Russia Begins Operations in Syria: End Game for the US Empire?

There seems to be something serious in the works here.

While an army corps linked to the FSA waits at the ready, 2,000 special forces, who participated in Turkey’s Olive Branch and Euphrates Shield operations, reached the Manbij countryside.
  • 8,000 Turkish, FSA
  • a 60-vehicle FSA convoy
  • In total, a 200-vehicle Turkish convoy
The above is a sizable military force but it's the 2000 special forces that make me wonder.

Those 2000 Maroon Berets are equivalent to say the U.S. Green Berets. They are the serious road pavers for invasion. I hope Putin has some good agreements we don't hear about or at least a plan B for this development.

And the bombings by Israel near Damascus as a Christmas present kind of get my attention.

WATCH Syrian Air Defences Intercept Missiles Near Damascus

Syria's air defences have repelled a missile attack on Damascus suburbs on Tuesday, Syrian state television reported.

According to the local media, the airstrikes on Damascus surroundings were carried out by the Israeli Air Force, and the majority of the missiles were shot down by the Syrian air defence.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the Israeli aircraft launched missiles through the Lebanese airspace.

The broadcaster also posted a video on its YouTube blog, showing Syrian air defences intercepting projectiles.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Forces press service reported that the Israeli air defences have been activated in response to an anti-aircraft missile that had been launched from Syria.

Mattis Wishes US Troops Merry Christmas, Tells Them to ‘Hold the Line’

Outgoing Defense Secretary James Mattis wished US troops a merry Christmas and was at work on Christmas Day after being fired by President Trump two months prior to his planned departure date.

Mattis wrote a holiday letter while working in his office at the Pentagon, the Hill reported.

“To those in the field or at sea, ‘keeping watch by night’ this holiday season, you should recognize that you carry on the proud legacy of those who stood the watch in decades past […] In this world awash in change, you hold the line. Storm clouds loom, yet because of you, your fellow citizens live safe at home,” the letter reads.

On Thursday, Mattis submitted his resignation to Trump after the US President decided to withdraw all US troops from Syria. In his resignation letter, Mattis said that his views and Trump’s did not “align” and that his “over four decades” of experience taught him the value of alliances, such as NATO, and of standing strong against adversaries like China and Russia. Mattis had said in his letter that he would depart in February, however, the letter reportedly prompted an angry reaction from Trump and on Sunday the president announced that Mattis’ deputy, Patrick Shanahan, would become acting secretary beginning on January 1.

Mattis’s brother, Tom, said the secretary was not angry about being fired early, according to The Seattle Times.

“He was very calm about the whole thing,” Tom Mattis told the newspaper of his Sunday call with his brother. “Very matter of fact. No anger.”

He also said that his brother isn’t going to leave the political stage even after being fired.

“No one should assume that his service to his country will end,” Tom Mattis said. “And the manner of his departure is yet another service to the nation. It is the very definition of patriotism and integrity.”

"There seems to be something serious in the works here." I totally - agree with you! Something major is in the works and it may involve "more" then what is going on in Syria, at this critical moment?

Take, for incidence, the article SToRmR1dR just Posted on Mattis:

Mattis’s brother, Tom, said the secretary was not angry about being fired early, according to The Seattle Times.

I don't know, who or what Mattis's Brother, Tom is ... if he's also in the Military but I see BIG Warning Signs in every word he stated?

Mattis had said in his letter that he would depart in February, however, the letter reportedly prompted an angry reaction from Trump and on Sunday the president announced that Mattis’ deputy, Patrick Shanahan, would become acting secretary beginning on January 1.

Mattis stated he wanted to stay on until February - so he could attend an important NATO meeting? Why? What does NATO have "in the works" and why was that meeting so important to Mattis? As stated above, Shanahan doesn't get sworn in - as acting Secretary
until January 1st. Technically, Mattis is still at the helm? What devious and inhuman act is that S.O.B. up too? !!! ?

“Very matter of fact. No anger.” Truth is probably closer to the opposite - that Mattis is acting like a wounded animal in a death spiral and his ceaseless anger and power-hungry greed is preparing to take the whole dam World - down with him!

Take in consideration, serious quotes made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in this November 25th article:

US highly likely to venture new provocation against Russia - Lavrov
US highly likely to venture new provocation against Russia - Lavrov

Political opponents of US President Donald Trump are sure to venture new provocations to break down relations between Moscow and Washington, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Sunday.

"We cannot guarantee that those political forces in the United States that are seeking to break down Trump’s presidency will not venture new provocations," he said in an interview with the Moscow. Kremlin. Putin program on the Rossiya-1 television channel.
"On the contrary, further provocations and attempts to destroy our relations are highly likely to follow. But it in no way means that dialogue is unnecessary."

He stressed that Moscow is ready for such dialogue. "When the president of a great nations is ready to speak with the president of another great nations, I think it is our duty to spare no effort to facilitate such contacts," he said. "The more so as certain progress has been recently seen in restoration of dialogue channels and at other levels, including between the Russian and US security councils." (End Quote.)

I've been following closely - the developments in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty).

It was Mattis and the Pentagon who orchestrated the pull-out of the INF Treaty - not Trump! President Putin and FM Lavrov have stressed - in every conceivable way possible - in the last two months - the need for the US to stay in the INF Treaty!!!

The pull-out is Mattis's ticket for War! World Wide War on a Global scale! The US/Pentagon/NATO/Israel have 800+ bases.
Russia - China - Iran will probably be the first primary targets? It only needs a spark to set it off? I sense, the situation now developing in Syria - with a major Military build up, from all sides - is meant to be the trigger - that lights that spark! I sense, this situation is the "main reason" Trump has remained at the White House? We are at a very critical junction right now?

I envision, Trump is in a very vulnerable and sensitive situation right now, basically with his hands tied. If there is any "saving Grace to humanity" - it will only come in the form of Russia! Ironically, then we can all blame Russia - for saving our ASS!

Moscow views as disappointing the results of the United Nations General Assembly voting on the Russia-drafted resolution calling for strengthening the RussiaN-US Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty), and also as a new crackdown on the architecture of global security, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

"Results of the UN General Assembly voting on the Russia-drafted resolution, co-authored by ten more countries, cannot but disappoint. [The resolution] lacked a few votes so that the arithmetic majority of the nations could unambiguously and without any invented excuses express their support to viability of this treaty through activation of a detailed and constructive dialogue by the sides, taking into account the existing mutual concerns," the statement said.

"Thus, the architecture of the world’s security and stability took a new blow. Henceforth, after having the INF Treaty dismantled, the world’s several regions might be plunged simultaneously into an arms race, or even in a direct confrontation," the foreign ministry said.

According to the ministry, in order to pass the draft by two thirds of the vote, it would have been required "that a sufficient number of US allies and closest partners demonstrated independence in international affairs and, despite Washington’s toughest pressure, showed a responsible attitude to preserving the system of arms control mechanisms, which have cracked because of the US."

Those countries, mostly NATO members, acted as opponents of the INF Treaty, regardless of their assurances of the treaty’s significance, the statement said.

Nonetheless, Moscow thanked the nations that backed Russia’s efforts at the UN and "thus gave a convincing signal about urgency" of the INF Treaty.

On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly voted down the resolution in support of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Forty-three nations voted for the document, forty-six were against and another seventy-eight abstained.

Among those who voted against the resolution were the United States, the European Union nations, Japan, Turkey, Israel and Ukraine. The document was supported by China, member nations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Iran, Syria and a number of Latin American countries.

IDF Strikes on Syria Created Direct Threat to Two Passenger Planes – Russian MoD

The Russian Defence Ministry has stated that neither of the passenger planes that were threatened due to the Israeli assault on Syria were related to Russian air carriers.

Six Israeli F-16 fighter jets directly threatened two civilian planes during their recent strikes on Syria, Gen. Maj. Igor Konashenkov, the spokesman of the Russian Defence Ministry, said on Wednesday.

"Provocative actions of the Israeli Air Force on the evening of 25 December, when six F-16 aircraft launched an airstrike on the territory of Syria from the airspace of neighbouring Lebanon, created a direct threat to two passenger aircraft," the spokesman said.

According to Konashenkov, the attack was carried out while two commercial aircraft were landing at airports in Beirut and Damascus. He specified that the two passenger planes did not belong to Russian air carriers.

Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport Youssef Fenianos, for his part, said that two civilian aircraft were on the verge of a catastrophe in Lebanese airspace due to Israel's actions.

"There was a telephone conversation with the [Acting Prime Minister] Saad Hariri, during which he was informed about the details of what happened yesterday. Miraculously, it was possible to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in which passengers of two civilian aircraft in Lebanese airspace could suffer during the invasion of Israeli aircraft which launched a strike on the south of Damascus," Fenianos said.

The minister also said that the Lebanese authorities intend to send a complaint to the UN Security Council in connection with the invasion of Israeli aircraft in the country's airspace to attack Syria that caused threat to passenger aircraft.

'Under Cover' of Civil Aircraft

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the Israeli airstrikes on Syria were again carried out "under the cover" of passenger planes landing in Damascus and Beirut.

The ministry described the airstrikes as a flagrant violation of Syria's sovereignty and UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 1701 on the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Earlier, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the Israeli Air Force last night carried out an unprecedented 1.5-hour long attack on Syria, with the majority of the Israeli missiles being intercepted by Syrian air defences.

In December, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue Israeli operations in Syria to counter Iran's military presence in the country, following the US' decision to withdraw from the Arab Republic.

"The decision to withdraw 2,000 US troops from Syria will not change our consistent policy. We will continue to act against Iran's attempts to gain a military foothold there and, if necessary, even expand our operations," Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting.

Iran has repeatedly stated that its forces maintain an exclusively advisory role in Syria, and denies any plans to establish a permanent military presence in the country.

Syrian Foreign Ministry: Israel's Attacks on Damascus Possible Due to US Support

Six jets of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) opened fire on targets in Syria on Tuesday night; most missiles were reportedly intercepted by Syrian air defence forces. Both Damascus and Moscow have condemned the attack, which Washington said was aimed at Hezbollah's targets.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said in a letter to the United Nations on Wednesday that Israel's missile attack on Damascus and its suburbs is an evidence of unlimited support that Washington gives to Tel Aviv.

"Syria underlines that Israel's continuous aggressive policy is possible due to the unlimited and consistent support of the American administration," reads the statement.

The ministry added that Israeli attacks seek to drag out the Syrian conflict and boost the morale of terrorist groups that confront Bashar al-Assad's government. Damascus also called on the UN to take steps against Israel in order to prevent such incidents in the future.

Lebanon, for its part, announced that it would send a complaint to the UN Security Council against Israel over its invasion in the country's airspace to attack Syria.

"There was an agreement that Lebanon will file an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council against Israel and will take a decision that will protect Lebanon and [its] citizens," said Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport Youssef Fenianos.

The IDF has yet to comment on the incident; however, the military issued a transparent statement on Wednesday. "This is not where the story ends; if need be, we will operate with the same determination, the same precision, and with the same professionalism shown by the people of the Air Force, whether on the ground or in the air."

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Tuesday that Israeli military jets launched missiles from Lebanese airspace, most of which have been downed before reaching their targets. An ammunition storage was ostensibly damaged and three Syrian soldiers injured during the operation.

