BAGHDAD, Dec 29, 2006 (AFP) - An Iraqi judge who has been asked to witness the execution of Saddam Hussein told reporters Friday that he had been put on standby for a hanging that could take place "tonight or tomorrow".
Asked when Iraq's ousted dictator might be hanged, Judge Moneer Haddad, a member of the appeals court who confirmed Saddam's execution order, said: "Maybe tonight, or tomorrow."
"I am the appeal court judge who will be there. Prosecutor Munqith al-Faroon will also be there," he said, explaining that he had been asked to witness the hanging by Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki's office.
"They told me you must be ready before one hour," he said.
Earlier a lawmaker who is close to Maliki had told AFP that all the paperwork was ready for Saddam's execution, which might take place before dawn on Saturday, or on Thursday after the Eid al-Adha holiday.
