What are you sleeping on?

Reading an article a couple of weeks ago(in Norwegian) by a healer, he stressed that the first thing one needs to do to achieve health is to get rid of your spring-coil mattress if you have one. His point is that it works as an antenna that gahters EMF from diverse appliances, wifi, pwerlines, celltowers(maybe even cosmic?).This might keep the bodys cells in a state of constant stress and prevent optimal regeneration during sleep. This information really resonated with me and I realized that I was sleeping on approx. 70kg of steel.. Often tired and lacking energy..

I decided to order a mattress(coldfoam oeko-tex) and meanwhile I sleep on an old foam mattress to see if this will help with sleep issues.
I am aware of the importance of no electric appliances in bedroom and total darkness.

Found this article on mercola:http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/08/18/your-box-spring-mattress-could-be-acting-as-a-gigantic-cancercausing-radiation-antenna.aspx

Do you have experiences on the topic and/or what do you think about this?

My apologies if this has already been covered in another thread, I did not find anything through the search.

Very good question birk, What Am I sleeping on? I've looked at this topic off and on over the years but never made any real change but still use the standard, box spring/mattress. But you are raising important points here and I really know nothing about this so a very good thing to know. I too feel tired a lot and that my sleep is being affected in a way so that its not optimal. I have eliminated all light though.

Goodness, becoming a member here can be expensive!

Do I need to now buy a new sleeping arrangement? I'll put it on the list next to the farred sauna. ;)

I've been using a latex foam mattress and works pretty well, fwiw. Tried the air adjustable beds, similar to sleep-number but for me just don't seem to be as comfortable.

Well, I'm sleeping on the common sofa's surface of soft filler. I don't get the point of considering of the material I'm sleeping on, at this point personally for me the main thing is to become able to sleep on my back instead of long far habit to sleep on my belly or sides which cause discomfort and spasm in some areas of backbone. The problem is that I simply cannot fall asleep during lying on the back.

Thanks for bringing that up, I sleeping in this spring mattress and I have back/neck problems.

I have thought of memory foam since I haven't found the mattress that has a hard surface around the area
The reason for me keeping this mattress is because I have had bad experiences in other mattresses , but I think it might be my body being used to this mattress.

but nothing a couple of nights cannot fix. I hope.

I found an interesting article, I think I could answer your question, could you help.

How to choose the best mattress for a restful sleep.

The role of sleep for our health is priceless.

When I say "good mattress" does not mean a particular mattress of a particular manufacturer. For as we all do - individual, so you need to choose a mattress and individually according to their needs.
Offer mattresses on the market is huge and diverse that can be confusing when choosing a new mattress.
This short guide will help you choose the best mattress for a good rest.

Mattresses with gel have appeared on the market relatively recently.

Gel was developed primarily for usage in hospitals because it is extremely flexible, sterile, flexible and well absorbed the pressure.

The gel provides the body with good support, but it is also incredibly soft. This material relieves painful back even better than latex or memory foam.

The mattress can not consist only of the gel, because the gel is usually combined with a spring or memory foam.

If you suffer from neck pain, lower back pain or back pain, mattresses with gel are a great choice for you.

Nowadays, it is difficult to find a mattress that uses only one type of material. Most of the mattress is made of several types of materials.

For example, the mattress may have a core of a gel and a few extra layers of memory foam.

Mattresses made of latex often have only the core of the latex, and the rest of the mattress is made of memory foam.

It is very important that you know in advance of any material you want the mattress and be persistent to find the mattress that you want.

Try mattress!

The stores are mattresses exposed not only to keep them watching. They are there to try them.

Lie on the mattress and try it in all positions for sleeping. Time trying out each mattress should last for at least 15 minutes.

I suffer of back pain and neck for quite some time.
I have sleep for a few years on a bultex foam mattress (Without cover - 10 cm x 190 cm x 57 cm). I have recently add a thin mattress (3 cm) on top of it. It reduce the back pain a bit.

me too I have a spring loaded mattress, and never had any problem till few years back, it has been 3-4 years that I have been having this back lower pain, and I thought it was because of the mattress, that I decided to buy a new one and the problem comes and goes, then I noticed that when I do lots of cardio is when I get these lower back pain the next morning.
but other than that I have no other problems. :cool2:

My 30+ year old Stearns & Foster box and mattress set is probably 10 years beyond it's prime. Sagging somewhat in the middle is my biggest complaint.

I purchased a memory foam topper about 4 years ago for 100$ or so and was a big improvement. Having totally darkened the room has me sleeping great!

Occasionally awakening to a dream (I dream a lot) I immediately fall back to sleep. No electronics probably helps as well.

Upgrading bedding inevitably will take some brainstorming with the information y'all are providing!

Thanks! :read:

Thanks for bringing this up.

There is an old joke about amateur radio operators that if you have nothing else, you can tune up a bed spring (use it as an antenna for transmission and reception). I guess there must be something to it!

Personally, we use a wooden bed with a futon mattress, which is made of coconut material, cotton and latex. These futons are rather hard, which I prefer. Back problems are way better than they used to be, but this of course may also have something to do with a better diet and daily exercises, which I started around the same time I got the new bed/mattress.

I bought 2 3" memory foam mattress toppers off amazon for £40 each, best thing I ever bought. I doubled them up and sink my way to a perfect nights sleep.

I've read about alleged EMF affects from spring mattresses, but was never convinced though it's been on my mind at various times over the past decade or so. I personally sleep on one, but use a 2" latex mattress pad on top of it for comfort. I read about concerns about off-gassing with memory foam, so I never went that route. I like the latex mattress pad because it's springy and comfortable. Last year I had to replace one that I had been using for about a decade as it had begun sagging and was uneven and generally uncomfortable and the new one's been nice.

Coiled spring mattress - are they safe?

I was looking into buying a new mattress and most local experts including my chiropractor claim that spring foam mattresses are far inferior to spring mattresses when it comes to support and also hygiene if you live in fairly damp climate.
I remember reading in the past about spring mattresses amplifying the EMF but everyone is saying that is nonsense.
I was hoping our resident EMF experts can provide more insight. Thank you.

My wife and I recently (6months ago) got rid of our spring/bo setup and replaced it with an air adjustable sleep system.
She likes the soft feel but I require firm due to back and hip injury...I keep my side turned all the way up.
We sleep better it seems..I feel more rested but usually don't sleep more than 4-5 hours before pain sets in from old injuries. We have removed all electronics from the room and only have 1 fan that circulates there now. Now we need to do something for a shield from emf/emp due to the power company's meter on the outer wall.
As a side note, it seems I don't dream much anymore..or at the least I seem not to be able to remember them now?...but I do have nights where I can't shut down the brain so to speak and get rest....seems events play and replay in my mind on those nights. Happens maybe twice a week...and it's not fear based or doom-gloom type things...just event replays. I feel it's due to the many changes along with new "learnings" in my life...
thought I'd mention that to see if others can relate.

I slept on a 100% memory foam mattress for several years and had acute lower back pain for around the same time. Once I switched my mattress out it stopped. I went with a spring mattress that was topped with natural latex and wrapped in some sort of coconut fibre to save money, if I had enough I would've bought a 100% natural latex one.

Even now if I sleep on a friends memory foam mattress I keep tossing and turning and can never seem to find a position that remains comfy for long.