Russia's Foreign Ministry stated following the report that the six Israeli F-16 aircraft that carried out the 1.5-hour long airstrike threatened two unnamed passenger jets, which were landing at airports in Beirut and Damascus. Moscow described the attack as a "flagrant violation" of Syria's sovereignty and UN Security Council resolutions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier pledged to continue operations in Syria to counter what it calls Iran's growing military capabilities in the country, following the US' decision to withdraw from the Arab Republic.

Iran has repeatedly stated that its forces maintain an exclusively advisory role in Syria, and denies any plans to establish a permanent military presence in the country.

Russia: Territories where US forces are present illegally must return under Syrian state’s authority

Maria-Zakharova.jpg

The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed the need for territories where US forces are present illegally to return under the Syrian state’s authority.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the decision to withdraw the US forces should help the political settlement of the crisis in Syria, although there is a lack of clarity in the timetable for this withdrawal.

She noted that the possibility that the US forces could continue carrying out attacks in Syria after their withdrawal continues to raise questions.

Zakharova also said that there are plans to continue communications using the Astana formula for resolving the crisis in Syria as soon as possible.

The Russian Defense Ministry has carried out tests of the hypersonic system Avangard to successfully verify all of its technical parameters, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with government members on Wednesday.

"On my instructions the industrial enterprises and the Defense Ministry have prepared for and carried out the final test of this system," Putin said. "The test was completely successful: all technical parameters were verified."

Russia’s hypersonic missile system will enter service in the Armed Forces next year, Vladimir Putin told the government on Wednesday, stressing that this is a new type of strategic weapons.

"Starting from next year, in 2019, a new intercontinental strategic system Avangard will enter service in the Russian army and the first regiment in the Strategic Missile Troops will be deployed," Putin said.

On March 12, 2018, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper that Russia’s Defense Ministry had signed a contract on the serial production of the most advanced Avangard hypersonic missile complex.

The Avangard is a strategic intercontinental ballistic missile system equipped with a gliding hypersonic maneuvering warhead.

Maneuvering warhead
According to open sources, the guided hypersonic warhead (the spacehead) of the Avangard intercontinental ballistic missile system is codenamed 15Yu71. It was developed as part of the R&D work "4202" by specialists of the Military and Industrial Corporation "Research and Production Association of Machine-Building" (the town of Reutov) under the guidance of Chief Designer Pavel Sudyukov. Russia’s Federal Space Agency acted as the customer for the R&D work "4202."

Compared to traditional warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles, which follow the ballistic trajectory towards their targets, the maneuvering glider warhead travels a part of its flight path at an altitude of several dozen kilometers in the dense layers of the atmosphere.

While maneuvering along its flight path and by its altitude, the glider warhead is capable of bypassing the area of the missile defense’s detection and destruction capabilities.

The warhead’s performance characteristics have not been officially disclosed. Presumably, the glider vehicle is about 5.4m long and develops a speed exceeding Mach 20. The warhead is either nuclear (from 150 kilotonnes to 1 megatonne) or conventional.

According to Strategic Missile Force Commander Sergei Karakayev, the vehicle’s body is made of composite materials, which makes it resistant to aerodynamic heating of several thousand degrees and protects it from laser irradiation. The vehicle is equipped with the thermoregulation system developed by the Nauka Research and Production Association.

Trials
On February 19, 2004, First Deputy Chief of Russia’s General Staff Yuri Baluyevsky told reporters that during a training exercise, specialists "tested a space vehicle capable of flying at a hypersonic speed while maneuvering by its flight path and altitude and, therefore, capable of bypassing regional missile defense groupings."

According to unofficial data, the tests of the "object 4202" had been held since 2004 at the Baikonur and Yasny spaceports where the RS-18B rocket based on the 15A35 intercontinental ballistic missile of the UR-100NUTTKh strategic missile complex was used as a carrier. According to open sources, the experimental facility’s launch equipment for the R&D work "4202" was developed by the Design Bureau of Special Machine-Building (St. Petersburg) while the transport and technological equipment set was made by the Design Bureau "Motor" (a branch of the Center for the Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure).

Media outlets reported in July 2016, citing unnamed sources that the trials of the "object 4202" would be conducted along with the flight development tests of the prospective Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.

In his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on March 1, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the Avangard missile complex with the maneuvering warhead. As the president noted, "the vehicle approaches the target like a fireball" while "being reliably guided." Strategic Missile Force Commander Sergei Karakayev said later on March 1 that the trials of the Avangard missile complex had been successfully completed.

According to Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov, the Avangard system was "well tested," although it took great efforts to develop it. According to the defense official, the problem of guiding the vehicle and the issues of its protection were quite acute but solutions were found while the practical tests of this system "confirmed the operability of the approach that was selected.".

The United States is building up the number of carriers of cruise missiles - destroyers, cruisers and submarines - near Russia’s borders, the editor-in-chief of the military magazine Arsenal Otechestva (Arsenal of the Fatherland), Viktor Murakhovsky, said in the wake of a recent statement by the Russian Navy’s Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Korolyov.

"The US Navy’s systems are armed with the sole type of missile - sea-based non-nuclear cruise missile Tomahawk,"
Murakhovsky said, adding that the United States possessed the world’s largest arsenal of cruise missiles deployed on naval ships.

"According to different estimates, the US Navy possesses 4,000 to 5,000 missiles. Their carriers are surface ships and submarines," Murakhovsky said.

He recalled that the United States had re-equipped Ohio submarines to carry Tomahawks. Ballistic missiles were removed from these submarines to have been replaced with cruise missile launchers. Each of the re-equipped submarines is capable of carrying 154 Tomahawks.

Arleigh Burke class destroyers and Ticonderoga class cruisers are the main types of surface ships armed with cruise missiles (each can carry up to 122 Tomahawks).

"These ships are equipped with vertical launch systems Mk41 meant for air defense systems Aegis and Tomahawk cruise missiles. How many cruise missiles and air defense missiles each ship is armed with depends on the concrete task," Murakhovsky added.

He explained that these weapon systems were called strategic (usually this term is applied to nuclear weapons - TASS), because they are considered as a non-nuclear strategic deterrent. He added that Tomahawk ships and submarines could be regarded as part and parcel of the US concept of a prompt global strike, although somewhat extended in time: Tomahawks have a sub-sonic speed and their time of approach to the target is 60 minutes. The original prompt global strike concept implied the use of hypersonic missiles and non-nuclear ballistic missiles.

Russian defense ministry’s delegation focuses on naval cooperation at talks in Iran

The Russian delegation arrived in Iran on December 24 to attend the second meeting of the Russian-Iranian working group implementing the intergovernmental agreement on military cooperation.

A delegation of the Russian Defense Ministry led by the Deputy Chief of the General Staff Igor Osipov focused on naval cooperation at talks with Iranian counterparts, the ministry’s spokesperson told reporters on Wednesday.

The Russian delegation arrived in Iran on December 24 to attend the second meeting of the Russian-Iranian working group implementing the intergovernmental agreement on military cooperation, the ministry said.

"The talks touched upon a wide range of aspcets of Russia’s military cooperation with Iran, including interaction between different forces. Particular attention was drawn to navy cooperation," says the defense ministry’s statement obtained by TASS.

Apart from that, Russia thanked Tehran for active participation in the 2018 International Army Games and invited Iranian service members to take part in the 2019 Games.

"During the visit, Vice Admiral Igor Osipov held a several meetings with the military leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran, exchanging views on regional and global security, the current situation and prospects for bilateral cooperation in the military sector," the defense ministry said.

"The meetings were held in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and confirmed mutual determination for further development of Russian-Iranian military cooperation," the ministry said.

Foreign Ministry: The Israeli assault on Syria is blatant violation of UNSC resolutions

Foreign-Ministry.jpg

Syria stressed on Wednesday that the Israeli aggression on its territories is a blatant violation of UNSC Resolution No. 350 for the year 1974 on Separation of Forces Agreement, as this aggression comes in the framework of the constant Israeli attempts to prolong the crisis in Syria and the war of terrorism and to raise the morale of the remnants of terrorists.

In two identical letters sent to the UN Secretary General and Head of the Security Council, Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said that authorities of the Israeli occupation launched on 25th of December, 2018 a new assault on territories of the Syrian Arab Republic in a flagrant violation of UNSC Resolution NO. 350 through targeting several military and civil positions in Damascus and its countryside with missiles, adding that the assault coincided with a time when streets were crowded with civilians celebrating Christmas for the first time after Damascus and its countryside were cleaned of terrorism.

The Ministry continued to say that the attempts of the authorities of the Israeli occupation to terrify the Syrian people in a holy day constitutes conclusive evidence that what “Israel” is doing is not different from what the terrorist organizations of Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra do, as the authorities of the Israeli occupation has moved to a new stage practicing the terror of state directly after its agents (the terrorist groups) were defeated.

The Ministry continued to say that the Syrian Arab Republic stresses that Israel would not have continued to take its dangerous and aggressive approach without the continuous unlimited support by the US Administration.

The Ministry concluded by saying that Syria demands the UN Security Council all over again to assume its responsibilities in keeping international peace and security and adopting prompt and firm measures to prevent the repetition of the Israeli attacks, as it demands it to obligate “Israel” to respect its resolutions related to Separation of Forces Agreement.

Russia: The Israeli attack on Syria is a blatant violation of its sovereignty and UNSC resolutions

Russia said that the Israeli attack on Syria is a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and the UNSC resolutions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement clarifying that the Israeli attack took place by covering it with civil airplanes heading to Damascus and Beirut airports, expressing Moscow’s worry over the attack and the way it was carried out besides the violation of the international resolutions including Resolution No. 1701.

On Tuesday, the Syrian air defenses confronted hostile missiles launched by the Israeli warplanes from over the Lebanese territories and downed most of them before reaching their targets , affirming that the damages of the aggression were limited to ammunition warehouse and the injury of three soldiers.

No pullout of Iraq, it can be base ‘to do something in Syria’ – Trump on first visit to troops

US President Donald Trump said he's not planning to take American troops out of Iraq as he made his first visit to an active combat zone. His surprise trip also sparked online frenzy after his plane had been noticed over Europe.

Speaking at Al Asad Air Base west of Baghdad, Trump defended his decision to withdraw troops from Syria last week.
"I think a lot of people are going to come around to my way of thinking. It's time for us to start using our head," the president said.

In fact we could use this as the base if we wanted to do something in Syria.

Trump, accompanied by wife Melania, traveled to meet troops deployed in a war zone for the first time since the beginning of his presidency. He had faced criticism before for being the first US president since 2002 not to visit the troops around Christmas.

Last week, Trump announced the total withdrawal of US troops from Syria and a draw-down of half the force currently in Afghanistan, to shouts of protest from both Democrats and Republicans in Washington. The move prompted the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis and even calls for a military coup among some of Trump’s critics.

Meanwhile, Turkey has been amassing troops on its border with Syria, leading the US foreign service establishment to lament a likely impending assault on Kurds. The Kurdish-led YPG militia have been the mainstay of the US proxy “Syrian Democratic Forces,” who liberated much of northeastern Syria from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) but refused to hand it over to the government in Damascus.

