship BBC News at Six and Ten about any of this testimony from doctors and residents claiming that there was no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma on April 7.

It is shocking that the BBC ignored evidence supplied from Syria by Fisk - one of Britain's finest journalists – when it has cited hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times evidence supplied by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is run by a clothes shop owner in Coventry who supports regime change in Syria.

On BBC News at Ten on April 15, presenter Mishal Husain, Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen and political editor Laura Kuenssberg discussed the missile strikes on Syria and the political fallout here at home. There was no mention that the strikes had taken place just as OPCW inspectors had arrived in Damascus. Nor was there any discussion of expert opinion from international lawyers contradicting the government's assertion that the attacks were legal. A group of international law experts warned:

'We are practitioners and professors of international law. Under international law, military strikes by the United States of America and its allies against the Syrian Arab Republic, unless conducted in self-defense or with United Nations Security Council approval, are illegal and constitute acts of aggression.'

Meanwhile, the BBC joined the McCarthyite witch-hunt against anyone challenging the official narrative. In a piece titled, 'Syria war: The online activists pushing conspiracy theories', an anonymous BBC journalist commented:

'Despite the uncertainty about what happened in Douma, a cluster of influential social media activists is certain that it knows what occurred.'

Of course, the irony is that an incomparably bigger and better funded 'cluster of influential' state-corporate media has been vociferously claiming certainty about what is happening in Syria; not least 100% conviction of Assad's guilt for a string of chemical weapon attacks.

We have no idea who was responsible for the event in Douma – we don't know even if there was a chemical weapons attack. Our point is not that credible, sceptical voices are right, but that they should be heard.

On April 12, novelist Malcolm Pryce sent us this poignant tweet:

'I remember in the run-up to the Iraq War a friend I had known all my life suddenly said to me, "We must do something about this monster in Iraq." I said, "When did you first think that?" He answered honestly, "A month ago".'

This is the power of the corporate media to shape the public mind it is supposed to serve.

But to achieve this effect, it must present a black and white view of the world – 'we' are 'good', 'they' are 'bad'; 'we' are 'certain', 'they' are morally bewildered 'apologists'. When reality threatens to get in the way, when there is no choice, an increasingly extreme 'mainstream' will resort to deception in plain sight.
