Superbrain Yoga

Received this video link below to a Homeopathy site which features this short piece on what they term Superbrain Yoga and did not see it discussed here unless it was missed. It seemed odd, yet the nuroscientist describes the opposite acupuncture points on the earlobes helping to make alinement with nuropathways, at least that's what was understood. When watching, was thinking it also must work on the Vagus nerve, too, with the breathing and squatting applications. Anyway, the results seem to be interesting, only three minutes to do, especially with Autistic children - here is what the main points suggest:

Main Points From the Video

In this video, a teacher, doctor, neurobiologist, occupational therapist, and parent discuss how one easy exercise:

- Stimulates neural pathways via acupressure points in the earlobes
- Synchronises the right and left side of the brain to improve function and promote calmness
- Sharpens intelligence in seniors, juniors, mums, dads and kids
- Helps those with autism, Asperger’s syndrome, learning difficulties and behavioural problems
- Is fast and simple to do – takes just 1 to 3 minutes a day
- Benefits anyone of any age

Sounds interesting. Hopefully, some forum members will check it out, do some experiments, and report back.

Interesting. It seems that the exercise synchronizes the left and right hemisphere, just like when one breathes in through the nose and out through the mouth during the EE exercises. I will experiment with the above exercise for 3/4 weeks and report back.

There is an interesting video here about this technique, "Thopukaranam now famous as Super Brain Yoga":

There are some people saying it actually works and they claim that it synchronizes the brain hemispheres.

Is this Yoga ?. :P . This is the punishment we used to get in our school for unruly behavior in india. we were asked to do this 25 or 50 times and some times 100 times too, when ever we make noise , not listening or haven't done home work etc. some times my kid gets this, if he becomes too unruly. I didn't know or heard that this is Yoga. May be its origin goes back to Yogic schools ( hundreads of years back- used to call Gurukulam ). I have no proof to show ,but it is sure it didn't came from British empire. I never heard it improves brain.

Maybe this sort of experiment will benefit from a pre-test and post-test design. What if we took a memory test before doing the yoga exercises and after doing the exercises? That we we'll have a better tracking of at least one attribute that super yoga is supposed to improve.

Here's a pretty good memory test:

I'm in, by the way. Sounds interesting.

Sounds good to me! Like doing one now, and then doing the same test after 3/4 weeks?

Good.. I will try too.
It bothers me a little though the lack of explanation as to why putting your hands on earlobes could improve brain function.
Maybe pressure point related?

I tried this several times starting yesterday. It does make me feel fresher and more alert.

I'll keep with it for awhile noting changes in memory, etc.

My knees are warning me about doing repeated, deep squats. So, I'll squat with the in-breath a little less deeply than is shown in the video.

It's always fun to experiment. The only way to learn.

That sounds like a good plan. All the stuff I've read or been taught says only to squat far enough so that your thighs are parallel to the ground. But if even that is too far, only go as far as is comfortable.

Yeah, it's usually not recommended to sqaut more than the shin and thigh being at a 90 degree angle and even less if you have joint problems, etc.

Exactly. I wasn't very clear about that in my post but at least this way we'll be approaching an experimental design.

I also noticed that pinching the earlobes like this produces a very pleasant affect. I like it!

LOL me too. Ok then I'll do the test now and also after 4 weeks. I think I'll be doing it 3 times a day, 11 ''squats'' each? Making it 33 times a day?

Yes I think so. It's explained in the video posted by voyageur.

Yea, just take it easy! I don't go that deep either. I think that holding the earlobes is the most important part anyway. I also will be breathing in through the nose while going down and out through the mouth when going up. That could be like a double synchronization of the hemispheres!

I agree with Haspen that if we find a standardized experimental protocol (with numbers lol) it could be useful (and fun). In this video the speaker made such experiments to show the effects of saturated fat on his brain activity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ztafez0pqc
Maybe we can be inspired by some of his tests?

I'm in. how about something like : _http://www.thatquiz.org/ for tests? - it has different sorts of quizzes, levels and timer + you don't need to register.