Trump’s surprise trip to Iraq hasn't gone unnoticed, as reports of an Air Force One plane flying over Europe went viral on social media Wednesday.

Theories of where he might have been going were blooming, fueled by the fact that the US leader was unusually silent on Twitter.

‘We give them $4.5bn a year’: Israel will still be ‘good’ after US withdrawal from Syria – Trump

Donald Trump has told Benjamin Netanyahu that the US is paying billions of dollars a year for Israeli security, and that Tel Aviv should not be worried about losing its influence in the region after US troops withdraw from Syria.

“I spoke with Bibi [Benjamin Netanyahu]. I told Bibi, you know we give Israel 4.5 billion dollars a year. And they are doing very well at defending themselves,” Trump told reporters on his way back from Iraq where he paid a surprise visit to US soldiers stationed there. “We are going to take great care of Israel. Israel is going to be good,” US president added, replying to a question on how his announced withdrawal from Syria will impact Israel.

And we give, frankly, a lot more than that, if you look at the books.

Israel, already the largest recipient of American foreign aid since World War II, managed during the presidency of Barack Obama to secure another $38 billion military aid package over the next 10 years. This amount, however, fell short of the annual $4.5 billion that Netanyahu had been seeking. Last year, US aid to Israel amounted to nearly $3.2 billion and is expected to rise once the new deal starts in FY2019.

Over the years, the Jewish state has used the American funds to build up its military capabilities and now feels confident in its ability to protect its interests in the region.

“We are standing steadfast on our red lines in Syria and everywhere else,” Netanyahu said Wednesday, noting that Israel has developed “special capabilities” in weapons and defensive systems, as well as attack missiles that can destroy any target, even after US troops withdraw from Syria.

Last week the US President surprised the world by announcing that he would pull all 2,000 US soldiers out of the war-torn country, leaving Israel to tackle the perceived Iranian threat all on its own. Undeterred, Netanyahu stressed that Israel is “not prepared to accept the Iranian military entrenchment in Syria,” vowing to continue strikes against its neighbor.

Netanyahu praises Israeli air force after reckless Christmas raid on Syria (video)

Israeli PM and acting defense chief Benjamin Netanyahu has praised the capabilities of his air force a day after IDF jets endangered two civilian flights while carrying out Christmas Day strikes against ‘Iranian targets’ in Syria.

“We are standing steadfast on our red lines in Syria and everywhere else,” Netanyahu told cadets at a graduation ceremony at Hatzerim Air Force Base, noting that the air force’s unmatched potential allows them to reach areas “near and far, very far.”

While singing the praises to the “special capabilities” of his country’s airborne forces and arsenals that can destroy any target, Netanyahu did not directly comment on the latest strikes in Syria. He also failed to respond to the criticism of the Russian military which earlier had accused the Israeli air force of directly endangering two civilian flights over Damascus and the Lebanese capital Beirut during Tuesday night’s raid.

On the evening of Christmas Day, six Israeli F-16 fighter jets used two civilian flights as cover to strike a logistics compound on the outskirts of Damascus from Lebanese airspace, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday. Thus, during the assault, the Syrian military was forced to restrict the use of air defense systems and radio jamming capabilities to avert a possible tragedy. Despite that advantage, only two of the sixteen Israeli-launched laser-guided bombs reached their targets, wounding three people, while the rest were intercepted.

While a potential tragedy involving civilian jets was averted on Tuesday, similar decoy tactics by Israel already led to horrific consequences back in September, when Syrian air defense units struck a Russian Il-20 plane, killing all 15 crew on board. At the time of the disaster, Israel’s F-16s were using the surveillance plane as cover during their raid against alleged ‘Iranian targets’ in Syria.

Yet, despite a record of reckless actions, Netanyahu remains committed to fighting the “Iranian military entrenchment in Syria,” by countering the threat “vigorously and continuously,” even through the holiday season.

Hezbollah Leaders Unhurt by Israeli Airstrike on Damascus - Source

None of the leaders of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement were hurt in the Israeli airstrike on Damascus, a source familiar with the situation told Sputnik on Wednesday, denying media reports that said otherwise.

"This is not true. Nobody from Hezbollah was hurt," the source said, commenting on the reports.

The remark comes after Syrian state news agency SANA reported earlier in the day that the Israeli air force had conducted a missile attack on Damascus during the night. Though most of the missiles were shot down, three Syrian servicemen were injured and an ammunition depot was damaged.

Several media outlets reported that the airstrike allegedly hit the Iranian plane with the high-ranked Hezbollah members.

Israel regularly conducts airstrikes on Syrian territory, claiming that it targets Iranian military depots and arms supplies prepared for the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah.

Tehran, for its part, has repeatedly rejected the accusations, insisting that only military advisers, invited by Damascus, are present in Syria. Iran has also denied providing armaments to Hezbollah's military.

Hezbollah has been supporting the Syrian government in its civil war since 2012. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah has repeatedly said that Hezbollah troops came to Syria after receiving an invitation to do so from Damascus and were ready to leave the country as soon as the government asked.

Russia coordinates with Turkey its actions in Syria

Russia closely coordinates its actions in Syria with Turkey, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, she said: "We closely coordinate our views and the implementation of a concrete policy in Syria with our Turkish colleagues, both in foreign policy and in military counter-terrorist operations on the ground," she said.

Zakharova also announced, that a meeting in the Astana format, regarding further efforts to restore the peace in Syria, will take place in Moscow "in the nearest time".

"The three guarantor countries of the Astana format maintain intensive contacts through various channels. Of particular importance are the meetings of heads of state, as well as foreign and defense ministers. Cooperation is carried out both on a bilateral and trilateral basis. I can say that such contacts are planned in the near future, they will take place in Moscow," she said.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had informed about a scheduled visit to Moscow in late December.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on protesters with unexpected ferocity.

Medicines, books brought to Syrians in Idlib, Hama, Damascus — Russia’s Defense Ministry

The Russian Сenter for reconciliation of the conflicting sides in Syria have carried out three humanitarian missions in the regions of Idlib, Hama and Rif Dimashq, the center’s head Lieutenant General Sergei Solomatin told reporters on Wednesday.

"In the past 24 hours, the Russian center for reconciliation of the conflicting sides has carried out three humanitarian operations in Abu-ad-Duhur in the Idlib province, Skalbia in the Hama province and the Hirdjilla refugee camp in the Rif Dimashq province, handing out one tonne of fresh bread, 20 kilograms of candy sets, 300 kilograms of medication, 30 kilograms of children’s vitamins, along with books and stationery with a total weight of 45 kilograms," Solomatin said.

The center continues restoring infrastructure and creating conditions for the return of refugees. As of December 25, 2018, as many as 30,920 houses have been rebuilt along with 714 educational and 122 healthcare facilities, while 951 kilometers of motorways have been repaired.

The Russian reconciliation center continues to fulfill assigned tasks after the completion of the military campaign in Syria. The center’s officers regularly travel around the country's liberated areas to assess the humanitarian situation. The main efforts of the Russian military are now focused on assistance to the refugees returning to their homes and evacuation of civilians from de-escalation zones.

UAE Embassy in Damascus to Reopen on Thursday After 6-Year Closure - Source

The embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will reopen in Damascus on Thursday after a six-year break, making it the first Arab embassy to start working again in Syria after closing as a result of the war, a source in the Syrian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik.

"The UAE embassy in Damascus will reopen in the second half of the day," the source said.

The final preparations for the opening of the diplomatic mission are underway, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the scene. The embassy building was renovated earlier this week.

During the Syrian conflict that began in 2011, over 30 countries closed their embassies or relocated diplomatic staff to Beirut, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the EU mission. The United Arab Emirates closed the diplomatic mission and recalled the ambassador from Syria in 2012 due to the Syrian crisis.

The UAE is the first Arab country to restore the work of its embassy in Syria. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad said earlier that Damascus welcomed the resumption of work of Arab countries' embassies in Syria.

Bahrain to reportedly reopen embassy in Syria

Bahrain will reportedly reopen their embassy in Syria after cutting off ties with the country during the early years of the conflict.

According to reports from Damascus, the Bahraini embassy in Syria will be reopened in the next ten days.

This move by Bahrain comes on the same day that the United Arab Emirates officially reopened their embassy in Damascus.

Bahrain was one of the 18 Arab League states to vote in favor of suspending Syria’s membership from the organization.

However, Syria and Bahrain have since reconciled through several intermediaries and restored diplomatic ties.

Syria's Return to Arab League Crucial for Peace Process – Moscow

Syria’s return to the Arab League, a regional bloc, would be beneficial to the peace process on the ground, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

"Syria rejoining the Arab family would be a major boost to the Syrian settlement process," Igor Tsarikov said at a joint meeting of Russian and Syrian coordination centers for refugee returns.

Syria’s membership with the 22-nation organization was suspended in 2011 over violence triggered by the Arab Spring uprising.

The Russian ministry’s spokesman praised a visit this month by Sudanese President Omar Bashir – the first Arab League leader to come to Syria in eight years – as a step toward restoring ties between Damascus and the Arabic-speaking bloc.

Russian senator says Trump double-dealing on Syria exit with plans to keep US base in Iraq

US President Donald Trump has announced that he planned to maintain a military base in Iraq since he seeks to quell discontent among Republicans over his decision to pull out US troops from Syria, Russian Senator Konstantin Kosachev said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, at his meeting with US troops in Iraq, Trump declared that the United States was not planning to withdraw its forces from the Middle Eastern country. On December 19, the US leader announced his decision to start pulling out American troops from Syria, stressing that the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) had been defeated and this was the only reason why the US forces had remained there under his presidency.

"Having stated, during a surprise visit to Iraq that he intended to keep a military base in that country as an advanced springboard for actions in Syria, US President Donald Trump is trying to have it both ways. On the one hand, he still wants to demonstrate the intention to abandon the role of global policeman with the subsequent mission where American blood is spilt for the sake of a country, about which most of them can’t find on a map. On the other hand, Trump certainly needs to quell discontent among the Republicans related to his decision on withdrawing US troops from Syria," Kosachev, who chairs the Russian Federation Council’s (upper house of parliament) Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote on Facebook.

The Russian senator recalled that Trump’s decision to exit Syria served as grounds for the resignation of Pentagon chief Jim Mattis, who was apparently "more popular in Washington than Trump."

"I believe that the statement won’t change anything in this situation. The Americans are in Iraq (unlike in Syria) on somewhat legal grounds as they support the local government’s struggle against the militants," Kosachev said. According to him, if the US seeks to also deliver a strike on Syria, hardly any reasons, except for domestic political ones, would stop it.

Kosachev stressed the necessity at all levels to tell Washington that military action in a neighboring country without the consent of its leadership and the UN Security Council’s mandate amounts to coercive intervention in a sovereign state’s affairs and fulfilling the mission of a global policeman, which no one assigned to Washington.

RUSSIA TO BUILD AIRPORT, VACCINE PRODUCTION PLANT IN SYRIA’S TARTUS

Russian companies plan to invest in the Syrian coastal city of Tartus among other projects as part of the Syrian reconstruction, Imad Sabuni, the head of the Syrian Planning and International Cooperation Commission said on December 26th.

