Some weird movements in my house (don't know how else to put it)

Sorry, find it very hard to find the English words for what is happening now. These past few days I have noticed space (about 1 cm.) appearing between the wooden floor-boards, upstairs and downstairs. It seems as if it has happened overnight. Also the built-in closet that we have upstairs seems to be moving away from the opposite wall.
The shower seems to come loose and tiles are shifting.

Any idea what this could be? I think it is really weird.

Based on what you wrote: at first, I'd thought it might be your perception but if it's truly physical, then it could be a change in the ground supporting the house - kinda like an earthquake.

Do you live in a seismic active region? Are there reports from sinkholes near you area?

Thanks Zadius Sky, for your quick reply! :)
I also thought it might be my perception, but we have had several light earthquakes or movements or whatever they are. I showed the openings between the floor-boards to my son, who then discovered that the cupboard didn't touch the wall anymore as it used to. He also told me that while doing some work on the ground in the garden that the stones had shifted. Apparently, we again had some light earth shocks (1 on the scale of Richter) last month and the beginning of April.

And Pashalis, no reports of sinkholes (that is the first thing I thought about...) in this area, but the people over here say it has to do with the extraction of gas.
We are about 150 km. away from a fault line, according to my son. Thanks!

Mariama, that does sound a bit worrying. Have you thought about moving away from there? Would you have a place to go, or do you have a place in mind?

Yes, it does sound worrying. I have been thinking about putting up my house for sale, although I have doubts that people will want to buy, especially now this report has been published that future shocks could be 5 on the Richter scale. And then we will all have a problem, because the dikes could collapse. :O
Maybe I could rent out my house for the time being and take it from there.

If we move we will move to Spain or Portugal, in view of the approaching ice-age. ;)

Yes that could be an option. Maybe you can think about having a professional look at those spaces in your house? Maybe s/he'll have some advice/input or anything, which may be of any help in keeping the house stabilized (if possible?) until you've collected enough money to make the move.

Be careful Mariama, of those cabinets/cupboards - check occasionally that they are still firmly attached to the walls.

Reminds me of the 1997 earthquake here in Italy. There were 2 big shakes, and several of minor intensity. Though the house had no major damages externally, we had a couple of doors that went slightly 'out of square', and never closed fit like before. There's a door downstairs in a box that you have to lift up a bit now, or it would scratch the floor :( Then thiny-thiny cracks opened up between the plaster walls and and some concrete pillars.

...Just check if those movements in your house are going to stop or no!

I have already filed a claim, together with hundreds of other people, but I will call the gentleman with whom I have spoken earlier and ask if he can send somebody over. This is more than just some cracks in the walls. Thanks!
