Suspect of preliminary reconnaissance in murder case Peter R. de Vries detained longer

Article by ANP Productions - 4 hours ago

The 34-year-old man who was arrested Monday in Tilburg on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Peter R. de Vries will remain in pre-trial detention for fourteen days longer. This was determined by the examining magistrate of the court in Amsterdam on Thursday. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, prior to the assassination he is alleged to have conducted preliminary reconnaissance around the studio of RTL Boulevard near the Leidseplein in Amsterdam and in the street where De Vries was shot on July 6, 2021.

The man is suspected of "inciting the murder with terrorist intent and of participating in the criminal organization that engaged in (the preparation of) the murder of Peter R. de Vries."

The prosecution announced more about the suspect on Thursday. He is said to be a contact of two previously arrested suspects who filmed De Vries as he lay severely wounded on the ground. The 34-year-old suspect "was presumably the one who (passed on) the order to make the footage to the filmers." The restrictions imposed on the man have been lifted. That means he is allowed to have contact again with anyone other than only his lawyer.

The prosecution believes that the murder attempt had a terrorist intent, because of the way it was carried out, namely by shooting Peter R. de Vries in the busy center of Amsterdam, in the early evening. He died nine days later, at the age of 64. De Vries was confidant of Nabil B., the star witness in the notorious Marengo liquidation trial, in which Ridouan Taghi is the prime suspect. In 2018 B.'s brother Reduan was shot dead, in 2019 his lawyer Derk Wiersum.

Almost immediately after the attack on De Vries, the police were able to arrest the two suspected perpetrators, in their getaway car, on the A4 motorway. Against this pair the public prosecutor demanded life imprisonment in June last year. The court determined at the last moment that their trial must be repeated, among other things because of the emigration of one of the judges. They are on trial along with four others, including the man alleged to have directly directed the murder.

A total of eight suspects have now been arrested in the murder investigation, seven of whom are in custody.

All nine suspects deny involvement in crime reporter's murder at start of trial

At the start of the trial around the murder of Peter R. de Vries, all nine suspects denied having anything to do with the case or invoked their right to remain silent. The alleged gunman, Delano G., said in a crowded court bunker in Amsterdam-Osdorp: “I fully invoke my right to remain silent.”

Only suspect Erickson O. made a short statement. In a few short sentences, he denied any involvement in De Vries’s (64) murder. “I didn’t know who he was or that he was a famous person.” O. also denied having passed on information or being part of a criminal organization. Furthermore, O. claimed not to know that De Vries was filmed after the attack. But when O. was under oath as a witness - and therefore not allowed to lie - he refused to confirm that statement, invoking his right to remain silent.

The substantive trial against the men suspected of involvement in De Vries’s murder in July 2021 started on Tuesday. All suspects were present in court, as were De Vries’s relatives. The court set eight days aside for the case. The sentencing demands will happen next week, and the verdict is expected in June.

The crime reporter was gunned down on 6 July 2021 on the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat in the center of Amsterdam after appearing on RTL Boulevard. He succumbed to his injuries nine days later.

The two men who allegedly carried out the assassination, Kamil E. and Delano G., were arrested almost immediately after the attack. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) already demanded a life sentence against them in the summer of 2022, but the investigation was reopened shortly before the verdict after a new witness came forward. That is why part of the case is now being retried.

Three suspects in journalist’s murder face life in prison; Others facing up to 21 years

The Public Prosecution Service [OM] demanded life in prison against three suspects for the murder of crime reporter Peter R. de Vries. The other suspects are facing up to 21 years in prison for their roles in the assassination. The harshest sentence demands went to the men suspected of organizing and committing the murder and the two suspected of recording the aftermath and posting it on social media.

“With the murder of Peter R. de Vries, the suspects have caused irreparable suffering and an unprecedented shock in society,” the OM said in the court bunker in Amsterdam-Osdorp on Wednesday, according to Telegraaf reporter Saskia Belleman posting live from the courtroom.

Peter R. de Vries was gunned down outside the RTL Boulevard studio on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat in Amsterdam on 6 July 2021. He died nine days later from his injuries.

The prosecutor said that it has been “convincingly demonstrated” that De Vries’s murder was linked to Ridouan Taghi - the primary suspect in a sprawling criminal case about a series of street-level assassinations, attempted killings, and plots to commit murder. The case has been randomly designated as the Marengo procedure.

De Vries was a confidant of Nabil B., the key witness in that case. Nabil B.’s brother Reduan and lawyer Derk Wiersum were both also assassinated. That makes this murder one of a series. “That can only be punished very severely,” the prosecutor said.

The OM demanded life in prison against the two men who allegedly committed the assassination - 24-year-old Delano G., who is suspected of shooting and killing De Vries, and 37-year-old Kamil E., who drove G. to the scene of the shooting and acted as getaway driver afterward.

