I used to work at this school, and I am a witness that it was deliberately undermined to produce the negative results that afflict it now. Until 2003 when Michael Bloomberg's mayoral control began its assault on this school, for years the principal and the staff worked really hard to create a warm, supportive and inspiring atmosphere. Some of the students who did not have many advantages in life,(I'm talking kids whose families were homeless, kids whose parents were in jail, kids who were thrown out by their parents, kids whose parents left for somewhere else, kids who were physically or emotionally challenged were able to take advantage of the programs, find jobs and/or win scholarships to prestigious colleges. Many successful alumni returned to mentor others.
This is what Wikipedia has published about the pre-Michael Bloomberg Mayoral Control school

This is what DownTown Express, The Newspaper of Lower Manhattan has to say about the school as it is now, 2008
http://www.downtownexpress.com/index.html
The process began in 2003 It took only six years to undo the work of decades.
Just think, this school had the winning debate team in the N.Y.C.
Everything is true except the damage control attempt at the end of the article. Even though the principal does not speak out against mayoral control, I suspect it's because she would lose her job if she did. My experience has been that she cares deeply for students. In fact, many of her former students came back to honor her when she became principal and rallied around her to offer their help to the current students.
A whole generation of kids have been sacrificed, used as pawns to achieve the political aim of privatizing public schools so that billions of public money can go to private contractors.
