The Great Sandwich Barter: How a Raccoon Swapped an Acorn for a Sandwich in Yosemite

I copied this from a Facebook group post, and before I copied it, I did a search just to make sure it wasn’t made up.
It’s legit.
I’ll link the news story below.
Someone commented on another post, wondering if we are perhaps seeing a “levelling up of “critter consciousness” happening, due to the “wave”.
I’m sorry I can’t find the post, nor the forum members name, but for what it’s worth, I highly suspect it IS what we are witnessing with some of these happenings!

I’ve had the chance to observe raccoons for over 30 years, we have many on Vancouver Island.
It turns out that our home is on a large lot, which was previously, 75 years ago, natural forest with a well used animal trail right across the area of where our land and home are, now.
The resident raccoons pass through nightly, and cruise our patio and surrounding yard for any goodies.
We have gotten to “know” several generations of the hilarious “Trash Pandas” over the decades, and they will take anything offered, or not locked up or nailed down, but NEVER have they bartered or traded.
That’s my experience, anyway, check this out:

“A raccoon was caught on camera bartering an acorn for a sandwich. A camper in Yosemite National Park at first thought he was imagining things when food from his pack kept disappearing—always replaced by a single acorn neatly left behind.

Determined to get to the bottom of it, he set up a camera outside his tent. What it recorded surprised him: a raccoon sneaking into camp, grabbing a sandwich, then later returning with an acorn in its paws, dropping it like payment before scurrying off into the night.

When researchers reviewed the footage, they were both entertained and fascinated. While raccoons are well known for their curiosity and cleverness, this kind of repeated “trade” was something unusual. As one researcher remarked, “Raccoons are opportunists by nature, but this almost looked intentional—like he genuinely thought an acorn was a fair trade for a sandwich.”
