Vices

I happened to open this post for everyone to say what vices have. I do not mean "immoral vices", if not the thing that removed our time, we create a dependency, one thing we waste and energy, etc.

I recognize that a vice for my is a books. If I enter a bookstore I almost never go empty handed.

Why would you say that it is a vice ?

You can gain quite a lot of knowledge in reading good books.

It is true, and besides I do not read trash. The problem is that I sometimes get a little obsessed with this book or that one, when I have at home a lot of interesting books to read. And my wife over something like that happens. We have books for a lot of time. Whether by my side there is some obsession or addiction.

One opinion I would like to give. There are beneficial vices?

Hi Alvaro,

Might you be using the word vice for habit or predilection? Vice is used for habits that corrupt:
1.
a. An evil, degrading, or immoral practice or habit.
b. A serious moral failing.
c. Wicked or evil conduct or habits; corruption.

2. Sexual immorality, especially prostitution.

3.
a. A slight personal failing; a foible: the vice of untidiness.
b. A flaw or imperfection; a defect.

4. A physical defect or weakness.

5. An undesirable habit, such as crib-biting, in a domestic animal.
There could be many beneficial preferred practices, but normally they wouldn't be classified as vices.

Well, considering that the development of oneself should be not only intellectual but also physical and emotional, if I have a "predilection" for something somewhere else but left other issues important to my development, then perhaps it may be harmful to have a preference that makes me forget these other important facets.

Might not a vice in reference to Work be anything antithetical to ones aim? That corrupts ones ability to attain said aim?

Am having a bit of a dissagreement with my junk food >I< this last month, sugar trying to sneak back in in the guise of "healthy" musli/snack bars. :/

Good and bad is determined by context.

Your insight shows an understanding of this.

Balance in the work on the centers prevents throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Edited for precision.

You should read "The Sufi Path of Knowledge" by William Chittick. In there, he explains the Sufi ideas about using your "vices" in positive ways.

Thanks for the recommendation.

What does "throwing the baby out with the bathwater"? I am Spanish and I do not know this metaphor.

Perhaps this will help. :)

Apologies for the use of an idiom, it was externally inconsiderate to those whose native language isn't English.

I just meant that one wouldn't have to give up a predilection entirely.

Nothing happens at all, Jerry, is normal. Here the vast majority of English-speaking people

And of course I will not give up a predilection for the fact of keeping a balance. Just give up something if it was really bad for me.
