Aleksandr Dugin: "Trump has every chance of becoming president again"
The Russian philosopher praises the US president and criticises the Democrats. Why he vindicates Perón's ideas and advocates a left-right front.
Aleksandr Dugin says he loves the Argentine people, their culture and traditions. "Argentina is like Europe in the 1950s, a much nicer, healthier and beautiful Europe," he says. His words resonate from Russia, where he is a leading specialist in geopolitics and philosophy. Western media called him "Vladimir Putin's Rasputin" or even "the world's most dangerous philosopher". Dugin created the Fourth Political Theory, which advocates the creation of an anti-globalist front to fight liberal globalism.
Reading Dugin helps to understand how they think in the Kremlin, in the Planalto Palace and in Donald Trump's White House. Speaking to PERFIL, he argues that the Republican will return to power in 2024. "I don't think Trump has in any way lost credibility within the United States. He will be demonised and persecuted, but he has every chance of becoming president again," says the former professor at Moscow State University.
Could you explain what globalism and anti-globalism are and who represents them in today's world?
Globalism represents the essentially unipolar worldview. At the level of geopolitics, it is the definition of the West over the East and other Third World countries. At the level of ideology, globalism represents liberal democracy or left-liberalism, which wants to free the individual from all ties to collective identity. It is absolute individualism that goes beyond religion, nations, ethnicities. The only thing left to the globalists of the left is to deny human identity, to defend the life forms of post-human individuals, artificial intelligence, robots, cyborgs, etc. This is not fantasy, it is a political and ideological reality of globalisation, which is the promotion of the absolute and dominant status of the individual freed from all links to collective identity.
Globalism is the ideology and process in development, it is not static, but dynamic. Politically it is the organisation of the world on the unipolar model. But this pole is no longer Western, American or European.
It is the pole without any relation to the ground, to the earth. That is why it is apolar unipolarity, without a pole. Antiglobalisation is everything that is against it: multipolarity, plurality of economic, cultural and social structures. It is not liberalism, but neither communism nor fascism, which no longer exist in today's world. It is not an established ideology, but it is a form opposed to globalisation. The most important question is to be in favour of globalisation and the "great reset" or to be in favour of the "great awakening".
Thus two more important choices are formulated which affect the very nature of man, which separate mankind into two parts. This conflict that we observe today in the USA is not an American conflict, but a universal one. The same is happening in Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, Argentina, in European and Islamic countries. Everywhere there is the network of the globalists who belong to the elite and there are also the people who are pejoratively called populists. This problem will be solved in the course of this century. To be right-wing or left-wing today means almost nothing.
It is much more important to be for globalism or against it; on the side of the people or on the side of the globalist elite and the dominant financial and technological networks.
Trump was widely criticised for instigating the attack on the Capitol and discrediting the election. Do you think he can come back in 2024 and that the Republican Party has transformed into a populist party?
I think with Trump the Republican Party is already transformed into something else. In the 1980s, with Reagan, it was another form of liberalism, like the Democratic Party. There was a system with a common geopolitics, a synthesis between the Democrats and the Republicans. Trump has destroyed all that because he has returned to the original, isolationist Republicanism, to the pre-Woodrow Wilson vision.
During this election campaign the Democrats have become very radicalised. Today they represent the form of liberal totalitarianism that censors media, cuts off access to Twitter. Trump will not immediately lose all support. Half of the US population believes the election was stolen. Trump has released this resistance, this beginning of the "great awakening", the great awakening. He has opened the doors to the creation of the new pole in the USA, to the resistance to the globalist elites. He will be demonised and persecuted, but I believe he has every chance of becoming president again if America continues to exist.
Because it is very likely that the United States will cease to exist. This separation between two poles of American society is so strong and so deep that nothing ensures that it will exist in four years' time.
How can the US disintegrate, do you think there will be some kind of civil war?
