White showing under iris prejudice

Looking at the photo of Poplawski in this posting, I'm reminded that I apparently have a prejudice against people who have the whites of their eyes showing under their iris. I don't trust them - as if they're not fully there (behind the eyes) or something. I remember one lad at school with eyes like that who was regarded as a 'Total Psycho', and another girl at Uni who I found to be most manipulative in a passive aggressive sort of way.

Looking around my office just now I can't see anyone with that sort of eye shape, which is interesting. All of their lower eyelids either overlap or touch their irises (plural?).

Well I guess it's something I'm just going to have to be aware of and try to form a more evidence based opinion of the next person I meet with whites showing under their irises.

Anyone else have a thing like that or am I out on a limb here? Any idea where I could have picked this up from - childhood bullying perhaps?

Ahh, apparently plural of iris can be irises or iris or irides

Maybe you're picking up on an affectation that's been 'perfected' to garner sympathy? When people show the whites of their eyes it can indicate a stress response, and be used to garner sympathy. I know stage actors work on body language in mirrors to perfect this kind of thing.

With this guy you've mentioned, it never touches the rest of his body. He's done it the 'lazy way', and just uses his pretty blue eyes. It could be totally unconscious on his part, because I've seen psychopathic kids do this same thing to manipulate people. Its eerie to see them play around for what 'works'.

Ahh yes, thanks Gimpy, that could be it. I have a tendency to react against (what I see as) emotional manipulation, especially when it's fishing for sympathy. This is a trait that has not served me well in the past, and is something I'm working on in an attempt to improve my empathy.

The look reminds me of Droopy Dawg. Compare here with the antithesis of the sympathy ploy, Mickey Mouse.

Cheers,
Spoon

PS Not trying to be frivolous here - I find these cartoons/caricatures helpful because they simplify and exaggerate physical attributes being used to express an emotional state.

I remember hearing somewhere, a long time ago, that whites showing under the eyes in a consistent way (not just a momentary look) indicated a hysterical personality. I dunno if this is true, but I've always felt uncomfortable around such people.

My former brother-in-law had whites showing under the iris, and he was a psychopath. I remember, when he gazed, I felt very uncomfortable, as if he was ready to attack at any moment unexpectedly.

I've also seen some people who have "regular" eyes under normal circumstances, but white were showing around iris, along with hard to describe twisted grin (teeth were showing from one side of the face with cheeks/lips pulled towards the ear) when at rage or responding aggressively to some situation (they looked like on auto-pilot). I've seen at least 3 people with identical mimics/reactions.

Look up "sanpaku eyes" or sampaku eyes online. I just did and copies and pasted a bunch of articles only to have them disappear.

Notable people with this characteristic:

Abraham Lincoln
John F Kennedy
Robert Kennedy
Marilyn Monroe
John Lennon
Susan Sarandon
Princess Diana
etc..

After a little search, I found this site and a definition of sanpaku that's interesting: http://www.leviticus11.com/sanpaku.htm

It's selling an English translation of the book, and here's the blurb:

by George Ohsawa, the Father of Macrobiotics; English version by William Dufty

This book will introduce two new words into your vocabulary. The first, a well-known Japanese term, sanpaku, describes a condition in which the white of the eye can be seen between the pupil and the lower lid as the subject gazes directly forward. This condition connotes a grave state of physical and spiritual imbalance. The sanpaku is out of touch with himself, his body and the natural forces of the universe. Symptomatically, sanpaku can be recognized by chronic fatigue, low sexual vitality, poor instinctive reactions, bad humor, inability to sleep soundly and lack of precision in thought and action.

The second new word, macrobiotics, is the simple, natural means of correcting the dangerous sanpaku condition and creating a state of health, harmony and well-being, within and without.

Based philosophically on the ancient Oriental concept of Yin-Yang forces in the universe, and biochemically on the important relationship between sodium and potassium in the body, macrobiotics has been known and practiced in the Far East for many centuries.

The macrobiotic diet, the author claims, not only cures existing ills but fortifies the body against disease. And macrobiotics has been welcomed by weight-watchers as a means to rapid weight loss.

This book will also introduce you to the ten-day brown rice diet.

I'm not sure if this is a genetic characteristic, result of bad surgery, or an expression a person can learn to do....maybe it's all three? I've got a Sherry Rogers book on a basic macro-mellow diet, and am having trouble finding the sea vegetables, but I have allergies to some of them and have to go ssssslllllooooww. :)

And I'm not too sure just changing a person's dietary regime will stop or correct this kind of physical characteristic, but stranger things have happened. I know changing my diet's done wonders for my health, but it hasn't made my butt any smaller or my hair less gray.

I too have heard that this feature may be linked to mental imbalance. I remember a couple of people in my life who had such eyes and were manipulative or downright crazy. But then, there were other people whose eyes were "normal" while they were not :/.

I am not sure what you feel is "prejudice". It looks more like an instinctual hair-stands-on-end reaction, coupled with prior observations of people with such features.

The key IMO is to use your consciousness not to pre-judge people based on the look alone. I don't think it's difficult -- would you notice the person's eye shape if nothing bothers you about him\her? I probably wouldn't and probably hadn't in many cases. On the other hand, if this feature is absent but there is an internal SOS signal going, one shouldn't ignore it either.

fwiw

I've read some stuff about sanpaku (being 'kindof' sanpaku myself, sorry guys )

There is Yang, and Yin sanpaku. This condition can be triggered by certain events, shocks, or poor health, apparently:

"Diana, Princess of Wales had a rare condition called sanpaku, and so does Cherie Blair, according to the artist David Hockney. Sanpaku is a Japanese word that means 'three whites'... Hockney noticed that in photographs and on television, Mrs Blair gazes out with the typical sanpaku wide-eyed stare, the whites of her eyes clearly visible above and below the iris... people who are sanpaku are believed to be more prone to violent death. John Lennon was sanpaku, as was John F Kennedy. There are two types of sanpaku. Yang sanpaku is when the whites show above the iris. This is rare and is usually associated with anger and aggression [psychopathy?]

