Earthquakes around the world

Only two days ago on Wed. 19 Aug. twin shallow 6.8 & 6.9 magnitude earthquakes hit Indonesia within 10 minutes of each other.

As reported by Dr. Tony Philips recently in Space Weather Archive:

"During the next solar cycle, we could see cosmic ray dose rates increase by as much as 75%," says lead author Fatemeh Rahmanifard of the University of New Hampshire's Space Science Center.

Is there a connection between cosmic rays, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions?
As noted on Spaceweather, there was also a Coronal Mass Ejection being ejected on the 16th and scheduled to arrive on Earth on the 20th. On the 21st, Spaceweather wrote:
CME MISSES EARTH:
There's still no sign of a CME expected to hit Earth yesterday, Aug. 20th. It probably missed. The CME did hit NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft. The geometry of the STEREO-A impact suggests that the storm cloud sailed wide of our planet. Maybe next time!
Perhaps the two earthquakes on the 19th were related to this and that it wasn't a miss after all. I don't know how big a window there is for such events, but thought to just mention it. There was again another M6.9 in Indonesia on the 21st, so again close to the expected arrival time of the CME.

Ditrianum updated his prediction and 'expects' some more activity towards the end of August:

earthquake forecast
updated 21 August 2020, 6:12 UTC

Due to multiple alignments from the 22nd to the 25th, the last week of August is likely to be critical with seismic activity potentially reaching 7 to 8 magnitude or larger.
Something to keep an eye on.

Last week saw less activity worldwide in terms of numbers, with the biggest being a 6.0 in Tanzania, but that earthquake as well as the 5.4 in North Carolina were interesting as they don't occur very often in those places.
In the usual map area, there were 7 out of 84 earthquakes equal or greater to 4.5 and 2388 out of 2735 earthquakes worldwide of all sizes.
Percentage: 87.3%
This week saw 5 M6 earthquakes: 2 M6.9 & 1 M6.8 in Indonesia, 1 M6.6 in the Philippines and a 6.0 in Georgetown)
In the greater North America area, there were 7 out 80 equal or greater to 4.5 and 2341 out of 2693 worldwide of all sizes.
Percentage: 86.9%

A reasonably reliable source from FB shared some images claiming to be of earthquake lights that ocurred just before the large quakes in the Philippines recently, has anybody else comes across any further info or evidence?

Since i can't seem to embed the FB post, the pics and info are in the quote below; included is what looks to be like official news coverage of the photographer's pictures, the photos also appear to have been shared by numerous official news sites on their social media channels. Two days later the same photographer also claims to have taken a photo of a 'light pillar' but he's attributing that to ice crystrals:

EarthQuake Lights #EQL

- Phenomena such as sheet lightning, balls of light, streamers, and steady glows, reported in association with earthquakes
#Philippine August18 2020

This Luminescent pillar lights sparkling in the the skies of Barangay Dao, Balud, #Masbate were photographed by local resident on Monday night, hours before the tragic #M6.6 earthquake hit Cataingan, Masbate on Tuesday morning.
#EarthQuakeLights #EQL is a luminous aerial phenomenon that reportedly appears in the sky at or near areas of tectonic stress, seismic activity, or volcanic eruptions.

One hypothesis involves intense electric fields created piezoelectrically by tectonic movements of rocks containing quartz.
Another possible explanation is local disruption of the Earth's magnetic field and/or ionosphere in the region of tectonic stress, resulting in the observed glow effects either from ionospheric radiative recombination at lower altitudes and greater atmospheric pressure or as aurora.

However, the effect is clearly not pronounced or notably observed at all earthquake events and is yet to be directly experimentally verified.

What also happened in this little time window was 4 asteroids passing the Earth closer than one lunar distance. They were:

Near Earth asteroids on the 23rd of August 2020.gif

So to recap:
2 M6.9 & 1 M6.8 in Indonesia on the 18 along with a M6.6 in the Philippines also on the 18th. Then a M6.9 on the 21st. An asteroid on the 18th, 2 on the 20th and 1 on the 21st. Adding to this the CME from the sun on the 16th with a 'non arrival' expected on the 20th.

