Venezuela: Resistance or disintegration?

I have a bookmark of a Quora poster living in Venezuela whose posts I check from time to time regarding the ongoing situation in Venezuela; a kind of "boots on the ground" account of events.

He's on the side of "ousting Maduro" but I still refer to his posts for his account of new events (even if that account is obviously biased).
Just thought it might be of some of you who are following events in Venezuela.

e.g. Peter Behringer's answer to Is a military coup going on right now in Venezuela? - Quora (update of situation from 6 hours ago)

12noon 30 April 2019
Caracas, Venezuela

The situation is very tense right now in the capitol Caracas. At this hour, most residents have taken refuge at home and most city streets have very light traffic. It is not clear at this juncture if a sufficient number of military flipped sides over to Guaido to give him the upper hand or if Maduro still has control of the majority. The situation is very fluid.
As I write this answer post I can hear the detonations of fired tear gas cannisters at a street protest 3 blocks away where there is a standoff at a street intersection barricade between bands of hooded young men and a battalion of the National Police. (La Candelaria area of Caracas)
The main focal point of skirmishes so far in this “putsch” by the Venezuelan opposition led by interim president Juan Guaido (accompanied by Leopoldo Lopez) has been at the La Carlota military airbase near the Altamira interchange on the city's main expressway. Modest numbers of armed military personnel that switched sides to the opposition were clearly visible at the aforementioned expressway exit ramps and overpass.
CNN Breaking News Headlines reported an hour ago:
“Attempted coup underway in Venezuela”
This headline generated a considerable amount of controversy on Twitter a few minutes ago due to the word coup being used by CNN.
STAY TUNED!
Update 130pm:

The concentration of civilian protesters at the La Carlota airbase/Distributor Altamira was dispersed by a fierce assault of loyal Maduro regime security forces firing tear gas, rubber bullets and shotgun shell pellets. On the Altamira interchange overpass, the gathering of pro-Guaido figures, the press and rebelling military came under gunfire by pro-Maduro forces and “colectivo” gangs on motorcycles. The onslaught included a National Guard armored riot control vehicle that rammed mercilessly into a crowd of protesters on the expressway next the airbase. (caught on video).
A local independent media source on the scene at a nearby municipal clinic via streaming internet video reported 27 injured so far. No deaths were reported yet.
Juan Guaido, remaining opposition marchers, an entourage of aides and armed rebel military personnel were reported heading westbound in a caravan toward the center of the city toward government-held Palacio Miraflores. Resistance by pro-Maduro security forces was reported on Twitter by independent local media.
>>> Looks like Maduro and Co. may have won this round today.

I just don't understand the game Eric Prince is playing? He's lobbying "for a secret mission" to invade Venezuela and it's being paraded by all of the ABC-NBC-CBS -CNN news outlets ... so "How secret is it?" Is it some kind of hyped-up psychological scare tactic? And the guy doesn't come "cheap" .... "The sources revealed that he has asked for at least $40 million in funds plus a chunk of billions of dollars Venezuela has in frozen assets around the world."

The notorious US mercenary firm Blackwater has been reportedly lobbying with the administration of President Donald Trump as well as opposition figures of Venezuela for a secret mission to topple the Latin American country's president, Nicolas Maduro.

Report: Blackwater Planning Mission to Topple Maduro by Sending Mercenaries to Venezuela
Report: Blackwater Planning Mission to Topple Maduro by Sending Mercenaries to Venezuela

The exclusive report by Reuters on Tuesday, citing four unnamed sources, revealed that Erik Prince, the founder of the controversial private security firm, who is also a firm Trump supporter, has offered to deploy an army to the South American country in order to oust Maduro.

According to the report, Prince has been mainly seeking investment and political support for his plan from influential Trump supporters and wealthy Venezuelan nationals who have long been living in exile.

The sources revealed that he has asked for at least $40 million in funds plus a chunk of billions of dollars Venezuela has in frozen assets around the world.

In his private meetings, which stretch from the United States to several European countries, Prince has set out a plan to recruit up to 5,000 mercenaries on behalf of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who has challenged Maduro since January by proclaiming himself president.

The sources who had direct knowledge of Prince’s plan stated that it started with intelligence operations and continued by deploying to Venezuela between 4,000 and 5,000 forces from Colombia and other Latin American nations to carry out the mission.

The attempt is still ongoing as one source said Prince has held meetings as recently as mid-April.

