Hello,
I would like to share here some insights about the idea of objective art in Gurdjievian approach, and maybe open a discussion for whoever would be interested to correct them and/or develop further.
There was already a bit of discussion about this here _http://goo.gl/IHW7u3
I have been thinking about this concept for some time now. I do and study art (making) myself and now, being in my final year I have decided to set out on a kind of journey to try and find out more about this concept which seems completely non existent in art of modern times, so much so, that I have already met with opinions that this must be some kind of provocative, surrealist joke on my behalf. :)
Anyway, I intend to make a series of works supported by a dissertation inspired by this tenet.
What I thought of was mainly based on Gurdjieff's comparison of art to science, in that there is no discords amongst the viewers who are at the same level of knowledge, although objective art is supposed to offer it's values (beauty, information) to any man on any level of development. It should be universal. Given this feature and some other that are applied to scientific approach I would like to share what I have come up with, it's a sort of compact, but very generalized memo-framework, with some "thought shortcuts" to keep it concise. Please point out any possible mistakes, or if there's a need to clarify anything.
OBJECTIVE ART: like science - understanding via intellect, but also through aesthetics and feeling.
Like in science there must be a concrete focus and resulting concrete message to be conveyed regarding certain concrete problem. I has to be relevant to its immediate as well as broader environment, time, and circumstances.
Objective art should be rooted in objective observation of reality, determining issues in regards to which all observers reach common conclusions.
The observation process is carried out in a holistic mindset, looking for relationships amongst all smaller and larger phenomena.
What phenomena?
If the holistic approach strives to perceive the immediate and broader environment in which human has come to live and function (but hardly prosper) as intricately interwoven, then given the current circumstances there must exist issues, problems that have the potential to tamper with the ecosystem's ability to function in prosperity as a whole (let's take it as a given).
The issues are at hand, visibly affecting human environment- the planet - that is the foundation of all human experience. Thus, if the planet - home of all known and cared for is in the period of turmoil, it does apply to all known and cared for.
The conclusions stemming from a wholesome observation should be the same for all known and cared for, given that the common objective of the former is to live/evolve and prosper. Thus if living and prosperity of the former are threatened which is a conclusion resulting from the objective observation (in awareness of the common goal) of the environment (of all known and cared for) the resulting action is to determine definite key issues, warn about them (bring focus) and undertake actions to deal with them.
Human, in principle, is a creative, sentient entity, however there are ones who's actions and objectives point to different intentions. They have had long and profound ponerizing influence on the planet's environment and all sentient humans by their choices that are driven towards entropy. Because there is a strong moral restraint in determining the core nature of any entity as evil and harmful, the observation is shifted to results of one's actions and not so much himself. ("By their fruits ye shall know them")
Based on this observation the uniform conclusions can be reached without judgement of any particular entity, bearing in mind the creative principle by which most humans strive to live.
Given the above principle, at the core of which lies empathy, the issues that apply to all known and cared for point to some other - destructive force that is not driven by that principle. There are entities who's actions align with that force whether it is their conscious or unconscious choice. Their aim seems to be to suppress the possibility of reaching objective conclusions about reality of the planet. They strive to segregate and compartmentalize phenomena, and to prevent seeing their interconnectedness. ("divide & rule")
What is it that the conscientious entities' attention (thus reaching conclusions and undertaking actions) is being diverted from, given that there is this entropic force at work? Given the amount of effort it takes, it has to be something that unattended has an immense destructive potential.
What could this be in regards to a planet as a whole?
The turmoil in the broader environment of the planet.
Are there objective indications of such a turmoil in progress? (above, below, close and far)
Let's see..
And here is this framework (creditted to this forum, Laura's work, QFG and sott), that I think is universal in that there isn't anything in particular in it that would even apply to the art world (especially as it is now) But opens up a way to create things that beyond informing via their visual language (I speak of static two dimensional handmade images primarily) have also the aesthetic and felt qualities.
Of course, translated to visual language this can always derail at any point to not be understood by anyone, but time will tell..
So, am I on to something, that objectivity in art must bring it back to the world from it's abstract conceptual detachment, and along with all other cognitive tools we humans have, point out, warn, and work the way through in these rough times we are all headed for ? Would this be aligning it to the objective reality ?
Thank you for reading and any possible input.
