It has been a long time since I didn't get so mad at watching a movie... I recommend it a lot, here are also the original reports mentioned in the story.

The whole church system taking advantage of kids, the lawyers behind it, and all the people who knew but didn't do anything, was just sickening.. And to know this was a while ago and wondering of all the current cases or cases that we don't even know about it makes me mad. I won't talk about the movie anymore cause I'll spoil it, but I think it's a great one to watch.

On a side note.. here in Mexico it was not launched in lots of theatres, no wonder there's a connection between the Pope's visit in the next months...

I just watched Spotlight tonight. Michael Keaton does a bang up job and the cast and screenplay is first class. A very must see movie.

I agree Marina9, Its a difficult film to watch, but the truth wins out. The part that angers most is that it took so long.

Little doubt the Pope's visit was damage control PR. Although it was much earlier than the film, knowing that the investigation was underway, the replacement of Pope Benny and his lascivious leer with the much more charismatic Francis could have been the Vatican battening the hatches well ahead of the storm.

Agreed. GREAT movie. And the ending shot is perfect: subtle, moving, and wraps up all the themes of the film and brings Keaton's character's arc to completion (at the same time implying his future actions).

The film isn't about the church pedophilia per se; it's about the investigative journalism that exposed it. And it tells the story very well. It's compelling, never boring, never over the top. I also liked how the 'pedo priest' expert emphasizes that 6% of priests are pedos. Interesting figure!

Watched it too, and the movie should be an inspiration for what journalism should be, uncovering the hard-to-swallow truth even if its not politically or socially correct, even against the biases of a society and even if the powerful are trying to censor, contain, subvert.

That is the core message I think, even if the circumstances around the investigation are to be put under context, like for instance, the movie tied the arrival of a non-catholic chief editor to the newspaper to the willingness to investigate the church in a city with a strong catholic base, suggesting that if it weren't for that event, we could be still wearing blinders on the issue.

Creepy as hell when Sacha the reporter visited one of the pedophiles priests and then said this about it:

He didn’t try to hide it at all, he had this odd rationalization for it. Like it was normal to fool around with little boys.

I have just returned from watching this movie and I'm still feeling very angry and disgusted.

This is a very well-made movie and it really, deeply affected me on an emotional level.

When the lights turned on at the end of the movie I could see the bodies and faces of many other audience members mirroring the emotions I felt.

I agree with Approaching Infinity that the ending scene was done very well and I could see many people leaving the cinema quite stunned.

We watched this last weekend - fabulous movie!!!

I think it not only shows what real investigative journalism can do and what a different world we would be living in if all the mainstream media would operate that way, the movie also shows the power of conscience. The portrayal of local (ponerized) power structures is very accurate as well I think. It's also very touching. Highly recommend it!

As a side note, the Boston Globe (the paper the movie is about) published some very good pieces about Syria:

The media are misleading the public on Syria: _http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2016/02/18/the-media-are-misleading-public-syria/8YB75otYirPzUCnlwaVtcK/story.html

Watched this movie recently as well, and definitely recommend it. A lot of helpful info here in this thread on what makes this film I think, a quality film.

Noticed that figure too. The journalists were surprised at how high the percentage was. Most people would also probably be surprised to find out psychopaths likely make up 6% of the general population instead of what it's still (I believe) commonly thought to be, about 1%.