Earlier this year, National Security Adviser John Bolton was photographed holding confidential papers included two lines of writing: “Afghanistan -> Welcome the Talks”, which referred to ongoing negotiations between Washington and the Taliban militant group, and “5,000 troops to Colombia”.

The mysterious line might provide clues into Washington’s secret plans to carry out military intervention in Venezuela, an option American official have stated is on the table along with other economic and diplomatic measures.

Colombia Requests Emergency Lima Group Meeting over Venezuelan Crisis
Latin American Herald Tribune - Colombia Requests Emergency Lima Group Meeting over Venezuelan Crisis

Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo has called on Tuesday for an urgent meeting of the Lima Group to discuss the situation in Venezuela.

Juan Guaido, who has been recognized as interim president by more than 50 countries, announced at dawn on Tuesday that “the military family took a step” to join him and get “the definitive cessation of the usurpation.”

A group of soldiers have sided with the acting head of state, who has said he will restore democracy in the country.

Reacting to the events on Twitter, Trujillo said: “I call on all the member countries of the Lima Group so that today we continue our task of supporting the return of democracy and freedom to Venezuela and we define by mutual agreement an emergency meeting.”

The Colombian minister added in another message that on instructions from President Ivan Duque he has sent communications to the member countries of the Lima Group to “convene an emergency meeting in order to continue supporting decisively the return of democracy and freedom to Venezuela.”

The Lima Group, of which Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Guyana and Saint Lucia are members, was created in the Peruvian capital in August 2017 with the purpose of finding a solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

However, Mexico has stayed away from the initiative since the arrival of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

At its last meeting, held on April 15 in Santiago, Chile, the group urged the international community to take measures to isolate Maduro’s regime, and on Monday it asked the United Nations to mobilize in response to the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

Venezuela Asks Interpol to Arrest 3 for Attack on Electricity Grid
Latin American Herald Tribune - Venezuela Asks Interpol to Arrest 3 for Attack on Electricity Grid
The regime of Nicolas Maduro asked Interpol on Tuesday to capture three Venezuelan citizens it says are in the United States, Spain and Colombia, accusing them of being involved in the alleged “attack” on the country’s electricity grid on March 7, for which five people are already in custody, the Caracas regime said.

“Involved are Mr. Julio Cesar Acuña Nuñez, Interpol has already been asked about him, because do you know where he’s living now? In the United States. Mr. Ramon Oswaldo Garcia Garcia, also ... because do you know where he’s living right now? In Spain,” said Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez.

In remarks to state-run VTV television, Rodriguez also said that the Maduro regime had asked Interpol to arrest Miguel Angel Jose Freitas, who “currently lives in Colombia” and works at “a cybersecurity company that has a direct connection with elements of the Colombian right.”

Rodriguez spoke sarcastically about the alleged fact that these three people are in the abovementioned countries, two of which – the US and Colombia – are regularly pointed to by the Maduro regime as being behind efforts to topple it.

Rodriguez said that Venezuelan authorities have arrested five people for the March 7 “attack” on the electricity grid that paralyzed the country for five days.

Among those five detainees he mentioned Otoniel Ramos Sanchez, who – he said – “was directly involved in the ... attack on the brain” of the country’s main Guri hydroelectric plant.

“He was already indicted by the Public Ministry and at this time he has been responding to questions from the Public Ministry and he’s given us a great deal of intelligence about who was involved in the process,” he said.

In addition, Rodriguez said that Venezuelan authorities are looking for Jesus Rodriguez Landoni, a hydroelectric worker, whom the Maduro regime has accused of being directly involved in the March 25 power outage.

“As relatives and associates tell us, he is in the US and lives in the home of a US Armed Forces officer ... an officer with the Air Force,” Rodriguez said.

The minister said that from March 7 through Tuesday the National Electric System (SEN) has suffered more than “45 attacks of a minor nature,” adding that in the last two years more than 50 percent of the country’s more than 500 electric substations have been “sabotaged” and have experienced fires.

Despite that, he said that experts dealing with the situation are “quite close to achieving a lasting equilibrium” in nationwide electricity service, given that since March 31 the government has been implementing a plan to ration power service.

The Maduro regime says that the US and the domestic opposition staged a cyberattack last March on the electricity grid and used a long-range sniper rifle to attack the Guri plant, knocking out power to almost the entire country.

However, experts say that the power failures were due to poor maintenance of the electric plants and a lack of investment in the system, a version that the opposition supports, adding that what happened is also a product of corruption at the state-run Electricity Corporation.

