Trump's announcement in Syria could ease tensions between the US and Turkey and facilitate dialogue between the two long-standing NATO allies.
In a dramatic turn of events, the White House has announced that US forces in Syria will withdraw in expectation of a Turkish military operation into the region, opening the way for Turkey to go after the YPG - the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist organisation.

Crucially, the US has also potentially facilitated the end of a years-long ongoing dispute that has weakened the relationship of two crucial NATO members and the broader alliance.

The withdrawal decision comes after a phone call between the American president Donald Trump and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who declared an imminent military operation in Syria.

Hours after the announcement, ground sources and the YPG-dominated SDF confirmed the start of the withdrawal by US personnel from at least two posts at the Turkish-Syrian border. Despite the announcement, Turkey needs to work fast to prevent a repeat of Trump’s 'withdrawal' from Syria in December last year.

The announcement by the White House is crucial for the future of Syria, Turkey and the NATO alliance.

Previously, the Obama administration aligned with the Syrian branch of the PKK and sowed the seeds of a Turkish-PKK war.
This policy showed its catastrophic outcome for Turkey during the urban warfare campaign of the PKK in southeastern Turkey and the countless terrorist attacks against civilians in urban areas and mainly Kurdish populated cities and villages.

The policy to partner with the YPG was labelled as transitional and tactical, and US officials including James Jeffrey repeatedly underlined that the US made no promises to the YPG-dominated SDF for a political settlement or unending protection.

The decision by Trump is nothing more than a return to normalcy. The absurdity of the US aligning with a neo-Marxist group designated as a terrorist organisation by the US government might end with this critical decision of the Trump administration. Many analysts in Washington who lived in the fairy tales of the alleged ‘Rojava Revolution’ may criticise Trump, but in reality, the US president only follows realpolitik.

The current withdrawal announcement seems way more serious than the previous one as immediately after, US soldiers reportedly began the withdrawal process. However, this doesn’t mean that the withdrawal is definite, and the security establishment will not persuade Trump to back out his decision again.

The announcement by the White House and Trump's tweets indicate a seriousness in the decision, but so did the last ones. The establishment in Washington will pressure Trump, and it is only Turkey’s resolve that enables Trump to make this decision.

As Turkey is helping Trump to accomplish his election promise, Turkey should not lose this momentum and act fast. Any delay in launching the operation may result in nothing happening.

In this regard, Turkey has already prepared for the operation and located critical military personnel and equipment to the border region.
Additionally, Turkey’s Syrian partners are ready for the joint Turkish-Syrian operation against the YPG in northeast Syria. On October 4, the Interim Syrian Government announced that all armed groups of the Syrian opposition merged under the command of the Syrian Interim Government Defence Ministry and joined forces within the Syrian National Army.

With this announcement, not only did the Syrian political opposition gain control over the armed groups in Syria but also the armed opposition managed to come together after eight years of war.

The formerly US-backed Free Syrian Army factions fought together with the Turkish Armed Forces against the YPG in Syria. In this regard, it is essential to note that Hasan Hamada, the Deputy Defence Minister of the Syrian Interim Government, called upon the SDF fighters to defect to the Syrian National Army.

The only obstacle in front of a joint Turkish-Syrian military operation against the YPG was US soldiers on the ground. With their withdrawal, that obstacle will vanish, but this development will also open the gates to the reality of the SDF.
The Trump administration has killed two birds with one stone.

His decision has not only opened the way to normalisation in northeast Syria where the control of the YPG was unnatural. It has also enabled the US a way out of Syria, and most notably his decision may mark the end of the friction within the NATO alliance.
From a broader perspective, the decision by Trump ends the primary source of dispute with NATO’s second-biggest army and enables a more constructive partnership based on trust between the two states.

His move might improve not only the US stance vis-a-vis Iran but also encourage the strength of the southern flank of the alliance. By minimising US presence in Syria, Trump reduces the vulnerability of US soldiers and creates more space for great power politics, in contrast to the irrational policies of CENTCOM to become facilitators of non-state armed groups by alienating allies.

In the Syrian context, Trump’s rationale was best put into words by himself: “It is time for us to get out of these ridiculous Endless Wars […] Turkey, Europe, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the Kurds will now have to figure the situation out.”

US Senator Graham, Turkey in case of operation in Syria: "If Turkey takes a step to the Turkish military and economic sanctions on Syria, I will do my best to enforce."

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham says decision would allow Iran to get a greater foothold in region and become ‘a nightmare’ for the Jewish state
WASHINGTON — Top allies of Donald Trump castigated the US president Monday, after his surprise announcement that US forces would withdraw from Syria and allow a Turkish offensive against US-allied Kurds in the country, saying the move would enable Iran to gain a greater foothold in Syria and render Israel militarily vulnerable.

