Shooter targets Republican congressmen at Alexandria baseball practice

Whenever these 'crazed' attacks happen anymore, one can't help but wonder if there is more than meets the eye; an interesting observation from Joseph Farrell (start at 11:18):

Other comments around the web have noted how Scalise's condition went critical after his first operation - at the same hospital where Seth Rich went from stable to deceased. Another thought was that the person who was on third base and closest to the shooter by all rights should have been a certain fatality, yet Scalise was the one most severely wounded.

You just never know anymore as to which events are real and which are orchestrated by whatever means necessary.

The hospital where Rep. Steve Scalise is recovering after being shot during practice for a congressional baseball game says the congressman remains in critical condition and will require several more operations.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is also providing a more detailed description of Scalise's wounds. The hospital says he was shot in the left hip, after which "the bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding."

A day of scheduled training Wednesday turned into a “real-world security incident” that was eventually determined to be “a false alarm” at Travis Air Force Base.

After a lockdown that lasted more than one hour at the base, rumors of a hostage situation or an active shooter were determined to be false.

Staff Sgt. Charles Rivezzo with the 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs, confirmed there was “no shooter identified.”

He explained that during the simulated “security incident” on base Security Forces personnel received reports of shots fired and they responded accordingly. Part of that response includes putting the base on lockdown.

Earlier this week, Travis Air Force Base sent information in an email to The Reporter notifying the public of the scheduled training for Wednesday and today.

“These exercises mean everyone on base is on heightened awareness,” said Col. John Klein, 60th AMW commander. “Though it was a false alarm, our first responders reacted appropriately. We take every security incident, very seriously. I am confident in our ability to respond to any emergency situation.”

During a simulated security incident people on base and the surrounding communities hear an increase in voice notifications and alarms.

Additionally, there are increased gate entry times during periods throughout the day.

Also, all base exercise notifications heard over the installation’s Giant Voice system are prefaced with an “Exercise Exercise Exercise” reminder.

Sirens and alarms heard from the base are used to simulate a realistic environment in which base personnel can properly train and respond in the event of a real-world incident.

The connection to human trafficking is pretty interesting, folks are already postulating that he was shot because of his work on a human trafficking bill:

I'm also seeing a lot of smearing of this guy, some folks claiming he spoke to a white supremacist group, and other folks debunking that claim:

_http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/brad-wilmouth/2017/06/15/cnns-kaye-repeats-debunked-claim-scalise-spoke-david-duke-group

Kaye began the report by recalling that the Republican congressman has a well known love of baseball, and then moved to recounting his history in Congress. The CNN correspondent soon got to the claims about him speaking to white supremacists as she continued: "In 2014, after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his primary, Scalise jumped into the race. But during that campaign, questions were raised about a speech he gave to a group led by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke back in 2002."

She then added: "Scalise told reporters, 'I detest any kind of hate group. For anyone to suggest that I was involved with a group like that is insulting and ludicrous.'"

Not mentioned was that back in 2015 it was already reported that the man who invited Scalise to speak in 2002 disputed the account that the congressman spoke to Duke's group. The man who booked hotel space for the group's convention, Kenny Knight, has claimed the event Scalise spoke to was a separate event for his local community group which he held in the same hotel as Duke's group to take advantage of the available space. Additionally, a flyer for the convention shows no sign that Scalise was one of the scheduled speakers.

Curiouser and curiouser.

The Washington hospital where House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is recuperating from a gunshot wound says he has been readmitted to the intensive care unit.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center says the Louisiana congressman is back in intensive care because of new concerns for infection. Scalise was in serious condition Wednesday night.

Scalise and four other people were injured last month when a gunman opened fire on a Republican baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman.

The congressman was struck in the hip and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs. He has undergone several surgeries and had been upgraded to fair condition.

The shooting in the Virginia suburb that critically wounded Scalise and injured several others has forced members of Congress to examine their security arrangements to determine if they are sufficient.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has said she favors more money for the U.S. Capitol Police force, which is seeking an 8 percent increase to nearly $427 million for next year. Pelosi, a California Democrat, said more money would help the agency enhance its presence when members of Congress, staff and others congregate away from the Capitol.

“It’s security for other people who are there, too,” she said at one point. “If somebody is coming after a member of Congress, you don’t want to be anywhere nearby.”

Members of the U.S. Capitol Police engaged in a shootout with the assailant during the Alexandria incident, and lawmakers said their presence probably prevented many deaths. Two police officers were injured; the shooter, James Hodgkinson, later died.

The Capitol Police were at the ballfield in Virginia because Scalise is the majority whip and a member of the leadership. Other members of Congress are not afforded the same security as congressional leaders.

“It seems self-evident that when the teams are practicing, there should be security there,” Pelosi said.

Even before the shooting, Speaker Paul Ryan and Pelosi had begun talking about changes that could improve members’ safety, said Ryan’s spokeswoman, AshLee Strong.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4690144/Steve-Scalise-released-Intensive-Care-Unit.html

The Louisiana congressman and third-ranking House Republican has been hospitalized since June 14, when he and four others were injured in a shooting while at baseball practice.

However, while Scalise is no longer in intensive care, he remains in serious condition , an official said on condition of anonymity.