Russian companies are reportedly planning to construct an airport in the city of Tartus, as well as joint Syrian-Russian plant to produce vaccines within a framework of agreements signed during the 11th session of the Syrian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission held on December 14th in Damascus.

“A project to build an airport in Tartus at the site of an agricultural airfield within the framework of the Build-operate-transfer cooperation … There are two more projects in the field of health care, the most significant of them is the project on building the Russian-Syrian vaccine production plant,” Imad Sabuni said.

Other notable bilateral projects include rebuilding the car tires’ factory and construction of a new cement plant.

A framework agreement was signed during the 11th session of the Syrian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission by the Chairman of Planning and International Cooperation Authority Imad Sabouni and the Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Georgy Kalamanov. It was aimed at implementing a roadmap for trade and industrial cooperation.

Furthermore, an agreement in the Housing and Public Works was signed by Deputy Minister of Public Works and Housing Mazen al-Laham and the First Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing and Utilities of the Russian Federation Leonid Stavitsky.

Al-Baath University and the Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education (STANKIN) signed a scientific and academic cooperation agreement.

Furthermore, a co-operation agreement between the Syrian and Russian Businessmen Councils was signed by Dr. Jamal Kanbrieh, head of the Syrian-Russian Businessmen Council and Dr. Louay Youssef, Director of the Russian-Syrian Business Council.

In the opening speech of the 11th session, Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem said that the meetings would outline the defining features of a roadmap for industrial and economic co-operation to “jump-start the actual partnership between the two countries.”

Al-Moallem also said that Syria welcomes the participation in Russian companies in the reconstruction process, praising Russia’s support for Syria in the fight against terrorism and saying that it has added a new dimension to the historic friendship relations between the two countries.

In total, 30 investment projects were covered in the protocol of the session.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has estimated that it may take up to $400 billion to reconstruct Syria after the conflict. Russia and Iran have repeatedly showed their committal to aiding the Syrian reconstruction.

In terms of military co-operation, following the downing of the Russian IL-20, Russia supplied S-300 air missile defense systems to Syria. In addition to that, following a visit of Israeli officials to Moscow, reports surfaced of new rules of engagement between Israel and Syria.

According to them, all military airports or other facilities in Syria also have Russian officers and soldiers positioned in them. Thus, if Israel targets any of them, it will receive an equal response.

Following the announcement of US withdrawal from Syria, Russia and Iran are expected to play an even larger role in the situation in the country.

Russia allegedly warns Turkey to stay out of Syria, let Assad take back country

The Russian Federation has allegedly warned Turkey to stay out of Syria and to let the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad retake the entire country.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the Russian Federation warned Turkey against capturing the territories that were under the control of the U.S.-backed forces in northern Syria.

Despite these claims by the AP, the Russian Federation has yet to issue any statement warning Turkey against launching their offensive against the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG).

Instead, the Russian Foreign Ministry has reiterated that they are working closely with Turkey in Syria, adding that all activities are discussed prior to being conducted.

The Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) are allegedly digging tunnels around Manbij to protect the city from the upcoming Turkish military invasion.

According to the state-owned Anadolu Agency, their journalists captured new footage of the YPG forces digging tunnels around the city of Manbij.

“The new Anadolu Agency footage shows that the terrorists have continued excavation to extend and expand the tunnels, as well as electrical work to light them up for the use of machines and wheelbarrows.

The tunnels, which have been made tall enough to allow most people to walk through upright, surround the district center of Manbij,” the Anadolu report claimed.

When the announcement of US troop pullouts came for Syria; like Afghanistan before and now, it obviously plays well at home (for some), and yet these strategies usually come with contingencies or ulterior motives to hide more of the day to day operations with the aims not necessarily changing from when they begun. With that news came the thought (not known at this point) that the vacuum would be quickly filled with mercenaries who will have access to the usual bases, intelligence, arms et cetera (like we have seen going back to GWB's use of Prince in Iraq prior).

If one searches this out, it comes up in articles spanning many years with a focus of redirecting pregnant military budgets to the private sector. This is not anything new either as the private sector comes in many forms in the theater of war like these guys and these firms.

Back in October, the UK's Independent cites (of Afghanistan):

At present there are 15,000 US troops and around 5,000 from other countries and also, little known, almost 30,000 private contractors in Afghanistan. That is as well as American combat aircraft,

At the height of the ‘surge’ under Barack Obama, the International Security Assistance Force reached a total of 140,000.

To make this point for Syria, here was a news story (Dec 22, 2018 -news.com.au) on this subject. The story lends itself to highlighting many countries who use proxies - some for different reasons; details not discussed. The story as well seemed to have a slight Russian bias bringing up Crimea (in the video) which does not mean that this was not based on a useful strategy employed to use proxies (Wagner - contractor) to help protect the Crimean's anticipating what was coming at them from thugs in Kyiv after maidan. And it should be noted that that private company is officially sanctioned by the US.

Ominous Blackwater ‘is coming’ advert raises prospect Trump has privatised war
The day Donald Trump decreed he would pull US troops out of Syria and Afghanistan, controversial US mercenary group made a scary threat.

The day President Trump decreed the US would abandon Syria and Afghanistan, controversial US mercenary group Blackwater declared — “WE ARE COMING’. Does this mean war has just been privatised?

The highly controversial move sent shockwaves through the Middle East, NATO and many US allies. It also prompted US Defence Secretary James Mattis to quit.

But as the turmoil unfolded, a blast echoed out from the past.

Blackwater, the mercenary organisation disgraced for its trigger-happy behaviour during the occupation of Iraq, took out a curiously timed full-page advert in the gun-and-hunting magazine Recoil. {recruiting?}

It was stark. Black. There was the company’s distinctive bear’s-paw logo. And three words: WE ARE COMING.

It has ominous implications.

Many military analysts and international affairs think-tanks argue such mercenary groups are thinly-veiled fronts for state-backed intervention. But the corporate nature of the combattans gives them ‘plausible deniability’ to avoid international outcry.

It’s being called the ‘Grey Zone’, because of its legally dubious nature.

BUSINESS OF WAR

Trump’s pullout from Syria has already raised eyebrows, given the announcement came just hours after the US President hung-up on a phonecall to Turkey’s autocratic President Tayyip Ergodan.

That call had clinched a $US3.5 billion deal to supply Turkey with advanced air defence systems.

Turkey, a NATO ally, is actively oppressing the Kurdish ethnic-religious group in its own country. And it has been attacking the US-allied Kurds in Syria and Iraq whenever it gets the opportunity. Those opportunities will dramatically increase once US forces have withdrawn.
Just one day later, shortly after Defence Secretary Matis resigned over Trump’s treatment of his allies, the President also announced a dramatic withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

The US has been embroiled in Afghanistan since it sent in troops shortly after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on the US mainland. Like Russia and the UK before them, it has met with little success in subduing the mountain tribesmen.

But Trump’s critics warn these abrupt pullouts will produce dramatic power vacuums.

And the likes of Russia, China and Iran will be keen to step in.

Now it seems private armies such as Blackwater may also want a piece of the action.

PRIVATISED CONFLICT
Mercenary groups are no stranger to the Syrian conflict. Russia’s shady Wagner group is believed to have suffered more than 100 casualties when it took part in a Syrian Government attack against an encampment manned by US Marines and Kurdish troops in February.

Wagner defines itself as a “security services” company. But the international community has sanctioned its business operations due to its ongoing activities in Ukraine. It is believed to have several hundred ‘contractors’ fighting in Syria.

Wagner is just one of many such ‘ambiguous’ mercenary groups fighting in the world’s hot spots.

And Blackwater is likewise no stranger to controversy. It was banned from operating in Iraq after its trigger-happy operatives opened fire in a crowded Baghdad public square.

At least 20 civilians were reportedly killed.

Since then Blackwater has attempted to ‘rebrand itself’ with a name change after being sold-off by its original owners.
Now the US Military Times reports Blackwater’s original CEO has been actively lobbying the Trump White House administration. And, according to NBC News, Trump liked the idea.

Blackwater’s founder Erik Prince argues the now 17-year Afghan War is “a total failure.” In the past year, Prince has been using media appearances to promote such a privatisation

Prince, however, has no known official ties to the current incarnation of his old Blackwater, renamed Constellis after being sold to the Apollo Holdings Group. He now heads Hong Kong-based security firm Frontier Services Group.

Prince’s sister, however, is President Trump’s personal appointee to the role of US Secretary of Education — Betsy Devos.

‘MERCHANT OF DEATH’

The old Blackwater, Constellis, is still active in Afghanistan. It has a headquarters — called Camp Integrity — near the Kabul Airport. Military Times says it has leased extra space at the facility in order to accommodate a further 800 personnel.
Again, Prince’s involvement is unknown.

But he has previously told NBC News that he will launch a full-scale media blitz to promote his mercenary agenda, and that Trump and his cabinet will be lobbied.

Prince says he wanted the entire NATO mission scrapped. He claimed he could do the same job with just 6000 privately contracted mercenaries, backed by 2000 international special forces troops.

The idea had been rejected outright by Mattis as Defence Secretary. He saw it as a severe risk to US national security.
“When Americans put their nation’s credibility on the line, privatising it is probably not a wise idea,” Mattis told reporters during a rare appearance in the Pentagon Briefing Room in August.

Mattis also made a veiled warning about the potential impact of mercenary involvement: “It’s enormously easier to be the criminal in a town than it is to be the policeman. And that’s true whether you’re in Ghazni, Afghanistan or anywhere else”.
With his departure, that opinion may no longer hold sway. {Mattis has veiled point; and it is easier to further blind the press, not that they are not near certifiably blind as it is, when you don't report honestly about who is who - like the proxy White Helmets tools who were/are embedded with the proxy Jihadists tools}

US National Security Adviser John Bolton in August said he was open to the idea.

“I’m always open to new ideas,” Bolton said in response to a question on the subject. “I’m not going to comment on what [Trump’s] thinking is. That’ll ultimately be the president’s decision,” he added.

Prince, however, is adamant.

“What I am proposing will end the conflict, save the lives of hundreds of US armed forces personnel (and thousands of Afghans), and will cost only a fraction of what we currently spend. To emphasise, this is not a privatisation of the war effort as has been wrongly stated by my critics. It is actually a reduction in the number of private contractors engaged in Afghanistan,” Prince said in a statement.

Will have to see...

Overreach: Trump's Syria Withdrawal Order Came as Reaction to Admin Hawks Demanding Forever War

The Pompeo-Bolton wing of the administration wanted to stay in Syria forever. This would have been exactly the opposite of why Trump got elected.

pompeo_bolton_0011.jpg

This time it's real. It isn't entirely impossible Trump will reverse himself later on yet again, or qualify the withdrawal in some other way, but for now it is clear that he has indeed given the order to Pentagon to get all its forces out of Syria. This has always been his instinct and inclination, but until now the Empire-first hawks he has surrounded himself with always in the end convinced him to keep the soldiers there after all:

“We know Trump’s instincts from the get-go were to get these guys out of Syria,” Tamara Wittes, a former State Department Middle East official now with the Brookings Institution, told Al-Monitor. “And yet, he has clearly been persuaded at several points 'not yet, ISIS is not quite defeated, but we can use [the troop presence] as leverage against Iran.' He becomes persuaded, and then at a certain point, … he decides enough is enough. He just changes his mind.”

