The New Leaf

The new leaf

You say that love has hurt you
But it was never love
It was more the grip of fear
Inside a fancy glove
You make a lie the truth
And you say that good is bad
But something born from nothing
Was all you ever had
If love has kept you running
It's because you are afraid
Of all its possibilities
Without conditions made
Perhaps you want a contract
To make you feel secure
In black and white legalities
With assets to procure
Is this how love has hurt you?
You're not cashing in your shares
Will you exchange your fortunes?
Leave the bridge in disrepair?
For what you're really fighting
Is the hatred of yourself
And no matter what you're thinking
It damages your health
Your answer to the problem
Is always forced to break
A diminishing return
From the choices that you make
And the woods are far away now
You can't even see the trees
You're roaming through a wasteland
Where lost souls come to grieve
But even in this barren land
The wind picks up a leaf
And tosses it towards the sky
Like a token of belief
Will you pick up that token?
Or disregard it like the rest?
You say your heart is broken
But it's still beating in your chest
And every road you travelled on
Has brought you to this mark
And every action you abused
Weighs heavy on your heart
Must your eyes be opened wide
To see a glint of truth?
Or is the glare of all you see
The bitterness of youth?
For eyes should look within to see
The light you never saw
No reason to direct them there
Unless there's something more
Love does not believe in dreams
And the fantasies they breed
It's wholeness is the only theme
That you will ever need
You never recognised its face
Because it needs no mask
To welcome it, you never knew
You only had to ask
Every story you were told
Said love was out of reach
And what is more you reinforce
The deceptions that they teach
They wanted you adrift from love
And what it really is
To conquer they must first divide
To control the way you live
Hatred was the empty idol
They taught you to adore
The loneliness of death and time
Made it seem like something more
And pain was always blamed on love
Never knowing what it was
They said it has to hurt so much
Because, well just because
So as that leaf swirls in the air
A decision you must make
Do you carry on with undue care
Or let the rollers break?
For many times you tried in vain
In sorrow and in grief
Will you repeat the game again
Or cling to that new leaf?
