Geopolitical Analysis: A Bird's-Eye View of the Global Situation

Nothing is "entirely symbolical", and 'political power' is kinda an oxymoron. But yes, being in the Commonwealth has more of a practical effect day-to-day.

News about China is pretty limited in our area, but there seems to be a purge movement going on regarding the Chinese military leadership. Cleaning up corruption or Coup-d-etat are the speculations.

Reports are seeping out of China revealing a large number of Generals and other High-Ranking Officers in the People's Liberation Army have been ARRESTED. It has the appearance of a "thwarted coup d'Etat."
Many people are still arguing endlessly over whether Zhang Youxia has been arrested or not. One source told me that "the news of Zhang Youxia and 17 other senior generals being arrested is absolutely accurate, including General Liu Zhenli, General Xiao Tianliang, Lieutenant General Zhong Shijun, and others.

At the center of the storm is General Zhang Youxia, one of the most influential figures in the Chinese military and widely regarded as a close confidant of Xi Jinping. Over the past six months, at least 11 top PLA commanders have either been removed from their posts or placed under investigation, indicating an unprecedented internal purge.
...
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Zhang Youxia was taken into custody by military anti-corruption authorities earlier this week. The allegations against him include corruption, failure to rein in close associates and family members and not reporting serious issues to party leadership in time.

The move has sent shockwaves across China’s military establishment as Zhang is not only a senior CMC official but also a member of the powerful 24 member Politburo, which sits at the core of China’s political decision-making.
...
Critics argue that while the drive claims to curb corruption, it has also significantly strengthened Xi Jinping’s control over both the Communist Party and the military.

In a speech delivered in October 2025, Xi himself warned that corruption posed the greatest threat to the party and described the battle as ‘difficult and complex.’ Against this backdrop, the ongoing purge within the PLA, especially targeting commanders linked to the India-facing Western Theatre Command, is being closely watched for its implications on China’s internal politics and regional security dynamics.

Du Wen, the Executive Director of the Legal Advisory Office of the former Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government, disclosed that according to insider information, Zhang Youxia, in collaboration with Chief of General Staff Liu Zhenli, planned to mobilise troops to stage a coup against Xi Jinping under the guise of saving the party and the country. Unfortunately, they were betrayed by someone in their inner circle, reportedly the Deputy Chief of General Staff.

Current reports indicate that the existing command structure of the General Staff has been suspended, with direct command now being issued by the Central Military Commission via encrypted telegrams. All military units are on high alert, and all military movements have been immediately frozen and halted. Officers and soldiers have had their mobile phones confiscated for centralised political education.

Here is a summary of a report from this group (About ) pointing in the "failed coup" direction.
As usual, discernment is advised in gauging these news reports and sources.

The January 2026 purge of General Zhang Youxia and General Liu Zhenli represents the most

significant internal crisis for the Chinese Communist Party since 1971. The intersection of an

alleged coup attempt, a total command hierarchy suspension, and an unprecedented military

lockdown indicates a regime at war with its own primary instrument of power. While official

media frames the event as an anti-corruption victory, the reality is a structural rupture that

threatens the PLA's 2027 readiness and the Party's long-term stability.

The move against Zhang Youxia, the ultimate princeling loyalist, signals that no revolutionarypedigree can protect an officer from the demands of absolute, singular loyalty to the Chairman.

As China navigates the 15th Five-Year Plan and a hostile international environment marked by

trade wars and strategic mistrust, the 2026 purge will be remembered as the moment the Party

chose total control over professional military stability. The consequences of this choice—for

Taiwan, for the global economy, and for the survival of the CCP—will unfold in the critical

months and years ahead. Residents of Beijing and international observers alike must remain

vigilant as the potential for sudden political upheaval remains at its highest level in modern

history.

Why would 'political power' be an oxymoron? Certain groups (open and hidden) exercise a lot of power through politics. As an example, the covid restrictions were done through political power.

And what power does the king have in Canada that is not entirely symbolical? We both agree that the Commonwealth membership goes beyond symbolical and ties Canada somewhat closer to the UK, but that has nothing to do with whether the king has any power in Canada.
