Do someone know why do we smoke? is there any trace of where the smoking habit begun? from whom did we get that habit? was a lucky shot against 4d sts dudes or we had help there?
I don't know really. In Europe tobacco was first brought back from the South American continent, but where the tribes people there got the idea from who knows.
It is a fascinating question though, I often wondered at the traditional knowledge that has been gathered about other beneficial plants and herbs. How did people know that a given plant would have this or that useful quality? Maybe such traditional knowledge stems from very ancient times when there was a different awareness or and relationship to nature, or perhaps it was part of the shaman's role to bring such knowledge back? Maybe to partly answer your question you could research the link between Tobacco and Shamanism in South America?
as i experienced once, you can build up a connection to a plant.
felt like some kind of telepathy.
but i think, you find out this way, if you can use it.
shamanism should know the ways, to "speak" to plants.

Few years ago, traces of tobacco have been found in an Egyptian mommy. Tobacco appears to have been known in the old world. In any case, even without tobacco, people used to smoke. And maybe they smoked other plants to emulate tobacco who disappeared long ago, for eventually cataclysmic events? Just a possibility.