Add to that multiple waterspouts, hurricanes, volcanoes in the same time window and it is clear that there was a lot of electrical activity in and around Earth-Sol environment.

From The Taiwan Times:

Do Mystery Odors In Japan Predict An Upcoming Earthquake?
Kanagawa Prefecture, site of Japan's second largest city, Yokohama, and home to 9.2 million people has recently seen numerous reports of unexplained strange smells permeating the air in a coastal region sitting above the epicenter of the devastating 1923 Greart Kanto Earthquake.

And worryingly, at least one prominent seismologist indicates this could be a precursor of another earthquake.

Most recently reported early Friday, the gas-like smell was reported to the local Yokosuka Fire Department multiple times over the course of an hour, although nobody was eventually taken sick because of the smell.

Just a month earlier, on July 17th the same thing happened with calls from the across the Miura peninsula to authorities complaining about the exact same thing, and six weeks prior to that the same again.

Yet no known cause has been detected
.

However, Japanese seismologist Manabu Takahashi from Ritsumeikan University now fears that the smells could predate a quake in the area; something he has long studied according to reports from Japan.

The site the smells have been detected at sit near the meeting point of the Nankai, Sagami, and Suruga trough fault lines and too close to comfort to the 1923 quake epicenter that left around 140,000 dead across the wider Kanagawa and Kanto plains.

More recently, although not in Japan links between smells that could not be explained at the time, and subsequent earthquakes have occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand a decade ago, and 15 years prior to that in the Kobe area of western Japan prior to the Hanshin Earthquake that left thousands dead.

Smells before both described as comparable to sulphur and egg-like, or even burning rubber were noted and only after each tremor linked to the chain of events leading up to the movement of the earth's plates.

What are the Odds?

2011 ES4 (also written 2011 ES4) is an Apollo near-Earth asteroid roughly 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. It was discovered on 2 March 2011 when the asteroid was about 0.054 AU (8,100,000 km; 5,000,000 mi) from Earth and had a solar elongation of 159 degrees. It passed closest approach to Earth on 13 March 2011.[2] The asteroid has a short observation arc of 4 days and has not been observed since March 2011. The asteroid is expected to pass within 1 lunar distance of Earth in early September 2020.

The distance will be 0.3 Lunar distance according to Spaceweather:

The earthquake which c.a is referring to happened on the 11th of March, two days before the close approach of this asteroid. I am not convinced that there was a connection between that particular asteroid and the Japanese earthquake. Using the archive function on Spaceweather, it is clear that other things happened around that time which might have had more of a bearing on that particular earthquake, though that too is speculative. One of these things was a more active sun and an X-flare on the 9th of March 2011:
Spaceweather archive from 11th of March 2011.gif
Another thing at that time was two asteroids on the 7th of March 2011 passing by Earth, both less than 1 LD.

Last week there was an increase in earthquake activity and the USGS noted 8 M6 quakes with the highest being a M6.8 in Chile. Of the other 7, there were 1 M6.6 and 2 M6.5. It was also the week with planetary alignments, full moon and close fly-by of an asteroid. This is what Ditrianum had to say on the 29th of August about the alignments and the possibility for earthquakes:

earthquake forecast
updated 29 August 2020, 21:41 UTC

On the 30th Earth lined up with Mercury and Neptune, which could trigger seismic activity well over 6 magnitude around the 31st. From 2 to 4 September a near convergence of three alignments in combination with a Full Moon could trigger larger seismic activity from the 2nd to the 6th, potentially reaching magnitude 7 and in a worst-case scenario magnitude 8. Conjunctions with Jupiter and Saturn are going to play a major role in the coming months.

In the usual area there was little large activity with just 1 of 112 earthquakes worldwide equal or greater than 4.5. There were 1955 out of 2348 earthquakes worldwide of all sizes.
Percentage: 83.3%