Yin sanpaku, when the whites show below the iris, is associated with vulnerability. "These people, like Princess Diana, see the world at an angle and are likely to run into trouble in their lives," says Sandifer.

Cherie Blair, who has white showing all the way round her eyes, could be said to be doubly afflicted.

Luckily, sanpaku is curable, but it can take time. Sandifer suggests taking up sports that require good hand-eye co-ordination.

"Games like tennis and squash help to exercise the nervous system. Martial arts are also excellent."

Sufferers can also follow Yoko Ono's advice to John Lennon and change to a macrobiotic diet, eating foods that grow in their natural environment. Those with yin sanpaku should avoid tropical fruits, coffee, chocolate, sugar and alcohol, which increase their yin, or feminine side. //cutting ends"

When the wave reached me I, too, rushed out toward Bobby [Kennedy], but unlike the others I made no attempt to touch him, contenting myself with looking into his face from very close up. I was amazed at what I saw: here was a man who had gone farther past exhaustion than I would have thought possible. I could see in his face what seemed to me to be a mingled glee and horror that his enervated condition had made it impossible for him to conceal. I was familiar with the expression “sanpaku eyes,” meaning that a significant area of the white of each eye is visible below the iris and above the lower eyelid, a condition which is said to be a sign of great imbalance and poor health; and the first thing I noticed was that Bobby Kennedy’s eyes were way beyond anything I’d ever seen as far as sanpaku-ness was concerned. The irises of his eyes seemed to be rolling violently upward, giving the impression that he was able to look out into the world only with great effort. Yet he kept grinning away and grabbing any hand that came near, and saying “Thanks for coming” and “Glad you could come” in that familiar voice, now worn to a rasp. I started stepping back toward the curb, but somehow – I can’t explain how it happened – I found myself walking beside the car. The crowds were staying on the sidewalks – except for those people who lurched forward to touch Bobby’s hand and then lurched back – so there was a corridor on either side of the cars between them and the crowds. And somehow I started walking alongside Bobby’s car. It was moving so slowly I could easily keep pace with it. I became a person walking ... walking very near ... to this very sanpaku Man Who Would Be President.

Well, the examples given above are not quite what I am talking about. Those all look rather normal (except the last one and I think the guy has some kind of artificial enhancement of the feature). Diana just looks like she's looking up with her head bowed slightly, JFK and RFK just look a bit hyper-thyroid or extremely tired. Lincoln probably had some physiological issues too considering how he was built and all the speculation about that - and he was probably tired too!

I've seen your eyes and they do not look like a psycho! In fact, you have looked tired too! That's not terribly unusual with small children...

The guy at the bottom is really creepy looking and I've known a couple others that were really creepy looking.

Well I'd rather look tired than like a psycho or a hysteric so that's OK :cool2: I've always been a bit low on energy so that's not only my children either.

It's true that kind of look is different from JFK and the others. It's a killer / seductive look, not at all a "droopy-asking-for-sympathy" one. Judging by all the comments on this actor's eyes, a lot of girls just melt at this kind of look.

Sanpaku Eyes - The Ill(uminati) Eye.

Hi, I found this article yesterday, almost by accident while researching 'Chinese face reading'.
It really suprised me as I went through quite a hi-stress youth, loosing both parents and surviving all sorts of 'trauma'.
The main thing that 'spun me out' so to speak, was that I actually posses YIN Sanpaku (perhaps as a result of this trauma...) and had not heard of it until yesterday.... Also strange 'coincidence?' is that I went through an almost fatal battle with Anorexia and while I was in the state of starvation would draw pictures, somewhat unconsciously... I often used to draw what I now know as the Illuminati symbol/ all seeing eye, which is Yin Sanpaku also...(I'd literally draw the Pyramid with the triangle above it & the eye, having never heard of or seen it before) The article/ web link I have pasted above is very interesting.

Thought you may find it of interest also.

Still feeling a little naieve about it all but really intruigued. Have ordered the book 'You are all Sanpaku', shall let y'all know what it is like. I'm looking forward to finding out if this trait can be rectified/ balanced and if it has to do with possible past life karma or pre determined fate.

I get what you mean.
I've always refered to them as 'wolf eyes' since I was a child.
Always approached them with caution.

Just keep at it,Gimpy, it wont happen overnight ,but it will happen :) as they say in the shampoo commercial, :D
I have come across the sanpaku eyes in my shiatsu training...it is part of the facial diagnosis in TCM
we were told to watch for the yang sanpaku, white above,as a sign that the person is about to physically attack you

I did change my diet back then,12 years ago, and by now my butt is way smaller :D big butts are called "dampness in the lower heater" in TCM so keeping your feet dry and warm helps too
my hair has gone from dead straight to almost ringlet curly ( it still went gray but there is a Aloe treatment you can try to make it grow back in its original colour)
my double chin is gone and some of the lines around my mouth too

that is the whole point with facial diagnosis ...as your health improves it has to show in your face
also as far as TCM is concerned there is no psychological problems all mental states are a result of organs being in balance or not ,for example wood element ..liver...a "full" liver makes you angry and a "empty" liver makes you depressed and so on