Scalise, 51, was shot when gunman James Hodgkinson, 66, of Illinois, opened fire on a group of GOP lawmakers and their associates in Alexandria, Virginia.

The congressman was struck in the hip, and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs.

US Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman.

Scalise had been improving in recent weeks following surgeries, and the hospital had even downgraded his condition to 'serious' from 'fair.'

But on June 5 it was announced that he had developed a serious infection and that he would have to be readmitted to the ICU.

A lobbyist for Tyson Foods, Matt Mika, a Capitol Hill staffer, Zack Barth, and two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, were also wounded in the shooting. All four are expected to make full recoveries.

Lawmakers who witnessed the shooting said there was several minutes during which Scalise lay bleeding but was unable to get medical attention because of the active shooter situation.

He indicated he was able to get control of the external wound, but wasn't aware of whether there were internal injuries or internal blood loss.

Representative Mo Brooks described working with Wenstrup to use a belt to make a tourniquet to staunch wounds.

Scalise, who was shot in the hip, was rushed to hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding.

A doctor at the time said that there were 'hundreds' of bullet fragments left in his body after the shooting.

Hodgkinson had opened fire from behind the third base dugout while the players were on the field.

Senator Rand Paul, who was at the scene but was not injured, described it as a 'killing field', while Michigan Representative Mike Bishop said the men were 'sitting ducks' for the gunman and his M4 rifle.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday that the six-term Louisiana Republican was released from the hospital on Tuesday and is beginning "intensive inpatient rehabilitation." It did not identify the rehabilitation facility.

"Congressman Steve Scalise has made excellent progress in his recovery from a life-threatening gunshot wound six weeks ago," the hospital said.

Scalise was in good spirits and looking forward to returning to work once he completes his rehabilitation, according to the hospital. On Monday, Scalise phoned in to the weekly GOP whips meeting, thanking everyone for their hard work and expressing appreciation for U.S. Capitol Police.

Scalise and four other people were injured June 14 when a gunman opened fire on a Republican baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman. The rifle-wielding attacker had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

The 51-year-old congressman was struck in the hip and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs. He has had several surgeries,

Scalise's trauma surgeon, Dr. Jack Sava, told reporters last month that Scalise had arrived at the hospital in shock, with intense internal bleeding and "an imminent risk of death."

'I'm back' - politician returns to work in Washington after being shot and left at death's door in June
http://www.thejournal.ie/steve-scalise-congress-3621355-Sep2017/
Steve Scalise made his way into congress on crutches for the first time in three months and hailed his survival as a ‘miracle’.

REPUBLICAN US LAWMAKER Steve Scalise has made a spirited return to Congress for the first time since being gravely wounded in a mass shooting at a June baseball practice.

A beaming Scalise drew loud cheers
, fist bumps, and multiple prolonged standing ovations from colleagues when he walked using crutches onto the floor of the House of Representatives and addressed the chamber, three-and-a-half months after he nearly died in an attack that shocked the nation.

“You have no idea how great this feels to be back at work in the people’s House,”
Scalise told the packed chamber in an emotional speech announcing his return to work.

I’m definitely a living example that miracles really do happen.

To mark his return, Scalise sent a tweet of himself and his wife looking out over Washington from Capitol Hill. It read simply: “I’m back.”

The 51-year-old lawmaker from the southern state of Louisiana
faced what doctors described as an “imminent risk of death” when he was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound on 14 June.

He was shot in the left hip with a high-velocity rifle wielded by a gunman who stormed a congressional charity baseball game practice.

Scalise underwent several surgeries and months of rehabilitation. More physical therapy lies ahead in order to
“relearn how to walk again”,
he said.

A lobbyist, a congressional aide and a US Capitol Police officer who exchanged fire with the gunman were also shot, and have been discharged from hospital.

The attack stunned Washington,
in part because of its political nature.

President Donald Trump was “thrilled” with Scalise’s return and spoke with him directly, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

After slowly crossing the floor, Scalise spoke for more than 15 minutes as he thanked God, friends and the law enforcement officers who engaged and killed the shooter.

One of the officers, David Bailey of the US Capitol Police, was in the House chamber.

Scalise turned and looked up at the officer:
David, you are my hero, you saved my life.

The number three House Republican and a rising conservative star in Congress, Scalise spoke repeatedly of how his faith helped him pull through.

“I just started to pray,” he said of the moments after he was shot.
It gave me an unbelievable sense of calm, knowing that at that point it was in God’s hands.

But he also spoke of being “overwhelmed” by outpourings of love from colleagues, and by “the warm side of Congress” that most Americans do not get to see.

He detailed the visits and best wishes from lawmakers from across the political spectrum, as well as phone calls from international leaders including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and King Abdullah of Jordan.

House Speaker Paul Ryan hailed Scalise as an inspiration.

“Our prayers have been answered,”
Ryan said.

That's Great News! I haven't come across any news reports on how he was progressing and wondered how he was doing? He's making a remarkable recovery - for what he suffered through. Maybe, in time, he won't need the crutches to get around?

Scalise has a track record for working for the people and takes his work seriously. I wish him luck and a full recovery.