“The most probable outcome of this impulsive decision is to ensure Iran’s domination of Syria,” tweeted South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican. “The U.S. now has no leverage and Syria will eventually become a nightmare for Israel.”

Former US envoy to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Trump, her old boss, was abandoning a vital American ally.

“We must always have the backs of our allies, if we expect them to have our back,” she tweeted. “The Kurds were instrumental in our successful fight against ISIS in Syria. Leaving them to die is a big mistake.”

On Sunday night, the White House said US forces in northeastern Syria will step aside and clear the way for an expected Turkish assault — essentially abandoning Kurdish fighters who fought alongside American forces in the years-long battle to defeat the Islamic State group.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened for months to launch a military operation across the border. He views the Syria Kurdish forces as a threat to his country as Ankara has struggled with a Kurdish insurgency within Turkey.

Republicans and Democrats have long warned that allowing a Turkish attack could lead to a massacre of the Kurds and send a troubling message to American allies across the globe.
Several of Trump’s closest allies on Capitol Hill voiced similar concerns Monday.

“If reports about US retreat in #Syria are accurate, the Trump administration has made a grave mistake that will have implications far beyond Syria,” tweeted Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican. “It would confirm #Iran’s view of this administration & embolden then to escalate hostile attacks which in turn could trigger much broader & more dangerous regional war.”

Graham said that he consulted with Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, and would introduce bipartisan legislation to sanction Turkey if it attacks Syria — and call for Ankara’s suspension from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

“We will introduce bipartisan sanctions against Turkey if they invade Syria and will call for their suspension from NATO if they attack Kurdish forces who assisted the U.S. in the destruction of the ISIS Caliphate,” Graham tweeted.

Trump defended his decision, saying that he “was elected on getting out of these ridiculous endless wars.” If Turkey were to do anything “off limits,” he said, he would consequence the country harshly.

“As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!),” he tweeted. “They must, with Europe and others, watch over the captured ISIS fighters and families.”

“It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory,” he added. “THE USA IS GREAT!”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Trump never really liked the US involvement in Syria - and rightly so - but in spite of his attempts to withdraw, he was pressured or maneuvered into staying longer, even into attacking the government forces a couple of times.

Iran’s Zarif Urges Turkey to Respect Syria’s Territorial Integrity
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned Turkey against any military move in Syria and said regional nations’ security can be preserved only through respecting other countries’ territorial integrity.

Addressing an open session of the parliament in Tehran on Sunday, Zarif pointed to the recent tensions between Syrian Kurds and the Turkish government and said, “Regarding the Syrian Kurds, the position of the Islamic Republic is completely clear.”

“We have stated that the only way to maintain security in Turkey is to establish the (Syrian) central government’s military presence in the border areas, and under the Adana Agreement this can be done,” he said.

“Security (in Turkey) cannot be created through (military) action against Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” the Iranian top diplomat went on to say.

“The Islamic Republic certainly believes that regional security is possible through observing two principles: first, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity and security of all regional countries, and second, respect for the rights of all its inhabitants, including our Kurdish brothers and sisters…,” Zarif stated.

The operation to create the so-called “security zone” in northern Syria may begin in the near future and will be called the “Source of Peace”). This was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Recall that Erdogan announced that Turkish patience is over and all preparations for the military operation have already been made: Turkey is ready to sweep away the pro-American Kurdish “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF), which, and not without reason, Ankara considers directly related with terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers Party.

The air force of the Libyan National Army, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, launched airstrikes on ammunition depots in the city of Sirte, which is controlled by the forces of the Government of National Accord, a statement was made by the official representative of the Libyan National Army Ahmad al-Mismari, RIA Novosti writes. Recall that on April 4, Khalifa Haftar ordered his forces to launch an offensive on Tripoli to "liberate themselves from terrorists." In response, in Tripoli, armed groups loyal to the government announced the start of the response operation “Volcano of Wrath”. As a result of the fighting in Tripoli, according to the WHO, more than 1 thousand people died, more than 5.5 thousand were injured.

The Arabic-language publication Rai Al Youm, published a devastating article on the actions of the Suadites in Yemen. The reason for publication was the recent defeat of the Saudi military in the Najran district. The author writes that this defeat reminded him of the 1967 war (meaning the conflict between Israel and the coalition of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Algeria). Then the Arab troops surrendered almost without a fight. During the battle, the coalition army led by Saudi Arabia showed complete failure. Armored vehicles left the war zone, were besieged by the Yemenis, soldiers could not find shelter. Concerning the Hussite war trophies, the expert is ironic that America is thus “exporting” its weapons to Yemen and Iran via Saudi Arabia.

