[Sinkholes] creating a google map pinpointing all of them for 2012.

Ekios said:
Laura, It is already quite "visible" for the USA. I miss time right now to to some serious digging inside SOTT news, but the other countries will be add soon, and we will be able to have something even more "global" :)

Edit for another question : we are yet focusing on 2012 but I can find some sinkholes in 2011 in France and Canada, do WE add them or do WE decide to focus only on 2012 ?

Question for all :)

Whatever you like and is mangeable for you, so I could add some other German ones ;). It would only add up some more work, this is the only downside, but it could be added later too.

I also remember a big one from Sweden this year:

Gällivare, 75km from Kiruna, Sweden

And I don't know if you know this blog, which may is a big help too:

I think we should make a separate map for 2011 so we can compare, OR make the balloons for 2011 a different color. Will that work? Then we can share it on FB and see if other people can remember more.

Changing the colour would be much better. Would also give a more better perspective if it's all on one map.

Good idea indeed, now the thing is, right now ? I don't have a clue about how to do it

I will google it later and come back about it here (or if anyone knows how to do it, lets share ! )

This is amazing, guys! Thank you so much for beginning this project. It really helps to get a visual. Based on what you've gathered so far, do you think that they really are centered mostly in America, or is this more a reflection of still limited data gathering?

Awesome work! :headbanger:

Well, seems like someone already did it.

You can see yellow and blue balloons.

Blue being 2012
Yellow being 2011

FWIW you could create for every year a new map, the user could switch your public maps then (on, off, only this or that map etc...) when the user goes with the mouse over "map, satellite, traffic". Since right now everything is listed.

A solution would be inviting people and allowing them to change the map, so several people could work on it, in case of helping etc.

I am gathering a few more, organizing them by year and country plus the links, when it is done I will paste it here so you can use them on the maps, Ekios.

I can only find one recent report of a sinkhole here in Australia at Inskip, Queensland. This one is right on the beach so I'm not sure if it's the type of thing that you're looking for. It's quite a large one though - apparently 100 meters across.

Yes, it is what they are looking for. There are two articles on it on SOTT. It looks like the first one is from a different site but is the same article.

Multiple KML layers, you mean? Lemme try...

When you click on a marker (in Edit mode) you will get a pop-up box; there is a balloon icon in the pop-up box. Click it to change the balloon.

I don't mind at all to add other persons on the project from the moment that we always says here, what we add so nobody put time on something already added before :)

It only takes a gmail adress :)

When you add a kml it will give your color on it, (you are yellow, i'm blue, it came up like that) so if you add it, it will be yellow automatically.

AH !! That simple !! It is a good start for this morning then ! :)
Lets play with the balloons

Edit : added Bo's contribution, thank you :)
I realised that we could use the rich text editor while adding the points in g-maps, and so adding pictures and use a bit of style in the text, we can have an example at the one in Canada, Saskatchewan.

PS : for the Elders here, I have the hell of a time to use the quote function today, it keeps adding me things I didn't ask, even when I do some copy paste it bring other things with it.

you can make custom icons and use them with googlemaps.
