TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

In Istanbul we saw a partial solar eclipse. It was a clear and sunny day, and around 13:54 (GMT +2) the eclipse started. The sun was almost covered but a small part that looked like a new moon was still shining. I also observed the people, a small amount of them were watching, but the majority were going about their business. Total eclipse was seen in a narrow patch starting from Antalya ( a southern city on the mediterranean coast) Then when I came home I watched the TV channel that gave it on real time from Antalya with background music from Beethoven titled Silence. In Konya, where Jelaladdin Rumi lived and died, the Mevlevi dervishes danced during the eclipse for the tourists. The next total solar eclipse to be viewed from Turkiye will be in 2060 if there will still be people who will understand what that is.

Interestingly enough I just finished "The Whirling Ecstacy' by Aflaki last night, which of course features Jelal-ed-din Rumi and the Mevlevi dervishes in the story/allegory. An interesting little booklet, albeit hard-to-find... the focus on the head, and sacrificing of the head was a highlight.

Upcoming rare August solar eclipse inspires US postal agency to issue colour-changing stamps!

Sunday, 7 May 2017 - The commemorative stamp uses special temperature-sensitive inks, 'The Quartz' reported.

The United States is about to witness a rare celestial spectacle on August 21 this year, when for the first time in 38 years, the moon will completely block the solar disk for a few minutes, creating a total eclipse of the Sun.

To mark the rare event, the US postal agency is issuing a first-of-its-kind postage stamp that morphs when touched – changing from the image of a total solar eclipse to that of the moon.

Conceived by graphic designer Antonio Alcala, the colour-changing stamp features two layers of photographs.

The first image depicts a picture of a total eclipse observed in Libya in 2006.

When the warmth of your finger touches the black dot, an image of a full moon emerges.

On the back of the sheet of stamps, a map of the eclipse's shadow path, which will traverse 14 states as it moves east, from Oregon to South Carolina.

The Total Solar Eclipse stamps go on sale on June 20.
