"Midnight Sun" sung by Maggie Reilly
Many turned to see the light
Wondering if tomorrow would they know?
Rainbow-coloured, jewel-bright
Glowing through the softly falling snow
You can call for a way
Turn night to day
And follow the midnight sun
Midnight sun
Ever since the madness fell
Captive of a never-ending daze
Stranded in a timeless spell
And held inside a gilded maze
I wonder how long must it take
Till the sleeping awake?
To follow the midnight sun
Midnight sun
You can call for a way
To turn night into day
And follow the midnight sun
Midnight sun
And you follow the midnight sun
Midnight sun
Mirrored in a frozen pool
Images of a long-forgotten past
We all share fragments of a memory
The answers held within this crystal glass
I wonder how long must it take
Till the dreaming awake?
To follow the midnight sun
You know if you look you will find
In your soul, peace of mind
And follow the midnight sun
Midnight sun
And I'll follow the midnight sun
Midnight sun
Maggie Reilly was one of Mike Oldfield's chief singers in the 80s, before she established a solo career. Oldfield is well-known for his "Tubular Bells" albums. When I first heard "Midnight Sun", I just loved the melody alone; however shortly after that I realised that the lyrics themselves are equally intriguing. They recognise that most people have been asleep "ever since the madness fell, captive of a never-ending daze, stranded in a timeless spell, and held inside a gilded maze". But the song does offer hope that we can "call for a way to turn night to day". The "midnight sun" is therefore a metaphor for a guiding principle which leads us out of the "night", a thing which we at SOTT call "The Work".