A civil war in the US is very likely. But it is not certain. It could be that the country will last even longer. I have lived in the Soviet Union and I have seen from the inside the moment of its end. In the USA today there are many more reasons and conditions for its total destruction than in the case of the Soviet Union. The democrats are more and more radicalising their positions. They demonise all opponents by calling them fascists or Nazis, they do not want to accept any opposition to their positions, I believe that this will accelerate the end of the USA even more.
John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, argues that if China becomes too powerful, Russia will move closer to the US. How do you analyse this triangular relationship?
The Chinese and the Iranians think that under Biden their relations with the US will improve and those between the US and Russia will worsen. But this expectation, this hope, is totally unfounded. It is naive. US-Russia relations under Trump were very bad. We had no improvement after Obama. Biden has no space, no dimension to make this relationship even worse. All the instruments of pressure against Russia are already used. The only thing left is to start the atomic war against Russia, but Putin's Russia is ready, is ready for that. Putin is concentrating on defence and security. With China and Iran I think that in a few months it will also be clear that no improvement in relations is possible. Biden cannot lose Israel, he cannot get too close to the Iranians. And he cannot accept the spectacular development of Xi Jinping's China. China uses every aspect that benefits it in foreign trade, using liberalism, but always for its own purposes and interests. Biden cannot accept this, he cannot let China continue to grow stronger. And I think Russia will stand with Iran, China, Turkey and all the anti-globalists. Biden will be more and more isolated in the world, like Trump. Trump has declared a revolution in international relations but has been able to do almost nothing. Nor can Biden.
In this global context, what is Russia's role?
There are globalists in Russia. Technological elites, oligarchs, representatives of economic elites, especially administrative elites, are part of these globalist networks. They are in favour of Biden, the democrats, technocrats and left-liberals. But the partnership with Putin forms the anti-globalist pole. Putin reacts against globalist pressures, against the demonisation of Russia and himself. He is a reactionary anti-globalist, unwilling and unable to accept these demands of the globalists in the West. For him sovereignty is the most important value and this is not compatible with globalisation. That is why he is an anti-globalist by compulsion. The Russian population is very conservative, very sovereigntist and very patriotic. That is why they support Putin. Russia should play a very important role in the current situation, ideologically, culturally, politically, militarily, we have all the necessary elements to be the leaders of this anti-globalist struggle, also supporting China, the Islamic world, the struggle for the independence of Latin America and Africa.
Who is part of anti-globalism in Latin America?
Latin America has always been more anti-globalist than globalist. There are many varieties of anti-globalism, there is not just one. There are leftist, traditional, socialist, Guevarist, Liberation Theology, progressive Catholicism. The right was traditionally liberal and pro-globalist. Today the situation is changing. Part of the anti-globalist left is becoming the liberal globalist left and part of the right, the traditionalists, the Latin American identitarians, are becoming anti-globalists. The ideological political landscape in Latin America is therefore changing. I believe that a common front must emerge between the anti-globalist left and right. Because globalism is left-wing and right-wing. And anti-globalism logically also has to be of the left and of the right.
In Argentina the ideas of General Juan Domingo Perón are more suitable to serve as a basis. The Third Position once again gains its reason, its meaning, its depth. This Peronism may be right-wing or left-wing, but it is also anti-globalist. Perón wanted to unify Latin America against the United States in order to assert identity with social justice, which is the value of the left, and tradition, which is the value of the right.
But it is not enough. We have to go further. That is why I have emphasised the Fourth Political Theory, which is anti-liberal, but it is not communist or fascist either. It is a critical position on modern, colonial, modernist and hegemonic politics. It is a form of return to all identities to fight against unifying universalism and liberal individualism. That is why I believe that Latin America could find this general ideological position in the Fourth Political Theory, with Peronism, with some leftist traditions. It is also necessary to overcome a certain materialism, a certain scientism, atheism, and progressivism of the left, to arrive at a new creation of the anti-globalist position, which could unite people on the left without dogmatism, and people on the right without nationalism, racism and capitalism.
