Very interesting way to grow your own furniture and wooden home stuff.

"A designer in Derbyshire says he has come up with a new and dramatically more efficient way of making furniture. Gavin Munro grows young trees directly into the shape of chairs, lamps and mirror frames. Mr Munro's project has been going for the past nine years and this year the first lot of trees will be harvested to be sold as the finished products."

Very impressive. Growing such furniture must take some time though. Here is a tree/chair:

Thank you Casper, I was thinking about the same image! :) It would be cool if trees were still alive, don't know if it's possible to have living chairs at home though.

Thank you Solarmind for the interesting thread too. :flowers:

Probably it is possible to get in contact with them to see how it goes. If I understand it right they have each year 50 chairs produced, and they started 9 years ago ... I don't know, maybe it doesn't take longer than a year to grow a chair, as that is quite young tree, very thin, but just shaped properly, so the volume of one tree trunk is not needed to be big, to cut all the parts and details, as they are already implemented into the growth shape and desing. Also probably depend on the kind of wood used. Don't know didn't check in details, but was thinking that it can be good thing to do, as I am thinking more and more to move out to country house in the near future, or at least to get one on the coast or to renovate my old one, and maybe get to learn all this amazing and yet sophisticated things of merging creativity, technology and nature on more organic way. Would love to have a kind of a wood and paper craft workshop, with idea to produce new stuff from recycling, but this is also great.

And Pierre your craft with wood is just excellent, maybe in the near future you can come up with something like this :).

For the outside garden I think yes it is possible ... don't know if those one of photo you and Casper shared its it photoshop or real, but I guess it can be possible, it is just about designing the "mold" for tree to grow in certain shape and than maintain it as it grows further.

This is a video in which he explains the technique of working with wood,

Some other ideas of tree furniture here too.

There are some beautiful images, thanks for the link. I particularly liked this one as it would be a bit like sleeping in the forest :):
