Hello Irini,
I share the same view about the Greek orthodox church! During the 400 year turkish occupation of Greece, the orthodox church had in many cases a "special" relationship with the Turks. Under this "relationship" when Greeks wanted to save their fortune from being confiscated by the Turks, they could "donate" everything to the orthodox church because the church property was strangely respected in most cases. When the turkish occupation was over, the church did NOT return any of this great fortune back the people. Instead, they used and still do this colossal fortune to gain political influence and power. Greece still is a very conservative country in many aspects because of the great corrosive influence of the Orthodox Church in our lives. My grand father, being an orphan because of the early 20th century balkan wars, was raised in a church orphanage. He told me that the priests used the starving kids to gother fruit and other products from the land owned by the church. They were not allowed to eat a single fruit from the ones they were picking! Fruits were never on their diet, because they were ment to be sold, not feed the orphaned-workers. It was maybe a way of the priests to "teach" about the "forbitten fruit" probably. My grandfather was starving and was beaten for asking a piece of bread when it was "not proper" to eat. He also told me a lot of other stories concerning the abuse of these poor kids.
Anyway, this is a long subject! The fact that most modern Greeks identify themselves so much with the orthodox church, is but an indication that all we have in common with our great ancestors is their land, which in our turn rape and mistreat "in respect" to their memory. Sad, bad true.
Thank you Irini.