Guaido is planning a big March today. If the numbers are like yesterday (less then 100 protesters) - it won't be much of an event?

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has rejected the claims of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was preparing to leave Venezuela, but was talked out of it by Russia.

"Washington tried its best to demoralize the Venezuelan army and now used fakes as a part of information war," Zakharova told CNN.

Earlier, in his interview with CNN, Pompeo claimed that Maduro "had an airplane on the tarmac" on Tuesday and he was ready to leave, but "the Russians indicated he should stay." Pompeo said that US had information that Maduro was preparing to leave the country for Cuba, and Russia stopped him.

Maduro rejected Pompeo’s claims in a televised address, calling them "craziness" and "lies and manipulation." "Please, Mr. Pompeo, you're not being serious," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Guaido published a video on Twitter, in which he urged the Venezuelan military to take to the streets in order to "end the usurpation" in the country. A group of military officers and head of the Popular Will party Leopoldo Lopez also appeared in the video.

Russian Foreign Ministry urges Venezuelan opposition to avoid violence
Moscow urges the radical Venezuelan opposition to abandon the use of violence for political purposes, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The radical Venezuelan opposition has once again taken to using force. Instead of searching for peaceful solutions to differences, it seeks to raise tensions and provoke public disorder, as well as clashes involving the armed forces. We call for abandoning violence. It is important to avoid unrest and bloodshed," the statement reads.

Moscow is confident that the issues Venezuela is facing "should be resolved through negotiations without preconditions." "All actions should be in line with the constitution, while foreign interference in unacceptable," the statement says.

The Ministry confirmed that Russia believes "it is up to the Venezuelan people to resolve internal differences through political means."

US national security adviser John Bolton said on Tuesday that the US is hoping for a peaceful transfer of power in Venezuela, adding it would be a big mistake for President Nicolas Maduro to use force against civilians.

Speaking outside the White House, Bolton singled out three senior aides to Maduro who he said must make good on commitments they made to the opposition for a peaceful transition.

Bolton named Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, Supreme Court chief judge Maikel Moreno and presidential guard commander Ivan Rafael Hernandez Dala as having told the opposition that Maduro needed to give up power to Guaido.

But Bolton gave no evidence that these senior aides had said they would turn against the Chavista president. His evidence rested on conversations the Trump administration has had with the opposition.

All agreed that Maduro had to go," Bolton said. "They need to be able to act this afternoon and this evening to be able to bring other military forces to the side of the interim president."

The national security adviser also stressed the US expected for Russia not to get involved in Venezuela's political turmoil.

Venezuela's Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza accused Washington of helping Guaido orchestrate the uprising.

"It is not a coup attempt from the military. This is directly planned in Washington, in the Pentagon and Department of State, and by Bolton," Arreaza told Reuters in a phone interview from Caracas. "They are leading this coup and giving orders to this man (Juan) Guaido," he said.

Venezuela's Maduro Dismisses Coup Success in Live TV Broadcast
Maduro and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, during a live broadcast on Tuesday night accused the pro-US opposition leader Juan Guaidó and his political mentor Leopoldo López of seeking to spark an armed confrontation that might be used as a pretext for a foreign military intervention, according to the Guardian.

However, “loyal and obedient” members of Venezuela’s Bolivarian armed forces had put down the mutiny within hours of it starting shortly after 4am, Maduro said, in direct contradiction to Guaidó’s earlier remark that the president no longer had military backing. By noon there only remained a small group of plotters who had chosen “the path of betrayal … [and] handed their souls over to the coup-mongering far right”.

“They failed in their plan. They failed in their call, because the people of Venezuela want peace,” Maduro said, surrounded by Venezuela’s military and political elite. “We will continue to emerge victorious … in the months and years ahead. I have no doubt about it.”

Maduro said the plotters would “not go unpunished” and said they would face criminal prosecutions “for the serious crimes that have been committed against the constitution, the rule of law and the right to peace”.

The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also refuted the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that he’d almost escaped to Cuba, but that Russians had talked him out of it, according to RT reported. Responding to that, Moscow called it ‘fake news.’

“Mike Pompeo said that I, Maduro, had a plane ready to go to Cuba, to flee and that the Russians got him off the plane and forbade him to leave the country. Mr Pompeo, please, what lack of seriousness,” Maduro said, during a nationwide address announcing the “defeat” of the failed coup attempt.

