Earthquakes around the world

Very busy day

During the past 24 hours, there were 1 quake of magnitude 6.3, 6 quakes between 5.0 and 6.0, 38 quakes between 4.0 and 5.0, 138 quakes between 3.0 and 4.0, and 262 quakes between 2.0 and 3.0. There were also 457 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel.

EARTHQUAKE IN GREECE update

There have been no immediate reports of damage, but emergency services are checking buildings on the eastern side of the island.

Video footage showed products falling from shop shelves and people fleeing buildings. Schools in the area have been closed.

Explaining the tsunami warning, Vassilis Karastathis, deputy director of the Geodynamic Institute, said: “There is always an announcement when there is a strong earthquake in the sea.

With a tsunami we don’t have time to wait until we see all the data from the warning systems, so we sending out the announcement for good or for bad.”

From the Rising fluxes... thread about the flare/CME on Oct. 9th
The proton flux is also slightly elevated. IIRC there was a study linking elevated proton flux to earthquakes.
I think it was 'proton density' actually, and I don't know how flux would translate to that (i guess speed and/or densitiy contribute to flux). Anyway for the record, proton-something was up:
Screenshot_2021-10-13_11-01-00.png

And according to Current Global Seismic Activity Level (GSAL) earthquakes were also up a little in the last 4 days:

The proton flux doesn't change often, so I usually don't pay attention to it very much. Maybe it had to do with the CME being very earth-directed that it was elevated this time, but I don't really know.

During the past 24 hours, there were 3 quakes of magnitude 5.0 or above, 36 quakes between 4.0 and 5.0, 146 quakes between 3.0 and 4.0, and 269 quakes between 2.0 and 3.0. There were also 395 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel.

In addition to the swarm you reported there has been a M4.5 quake in the Pyrenees along the border between Spain and France (near Andorra). It's a benign quake but knowing that strongest recorded earthquake in the Pyrenees was a M5.3 (1967), I thought it was worth mentioning.

The earth shakes - again and stronger - under the volcano Cumbre Vieja, La Palma:

More than 60 earthquakes have been registered on the island of La Palma since midnight last night, one of them of intensity 4.5, in Mazo, at 2:27 a.m., the highest magnitude felt so far since the eruption of the volcano began 26 days ago.

During the past 24 hours, there were 2 quakes of magnitude 5.0 or above, 31 quakes between 4.0 and 5.0, 127 quakes between 3.0 and 4.0, and 291 quakes between 2.0 and 3.0. There were also 432 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel.

I began to wonder how far from an epicenter a quake could be felt. According to the following answer found on Quora, it all depends:

This question is not as simple as one might think. Defining the attribute of interest is the first problem (are you interested in maximum ground offset, wave energy, or only damage to structures?).
But even with a good definition (say, where is the maximum ground offset half of that at the epicenter?), the question cannot be answered in a generic fashion. Waves propogate (sic) differently in different materials. The geometry of the boundaries between different materials is also important. The more homogenous the rocks, the better the waves propogate (sic), and the more heterogenous (sic) the rocks, the more the waves are attenuated. For example, a magnitude 7 earthquake on the New Madrid fault system could probably be felt along the entire eastern seaboard, but a magnitude 7 in the San Francisco area will not be felt in LA. There are also secondary effects, such as liquifaction and the tendency of sedimentary basins to amplify shaking.
In summary, the reason geologists do not already speak in terms of a spatial half-life for a given size of earthquake, is that the earth is too complicated for such a quantity to be defined.

The question wasn't entirely theoretical. Once I was just short of 500 km from the epicenter of a 7.0M but slept through the tremblings that allegedly reached about 4-5 in the area.

The USGS has publishes shakemaps depicting the epicenter and how far and how strong the shaking of the ground was felt.
M 6.4 - 0 km SSE of Palekastro, Greece 2021-10-12 09:24:03 UTC gives this map where there is much less action after 50 km.

There is also an archive where some of the older quakes also have a map. Since the magnitude of a quake logarithmic

Above they mention intensity, which is seismic intensity, but there are different intensity scales. In the US, where the USGS works, they use the Modified Mercalli Scale. Below there are links from the Wiki to the different scales.

The seismic magnitude scales can also vary slightly, but the Wiki explains:
Magnitude scales vary on what aspect of the seismic waves are measured and how they are measured. Different magnitude scales are necessary because of differences in earthquakes, the information available, and the purposes for which the magnitudes are used.

A shakemap is static, it does not reveal the variations. To have an impression of what they may look like there are a few simulations, like in these two:

Simulation of the 2001 M6.8 Nisqually, Washington Earthquake The energy of an earthquake moves in the earth like a wave.[/QUOTE]
