I tend to think that rituals that are 'made up from within', that have elements with meaning, that are meant to send a signal to the Universe about the state of the supplicant, are probably beneficial.
What if they are not rituals as we understand them? I just had the following image when I asked myself the question: Imagine a musical instrument. In order for the sound to reach everyone present (the universe) you not only learn to play the instrument, you also tune it. So there are certain procedures that you carry out for tuning. If the tuning is successful the sound will be clear and strong, and you will be able to send the message without distortion.
Then there is the energy/intention you put into it when you play the melody.
And that's why I think there are religious traditions that in appearance are rituals with chanting, but by putting voice, emotion/vibration with a sincere request, you can have the assistance of the universe. Music, singing, are things that change the FRV.
