Shootings and Mass Shootings

Australian news is being dominated by the story of two policemen being shot in Porepunkah in the Victorian high country at the moment.

Apparently initial reports of the incident claim that police were serving a warrant on Freeman in regards to historic sex crimes, but later reports said that the warrant was for weapons charges.

The case seems to have certain similarities to the Ned Kelly story, including the location. Kelly's final shoot out with the police was in Glenrowan, about an hour away. While there hasn't been a final shootout yet in this case, it seems as though the stage is being set with Dezi Freeman allegedly being heavily armed and hiding out in the high country.

Some background on Dezi Freeman:

6 years ago, a story was run on A Current Affair about a neighbour dispute over noise. Dezi Freeman and his wife lodged complaints about the noise polution and aggressive behaviours of their neighbours. This story includes some personal views of the locals about Dezi and his wife that indicated that both he and his wife were held in positive regard in the community. Dezi is a photographer and his wife a music teacher. After failing to resolve the issue with the neighbours, they sold up and moved away from that property.

I don't know which story the second video footage belongs to. There are two different stories that could have produced that arrest. One is that Freeman and a group of locals were attempting to gain access to Mt Buffalo national park. The other is that Freeman and a group of locals were attempting a private prosecution of Dan Andrews over COVID lockdowns. Maybe they're the same issue, perhaps lockdown measures prevented them from accessing the national park. I'm not clear on that point yet.

A private prosecution can be undertaken in criminal cases if no action or support can be gained from police or state after victims submit their accusations.

Video blogger and commentator, Rukshan Fernando, has apparently received correspondence from a friend of Freemans.

His wife and children are apparently now with the police and there is no question that they were ever hostages.

One thing I haven't been able to confirm yet is that there was mention that the Porepunkah school, which went into lockdown during the incident, apparently had a lockdown drill in the weeks leading to the story unfolding.

Timing of the incident is also curious since there were large numbers of Australians on the streets of major cities protesting for Palestine last week and an Australia wide rally against immigration is to be held on the 31st of August.

Edited to add: Here's a link to Ned Kelly's Jerilderie Letter written in 1879.

Now into the 5th day of the man hunt for Freeman. Apparently up to 450 police officers are in the area both looking for him in the high country bush, manning roadblocks and manning an operation centre. He is known to be a competent bushman and there is some question around the idea that he may have had notice that the police were coming to arrest him. The police scouring the bush are apparently throwing flash bombs into caves and mine shafts in the area, one local saying that some mine adits are 200m deep and maintain a year round temperature of 20 degrees and that would give him protection from the icy weather and sleet that the area is experiencing. So far there have been no confirmed sighting either visually from the ground or through thermal/infrared viewers from helicopters.

Protestors are taking part in tomorrows Australia rallies and with 450 police out in the high country, it will be interesting to see how rallies will be policed. I wonder if they'll bring the military in as some are expecting violence to erupt at the Melbourne rally.

Now into the 9th day since Freeman allegedly fled into the bush after allegedly shooting 3 police officers. Now the military has been put on the case to help find him and the search area has been extended out to 5000 sq kms.

Sounds like there are plenty of inconsistencies and speculations about the case.

The Aussie Cossack did reel discussing FPO's (Firearm Prohibition Orders). Since he was subject to an FPO due to his outspoken and popular protest activity during Covid lockdowns, he was aware of the protocols surrounding them. It seems that Freeman was also subject to an FPO and one of the things that AC calls out is that if a member of the public has an FPO, according to protocols they are not supposed to be approached at their own home. Usually they are pulled over when traveling to the shops or something, I remember AC filming being pulled over and having his vehicle searched for firearms. So there's something fishy about 10 policeman attending Freemans home.

There has been some speculation that Freeman is already dead. A reason given for this being hidden is apparently that since protests were planned, it would have ignited fury during the protests if the public were aware that he'd been killed.

Police now think that Freeman is not operating alone and that he is getting assistance from friends to stay in hiding. They have apparently raided a number of other properties in an attempt to find him.

Into the 12th day of the manhunt for Freeman and police are now offering a $1 million dollar reward for information leading to the apprehension of the suspect.

I'm starting to feel that there is a strong possibility that Freeman is already dead. Either that or he got right out of the area very early.

On SM people have been calling for the release of body cam footage and that has not been addressed in news reports.

Apart from the three officers that were either killed or wounded there were 7 other officers attending the property at the time and AFAIK none of them have been interviewed by the media but a general statement was given that they saw Freeman escape into the bush after the shooting. The claim is that he took the fallen officers weapons and he had a home made rifle. Apart from that, there is nothing definite said about what those other officers saw or experienced.

Military involvement was supposed to provide higher technology for the search and I note from news reports they also have military dogs on the search. Military dogs can be trained to either track on lead if they have a definite starting point for the track or they can be trained to sweep an area off leash until they detect a scent cone. In the latter style they usually continue until they identify a target area then return to the handler by a more direct route and indicate that they have found something of interest then the handler follows them back to the identified site. These days the dogs would have GPS system attached to their working equipment. This style of tracking is also used in rough country.

I'm getting annoyed at news continually stating that Freeman is a 'self identified Sovereign Citizen' who feels that the law doesn't apply to him. I've yet to find any direct quote from him saying that. Apart from him being anti-vax, pulling his kids out of mainstream schooling to avoid their exposure to liberal ideologies and protesting Covid lockdowns, he seems to have spent a lot of time trying to get justice through the courts for his grievances. He successfully defended himself against a dodgy speeding ticket and also lodged a case with the magistrates court because some locals were illegally preventing the public from using a gazetted road. He has been filmed asking police during lockdown protests why they were breaking the law. In short it sounds more like he was trying to hold state actors and agencies accountable to obeying the law including lodging a case last year against Daniel Andrews for treason and misprision. While the above is mostly a fools game, none of it alone makes him a criminal.

No further information has been given about the alleged historic sex crime claim, and some who know Freeman think that was a trumped up excuse to continue to harass him.