Delano G. and Kamil E. already stood trial, but the ruling was postponed just before it happened because the authorities arrested new suspects. The court eventually ordered a retrial because one of the judges relocated in the meantime and to fold in the new suspects. The OM demanded life in prison against them in the first trial, too.

Krystian M. (28) is also facing life in prison. According to the OM, he organized the crime reporter’s murder by acting as the mediator between the person who ordered De Vries killed - Ridouan Taghi, the authorities believe - and G. and E., who committed the murder. On Tuesday, M. gave his one and only statement in this trial, saying that he was pressured to pass on messages and apologizing to De Vries’s family.

Konrad W. (31) is facing 17 [years] in prison. According to the OM, he was the first person hired to gun down De Vries, but he pulled out at the last minute because he found it too risky to shoot someone in Amsterdam's city center without a silencer. He is also accused of supplying firearms, the getaway car, and gasoline to set the getaway car on fire.

The OM demanded 21 [years] in prison against 27-year-old Gerower M.C. and 29-year-old Erickson O. for recording video of De Vries after the shooting and distributing it online. According to the OM, they did so to raise fear with terrorist intent. Divainy K. (30), accused of arranging O. and M.C. to record the aftermath of the shooting and planning what to record, is facing 8 years and 4 months in prison.

Ludgardo S. is facing 14 years in prison for planning the murder with terrorist intent and participating in a criminal organization.

Christopher W. is the only suspect no longer in custody. He is accused of knowing about the murder and motive but was arrested for a separate crime before he could actively participate in the assassination. The OM believes that deserves 3 years in prison.

Seven found guilty in Dutch journalist’s execution; Will serve up to 28 years in prison

The court in Amsterdam sentenced Delano G. and Kamil E. to 28 years in prison for perpetrating the murder of crime reporter Peter R. de Vries. Krystian M. got 26 years for the same crimes. The court described De Vries’s murder as “ruthless and reckless” and showing a “complete disregard for the life of a fellow human being,” according to Parool and NOS liveblogs from the courtroom. Two suspects were acquitted, and four others were sentenced to between 4 weeks and 14 years in prison.

De Vries was shot on 6 July 2021 on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat in the center of Amsterdam after appearing on RTL Boulevard. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital nine days later. The OM is convinced De Vries was murdered because he acted as a confidant of the key witness in the Marengo trial against Ridouan Taghi and his gang. Key witness Nabil B.’s brother and lawyer were previously assassinated. Taghi denied the accusation and is not a suspect in this case, but was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year in the Marengo case.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) charged all suspects with belonging to a criminal organization. However, according to the court, there was not enough evidence to prove this. The activities were not clearly coordinated, the court said. “These are individual persons or groups of persons who do not form an organization. There was no sustainable and structural partnership,” the court said. It also scrapped the “with terrorist intent” charge against some suspects. The evidence does not show that the intention of De Vries’s murder was to frighten the population. According to the court, the fact that society was shocked by the murder does not make the attack terrorism.

The court convicted Delano G., Kamil E., and Krystian M. of murdering Peter R. de Vries. According to the OM, Delano G. is the gunman who shot and killed De Vries, Kamil E. drove G. to the scene of the shooting and acted as getaway driver afterward, and Krystian M. organized the crime reporter’s murder by acting as the mediator between the person who ordered De Vries killed and G. and E., who committed the murders.

“The nature of the crime and the way it was carried out means that there was a premeditated plan. All three were aware, and everyone’s role was important for the plan to succeed,” the court said.

The court sentenced G. and E. to 28 years in prison and M. to 26 years. The OM had demanded life against them, but because Delano G., Kamil E., and Krystian M. committed one murder and had not been convicted of murder or manslaughter in the past, the court considered life in prison inappropriate.

During the trial, M. said that he was pressured to pass on these messages. But the court found that no reasonable defense. “Krystian M. appears to have been under pressure, but that pressure did not cause such a state of mind that he could no longer do otherwise,” the court said.

Delano G. and Kamil E. already stood trial, but the ruling was postponed just before it happened because the authorities arrested new suspects. The court eventually ordered a retrial because one of the judges relocated in the meantime and to fold in the new suspects. The OM demanded life in prison against them in the first trial, too.

Konrad W. was the first person hired to gun down De Vries, but he pulled out at the last minute because he found it too risky to shoot someone in Amsterdam's city center without a silencer. He is also accused of supplying firearms, the getaway car, and gasoline to set the getaway car on fire. The court sentenced him to 14 years in prison, convicted of complicity in De Vries’s murder and illegal firearm possession.

Gerower M.C. and Erickson O. were charged with raising fear with terrorist intent by filming the seriously injured De Vries immediately after the attack and posting the footage on social media. The court scrapped the “with terrorist intent” part of the charge but convicted them of complicity in De Vries’s murder. They were both sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The OM charged Ludgardo S. with helping plan the murder with terrorist intent and participating in a criminal organization. During the trial, S. weepingly denied any involvement in De Vries's murder. The court acquitted him of complicity in the murder due to insufficient evidence. He got 4 weeks in prison for a drug crime.

