The Serpent and the Rainbow

The Force is Strong With This One
I highly recommend The Serpent and the Rainbow by Wade Davis.

Wade Davis is an ethnobotanist, trained by the late great Dr. Richard Schultes, who goes several excursions to Haiti in order to uncover the botanical recipies for some of the voodouns most notorious poisons. Very well written, I can really see why this man has gained trust and respect from aboriginal groups.

There is horror movie based on the book of the same name but it is not at all what the book is about. It is pure exploitation

What I found really interesting when I read it several years ago was that Wade talks about the Bokor (Voodoo shamans if you will) serving the "loa" (spirits) with both "black and light magic". In other words they can either curse or cure when necessary.

I am also just starting "One River" by Wade as well, where he follows Schultes' footsteps in the Amazon rainforest.
