A tourist group of 49 people, consisting mostly of children, has been caught in a strong lake storm in Karelia, northwest Russia, according to the authorities. Preliminary reports state that the group consisted mostly of 12 and 15-year-old teenagers.

"We have found eleven bodies, rescuing operation is underway for at least four more," Fedor Polshin, head of EMERCOM's North-Western Region press-service, told RIA Novosti.

The incident took place at the Lake Syamozero, a large freshwater lake in the Republic of Karelia.

At least 10 children have died after three tourist vessels were caught in a lake storm in Karelia, northwest Russia, police told TASS. All the children were from Moscow, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, citing preliminary data.


“There has been a great tragedy in Karelia,” Sobyanin said. “According to the preliminary data, 10 children from Moscow have died on Lake Syamozero. Condolences to the families and friends [of the victims],” the mayor wrote on Twitter.

The incident took place on Lake Syamozero, a large freshwater lake in the Republic of Karelia, according to an official from Karelia’s Culture Ministry, Ekaterina Biktimirova.

“The group of 49 people started its voyage on Saturday… There were children between 12 and 15 years old with a guardian. They were caught by a storm overnight. There are casualties,” she told TASS.

Sources told Interfax that the bodies of at least six victims were recovered from the bottom of the lake.

The tourist group consisted of two boats and one raft, according to information from the Emergencies Ministry. Rescuers have managed to save 11 people so far, the ministry said in a statement.

One girl reportedly managed to reach the shore of the local resort by herself.

Oh no! I am so sorry to read this. This is really sad news, for the all families and for the surviving children. Were they aware that bad weather was on the way, I wonder? Or was it a freak storm out of nowhere. One would think that if they knew bad weather was forecast, they would have rescheduled the excursion.

Makes no sense for any boat captain to venture possible rough seas. He would have had some weather Intel or a government app to plan and plot his decision.

Unless it was a sudden weather anomaly.

A tourist group, consisting mostly of children, has been caught in a strong lake storm in Karelia, northwest Russia, according to the authorities.

Preliminary reports state that the group consisted mostly of 12 to 15-year-olds, all of them from Moscow, according to the Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

Reportedly there were two boats and one raft, and according to preliminary reports both boats capsized during the storm.

Thirty six people have been rescued so far, according to EMERCOM. The fate of four tourists is still unknown.

At least eleven children drowned when a tourist group they were a part of was caught in a strong lake storm in Karelia, northwest Russia.

According to RIA Novosti, Russian Children's Ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said that their deaths were likely the result of a lack of life jackets.

"It appears that the children who drowned didn't have life jackets. Those who had life jackets managed to survive," Astakhov said.

"We're now trying to find out who gave approval for the children to take part in this trip, and if all of those taking part in it were equipped with life jackets," he said.

He also added that his representative has already arrived at the scene of the tragedy, and that the authorities are already trying to determine who exactly planned this tourist trip and whether they took the necessary safety precautions.

"We're conducting an independent investigation parallel to that run by the authorities, in order to find out who approved the group's route, why the children didn't receive proper safety instructions and why no necessary training was performed," Astakhov said.

According to Astakhov, a criminal case regarding this tragedy has been launched and the Investigative Committee is already handling the matter.

The news website Respublika quoted Natalya Stolyarova, who runs a dog breeding kennel, as saying that a boat trip tragedy which claimed the lives of 11 children, occurred at about 16:30 on Friday, when one of the boats capsized at the Lake Syamozero.

According to her, 11 children who were in the boat finally managed to get out of the water on their own.

Shortly after, "they spent the night on the island and the peninsula of the lake in groups of three or four people."

Stolyarova said that they were discovered by one of her employees in the early hours of Saturday.

"The children were close to freezing, and the employee was lucky to wake them up, she said.

Right now, the survivors are reportedly in a satisfactory condition, with the two of them being given urgent medical assistance. All the children are still in Kudam, from where they are due to be taken by medics.

A 12-year-old girl raised the alarm about the tragic boat disaster which killed at least 15 children in Karelia, northwest Russia, when they were caught in a strong storm at Syamozero lake, LifeNews reported on Sunday.

Yulia K. and her brother were in the tourist group from Moscow which set sail on the lake before the storm hit on Saturday. She was separated from him and thrown onto the lake's shore, where she lay unconscious until the next morning.

When she woke up, Yulia K. walked up the shore towards the village of Kudama. On the way to get help, she came across another young boy who had been badly injured in the disaster.

She remembered his location and continued to Kudama, where she found a local resident who called the emergency services. It appears that they had not been informed about the incident by the trip's organizers.

"First we thought that she just got lost. But when she told us what happened, we called rescue services and police at once," LifeNews reported Kudama resident Aleksandr said.

"She was just walking along the shore. She knocked at three houses but no one was in, and then she got to us."

According to information from the Emergencies Ministry, 47 children aged between 12 and 15 years old, accompanied by four adult instructors, were on the three boats that capsized.

At least five children have been hospitalized with hypothermia, and 25 children have been sent to Karelia's capital city of Petrozavodsk. The Russian General Prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation.

On Saturday, several boats carrying a 51-member group from Karelia's Park-Hotel Syamozero summer camp, consisting of children and their adult coaches, capsized on Lake Syamozero during a storm. According to the latest information, 13 children died and one remains missing. A criminal case was opened on Sunday, with at least five arrests made.

"Additional inspections of summer camps are planned in the Republic of Crimea," the government's press service said in a statement.

The heads of Crimean supervised program for children are also recommended to organize regular patrols on the territories, according to the statement.
