This song by Gospel/RnB singer Mavis Staples (formerly of the Staples Sisters) came up on my playlist recently. I particularly like the way this track is produced. It's one of this songs that starts rather simply and then layered with more instruments and voices as it goes along.
She first verse features just her voice and solo guitar. The second verse sees the addition of bass and drums and this rather unusual distorted electric guitar, which is odd for a gospel song but seems to fit the overall feel of the song. The third verse sees the introduction of the more traditional sounding gospel back-up vocals.
Even though she sings the exact same lyrics 3 times in a row, the simple addition of new instrumentation as it goes along adds subtle dynamics to the song so that it remains interesting throughout.
Another song in a similar musical vein that this reminds me of is by American jazz singer/songwriter Cassandra Wilson, and her take of an old Son House tune. I find the use of simple chords accompanied with a bluesy singing style quite compelling.
