The Economist - January cover

Re: Economist Cover 2015

Who are the colored faces? How are they different from the grey faces? Obama and Putin both have red ties. The turtle in Chinese culture is linked to Flying Star Feng Shui. That there are emphasis lines on three turtle may suggest many prophecies are coming to fruition this year... But prophecies are fickle things so who knows?

Edit: The kids story Momo discussed below also had a prophetic turtle named Cassiopaea:

And Putin's shades have an image reflection in the lens. Though can't make out what the reflection is - with my eyes

Re: Economist Cover 2015

I have to say, artistically/aesthetically, I think it's pretty bad. Just speculating here, but perhaps that's some evidence that the "art direction" was done by either a psychopath or someone with very little sensibilities? It seems like they just said "put this here, put that there" etc. Except for the b&w faces, there's very little consistency.

A bit scary though, yes. You can tell that there's some dark or weird intent behind the arrangement.

Re: Economist Cover 2015

Very good Vulcan, thanks for posting. Good observations there.

In the comment about Putins glasses showing a reflection, zooming in at 400 all I could see was a red dot in the lens which would be his left eye. !!!! Rather ominous perhaps.

So this could be an example of giving the public notice as is the pattern with so many planned events.

Re: Economist Cover 2015

This IS creepy! It's interesting what's not included too - climate change/weird weather being the most obvious one.

Re: Economist Cover 2015

it's a very striking cool/interesting cover to me. It gives the impression 2015 is going to be a significant year for national governments / economies. And it appears full of meaning. I like that they give a predictive cover, a 2015 cover published in January, but maybe that is normal. I immediately like that Obama is in front. America is still the leader of the free world for now at least. I also get the sense, the image is meant to summarize "the end" or the ending of an era from the black and white coloring. I also have the "world government" impression.. And I don't think USA can maintain a strong dollar for that much longer.. And I think a "world government" is that much closer in this case. So I don't like Obama in front, because it also suggests to me, or makes me think that the weight is on Obama's shoulders disproportionately. But not just Obama - How they place all the leaders I recognize, and the different objects, is all very interesting to take in. It's subtle things. there is nothing directly objectionable, but it's not an upbeat cover either. So I appreciate The Economist for that. I would not like a pretty picture of world leaders together or with respect to world economic situation.

Re: Economist Cover 2015

Am I missing something? All I see is another hideous, artsy-fartsy Economist cover.

Re: Economist Cover 2015

All BRICS countries are present, but what the Brazil ???? The woman behind Merkel this with an ornament on the head is made by a designer who was inspired by Carmen Miranda, born in Portugal and who made his life in Brazil, after Pele and Ayrton Senna is one that binds to Brasil.E she's not in black and white, suggesting that if there is a nuclear war Brazil is saved and the northern hemisphere anger of the population to take refuge in the South American.

The general layout has been suggested to be similar to or a spoof on the album cover for the Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

Re: Economist Cover 2015

There is a game on the bottom that has "Panic" and "Federal Reserve" written on it. Also, two arrows with "11.3" and "11.5" on them?

The mushroom cloud is right behind Cameron and Churchill.

Me too. Nothing creepy or odd about it to me - just more of your usual magazine garbage.

Oh, forgot a few things. Putin is wearing sunglasses so his eyes cant be seen....? And who is the woman behind Merkel with the nest and wings on her head?

That is straight from the runway of an Alexander Mcqueen fashion show...he took his life a few years ago. High profile suicides?

Indeed. She holds her hands fast always in this way during public appearances.