So why is this time different? Here is the answer:

Some current and former US officials faulted what they saw as overreach by administration Iran hawks, in particular US Syria envoy Jim Jeffrey and his lieutenant, Joel Rayburn, the deputy assistant secretary of state for the Levant, who have argued publicly that US forces would not leave Syria until all Iranian forces had left.
“The people who work for [Trump] — Bolton, Rayburn, now Jeffrey — make it worse by adding impossible objectives on Syria [involving Iran] that suggest an indefinite stay,” said the US official who called Trump's decision catastrophic. The official said these arguments have “no connection to realistic objectives for our military” and go “way beyond” the goal of defeating IS and preventing its re-emergence.
“Amb. Jim Jeffrey … has long been advancing a Syria policy divorced from the president’s own views,” Wittes wrote on Twitter. “I don’t fault Jeffrey at all for trying to create some coherence and leverage to achieve desirable outcomes. But it was futile without Trump fully on board.”
“The other big US policy loser here, of course, is Pompeo/Bolton/Hook’s Iran policy of 'maximum pressure,'” Wittes added, referring to US envoy on Iran Brian Hook.

Trump finally and correctly got fed up with Bolton and Bolton-like maniacs in his administration being able to formulate no other idea than to stay in Syria for ever. And for what? This would have done very little to actually hurt Iran but in the meanwhile Trump would have betrayed an election promise. Lord knows he has broken plenty of them, and yet compared to a conventional shyster politician Trump seems to be much less comfortable doing so.

The State Department has cancelled its press briefing for today. Can't imagine why
Mattis at the Pentagon, despite this being an issue of literal war & peace: "I'm not going to make any comments."

And how glorious it is, indeed. The Empire hasn't been in such a shock at least since the Russians-Syrians took back jihadi-controlled Aleppo:

But US officials, speaking not for attribution, and Syria experts who consult with the US administration said that this time they believe Trump’s decision is real, and will not be reversed by a bureaucracy that has urged him to keep US forces in Syria longer.
“This time it’s real and truly catastrophic,” a US official, speaking not for attribution, told Al-Monitor. “The president is just done” and said "leave."
Trump’s decision to withdraw US forces from Syria came in the wake of a phone call between him and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday in which Erdogan said Turkish forces could finish off IS remnants and other terrorist groups, Syria experts said.
Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton met Monday, when Trump was said to formally decide on a US withdrawal from Syria. Multiple US officials argued against an abrupt US withdrawal, but were said to have given up trying to get Trump to change his mind by Tuesday night. US officials began to notify allies of the decision Tuesday.

Israeli official confirms Syria airstrikes as Russia objects

1411646-1840004584.jpg

The ministry, which did not specify which flights had been threatened, added that Syrian air defenses had destroyed 14 of 16 Israeli missiles launched. (File/AFP)

  • Israel also destroyed a Syrian anti-aircraft battery that fired at the Israeli planes: official
  • Lebanon’s acting Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos later on Wednesday confirmed Russia’s account

JERUSALEM: An Israeli security official on Wednesday confirmed responsibility for overnight airstrikes in Syria, saying the air force had hit a series of targets involved in Iranian arms transfers to the Hezbollah militant group.

Russia had criticized the airstrike, saying it endangered civilian flights. The comments highlighted the increasingly tense relations between Israel and Russia, which have grown strained since the September downing of a Russian plane by Syrian forces responding to another Israeli raid.

The Israeli official said the air force had attacked several Iranian targets in three main locations late Tuesday and early Wednesday. He said the targets were primarily storage and logistics facilities used by archenemy Iran to ship weapons to Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Lebanese group that fought Israel in a 2006 war.

He said Israel also destroyed a Syrian anti-aircraft battery that fired at the Israeli planes, and claimed that Iranian forces are operating less than 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Israeli border, contrary to Russian assurances.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity under standard Israeli security protocols. The military has not commented on the incident.

Earlier Wednesday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that six Israeli F-16 jets launched a “provocative” raid at the moment when two civilian airliners were preparing to land in Damascus and Beirut, creating a “direct threat” to the aircraft.

Lebanon’s acting Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos later on Wednesday confirmed Konashenkov’s account, saying the two airplanes in Lebanese airspace “narrowly” escaped Israeli warplanes, averting a “human catastrophe.”

Fenianos said the Lebanese government will present a complaint to the UN Security Council.

The Syrian military didn’t fully engage its air defense assets to avoid accidentally hitting the passenger jets, Konashenkov said. He added that Syrian air traffic controllers redirected the Damascus-bound plane to a Russian air base in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia.

Konashenkov said the Syrian air defense forces shot down 14 of the 16 precision-guided bombs dropped by the Israeli jets, while the remaining two hit a Syrian military depot 7 kilometers (about 4 miles) west of Damascus, injuring three Syrian soldiers.
But the Israeli official said all targets had been hit, in some cases causing secondary explosions. He said errant Syrian anti-aircraft fire had endangered the civilian flights.

In recent years, Israel has acknowledged carrying out scores of airstrikes in neighboring Syria, most believed to have been aimed at suspected Iranian arms shipments to Hezbollah. Iran and Hezbollah have sent forces to Syria to bolster President Bashar Assad, who appears close to victory after a devastating seven-year civil war.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said Israel will not allow Iran to establish a permanent military presence in postwar Syria.

That mission has been complicated by the Sept. 17 downing of the Russian reconnaissance aircraft by Syrian fire. Russia, which also backs Assad, has blamed Israel for the friendly-fire mishap and reportedly scaled back a hotline that allowed the two air forces to coordinate and avoid unintended clashes.

Russia also sent Syria sophisticated S-300 anti-aircraft missiles, though the Israeli official said an older system was fired at the Israeli planes in Wednesday’s incident.

Israeli officials have also expressed concern about US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw US forces from Syria. The US presence has given Israel an extra element of protection.

Speaking at a military ceremony Wednesday, Netanyahu said the US withdrawal will not change his policy.

Although he did not directly mention the airstrikes, he said Israel’s air force has unmatched capabilities and can reach arenas “near and far, very far.”

“We are not prepared to accept the Iranian military entrenchment in Syria, which is directed against us. We will act against it vigorously and continuously, including during the current period,” he told a graduation ceremony of new air force pilots.

Addressing the same ceremony, Israel’s military chief, Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, praised the army’s “many important accomplishments,” including “thwarting the expansion of Iranian influence.”

The Syrian Foreign Ministry accused Israel of exacerbating the crisis in the country and standing in the way of the government’s war on terrorism.

In messages sent to the UN secretary-general and the president of the Security Council, the ministry said the Israeli airstrike wouldn’t have been launched if it wasn’t for what it called “unlimited” US support for Israel.

Civilian Flights Into And Out of Lebanon Must be Re-routed to Avoid an Israel Authored Tragedy - Eurasia Future

The best way to prevent a horrific man-made “accident” would be to make it so that it could never happen in the first place. Specifically, as Israel’s Russian partner confirmed with dismay that Tel Aviv’s fighter jets used civilian aircraft flying over the Syria-Lebanon border as “shields” during a recent aerial attack on Damascus, several horrific scenarios unfolded

Geopolitical expert Andrews Korybko summarizes the danger based on a very recent tragic friendly fire incident in the region in the following way:

“It’s paradoxical that the “IAF” might be so concerned about the safety of its pilots that it would put dozens of civilian air travelers at risk, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that it did this exact same thing back in September vis-a-vis a Russian spy plane but with dramatically different results. At that time, a Syrian S-200 operator fired a missile that an “Israeli” pilot narrowly avoided by executing a midair tactical maneuver that tricked the armament into hitting the Russian spy plane “shield” instead”.

Therefore it can be concluded beyond any reasonable doubt that there was a chance that Syria could have accidentally downed a civilian jetliner in its attempts to defend against an Israeli air attack, in the same way that when Damascus defended against the last major Israeli air attack, Syria accidentally shot down an allied Russian spy plane.

Beyond this though, as the accidental downing of the Russian plane makes it clear, the aircraft that Israel’s attacking fighters use as shields are in clear and present danger every time Israel’s air force employs this deeply unethical manoeuvre. But taking things a step further, knowing that Israel has been privately upset about the current US withdrawal from Syrian territory, it can be safely assumed that Tel Aviv will do just about anything it can to convince the US to go back on its decision. In exploring the admittedly extreme options that Israel might take, I stated in an earlier piece that Israel staging a provocation against NATO member Turkey or its allies in Syria could be one such method used by Tel Aviv a force the US back into the conflict.

Yet an even more horrifying scenario exists. While Turkey’s powerful military is well prepared to fight back against such an Israeli provocation if necessary, by engineering a scenario wherein Syria accidentally shoots down a civilian airliner and possibly killing hundreds in the process, while Israel would have crossed yet another line into severely immoral behavior, its powerful ally would inevitably take a different view. Because the US never typically holds Israel to account for its criminal actions, while Russia realistically does not do so either (apart from the occasional rhetorical slap on the wrist), such a provoked atrocity could set Israel up to ask the US to attack western Syria and under such a situation the US might oblige. Under such a worst case scenario, Israel could likely convince the US to blame Syria (and by extrapolation Russia) for a provocation that objectively was engineered by Tel Aviv.

While western Syria still has the proverbial “life insurance policy” of multiple Russian men and weapons on its territory that neither the US nor Israel would dare to attack, the US did twice attack western Syria (albeit with limited results) in the spring of 2018 as well as in the spring of 2017. At a time when multiple factions in Syria and the Astana trio of Turkey, Russia and Iran are firmly focused on forming a constitutional committee to draft a new Syrian Constitution that will form the basis of new elections held in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 – the last thing that anyone wants (except Israel) is an escalation in any military action in the country.

With all of this in mind, it would seem that the only option possible that could be taken to save human life that is being recklessly endangered by Israel’s cowardly behaviour, is to re-route all civilian flights approaching the busy Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport so that incoming flights enter Lebanese airspace from the north rather than the east. Of course this will increase flight times, costs to air carriers and inconvenience some people, but this is ultimately a small price to pay given Israel’s track record of negligence when it comes to using civilian aircraft as shields during its acts of aggression against a neighbouring state.

At the time when MH-17 was shot down over Donbass, I went on record saying that such a flight should have never been allowed to fly over a war zone where it was well known that missiles capable of downing an aircraft were in full operation. Ultimately, it was this negligent act of routing the doomed flight over that war zone that could have and should have presented the last clear chance to avoid the tragedy that unfolded. Sadly, air traffic controllers did not take advantage of the last clear chance available to them and tragedy struck.

Lebanese authorities must therefore work with international partners to temporarily re-route all incoming and outgoing civilian air traffic as anything less would represent a substantial risk that is simply not worth taking.

2018-12-27 - Israeli warplanes return to Syrian border after Damascus strikes
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...turn-to-syrian-border-after-damascus-strikes/

The Israeli Air Force has returned to the Syrian-Lebanese border after launching airstrikes over western Damascus on Christmas.

According to a source in Damascus city, Israeli warplanes were spotted flying along the Syrian border with Lebanon’s Jabal Al-Sheikh (var. Mount Hermon) region.

The source said that the Israeli warplane had entered Lebanon’s Nabatieh Governorate in the south before making their way to the Jabal Al-Sheikh region this evening.

