This song strikes a chord with me every now and then

Wake up kids
We've got the dreamers disease
Age fourteen
They got you down on your knees
So polite
You're busy still saying please
Frenemies
Who when you're down ain't your friend
Every night
We smash their mercedes-benz
First we run
And then we laugh 'til we cry
But when the night is falling
And you cannot find the light
If you feel your dream is dying
Hold tight
You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget
We only get what we give
Four a.m. we ran the miracle mile
We're flat broke
But hey we do it in style
The bad rich
God's flying in for your trial
But when the night is falling
And you cannot find a friend
You feel your tree is breaking
Just bend
You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
The world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget
We only get what we give
This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be ok follow your heart
You're in harms way I'm right behind
Now say you're mine
You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
The world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget
We only get what we give
Don't let go
I feel the music in you
Fly high
What's real can't die
You only get what you give
You're gonna get what you give
Just don't be afraid to leave
Health insurance rip off lying
FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes run to your mansions
Come round here we'll kick your asses

Yeah, I used to love that song - whatever happened to the New Radicals?

I play this song quite often ( the last verse is especially poignant to me) when I need to kick myself into gear :

Faithless
Mass Destruction (No Roots)

Whether long range weapon or suicide bomber
Wicked mind is a weapon of mass destruction
Whether you're Soaraway Sun or BBC 1
Misinformation is a weapon of mass destruct
You coulda Caucasian or a poor Asian
Racism is a weapon of mass destruction
Whether inflation or globalization
Fear is a weapon of mass destruction
Whether Halliburton, Enron or anyone
Greed is a weapon of mass destruction
We need to find courage, overcome

Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction (x3)

My dad came into my room holding his hat
I knew he was leaving,
He sat on my bed told me thanks son.
Son, I have the duty, calling on me
You and your sister be brave my little soldier
And don't forget all I told ya
Your the mister of the house now remember this
And when you wake up in the morning give ya momma a kiss
Then I had to say goodbye
In the morning woke momma with a kiss on each eyelid,
Even though I'm only a kid
Certain things can't be hid
Momma grabbed me
Held me like I was made of gold
But left her inner stories untold
I said, momma it will be alright
When daddy comes home, tonight

My story stops here, lets be clear.
This scenario is happening everywhere.
And you ain't going to nirvana or far-vana,
you're coming right back here to live out your karma.
With even more drama than previously, seriously.
Just how many centuries have we been
waiting for someone else to make us free?
And we refuse to see
that people overseas suffer just like we:
Bad leadership and ego's unfettered and free
Who feed on the people they're supposed to lead
I don't need good people to pray and wait
For the lord to make it all straight.
There's only now, do it right.
'Cos I don't want your daddy, leaving home tonight

Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction (x3)

Seems we've got something going here, so I'll contribute...
I absolutely love this song below, there is something about it that reminds me that I WANT to be here and wouldn't want life to be anything else.

Bjork
Joga

All the accidents that happen
Follow the dot
Coincidence makes sense
Only with you
You don't have to speak
I feel
Emotional landscapes
They puzzle me

Then the riddle gets solved and you push me up to this:

...state of emergency...
...how beautiful to be...
...state of emergency...
...is where I want to be...

All that no-one sees
You see
What’s inside of me
Every nerve that hurts you heal
Deep inside of me
You don't have to speak - I feel
Emotional landscapes
They puzzle me
Confuse

Then the riddle gets solved and you push me up to this:

...state of emergency...
...how beautiful to be...
...state of emergency...
...is where I want to be...

...state of emergency...

...state of emergency...

I'm not sure what she is speaking about really, maybe she's talking about interpersonal relationships, and the chaos that goes with it all, but I interpret the lyrics to be something grander than this and in a sense, it doesn't matter. Her voice simply penetrates my being and raises my spirit. While listening to her voice, I feel a firm resolve in my dedication to the work, yet at the same time, an irrefutable sense of gloom. Only a few albums strike me like that, Panopticon by Isis and Red Sparrows are a few examples.

Me too! Red sparowes, Isis (Panopticon), Bjork (Vespertine) are some of my favourites.

I went to see Red Sparowes last week, if you ever get the chance to see them, DO IT! Their visual backgrounds are also fantastic, lots of collapsing buildings and such. The best one was a picture of the Statue of Liberty as an old, sad woman. I thought that was a brilliant idea.

They played a lot of new stuff, too, which should be coming out towards the end of the year. Absolutely fantastic, I can tell you.

Oh, wait. Sorry Novelis - didn't see it was you. Not much point in telling you about a gig you went to.......

Hey glad to find people in here who like Isis.
I keep playing their albums over and over.

Neurosis also.

I am also very much fond of The latest Thrice album (very good lyics by the way) and Coheed and Cambria.

I have 'A Sun that Never Sets', by Neurosis, which I love. I am thinking of getting more of their stuff, what do you know about their other albums?

The album that hits me the way Novelis said, as a whole (besides Maritime and Panopticon by Isis, and Red Sparrows) is Lateralus by Tool.
It seems that there is a lot of Isis and also Red Sparrows fans around here. :)

Well, I like all those bands I said A LOT. But 'THE album' for me is 'Frances the Mute' by The Mars Volta.

I have to agree. While the filler 'noise' can be annoying at times (if I'm listening to it in the background), this album is pretty solid.

To Ben :

For me their music really struck me as special from the Souls at zero album to their latest one, that is the most mature I think (In the eye of every storm).
If you go on their official site at http://www.neurosis.com you can listen to some songs of all their previous releases.

Their other label/band (tribes of neurot) is very interesting as well if you like 'moody ambient' music.

Thanks Tigersoap. 'A Sun Than Never Sets' is scary as hell. it makes me think of some post apocalyptic desert planet with horrible, violent tribes wandering around cursing their existence. I will check out their newer stuff.

hkoehli - I hear many people make that criticism of TMV but I've always found the 'interludes' beautiful and a neccessary break between the intensity of the songs. If you really listen, there are some gorgeous little bits which require headphones to catch. They are most definitely not 'filler', they are quite intentional, idiosyncratic results of Omar's approach to making music.

Everybody - if you want to hear what Earth sounds like at the moment, get Panopticon by Isis.

Yeah, it's great on headphones, but as 'background' music sometimes falls short, IMO. But I agree, it certainly isn't filler.

One band with repetitive interludes that I can listen to in the background is Godspeed You Black Emperor, specifically Lift Yr Skinny Fists.

I've just downloaded this at E-music and yeah it's great. Also downloaded Explosions in the Sky's "The only moment we are alone" which is similar to Godpeed you! Black Emporer but a little subtler.

Highly recommended.

For some reason when I listen to Mars Volta, I get a strong 'pressure' like feeling in my head, and I wonder if its such a good idea to listen to them. No other band has this effect on me. maybe I should stick to Isis :)
