The proof that you should never believe your eyes

Your peripheral vision is part of your overall field of vision, which is about 190 degrees. However, it is far from perfect, and sometimes it makes us see things that do not really exist. We found an original way to prove it.

Just look at the cross in the middle of the picture below, without looking away. You will find that your peripheral vision transforms ordinary faces in "monsters".

The faces become deformed, is not it? And the more we look at the cross in the center of the image, the more the distortion is important. Why does this happen? We will explain everything step by step.

In our eyes, there is a part of the retina called the macula lutea or yellow spot. This area contains the largest concentration of cones, allowing us to see a region more clearly. It is on this area that we take the image of the point to which it directs the gaze.

In this case, the area is empty; there is only the dark with a white cross. The brain tries to take the information from other sources outside the zone - in this case, the pictures in rotation to the left and right. These sources are not very reliable, and the brain is trying to combine them into a single image. It also tries to analyze the photos in a short time, since the images are changing rapidly. The ability to discern faces is lost, and the brain combines different characteristics of different faces into a single whole. That's why we see "monsters"!

wow, this was really cool!!, I had the same experience while looking at the center cross.

Thanks Kisito for this link...

Gads! It's true! I had to quickly look at the images to make sure of what I was seeing!!!

Woah, totally creeeeeepy!! Maybe it's just that all celebrities are really monsters! ;)

Interesting illusion.

Peripheral vision is a great tool to pick up movement on the edge of one's visual field. This was useful during evolution to pick up unexpected movement which often signaled danger in the environment. It is not meant to pick up details of the image, but just alert one to changes in the scene.

In the illusion, it is an artificially contrived environment where human photographs, most likely photo-shopped, are changing rapidly. This creates the distortion effect. .

So I am not swayed to distrust my eyes or peripheral vision in particular ;) As long we use the tool for what it is primarily designed to do, we can rely on it - osit.