The last time the Israeli Air Force launched an attack on western Damascus, they used this flight path from southern Lebanon.

2018-12-27 - Syrian military denies Israeli claims of bombing Iranian base
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-military-denies-israeli-claims-of-bombing-iranian-base/

A source from the Syrian military told Al-Masdar News on Thursday that Israel’s claims of bombing an Iranian base in west Damascus are false.

According to the source in Damascus city, the Israeli military struck the 4th Armored Division’s ammo storage in the large town of Qatana.

The source said no Iranian and Hezbollah military personnel were at the 4th Armored Division base, adding that only Syrian soldiers were present at the time of the bombing.

As a result of the Israeli Air Force attack on the town of Qatana, one Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldier was killed and three others were badly wounded.

The Israeli Air Force managed to destroy the 4th Armored Division’s base on Christmas, causing several explosions that could be heard from as Damascus city.

The Syrian, Lebanese, and Russian governments have all condemned the Israeli attack, while accusing them over using civilian airplanes as cover when facing the Syrian military’s air defenses.

Israel has confirmed carrying out the airstrikes in Syria on Christmas; they would also deny using the civilian airplanes for cover during the attack.

2018-12-27 - Turkey reveals locations of French military bases in Syria
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/turkey-reveals-locations-of-french-military-bases-in-syria/

For the second time this year, the Turkish state-owned media has revealed the locations of the French military bases in Syria.

“In four of nine military locations the French are protected by Americans, and in the rest, they operate under the protection of PKK,” the Anadolu Agency said.

The article highlighted the French bases that were mostly located in Syria’s northeastern region, including the border governorate of Al-Hasakah.

According to an article from state-owned Anadolu Agency, a total of 200 French soldiers that are located in the Coalition areas are mostly reliant on the U.S. troops for logistical support.

Previously, the Anadolu Agency released the locations of the French bases in the Deir Ezzor Governorate.

These bases in Deir Ezzor were mostly controlled by the U.S. military, but they allowed for the French Army to use these installations in the battle against the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh).

2018-12-27 - Google forced to delete custom-made map of Kurdistan amid pressure from Turkey
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...e-map-of-kurdistan-amid-pressure-from-turkey/

Google has taken out a map of Kurdistan from My Maps, a service that enables users to create custom maps with their own notes and lines.

The map in question showed the borders of Kurdistan, a historical region inhabited predominantly by Kurds, superimposed on the borders of Turkey, Syria, and Iran.

According to the Kurdistan-based media group Rudaw, the tech giant’s move came in response to a complaint from the Turkish government — something that a senior official has confirmed.

“The Information Technology and Communications Body (BTK) has met with the platform [Google]’s relevant representatives for the immediate removal of the mentioned map as part of their obligations in terms of national and international legislation”, said Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Cahit Turan.

Yavuz Agiralioglu, an MP from the right-wing İyi Parti (Good Party), complained that the map violated the Turkish borders, accusing it of being “at the service of terrorist organizations”.

“The most dangerous Turk is the one looking at the map. We laid the Earth flat under our feet and only walked… Let those who fancy dividing our country with fake maps look at our historical record”, the nationalist MP said, apparently nodding at the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

The Kurds are an ethnic minority group living in parts of Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran — and are considered the largest stateless nation in the world. There are an estimated 15 million Kurds in Turkey (over 18 percent of the country’s population).

Various Kurdish insurgent groups have sought autonomy or even separation from Turkey for decades, but authorities in Ankara have opposed the creation of a separate Kurdish state.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which demands the establishment of an independent Kurdistan, has been at war with the government since 1984 and is designated as a terrorist organization in Turkey.

December 26, 2018 - US Withdrawal from Syria Paves Way for Israeli Strikes
US Withdrawal from Syria Paves Way for Israeli Strikes - Global Research

The US suddenly and unexpectedly announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria after years of illegally occupying the country. The US presence aimed at ousting the Syrian government, boosting militant groups the US and its partners have armed and backed since the 2011 conflict started, and denying Damascus access to its own resources, particularly oil concentrated east of the Euphrates River.

The US occupation of Syria is only one part of a much larger, decades-long campaign of achieving, maintaining, and expanding US hegemony across North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia – as well as the ultimate goal of encircling and containing both Russia and China.

A genuine withdrawal from the Syrian conflict would signal a seismic shift in US foreign policy and mark an irreversible decline in American hegemony.

It is difficult to believe such a seismic shift could happen, and so suddenly.

It is also a shift not founded in US foreign policy or fact.

There are several key possibilities to consider:
  • A US withdrawal paves way for unilateral Israeli strikes;
  • It also paves the way for an expanded Turkish incursion;
  • US troops won’t be on the ground as targets in the immediate aftermath of any wider conflict Israel or Turkey provokes;
  • US troops can re-enter theater with renewed pretext to fight Damascus directly in defense of allies Israel or Turkey and;
  • US troops can re-enter theater along the better formed and protected front Turkey seeks to create.
The above possibilities are drawn not from speculation, but from multiple US policy papers spanning decades.

US Withdrawal From Syria Removes Obstructions to Escalation, Not Peace
US policymakers have drawn up plans for years regarding US primacy in the Middle East. In the 2009 policy paper published by corporate-financier funded think tank – the Brookings Institution – the use of US proxies like Israel to carry out major attacks on Iran were given its own chapter.

However, the only obstruction to this option was the necessity of Israeli warplanes to fly over either US-ally Jordan or US-occupied Iraq.

The report would claim under a chapter titled, “Leave it to Bibi: Allowing or Encouraging an Israeli Military Strike” (.pdf) that (emphasis added):

An Israeli air campaign against Iran would have a number of very important differences from an American campaign. First, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has the problem of overflight transit from Israel to Iran. Israel has no aircraft carriers, so its planes must take off from Israeli air bases. It also does not possess long-range bombers like the B-1 or B-2, or huge fleets of refueling tankers, all of which means that unlike the United States, Israel cannot avoid flying through someone’s air space. The most direct route from Israel to Iran’s Natanz facility is roughly 1,750 kilometers across Jordan and Iraq. As the occupying power in Iraq, the United States is responsible for defending Iraqi airspace.
It would also state (emphasis added):

From the American perspective, this negates the whole point of the option—distancing the United States from culpability—and it could jeopardize American efforts in Iraq, thus making it a possible nonstarter for Washington. Finally, Israeli violation of Jordanian airspace would likely create political problems for King Abdullah of Jordan, one of America’s (and Israel’s) closest Arab friends in the region. Thus it is exceedingly unlikely that the United States would allow Israel to overfly Iraq, and because of the problems it would create for Washington and Amman, it is unlikely that Israel would try to fly over Jordan.
And finally, the Brookings paper would claim (emphasis added):

An Israeli attack on Iran would directly affect key American strategic interests. If Israel were to overfly Iraq, both the Iranians and the vast majority of people around the world would see the strike as abetted, if not authorized, by the United States. Even if Israel were to use another route, many Iranians would still see the attack as American supported or even American orchestrated. After all, the aircraft in any strike would be American produced, supplied, and funded F-15s and F-16s, and much of the ordnance would be American made. In fact, $3 billion dollars in U.S. assistance annually sustains the IDF’s conventional superiority in the region.
Thus, by removing US troops from Iraq regarding 2009 US plans to have Israel strike Iran then – or to have US troops withdrawn from Syria to distance the US from culpability ahead of Israeli strikes in the near future – the US can remove this critical obstruction toward greater escalation and even major war – not toward peace.

As to what the US would do in the wake of a supposedly “unilateral” Israeli strike – Brookings had an answer for that too (emphasis added):

However, as noted in the previous chapter, the airstrikes themselves are really just the start of this policy. Again, the Iranians would doubtless rebuild their nuclear sites. They would probably retaliate against Israel, and they might retaliate against the United States, too (which might create a pretext for American airstrikes or even an invasion). And it seems unlikely that they would cease their support for violent extremist groups or efforts to overturn the regional status quo in the aftermath of Israeli airstrikes. Their opposition to an Arab-Israeli peace treaty would likely be redoubled. Hence the United States would still need a strategy to handle Iran after completion of the Israeli airstrikes, and this could mean a much longer time frame to achieve all of America’s goals.
This policy within a Syrian context could mean major, unprecedented Israeli strikes on Syrian targets – a major escalation from previous and more limited strikes – but avoiding Russian targets, under the assumption Moscow will fall short of retaliating to avoid full-scale war.

Israel has already made its intentions clear that it will continue confronting “Iran” in Syria after the withdrawal of US forces.

Any retaliation by Damascus – real or staged – will be used to bring the US back into the conflict with a wider claimed pretext to take on Damascus directly – with the added benefit of not having US troops on the ground serving as easy targets in the immediate fallout of a much larger conflict.

Turkey Too?
There is also Turkey to consider – a nation that has played a central role in facilitating the proxy war against Syria since it began in 2011. US policymakers have included Turkey in tandem with Israel as two coordinating pressure points against Damascus for decades.

A 1983 document signed by former CIA officer Graham Fuller titled, “Bringing Real Muscle to Bear Against Syria” (PDF), states (their emphasis):

Syria at present has a hammerlock on US interests both in Lebanon and in the Gulf — through closure of Iraq’s pipeline thereby threatening Iraqi internationalization of the [Iran-Iraq] war. The US should consider sharply escalating the pressures against Assad [Sr.] through covertly orchestrating simultaneous military threats against Syria from three border states hostile to Syria: Iraq, Israel and Turkey.
The report also states:

If Israel were to increase tensions against Syria simultaneously with an Iraqi initiative, the pressures on Assad would escalate rapidly. A Turkish move would psychologically press him further.
More recently, US policymakers in 2012 Brookings Institution document titled, “Saving Syria: Assessing Options for Regime Change” (PDF), which stated (emphasis added):

Some voices in Washington and Jerusalem are exploring whether Israel could contribute to coercing Syrian elites to remove Asad.
The report continues by explaining (emphasis added):

Israel could posture forces on or near the Golan Heights and, in so doing, might divert regime forces from suppressing the opposition. This posture may conjure fears in the Asad regime of a multi-front war, particularly if Turkey is willing to do the same on its border and if the Syrian opposition is being fed a steady diet of arms and training. Such a mobilization could perhaps persuade Syria’s military leadership to oust Asad in order to preserve itself.
Regarding events on the ground now – Turkey is already signaling its intentions to enter Syria east of the Euphrates and expand its military occupation across more Syrian territory.

Turkish forces entering into Syria would serve as a front against Syrian forces in the outbreak of wider war with supply lines protected all the way to the Turkish border and deep into Turkish territory. US forces re-entering the theater can do so from Turkey and avoid being cut off in US bases currently scattered across eastern Syria.

Whether or not Russia and Iran have created a sufficient amount of incentives and deterrents to place between Turkey and its continued role in destabilizing Syria since then remains to be seen. Only Moscow, Tehran, and Damascus can know what deals they have with Ankara and where its apparent plans to enter Syrian territory fit into them.

Empire Dies Hard
US involvement in Syria was always aimed at eventually undermining, encircling, containing, and eventually overthrowing first Iran, then closing around Russia further.

