In his book, Zombie Politics and Culture in the Age of Casino Capitalism, author and scholar Henry Giroux connects the dots to prove his theory that our current system is informed by a "machinery of social and civil death" that chills "any vestige of a robust democracy."
I have not read the book, but I just watched this video. It is highly recommended. Here are my notes about the contents:
- life is reduced to the survival of the fittest
- 2-party political systems are not suitable for human psychology
- when reducing social values from government, only punishment is left. Violence is the only way left to experience pleasure.
- government claims no responsibility, and instead puts all responsibility on the individual. blaming the victims.
- the only responsibility of individuals is to consume
- people are more and more seen as 'disposable'
- casino capitalism doesn't look into the future: only interested in quick returns.
- education has been collapsed into mere training. data is seen more important than knowledge.
- culture is ran by accountants rather than visionaries
