Interesting article by Bowman-Hunter. However.... let's try to remember that the Southland Corp. ( 7-11 stores ) is just another major corporation that can be made to feel the pressure of the current government - more so due to its high public profile. I sometimes wonder why those writing of Citgo do not refer to the 400,000 New York users of Citgo energy that were personally granted economic concessions by Chavez??
And to speak of Chavez ( PLEASE believe me when I say I AM NOT an apologist for Chavez - although I'm a BIG fan of Caracas ) as a Totalitarian demands that, if we are to remain egalitarian, the literal definition fits perfectly to describe GDubya
As well, I'm not sure the use of the term "gaffe" really reflects
the Chavez' intention. Holding up Chomsky's 'Hegemony or Survival' has reportedly re-ignited sales of this provacative and shocking epic of U.S. imperialism and militarism that dates back to Kennedy, and before.
I try and remember that the United States strategy for the world has but one REAL supporter. That being Israel--- or, two if you want to count Macronesia. But ALL 130 of the non-aligned nations, having had a fervent but persistent backwash of distaste for anything striking of American hegemony that is being forced down their throats, are apparently thoroughly united behind Chavez.
As for Rumsfeld's comments....perhaps he's more familar with what he speaks than we know!! What else can we expect from one of the troika who gave the Iragi war??