Unless we are to believe the US has abandoned its wider hegemonic ambitions – and there is no evidence to suggest that it has – it is irrational and ill-advised to believe the US is truly walking away from Syria without plans to dangerously escalate the conflict while minimizing its own culpability.

The United States has gone from an uncontested global superpower at the end of the Cold War, to an increasing dangerous, desperate fading hegemon today. The weaker it appears, the more unpredictable and dangerous its actions are becoming. A genuine withdrawal from Syria would neither fit America’s current global ambitions, nor fit its recent pattern of increasingly dangerous and desperate policies implemented from Eastern Europe to the Middle East and North Africa, into Central Asia, and across East Asia.

A skeptical public leaves no room for the US to capitalize on the apparent “good will” the US is trying to cultivate through its supposed withdrawal from Syria ahead of provocations by proxy it will have fully underwritten and will immediately move to exploit toward greater war.

Kuwait latest country to reopen embassy in Syria

In the course of 24 hours, two Arab nations have announced their intention to reopen their embassies in Syria after a seven year hiatus.

According to a government source in Damascus, Kuwait will reopen their embassy in Syria in the next 10-14 days.

Kuwait’s decision comes shortly after Bahrain announced that they were reopening their embassy in Damascus after closing it more than seven years ago.

On Thursday afternoon, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reopened their embassy during a brief ceremony that was held in Damascus.

The Syrian government is now working to restore diplomatic ties with the remaining Arab states that suspended their ties with Damascus.

Turkish Delegation in Moscow to Raise Issue of Syria Airspace Use - Reports

The delegation from Turkey is set to arrive in the Russian capital on 29 December to discuss the situation in Syria with Russian officials. This comes on the heels of reports that US forces are set to leave the war torn country.

According to the Hurriyet newspaper, the issue of using Syrian airspace after the US pull-out will be on the table during the Russian-Turkish talks.

The revelation comes amid an alleged Israel strike on targets near the Syrian capital of Damascus earlier this week.

Syrian state media SANA reported that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) hit targets with missiles in Damascus suburbs from Lebanese airspace, but added most of the projectiles had been shot down. The attack left three servicemen wounded and caused damage to an ammunition depot, the agency said.

The Russian Defence Ministry has slammed the IDF's actions as provocative, describing the airstrikes as a flagrant violation of Syria's sovereignty and UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 1701 on the Israel-Lebanon conflict. The ministry stressed that two passenger planes landing at Damascus airport during the assault were exposed to “direct threat”.

Although an Israeli official has confirmed the attack on condition of anonymity, the IDF have yet to comment on the issue.

Earlier in December, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to continue anti-Iran operations in Syria after the US move to pull its 2,000 servicemen from the Arab Republic.

Israeli warplanes return to Syrian border after Damascus strikes

On Christmas, the Israeli Air Force launched a powerful attack on the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) 4th Armored Division base in the western Damascus town of Qatana.

As a result of this attack by the Israeli Air Force, at least three Syrian Arab Army soldiers were badly wounded after a projectile hit their military post at the 4th Armored Division base.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...-control-over-areas-they-have-withdrawn-from/

The official media wing of the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) issued a statement on Friday morning that called on the Syrian government forces to assert control over the areas they have withdrawn from.

“We invite the Syrian government forces to assert control over the areas our forces have withdrawn from, in particularly Manbij, and to protect these areas against a Turkish invasion,” the YPG’s official Twitter account said.

The new statement does not clarify which areas the YPG has withdrawn from, nor does it mention the fate of Manbij city, which is currently a target for the Turkish military and their rebel allies in northern the region of Syria.

A short while ago, pro-government activists began reporting that that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) had entered the city of Manbij after an agreement was made with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) this morning.

The Syrian and Russian forces are preparing to enter the key city of Manbij in northeast Aleppo after an agreement was made with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

According to a Syrian military officer near Manbij, the SAA and Russian Army are making their way to the city to help setup joint checkpoints with the Manbij Military Council of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

While the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Unit (YPG) will be withdrawing from Manbij, the SDF Arab fighters inside the city will remain and help protect the city.

Earlier today, the YPG announced that it invited the Syrian government forces to enter Manbij in order to help them protect the country’s sovereignty from a Turkish military invasion.

The Syrian Arab Army did not issue an official statement regarding the agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces; however, they have been in talks on Manbij for several days now.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) support the Syrian army’s entry into Manbij to protect the Syrian territory from possible invasion by Turkey, SDF spokeswoman Jihan Ahmed told Sputnik.

“We are in favour of the Syrian army’s entry into Manbij to protect Syria because if Turkey comes somewhere, it stays there”, Ahmed said, stressing that the Kurds and the Syrian government were “one family.”

The statement comes the same day as the Syrian army entered Manbij after it received a request from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to take control over the city amid Turkey’s plans to launch a military operation there.

Earlier in December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey was ready to launch a military operation against Kurdish fighters in Manbij if the United States did not remove the militia from there.

Erdogan later noted that the start of the operation was postponed following a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, who decided to withdraw US troops from Syria last week.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...of-running-psychological-operation-in-manbij/

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) of running a “psychological operation” in Manbij, claiming that the situation is still unclear.

Erdogan said that his regime’s primary objective was to force the terrorists to leave Syria, adding that he wanted the Kurdish forces to “learn a lesson” inside the country.

Furthermore, Erdogan claimed that if the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and People’s Protection Units (YPG) leave Manbij, then his armed forces will not launch any attack.

If they [terrorist organizations] leave the area, we will have nothing left to do there”, he added.

Erdogan’s comments come just a few hours after the Syrian Arab Army declared that they reached a deal with the Syrian Democratic Forces in Manbij.

Since then, the Turkish regime has doubted the legitimacy of this deal, claiming that the Syrian military was running a “psychological warfare” campaign.

Riyadh Sees No Obstacles For Syria's Reinstatement in Arab League - Reports

Syrian membership in a major regional organisation was suspended in 2011 amid an emerging internal conflict. Following a brief presence by the Syrian National Coalition's representative in the league, the Arab Republic's place was kept vacant.

Riyadh has informed other Arab states that sees no obstacles to reinstating Syria's membership in the Arab League, Al Mayadeen reported citing an anonymous diplomatic source within Saudi Arabia.

Damascus' membership in the Arab League was suspended on 16 November 2011 as most of its members closed their embassies in the Arab Republic and imposed economic sanctions on the country. The reason for this was that these states opposed the government's violent crackdown on opposition protesters.

US seeks to shift responsibility with troop withdrawal from Syria – Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that US President’s Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw American troops from Syria means Washington is attempting to shift the responsibility of the conflict’s settlement to other coalition members, speaking at a joint press conference with his Jordanian counterpart in Moscow on Friday.

“When it comes to the deployment on the ground, I refer to the French, British, German soldiers, whose presence there is also illegitimate. The coalition’s air force is also deployed there,” he said.

Speaking about Turkey’s plans to launch an offensive on Manbij, Lavrov said that Russia views it as “extra anti-terrorist actions in the Syrian East.”

Al-Safadi on his part praised Russia’s efforts and the countries’ engagement in the Syrian conflict settlement.

He also mentioned the Rukban refugee camp on the border with Jordan, saying that the only way to improve the situation is “to work out a common mechanism which would allow the Syrian refugees to return home as early as possible.”

“We hope that together with Russia and the USA within the framework of the trilateral talks we will manage to make certain progress on this matter,” al-Safadi concluded.

The SAA’s step was also praised by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Bahram Qassemi, who said that the step is essential to resolve the protracted crisis in the war torn country.

“Emphasizing the need to respect the national sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Syria, the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the rise of the Syrian national flag in the city of Manbij and regards it as an important step to consolidate the sovereignty of the legitimate government of Syria and a new step to resolve the crisis in the country,” Qassemi said in a statement, according to the Iranian Tasnim news agency.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan questioned the deployment of the SAA in Manbij and described it as a “psychological operation.” However, he stressed that Turkey will not intervene in the city, if Kurdish forces withdraw for real.

Manbij is now witnessing one of the tensest stand-offs in the history of the Syrian war. While Turkey and its proxies are massing around the strategic city, many units of the SAA, Kurdish forces, local forces, US forces, Russian forces and even French forces are holding onto their positions inside Manbij and around it.

A fresh photo has appeared online showing a Russian soldier with a patch of the Manbij Military Council of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF is a Kurdish-dominated group which controls the area of Manbij as well as most of northeastern Syria.

On December 28, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which are the core of the SDF, announced that they are inviting the Syrian Army to take control of Manbij to protect it from a possible Turkish invasion.

A group of Russian and Syrian troops were already deployed in the village of Arima, west of Manbij, earlier this week.

Jaysh Al-Islam sends large convoy to Manbij front-lines

The situation around Manbij is heating up as several Turkish-backed rebel groups head to the front-lines.

Jaysh Al-Islam has now begun amassing their forces at the Manbij front-lines, sending a large number of fighters and vehicles to the northern axis of the city.

Similar to the Hamza Division, Jaysh Al-Islam is a veteran rebel group that participated in the long battle for the East Ghouta region of Damascus.

Since they lost the East Ghouta battle, Jaysh Al-Islam has been active in the Afrin region of Aleppo, where they have carved out a new area of influence near the Turkish border.

The Facebook page “Manbij Arabiya” reported that U.S. Coalition helicopters were seen flying above the city, as the Syrian Arab Army gathers to enter the area.

As of now, the Syrian Arab Army has yet to officially enter the city; it appears they are awaiting go-ahead from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Manbij Military Council.

Once the Manbij Military Council approves their entry, the Syrian Arab Army will begin conducting joint patrols with the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The press service added that the sides also discussed US plans to withdraw troops from Syria.

Moreover, Putin and Merkel exchanged opinions on the situation in the Kerch Strait after three Ukrainian warships violated Russia's state borders on November 25.

The Russian president and the German chancellor wished each other happy New Year and agreed to maintain contacts.

US Backs Israeli Airstrikes on Iranian Targets Across Middle East - State Dept.

The United States fully supports Israel’s right to protect itself from Iranian adventurism in the region that threatens the existence of the Jewish state, and Washington will guarantee that Israel has the means to do so, the US Department of State said in a press release on Friday.

"Iranian support of and supply to terrorist groups in Syria and across the region that have the clear intent and capability to strike Israel are unacceptable," the release said. "The United States fully supports Israel's right to defend itself against the Iranian regime’s aggressive adventurism, and we will continue to ensure that Israel has the military capacity to do so decisively".

Earlier in the week, Israeli jets bombed targets near the Syrian capital of Damascus for the first time since US President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of about 2,000 US forces in Syria.

Israel is believed to have hit a Syrian weapons depot and a separate weapons storage facility controlled by Iranian forces, according to published reports.

In response to the Syrian Arab Army’s announcement regarding Manbij, the U.S. Coalition tweeted on Friday afternoon that these claims are untrue.

“Despite incorrect information about changes to military forces in the city of Manbij, Syria, #CJTFOIR has seen no indication that these claims are true. We call on everyone to respect the integrity of Manbij and the safety of its citizens,” the U.S. Coalition tweeted on Friday.
A photo from Manbij would later be released by local activists, confirming that the U.S. Coalition was still active inside of the city.

France admits military presence in N.Syria

The French General Staff Office confirmed on Friday that French ground forces have served in northern Syria.

