When I went downstairs this morning I noticed through the front window at the top of the stairwell, a bunch of cars parked along the road at the front of our house, and people walking around and clustering at the right angled ditch that is at the corner of our property. A ditch runs along the road, and then another one is cut between our property and the kiwi field next door and runs right alongside our drive. It appeared that a car was in this "between" ditch. I couldn't figure out how that could happen because you would have to make a right turn off the road to get there and you would have to cross the big ditch along the road to do that.
I got downstairs and was informed by the others in the house who were already up that it was very bad: yes, there was a car in that ditch, and there was also a dead man in the ditch next to the car and pieces of the car and stuff all over the place for about 200 yards or so.
Next thing we know, the rescue people are fanning out appearing to look for something and came into our yard, looking all over the place, including up in the trees. It seems that there was a baby car-seat that had been thrown out of the car across the road and they were now looking for a baby.
Geezus!
More time passed, things developed, turned out that the baby was not in the car which relieved everyone. It was bad enough for a young man to be lying out there dead for a couple hours until they finally got the investigation completed and took him and the car away.
In any event, it seems that the accident happened about 1:10 am because 3 or 4 people in the house here heard something at that time but couldn't figure out what it was. The car must have been going very fast because he went airborn over some of the kiwis, just taking the tops off of them, and then slammed into the ditch next to our driveway and the power pole. The pole wasn't structurally damaged, though a big hole was torn in our chain-link fence. Where, when, and how the guy got out we can't figure. The doctor came and estimated the time of death at about 7 am which, if that is true, is horrible. It means the guy was still alive after the accident and laid there in the ditch dying for about 6 hours. On the other hand, that was just a rough estimate given at the scene when he (the doctor) didn't yet know that anyone had heard anything or what time.
There was another accident in about the same place back in 2011, on September 18th, but it was fairly minor and the old gentleman was fine. I keep wondering what it is about that spot? Perhaps a deer crossed the road and the guy swerved to avoid it. We won't know much more until tomorrow, perhaps.
Needless to say, we are all pretty traumatized by this. It's kind of a bummer of a start to February.