At the height of civil unrest on Tuesday, Pompeo appeared on CNN claiming Maduro had “an airplane on the tarmac” all set to leave for Cuba, before the “Russians indicated he should stay.”

Both Russian and Venezuelan foreign ministries pilloried the American for peddling what they called ‘fake news.’

“Making up fake news is a very sad way to accept that the coup you backed has failed... once again. Diplomacy has to be restored in the US Government,” Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza tweeted.

“Washington tried its best to demoralize the Venezuelan army and now used fakes as a part of an information war,”Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement to CNN.

The violence in Caracas erupted on Tuesday morning, after US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido, flanked by a few dozen men in military uniform, released a short video calling on the army to rise up and oust Maduro from power.

Fox News interview with Donald Trump. He says “A lot of things will be going on over the next week [in Venezuela] and sooner than that. We will see what happens.” Not sure if that's just one of those casual Donald comments or if he actually has something specific in mind.

All agreed that Maduro had to go," Bolton said.

Sounds like the same old "diplomacy". "Assad must go" everyone one must just "go" away...blah, blah, blah

Fox News interview with Donald Trump. He says “A lot of things will be going on over the next week [in Venezuela] and sooner than that. We will see what happens.” Not sure if that's just one of those casual Donald comments or if he actually has something specific in mind.

I am not sure I can listen to the whole interview. I am getting sick listening to his "we are seeing what is happening with respect to the hunger, you don't see things like this anymore. They don't want food. Maduro won't accept food. I think he should frankly..."

Trump is really living under a rock or he is a willing puppet at this point. Guess he hasn't been following Yemen or any other disasters in the world. It's totally disgusting to hear him spout more propaganda to satisfy the neocon war-mongering machine.

He's hearing a lot of "Rumors about Russia and Cuba". Russia stopped Maduro from leaving to go to Cuba? Geewhiz, Trump's best source of information is just "rumors"? He's watching the staged Guaidó protests and thinks he's actually "brave".

Of course the interviewer just agrees and keeps him going. We now have Trump's form of "fake news".

What a total disconnect with all the sanctions and the contrived Guaidó coup/takeover. Even if the hunger and disease is as bad as he describes it there is no sense of responsibility on his part. Venezuela was doing so good he says and now look at how bad Maduro has allowed things to get. He has no clue that maybe the U.S. is responsible for most/much of that. Just unbelievable that he can calmly declare the "Maduro must go" mantra. I know this whole imperial mess not a new phenomena. I am just ready for a "new" phenomena without anticipating how it should arrive. The universe has to have a better idea than these psychopathic PTBs.

I don't know "why" Trump keeps playing into Pompeo's and Bolton's hands ... and doing Pence's dirty work? In doing so - he's the one that's coming off - looking like a jerk!? Is Trump's game plan ... to expose the Deep State operatives (Pence, Bolton & Pompeo) while they are incriminating themselves (disregarding International and our Constitutional laws) "in front of the World" - so that they will eventually face criminal prosecution of war crimes in front of a Military Tribunal? With that, the ICC comes to mind - who were recently denied visa's into the US to further investigate Afghanistan war crimes by the Military. That investigation is still pending but with Venezuela, the crimes are being committed and orchestrated "out in the open". All the recent Sanctions and freezing assets are in essence, a Political tool that eventually filters down to the domestic level, with the Citizens - paying for the retribution. It's more then a Human Rights violation.

The Pentagon and the War Hawks are all acting like they are in a "feeding frenzy" anticipating the first drop of blood. Even Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan can't wait to get his hands - dirty. All of them are gearing up for a military invasion AND not one of them can envision - they will be the losers! 'Pathetic!"

Trump is really living under a rock or he is a willing puppet at this point. Guess he hasn't been following Yemen or any other disasters in the world. It's totally disgusting to hear him spout more propaganda to satisfy the neocon war-mongering machine.

And notice how the Fox News woman is so excited about the possibility that Guaidó gets arrested or killed. And imagine that's just what happened after Trump predicted things would get interesting these next few days?

Anyway, one reason I think Trump is saying all that is that he is being fed the info directly from his advisers Pompeo, Bolton, Pence, etc. And those guys have reached the point that they believe their own lies. I imagine that on Tuesday they thought 'We just need a little spark and the whole thing will go up in flames!' But no - that didn't happen because the actual majority of Venezuelans, as well as most of the Army, are still with Maduro. And then the psychos in Washington were probably left scratching their heads, wondering what went wrong.
