Strong Earthquakes Hit Puerto Rico - San Juan Rumbled for the 4th Time in 3 Weeks

By Jane Lasky on 2011-12-17

A report from the Associated Press said that the first earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 5.1 and the second was registered at a magnitude of 5.3, but that could change as is typical once final readings are in.

The shallow shakers struck a mere three minutes apart, clocking in at 2 a.m. AST. Their epicenters were said to be located at about 12 to 13 miles southwest of Stella at Mona Passage, a strait that separates the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico in an area just west of the US island territory that connects the Atlantic to the Caribbean. This information comes according to the USGS who said that the 5.1 quake occurred at a depth of 9 miles but the 5.3 quake was deeper, at 11 miles.

At this writing, no tsunami alert has been sounded and no injuries have been reported although power outrages are ongoing while little damage was reported. That said, these quakes were more intense than the shakers that were felt in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean locations on November 28.

Both earthquakes last month reportedly had different epicenters, one about 40 miles north of Hatillo and 59 miles from San Juan in the Atlantic and another at 35 miles east of St. Martin in the Caribbean. As did those on Saturday, these two also hit close together, within a half hour of each other.

And so, with four strong earthquakes rattling Puerto Rico for the fourth time in three weeks, residents are likely on edge and seismologists are definitely watching the island and surrounding area with keen eyes and expert awareness.