The office responded to reporters' questions on whether France has its land forces in northern Syria and how it supports YPG/PKK.

The statement revealed that the French Army has been fighting Daesh terrorists since 2014 through a series of military operations from land, air and sea.

Some 1,100 French soldiers have been serving in the Middle East, the military said.

Anadolu Agency reported previously that since March 30, the French Army has expanded its military action spots from five to nine in Syria.

According to reliable local sources, roughly 200 French soldiers have coordinated with YPG/PKK terrorists. But France had previously denied military presence in northern Syria.

The statement also reaffirmed that the U.S. withdrawal from Syria will not affect its ongoing military operation called “Chammal” in Syria.

TURKEY, FRANCE AND U.S. ARE PLOTTING TO HAND SYRIA’S BORDER TO FSA

Turkey, France and the U.S. are planning to reconstruct the Syrian Elite Forces (SEF), a Free Syrian Army (FSA) group, and deploy it on the Syrian-Turkish border east of Euphrates River as an alternative for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mehdi al-Jaila, leader of the SEF told the Hammurabi’s Justice News blog on December 28.

The blog, which is well-known for its close ties to the US-led coalition, has not provided additional information about the Turkish-French-American plan so far. Furthermore, the SDF is yet to comment on al-Jaila’s statement.

The SEF is the military wing of the Syria’s Tomorrow Movement (STM), which is headed by opposition figure Ahmad Jarba. Since its formation in 2016, the armed group has been working with the SDF under the command of the US-led coalition.

Last May, the SDF attacked a unit of the SEF after it refused to hand over its weapons. The conflict was seen as an attempt to neutralize the Arab group.

Jarba has very close ties to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. However, he resumed his relations with Turkey recently and made several trips to the country, where he discussed the future of the Syrian-Turkish border, according to Syrian opposition sources.

It’s not clear yet if the supposed plan will be supported by Egypt, Saudi Arab or even the SDF who are currently closer to the axis of the Damascus government.

Militants burning bodies of refugees left without help in Syria’s Rukban — source

Militants are burning the bodies of refugees who died in the Rukban camp after they had not received help from the last humanitarian convoy which the terrorists did not let pass, a military-diplomatic source told journalists on Saturday.

"Our means of monitoring are registering dense smoke near the Rukban camp where the tent camps of the militants are located. They are destroying something actively there. There is every reason to believe that these may be the Rukban refugees who did not receive any help from the last humanitarian convoy and died from hunger and diseases," the source said.

The Rukban refugee camp is located in the Al-Tanf security area, where a US military base is located. Militants from opposition groups are blocking the perimeter in the security zone and do not let the UN and the Syrian government’s humanitarian convoys enter the camp.

There are about 50,000 refugees in the camp now, according to the global organization.

The high-level talks between Russia and Turkey on Syria were useful, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

"We held a very useful meeting of our interdepartmental team: the foreign and defense ministers and the intelligence services’ chiefs," he said.

"Following the agreements, which were reached by our presidents, we discussed further steps to implement those tasks, which were outlined in the Astana format, primarily in the context of fighting terrorism, resolving humanitarian issues and creating conditions for refugees’ return," Lavrov added.

The high-level talks between Russia and Turkey on the situation in Syria were held in Moscow on Saturday. Russia was represented, in addition to Lavrov, by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Head Sergei Naryshkin and Chief of Russia’s General Staff Valery Gerasimov. The Turkish delegation included Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin, National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Head of the National Intelligence Organization Hakan Fidan.

Turkey intends to continue close cooperation with Russia and Iran in Syria, Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Saturday after negotiations in Moscow.

"Ankara and Moscow share the opinion that it is necessary to destroy all terrorist organizations in Syria. We will continue close cooperation with Russia and Iran on Syria and regional issues," Anadolu Agency quoted the foreign minister as saying.

Ankara remains committed to Syria’s territorial integrity and is ready to counter attempts to undermine it, he said.

"As the guarantors of the Astana process, we are certainly committed to the territorial integrity and unity of Syria and are ready to deter any actions aimed at undermining these principles," the Turkish foreign minister said.

Cavusoglu added that Turkey and Russia had also discussed issues related to the fight against terrorism. "We confirmed our readiness and determination to continue the fight in order to liberate Syria from this scourge," he said. "Today, the defense and foreign ministers discussed the steps our countries have taken within the Astana process, as well as further steps in this direction," the Turkish top diplomat noted.

According to Cavusoglu, the meeting’s participants also touched upon the implementation of the Memorandum on setting up a demilitarized zone in Syria’s Idlib. "We considered the actions we will take to implement the memorandum and resolve issues that may emerge along the way," he said. "We believe that the document has made it possible to ensure stability, thus significantly contributing to efforts to advance the political process," he added.

The Turkish top diplomat also pointed out that the four ministers had exchanged views on the situation "surrounding the United States’ plans to withdraw troops from Syria." "We discussed ways to coordinate our joint efforts given the circumstances," Cavusoglu noted.

On December 19, US President Donald Trump ordered a full withdrawal of US troops from Syria. According to US officials, the troop pullout will take 60 to 100 days.

The agency reported that the Russian-Turkish negotiations in Russian capital lasted an hour and a half. The Turkish delegation was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu, Presidential Press Secretary Ibrahim Kalin, Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar and Chief of the National Intelligence Organization Hakan Fidan. The Russian side was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov. The Russian and Turkish presidential representatives and foreign and defense ministers discussed the situation in northeastern Syria.

On December 12, the Turkish president reported the intention to start an operation in the coming days against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units and the Democratic Union, which Ankara considers to be the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River. Before that, Turkey already held two military operations on Syrian territory: Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Olive Branch, as a result of which a buffer zone of security was created between the bordering cities of Azaz and Jarabulus, and the Afrin region, which is populated by Kurds, was occupied.

On December 19, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan stated that the Turkish Armed Forces ended the preparations for a possible operation in Syria. However, following the decision to start the withdrawal of US forces from Syria declared by US President Donald Trump on December 19, Ankara said that Washington’s move postponed the operation.

Russia hopes West not to hamper efforts to set up Syrian constitutional committee

Russia hopes that Western countries will not hinder the efforts of Moscow, Ankara and Tehran to set up a Syrian constitutional committee, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday after the Russian-Turkish high-level talks.

"We are very hopeful that nobody will hamper our subsequent efforts, including our Western colleagues who have been urging the Astana troika so firmly and persistently in recent months to finish sooner the work on the constitutional committee," he said.

"It has been stated that Russia and Turkey alongside our Iranian colleagues have done everything we had promised for the formation of the constitutional committee which is due to start work in Geneva," Lavrov said. "We have achieved it through intense mediatory efforts between [Syria’s] government and opposition made by our countries’ governments."

"We will do our utmost so that this constitutional committee can start functioning as soon as possible, now with new UN Special Envoy for Syria Mr. [Geir] Pedersen, who, as far as I know, takes over in early January," the Russian foreign minister stressed.

On January 30, the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, held in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, agreed to set up a constitutional committee that will be tasked with drafting a new constitution for Syria. It is expected to include delegates from the Syrian government, the opposition and the civic society. UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura spoke in favor of having no more than 50 people on the committee.

MOSCOW: Russia said Friday it will host a three-way summit with Turkey and Iran on the Syrian conflict early next year, after Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov voiced skepticism about an announced withdrawal of US forces.

“It's our turn to host the summit... around the first week of the year. This will depend on the schedules of the presidents” of the three countries, deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov was cited as saying by Interfax news agency.

The last meeting between Russia's Vladimir Putin, Iran's Hassan Rouhani and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan took place in Iran in September.

Lavrov refused to comment Friday on the US announcement, saying he was “waiting for actions to follow words.”

“The Americans don't always do what they promise, far from it,” Lavrov said. “Washington clearly wants to pass on the responsibilities on the ground to its partners in the coalition.”

A Turkish delegation that includes Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Defense Minister Hulusi Akar is due in Moscow on Saturday to discuss the US pullout.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov hailed the entry on Friday by Syrian forces into the key northern city of Manbij for the first time in six years after Kurds opened the gates.

“Of course, this will help in stabilizing the situation. The enlargement of the zone under the control of government forces... is without doubt a positive trend,” he said.

Kurdish forces who were left exposed by Trump's pledge to withdraw US troops have asked the Syrian regime for help to face a threatened Turkish offensive.

Ankara is opposed to Kurdish control of Syrian territory close to its border, saying it helps Kurdish separatists inside Turkey.

Peskov said the Turkish ministers' visit to Moscow would serve to “clarify” the situation and “synchronize actions” between the two countries.

A three-way summit in January would be the latest step in the Astana peace process -- set up in early 2017 by Russia and Iran, who support President Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, and opposition backer Turkey.
The Astana process was launched after Russia's military intervention in Syria tipped the balance in the Damascus regime's favor.

Lavrov said the “ultimate goal” of the Astana process is to “restore peace in Syria, with all ethnic and religious groups at ease and at peace, including the Kurds of course.”

The first group of American military servicemen has left Syria in the aftermath of US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from that country, Anadolu Agency reported on Saturday.

According to the news agency, on December 28, at least 50 troops left a warehouse with weapons and ammunition in Syria’s Al-Hasakah Governorate, heading towards Iraq in armored cars.

The Syrian army hoisted the country's national flag over Manbij after it entered the key northern city for the first time in six years.

The Syrian military announced Friday that it have raised the national flag of Syria in Manbij right after Kurdish militia decided to leave the area.

Earlier today, the Syrian Kurdish YPG troops called on the government of President Bashar al-Assad to take control of Manbij to protect the town from the threat of Turkish attacks.

Damascus responded with a statement, which said government forces were already entering the city.

“Considering the Arab Army’s duty and in a response to a call by the people of Manbij, the Syrian general staff announces that the Army has entered Manbij and raised the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic there,” the statement cited by Syrian media said.

The statement added that the army is determined to “crush terrorism and defeat all invaders and occupiers” and to provide security for all Syrian citizens.

The development comes after the US, an ally of the Kurds for the past several years, decided to withdraw its troops from Kurd-controlled areas in Syria. The withdrawal came after Ankara complained about the presence of the YPG fighters near its border.

In Hassaka, northeastern Syria, the council of the dignitaries of the Syrian tribes and clans affirmed that the entry of the Syrian Arab Army to Manbej is a strong message to all those who dream of dividing Syria.

In a statement on Friday, the council said "today is a glorified day as the Syrian Arab army's units have entered the city of Manbej and trampled on the dreams of Turkey's Erdogan and his terrorist agents who are also the agents and tools of America and the West".

The council, which greeted the army's strategic military achievement, called on the political and military leaders of the so-called "Democratic Syria Forces" (DSF) to speed up handing over the remaining parts of the lands under their control to the Syrian army.It also urged the DSF to hand over all the state institutions, which they had controlled, to the Syrian state in order to build confidence, to deal a heavy blow to Erdogan's geographical and political aspirations in Syria and to foil the American-Turkish scheme which aimed at giving Syria's northern and northeastern areas to the Wahhabis, the agents of Erdogan, America and the Zionist entity.

The council reiterated that "the Syrians are all united in support for one army, which the Syian Arab army, and one great leader, who is President Bashar Al-Assad".