US analytical center - RAND Corporation published a report in which it presented a strategy to contain Russia in the Black Sea. The authors are concerned that the Russian army has modernized the Black Sea Fleet and increased its strength in the Southern Military District. In the course of research, they came to the conclusion that in order to counteract Russia in the region, air defense systems and coastal missile systems should be deployed on the territory of Romania and Bulgaria. In addition, according to experts, it is necessary to expand NATO exercises and also help Ukraine and Georgia more the development of defense technology. As a matter of fact, the researchers propose to legitimize everything that is forbidden to be done according to agreements between Russia, the USA and NATO.

The Georgian side advocates the resumption of air links with Russia. This was stated by Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani. According to him, the development of tourism can contribute to de-escalation in relations between the two countries. Moscow stated that in order to restore constructive relations with Russia, the Georgian authorities need to change rhetoric and guarantee the safety of Russian tourists. David Zalkaliani, said that the development of tourism is one of the areas that promote mutual understanding between the parties, he spoke about this at a meeting with his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of a session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

NSC Official: US Sees Kurdish Nation Another Israel in Region

The US should never stop support for Kurdish militias in the Middle East as a Kurdish nation across Syria, Iraq and Turkey would be "another Israel in the region", a National Security Council official stated after President Donald Trump gave a green light to Ankara to launch a military operation against Washington's long-time Kurdish allies in Northern Syria

"To be honest with you, it would be better for the United States to support a Kurdish nation across Turkey, Syria and Iraq," the unnamed National Security Council official told Newsweek, adding, "It would be another Israel in the region."

In a scheduled phone call on Sunday afternoon between Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the US leader claimed that he would withdraw American forces from Northern Syria.

Commenting on his decision to pull American troops deployed in Northeastern Syria back from an imminent anti-Kurdish incursion of the Turkish military, Trump noted on Monday, "It’s time for the US to “get out of ridiculous endless wars”.

“The Kurds fought with us, but were paid massive amounts of money and equipment to do so. They have been fighting Turkey for decades. I held off this fight for almost 3 years, but it is time for us to get out of these ridiculous Endless Wars, many of them tribal, and bring our soldiers home,” he stressed.

The announcement triggered howls of fury from hawks in Congress and the media, as well as experts in Middle Eastern politic.

The official also denounced the move as stabbing Kurds in the back, saying, "We are telling the world, we will use you and then throw you away. It's not like they don't have a television in Asia, in Africa, and South America."

According to the NSC official, who had first-hand knowledge of the phone call, Trump did not endorse any Turkish military operation against Kurdish Forces, but also did not threaten economic sanctions during the phone call if Turkey decided to undertake offensive operations.

Syrian Kurds Astonished to See Hassan Nasrallah's Prediction Come True
Syrian Kurds Astonished to See Hassan Nasrallah's Prediction Come True

The Kurdish forces were surprised after the US turned its back to them and declared decision to withdraw military men from Syria as foreseen by Lebanese Hezbollah resistance group Leader Seyed Hassan Nasrallah.

In a growing number of posts that imply the Kurdish militants' deep regret over their dependence on the US military support against a Turkish incursion, several social media accounts of the Kurdish rebels noted the US retreat from Northern and Northeastern Syria and acknowledged their fatal miscalculation to fully trust and gamble their fate on the US military backup.

In a speech on August 26, 2018, the Hezbollah leader had praised the Syrian Kurds for their vigilance and starting negotiations with the Syrian government, saying that the Kurds entered the talks after they were skeptical about United States’ loyalty and they were not sure when the US government would leave them.

“We know that Pentagon has set aside $500mn-$750mn under the name of protecting Kurds, the Kurdish People Protection Units (YPG). What is this share of the budget for? Is it for establishing democracy in Syria or it is for supporting the Kurds who must know from experience that the United States uses you as an instrument along with its own plans, attacks or in its war in Syria, be it against the Islamic Republic (of Iran), or against Russia, or against the Axis of Resistance,” Nasrallah said at the time.

He warned the Kurds that “they (the Americans) eventually will only think of their own interests and will leave you alone, and will sell you like slaves in the market”.

"This is the Hezbollah leader's correct assessment and predictions that come true," the social media accounts of the Kurdish fighters affiliated to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) admitted after the US decision to withdraw forces from Syria.

The unexpected announcement by President Trump that he would draw down the US military presence in Syria to make way for Turkish troops was greeted by the Kurds as a betrayal of the trust established during the fight, which has cost the lives of more than 12,000 members of the SDF.

For the Kurds, the decision to permit Turkey to invade marked the latest in a long history of betrayals of Kurdish aspirations by the US.

Turkish Army Kicks Off Attacks on Kurdish Militias’ Position in Northeastern Syria
Turkish Army Kicks Off Attacks on Kurdish Militias’ Position in Northeastern Syria

The Turkish Army has started its attacks from air and ground on the military positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Northeastern Hasaka near the borders with Turkey, media reports said.

