The Living Force
I think this is one of those timeless movies... They don't make them like they used to!

In the movie, Achilles seemed never at peace with himself.

In this analysis of the source material, the Iliad, the narrator states that the whole story is about forgiveness. That Achilles finds peace when he finally learns to forgive. Glory and war never brought him peace but forgiveness did.

Perhaps an interesting take on this story given current events in the Western world.

If this thread refers to the movie with Brad Pitt, I tried watching it recently. I was skeptical going in that it would be any good, but thought I’d give it a chance.

The first thing I noticed was that the main characters (or at least, some hugely significant ones) were absent - namely, the Gods. I wondered if it was just because the makers of the film couldn’t come up with a good way to portray them and Olympus, but as the film went on, I realised that it was trying to historicise the myth using modern day materialism. The point being that Gods don’t exist.

With each scene, the film does away - step by step - with the source material. Basically, things happen on the first and second day that don’t happen in Homer until after nine years. I could list a few of them, but the most ridiculous part happens during the fight between Paris and Menelaus.

Paris literally kills Menelaus :umm:

I was hoping to see a depiction of Homer’s “Iliad”, but that isn’t what the film is. It’s a modern retelling of the Trojan war. I stopped watching after about an hour, since I wasn’t interested in wasting time watching a historicised version of a myth, that itself was a mythologised version of history.

Ha! I opened this thread back in June 2020. We were in the first covid lockdown back then or they were just about to relax the "rules". Project Warp speed - remember that? Interesting times indeed.

Remembering back, I think I opened this thread specifically about the Brad Pitt movie. I think in the main, this movie was about Achilles and not about the Gods or the source material. The movie came out in 2004, which is 20 years ago - it was well made for its time in my view. Certainly engaging and entertaining.

Dialogue wasn't too shabby

Fight scenes were well choreographed

It certainly wasn't about the gods or about the source story per se, it was more about Achilles the character, and mostly about his prowess in combat.

It should be remembered that Hollywood hasn't done any Greek myths involving "the gods" any justice. They've made attempts which have been truly dire - Troy, the movie, is much much better than any other movie they attempted around Greek mythology, and specifically those focusing on the gods or the demi-gods.

Q: Okay, thank you. Now, in this other book, 'The White Goddess' about the Triple Goddess, alphabets, trees, which this author tracks back to the goddess Danu who Rhys identifies as Cassiopaea... but, in this particular section, it brings up something about which I have been EXTREMELY curious... the lame king, the wounded thigh, and the heel issue which is connected to the thigh issue... the thigh of Zeus and the heel of Achilles. Well, it seems that a LOT of heros or 'gods' had this thigh or heel issue and that later, the divine right of kings was connected to this and often a king was ritually lamed. It seems that the wound in the thigh led to an inability to place the heel on the ground which then led to a tabu against the king putting his feet on the ground altogether. Why the ban against the king putting his feet on the ground? Why did the heel have to be protected from contact with the earth?

A: In order to interrupt grounding of chakras.

Q: What happens when the chakras are grounded?

A: What happens to you?

Q: Well, a circuit is closed and energy flows out of you. When you are grounded energy flows out of you or through you...

A: Or in.

Q: Why?

A: Would you do Reiki with high heels on?

Q: No. You take your shoes off.

A: Why?

Q: So that you complete the circuit so the the energy comes into you to give to another person.

A: Yes.

Q: So, if you have a king whose feet are not allowed to touch the ground, that becomes an altogether STS mode of existence, I would think...

A: Puppetry, as one sees today.

Q: Then, when the individual has been lamed, they have become a puppet.

A: Yes, and who is the puppeteer?

Q: They have become part of the Chain of Command... STS.

A: Yes.
