Session 20 August 2001

Is PM-9 going to hist us on May 10, 2003? (A) Maybe. A: Very possible. Q: Is that our “Kaboom, splat?” A: Maybe. Q: If it hits in the Pacific, Rainier will be a caldera, tsunamis would roll into Puget Sound, and goodbye to Hawaii! A: Yes. Q: (A) If it will hit, we will have nuclear radiation. A: Yes. Q: (T) Before, they gave probabilities, like 1 in how many. (L) What is the probability? A: High.

______________

This asteroid didn't hit... But it will have another close pass in 2038, within 18,421,807 km of Earth.

It's full name is 68372 (2001 PM9).

It's classified as a Near Earth Asteroid (NEA) and a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA).

If it hits, the consequence would be far from being that of the dinosaurs extinction.
But still serious. Very serious. There would be the release of dust in the sky, that could remain there for years blocking the sun and, thus, agriculture collapse, and possibly billions of deaths.
Sure, but they're so many of them out there. Another fun fact is that they can also hit in clusters. It seems to be part of a repeating cycle.
