There's another thread about this crop circle-like thing here:

The threads have been merged.

Here's an exchange I had with the guy who wrote the article in UFO magazine in 91. FWIW

Read from bottom:

There was never any question at the time, or during the next dozen years or more, that it hadn't been there. A pilot had spotted it, there were a coup[le aerial photos of it, which made the newspapers, a couple of my friends drove out there and saw it before it was too cordoned off, and came back mentioning how hard and firm the dry-lake ground was in which the symbol was entrenched.
Jim.

Thanks Jim, were you able to confirm that the symbol was actually there by any other means? I'm just trying to establish that the symbol was actually there because some people have suggested that it could have been a fake story.

Thanks Jim. Did you get a chance to visit the symbol yourself?

Joe

Yes, Joe, that's me. The guilty ones, Witherspoon et al., who claimed credfit for having made the Sri Yantra, and who made a video of pretending to have made it, have continued to get away with it. About a year after the article came out, more information came in, of a strange-cloud (UFO) sighting over the edge of the dry'lake bed that occurred at night around the 4th of July 1990 by some sail-plane enthusiasts who were camped out there. This was likely responsible for having made it.

To send emails I must now use this other one -- outlook.com.

Hi, I'm writing to ask you for confirmation that you wrote a report in UFO Magazine, volume 6 #3, 1991 entitled "A Symbol on the Oregon Desert".

Thanks for your time

Here`s another odd one. Don`t have any info on this other than it`s in the middle of nowhere in Idaho.

I believe this is the geoglyph the creator of the first video was referring to:

It is apparently known as "The Maree Man", and is visible from space. Whether it was created by aliens (as suggested by the Youtube guy), or by an artist (the leading theory) is unknown, but in this case I wouldn't be too surprised by the latter hypothesis:

We need to know what newspapers and can we get copies of them from a library archive.

These newspaper links to the 1990 story may be of help.

Interesting. Neither of them have "aerial photos" and one of them is about Deardorff.

The first one - the Bulletin - has a more detailed story in section B that gives names of the guy who saw it, his squadron etc, the photo analyst whose wife "identified" it from her "Time-Life" books on the occult, another guy who went out to the site and found surveying stakes at some of the corners with pink ribbons tied to them. A ranch hand said he had spotted three men out there, one of them pulling a plow some weeks before the discovery. This was before anybody came along to "claim" the credit.

A "Burns Times-Herald" is mentioned as the rag of the town closest to the critter and that everyone in that town was busy discussing it and saying it was related to "cult activity." I took a snapshot of the article off google.

So this might be the archive to check:

I found this.
It's not much, but it's kinda square and where the article that Google had said it would be.

Thanks for the info Ellfman.

Welcome to the forum. :) We recommend all new members to post an introduction in the Newbies section telling us a bit about themselves, and how they found their way here. Have a read through that section to get an idea of how others have done it. Thanks.

In the comments under the video there's a link to this site: http://changingpower.net/mystery-in-the-alvord-desert/

According to the blog, the group of people drawing the giant Sri Yantra "...didn’t seek publicity but wanted to find out if the ancient symbol would enliven local laws of nature in some perceptible way."

It's interesting also to read what the article has to say about how the group created the Sri Yantra:

"During the arduous weeks of making the Sri Yantra, the group daily walked several miles from camp to the work site rather than use vehicles. Instead of expensive surveying tools, they used sun shadows, ancient prinsiples of geometry, long wires, binoculars, flags and sharpened poles. To inscribe the lines, three crew members pulled the garden cultivator while a fourth steered. They reverently etched a quarter-mile-across Sri Yantra onto forty acres. It contained more than thirteen miles of lines, four inches deep.

As soon as they finished plowing the last line, rain clouds began collecting in the southern sky. An hour later high winds and lightning swept the area. A downpour chose that one valley, drawing envious comment from a nearby rancher who wanted rain. It dissolved footprints and left the design varnished like a completed painting."

The article goes on to describe several other similar projects of Bill Witherspoon, one of the group members, and as far as I can see the story presented in the blog sounds credible.

With regard to crop circles being faked by people with planks in the middle of the night; I used to know someone who said that he and some friends used to do this locally. I live in a rural county in the UK and there are a lot of crops here especially rapeseed so it is entirely possible. This was over 20 years ago and crop circles were the 'in thing' here then. I believed him and it was just the sort of thing he would have done, frankly. IIRC the C's have said that they have made these from time to time to send a message to humanity. I suspect that some crop circles are genuine and some are faked. Also, the popular idea that they are caused by little green men landing their spaceships is very wide of the mark. I think that is a case of people wanting something to be true more than anything else. With regard to that, I saw someone I follow on Twitter post that he hoped that an alien invasion happened soon so that it would unite humanity in a common cause :umm: . I was so tempted to tell him that they have been here for hundreds of thousands of years and that we already lost that battle but as much as he likes to claim he is open-minded I think this would have been a bridge that was far too far from his current world view!