The Arabic-language website of the Russian Sputnik news agency reported that the Turkish fighter jets pounded a center of the Kurdish militias in Tal Tavil in the surrounding areas of the city of al-Malekieh in Northeastern Hasaka.

It noted that Turkish Army’s military attacks inflicted heavy losses on the Kurdish militias, and said that during an attack on the village of Khanikeh adjacent to the illegal passage of Kurdish forces known as Simalka which linked Syria’s Hasaka to Iraqi Kurdistan region, 80 percent of the passage’s two bridges were destroyed.

Meantime, it was reported that a military convoy carrying weapons and heavy military equipment from Iraq to the areas under the SDF’s control was destroyed.

The SDF has illegally and with the US help opened Simalka border crossing to construct a supply route from Iraqi Kurdistan’s region to Hasaka province in line with separating the Northeastern Syria from the rest of the country.

The Turkish airstrikes aimed at cutting this supply route is while the US has sent over 6,000 trucks packed with weapons and military equipment from this illegal border crossing for Kurdish militias.

Meantime, the Turkish Army’s artillery units pounded the town of al-Khademeh to East of al-Malekieh in Hasaka province and in Syria-Iraq-Turkey border triangle.

The local sources also reported that a military convoy comprising military and armored vehicles of the Turkish Army started moving towards Manbij in Northeastern Aleppo via Jarablus crossing as the Ankara-backed National Army terrorist group has declared a state of alert.

The Turkish Defense Ministry in a statement said that the Turkish Army is fully prepared for conducting military operations against the Kurdish militias.

Meantime, the Anadolu news agency reported that the US Department of Defense also said that Turkey has been expelled from the Joint Aerial Operations Center in Syria and the intel on the monitoring and reconnaissance will no longer be shared with Ankara. Pentagon also in a statement announced that it will not support Turkey’s military operations in Northeastern Syria.

The US troops’ retreat from the Turkish borders is after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a statement announced that Turkish Army will soon start its military operations in Northern Syria as it has planned for it a long time ago.

Locals in Idleb increasingly insist to exit towards safe areas…Al-Nusra terrorists prevent them from leaving
By Shaza - 8 October, 2019
Idleb, SANA- Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization and the affiliated groups in Idleb continue to take civilians as human shields and prevent them from leaving towards the safe areas via Abu al-Dohour corridor for the 26th day in a row.

Flashback:
September 21, 2019
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pitched his tent at New York’s glitzy Peninsula Hotel this week, where he will be dining (but not wining) American Muslim leaders on the sidelines of UN meetings.

During his 2017 New York visit, Erdogan met with then-freshman U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). This past July, state-run media chiefs called on Turks around the world to donate to her re-election campaign, which is illegal if they are not U.S. citizens or green-card holders.

But what should disturb Americans most about Erdogan is not his efforts to influence Congress, his abysmal record as a jailer of journalists, his genocidal war against the Kurds, or even the $100 million mosque he has constructed in Lanham, Maryland.

It’s Erdogan’s commitment to global jihad, and specifically, to ISIS terrorists. Since 2012, the Turkish intelligence service, MIT, under Erdogan’s direction, has been providing resources and material assistance to ISIS, while Turkish Customs officials turned a blind eye to ISIS recruits flowing across Turkey’s borders into Syria and Iraq.

Scores of ISIS fighters captured by pro-U.S. Kurdish forces in northern Syria showed Turkish exit stamps on their passports, and otherwise boasted of the direct assistance they had received from Turkish authorities.

“Turkish intelligence knows everything,” one captured ISIS fighter told his Kurdish captors recently.

Many former ISIS fighters have now joined the Turkish-backed forces that have occupied the Syrian Kurdish city of Afrin, where they have engaged in ethnic cleansing.

Two Turkish intelligence officers, captured by Kurdish guerilla fighters in northern Iraq in 2017, provided insider accounts of Turkish government assistance to ISIS and other jihadi groups operating in Syria and Iraq.

Turkey’s assistance to ISIS starts right at the top. In 2016, Wikileaks published an archive of 58,000 emails documenting the involvement of Erdogan’s son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, in helping ISIS market oil stolen from Syria and Iraq.

Until the publication of the emails, Albayrak had denied any involvement in the illicit oil trade.

Sümeyye Erdogan, daughter of the Turkish president, reportedly set up an entire medical corps, including a hospital to treat wounded ISIS fighters in Sanlurfa, a city in Southeastern Turkey close to the Syrian border.

ISIS evacuated severely wounded fighters across the border into Sanliurfa in Turkish army trucks without undergoing Customs inspection.

The evidence of Erdogan’s direct, personal and institutional support for ISIS and related jihadi groups is so extensive, the wonder is why the American media is not paying more attention to it.
