Sadie girl

My mother just called me and told me that my dog, Sadie, has lymphatic cancer. The tumors are big and she went from being a happy go lucky dog to barely being able to move in the past couple of days. She's going to put her down tomorrow. My mom has been taking care of Sadie for the past year, when I moved and wasn't able to bring here with me. It was a hard decision, but it was the right one for both of us. At my mom's she had a humongous yard, deer to stare at out from the window, and lots of dogs to bark at as my mom also has her dog grooming shop at home. My Mom has taken wonderful care of her - I couldn't have asked for a better place for her to be.

Sadie and I first met about 8 years ago when my mom had come to visit me. We went out to eat at a restaurant and when we came out this little black dog came wondering over to us in the parking lot. She said hi and then went over to the dumpster looking for food. I think it was sometime in January or February because I remember it being quite cold. She came back to us when called and since it was freezing out, I brought her home. She slept next to me that night and even woke me up in the middle of the night because she had diarrhea, but wouldn't go in the house.

She didn't bark the first couple of months she lived with me. I suspect she was abused and abandoned by her prior owners because she would put her ears down when anyone would go to pet her. Plus it didn't make sense that she would never bark. She would start barking soon though, as she loved doing her job. :) Sadie is a small black Border Collie. She really has the border collie 'staring' trait and would spend hours just staring out on the horizon looking for wolves (or squirrels or other dogs) as her ancestors were trained to do, and she always loves to play. She is one of the most affectionate dogs I've had the pleasure to know. She is my good and dear friend. I'll really miss her. I can't blame her for going at this time.

I'm going home to my Mom's house tonight to be with her when she is put down.

Aw what a sweetheart she is! Those pictures are lovely. So very sorry to hear of her cancer. Peace to you.

My condolences Shane.

My family also had to have our Shepherd mix to sleep on Friday. She had been going downhill for months now and her back legs had become pretty much useless. We bought a harness to assist her in walking which worked well for a while, but for the last few months had to also get a special harness (called "bottoms up") because her rear legs just would not support her any more and this harness used in conjunction with the body harness was necessary to help her get around and we even held her up with it to eat her meals and drink out of her water bowl.

We wanted to keep her with us as long as possible even if she was unable to do very much as long as she was still aware and alert and not in any obvious pain. Thursday night it was apparent that she was not able to stand the pain she was having any longer and our family decided we would have to help her on her way. She went peacefully and I'm sure she knew we all loved her very much and always did the best we could to care for her and give her the best home and family possible.

We still miss her though, along with our other Shepherd Shayna who died last year.

What wonderful friends our dogs are huh?
