This appears to have been a little meteorite shower, since the probability of various people shooting distress flares in so many locations at once is rather slim.

And I thought I'd add our current Cape flooding as well, just for the sake of thoroughness:

Certainly looks like things are 'picking up' in the heavens these days.... (or is that falling down?)