The court acquitted Divainy K. and Christopher W. They were both accused of participating in a criminal organization, but according to the court, there was not enough evidence to prove that. According to the OM, W. knew about the murder and motive but was arrested for a separate crime before he could actively participate in the assassination.

The Dutch legal system allows both prosecutors and defendants to file an appeal if they dispute the verdict or sentencing. Typically, an appeal has to be filed within 14 days after the verdict has been read in court.

What about the one who ordered the murder? Lost in translation or the investigators failed to get the name or find the person?

The answer to this question (Ridouan Taghi) is hidden within these links:

The OM is convinced De Vries was murdered because he acted as a confidant of the key witness in the Marengo trial against Ridouan Taghi and his gang. Key witness Nabil B.’s brother and lawyer were previously assassinated. Taghi denied the accusation and is not a suspect in this case, but was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year in the Marengo case.

The answer to this question (Ridouan Taghi) is hidden within these links:
Yes, saw it. But he was "not suspect in this case". In the Marengo trial Taghi was found guilty of 4 out of 6 assassinations (De Vries was not among those 6) and sentenced to life. So as I understand it, that's why they didn't bother to prove him guilty of De Vries murder because it wouldn't make any change. Correct?

BTW, we know it was/is a big drug mafia, but I didn't know how big it was.

Ridouan Taghi, Wiki

Documents produced by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the United States, and sent to the Dutch police, exposed what appeared to be a large drug network headed by Ridouan Taghi, Raffaele Imperiale (Camorra's drugs and arms dealer), Daniel Kinahan (Irish reputed gang boss) and Edin Gačanin (Bosnian drug trafficker). The DEA regards this as one of the largest drug cartels in the world, with virtually a monopoly over Peruvian cocaine, controlling around a third of the total European cocaine trade. According to the DEA documents, the drugs are all shipped to ports in the Netherlands.

In the Marengo trial Taghi was found guilty of 4 out of 6 assassinations (De Vries was not among those 6) and sentenced to life. So as I understand it, that's why they didn't bother to prove him guilty of De Vries murder because it wouldn't make any change. Correct?
Yes, that's correct. He already got a life sentence for those assassinations and Dutch law has no provisions for any additional sentences to double or triple that, AFAIK.

The new Peter R. de Vries monument not only memorializes the crime reporter and his work, but also ensures that the "inhuman crime" of his murder is not forgotten, said Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema at the unveiling of the artwork on Monday. The murder will "continue to astonish for decades," she said.

De Vries was shot on July 6, 2021 on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat in the center of Amsterdam after he appeared as a guest on a broadcast of RTL Boulevard. The crime reporter died from his injuries nine days later.

“Above all, we want to continue to honor his work, his fight for justice, his critical and independent spirit, his fearlessness as a guiding principle for our city and our residents,” Halsema said.

The monument for De Vries was made by artist Rini Hurkmans and is called Tegen alle stromen in, which translates as Against All Currents. The two bronze hands are located on the Leidseplein, where the RTL Boulevard studio used to be located.

"We couldn't wish for a more beautiful location," said Kelly de Vries, the daughter of the crime reporter. The artwork reflects De Vries' philosophy and his fight for people who needed help and against injustice. The statue contains De Vries' rules of life in 41 languages.

"Stay true to yourself… When necessary, stand up for the weak and minorities, speak your mind honestly and listen to your sense of justice. And pass that on to your children. Then everything will be fine.”

"We are convinced that the monument would have filled him with pride as well," Kelly de Vries said. "My heart aches, with sadness, but especially with pride. He was truly one of a kind," she concluded her speech.

"I hope it makes people think," said Royce de Vries, the son of Peter R. de Vries.

De Vries meant a great deal to the four people who unveiled the statue, including Berthie Verstappen, the mother of 11-year-old Nicky Verstappen who was killed in 1998, and Anja du-Bois, whose husband Wilco was wrongly imprisoned for years in the 1994 rape and murder of air hostess Christel Ambrosius. They were joined by the mother of missing 18-year-old Tanja Groen who disappeared in 1993, and Yosef Tekeste-Yemane, an Ethiopian man who gained refugee status and residency after De Vries stepped in to help.

The unveiling was broadcast live on NPO1 by Omroep Max. Part of the Leidseplein was cordoned off and tram traffic was temporarily halted.

For the murder of De Vries, the court imposed 28-year prison sentences against convicted gunman Delano G. and convicted getaway driver Kamil E. in mid-June. The Public Prosecution Service is convinced that De Vries was murdered because he was a confidant to Nabil B., the key witness in a series of assassinations and attempted killings linked to organized crime boss Ridouan Taghi in the Marengo criminal court proceedings.
