What do these two trees reveal or symbolize about our 3D existence?

Aside from symbolizing anything esoteric, I wonder how this is physically possible--and even more mundane, why someone cut the trunk off the smaller tree to begin with?!

It looks like a photo montage.

If it is real it is very strange and incomprehensible.

I have done a little search on that photo and it seems that it is real.

The phenomenon begins when two branches that grow separately begin to approach each other until they touch each other. At that moment, and due to the movement caused by the wind, the bark begins to wear and the cambium (the layer of tissue found under the bark) of each branch comes into contact, beginning the fusion or autograft process, since They grow together as the branches increase in diameter.

Humans use this to graft one tree onto another - like apples … but certainly this is a wonderful photo!

This phenomenon brought to my mind such ideas as "helping put someone on the step behind us as we take another step up the staircase" (Gurdjieff); the interconnectedness between us and others, and nature; and that if we strive to grow upwards, our "higher self" will meet us where we are and assist us.

The cut doesn't look clean, the bottom part of the newly grafted tree most probably went dry and died, then broke due to the "father" continuing its growth. The 2D world never cease to amaze me.
