ABBA

Does anyone out there like ABBA ? How about Shania Twain ? Sandy Posey? Conway Twitty? Loretta Lynn? Donna Fargo? Celine Dionne?
Loreena McKinnett?

Oh my. ;D I think I had every one of ABBA's albums released in the US when still a kid. Just watched "Mama Mia" at my Mom's house a few weeks ago and loved it. I still love those songs, happy tunes for the most part. In grade school I sang a few Loretta Lynn tunes. Love Loreena McKinnett. Folk music was a constant in our house growing up, so was Bluegrass, but I don't care for country music. Don't care for Celine Dionne. Never heard much Shania Twain or any Sandy Posey.

My grandmother liked some country music, and I remember seeing Conway Twitty sing and putting my fingers in my ears. Yes, it was the hair. I can listen to his music, just like I can listen to the Rolling Stones....but its not possible if I have to see Mick Jagger. I don't know why, but if the singer is a bit funky looking, I have a hard time listening to the music.

Abba, folk-glam-disco overlords, their slick innocence made quite the backdrop for late 70's rising materialism. Recently I've been suspecting a 3d mind control program behind them. Just a feeling and speculative unfounded junctions such as having the Eurovision winning tune Waterloo, Fridas Nazi father (reunited late in life) and the Lloyd Weber Chess connection but then i found below endearing humanist Björn Ulveås interviev, and now i suppose they are just 4d strung like most, though I am not convinced.

Dancing Queen still takes me to a happy fantasy spot in mind, maybe they were even influenced by benevolant subliminals

Galahad - where are you?

(He hates Abba and we have been known to torture him by forcing him to listen.)

Anyway... yeah, we are ABBA fans here at the Chateau. Abba is great for working out, great for listening to on long research trips, great for cleaning, getting ready for guests, and what have you. We love 'em!

My favorite is "The Winer Takes it All", especially this part:

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain.

Conway Twitty? Yeah, I think he's good and I don't hold his hair against him - I actually think it's great that he has so much of it! (But then, I guess I'm an 80's Hair fan!) Here's a better number: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsZL10oxPwY&feature=related He sure gives it his all!

We all love Dixie Chicks here too, especially their latest album "Taking the Long Way". We also bought the movie about the making of this album: Shut up and Sing. It's a great inspirational little film with some good music going on. Have a look at the video of one of the hits from this platinum album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwc5YSAc-7g Funny that the album debuted at number one and went 5 times platinum, but in Texas, they couldn't tour because the radio stations would not play their songs. That's evidence of the fact that the media is NOT in touch with the people but rather are trying to control them or give the appearance of what is "accepted." Read the story on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Chicks

I LOVE the number "I Hope" on that Album. SOTT published a music flash with this song as the theme:
http://www.sott.net/articles/show/126990-I-Hope-A-Dixie-Chicks-and-SOTT-Special-Presentation I love the bluesy guitar licks going on in this one!

The number "Everybody Knows" on that album deserves to be a classic. It's just perfect.

I don't think Shania Twain has as much "bottom" as the Chicks.

Loved the video from The Dixie Chicks "Not Ready to Make Nice"
The symbolism for me was very profound. The black & white, the writing on the black board stating
"To speak without thinking is to shoot without aiming", the authority figures (like judges) were in black and the doctors were in white. Maybe the song is in response to this:

from Wikipedia
During a London concert ten days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Maines said, "we don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas" (the Dixie Chicks' home state).[2] The statement offended people who thought it rude and unpatriotic, and the ensuing controversy cost the group half of their concert audience attendance in the United States and led to accusations of the three women being un-American, as well as hate mail, a death threat, and the destruction of their albums in protest.[3]

I admired her and the group for standing up to the Bush administration, when not many others were. They went on to win 13 grammy awards for their music. Loved their version of Stevie Nicks "Landslide"

Thanks for posting the youtube video link.

Love Lorena McKinnet, but I played her albums so much that I played them out. As I get older my music taste changes and I find so much new music unappealing. Especially pop music in the states. Radio stations play the same thing over and over again. But when I hear an old favorite I can not help but turn up the sound and dance.

Abba's music is so melodic and the harmonies are great. My all time favorite group is U2, love Bono's lyrics. Peter Gabrial, Sara Brightman her voice is amazing, Delirium. And I just love Bobby Darin. Many music genres is in my collection.

I grew up on ABBA and inspired us(me and my friends) to study English besides of course The Beatles.
Favorite groups:
1. Beatles
2. ABBA
3. Boney M

ABBA was always great on orchestration and melody.

I've been outed! :O

I can enjoy listening to ABBA, but an hour later I need to listen to the Rolling Stones, Dylan, or The Clash.

Thanks for starting this thread tom32071. I like Abba too and one of my favourites is "The Visitors". It's so different from the rest of their songs. When I was growing up, I was more into Cream, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Beatles, etc. These days into a lot quieter sounds. Mostly orchestra compositions like Howard Shore, Mozart, Strauss, Debussy, etc. :)

Yes, ABBA did make some catchy little ditties. But as far as catchy songs with great harmonies the BEE GEES trumps them all!

One of my favorite groups of all time.

Wow !!

I never expected that to get so many responses.

I like all of the ones that I mentioned, some more than others.

Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, while really good on their own did some really great duets and I really can't think of one without thinking of the other.

Shania doesn't have a great voice but she has(had?) a really good sound.

Loreena McKinnett took a poem that I really liked in high school and made it into a song. The Highwayman.

I actually like a wide variety of music. My sister used to drive me crazy with classical music and eventually I actually got to where I like some of it. I've even heard some rap that I like.

Neil Diamond, great
Rod Stewart , great
Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, great duets
Kid Rock, great
Meatloaf, great
Heart, great

Hope you all enjoyed this. I did. Thanks.

We listen to quite a bit of country music. Back in June we had to travel to Marseille to be with a friend having surgery. We don't have an MP3 player in the van but we do have a transmitter that transmits from the little ones to the radio if you can find a blank station. Well, about half way the airwaves were so crowded we were stuck without music. We stopped at a store on the motorway and there was a 4 CD country music album for like 10 euros. I snagged it and we plugged them into the changer. What a hoot! There was Dolly Parton as a teenager singing "It wasn't God who made Honky Tonk Women" and Kitty Wells doing "Ah Kain't Stop Lovin' You!" Every time she pronounced "kain't" I cracked up!

Abba, yes! I love them, I grew up to their songs and it's one of those things, you just keep listening...

Bee Gees are on my tops of tops! I LOVE them, could listen to them aaaall day long. Great for house cleaning and similar things, really lifts up my energy! Its cleaning and dancing, dancing and cleaning...

This was a surprising thread -- I mean how everyone got right into it!!

We never had all that very much pop music around the house when growing up, but an Abba cassette did somehow appear in the 70's when I was still a kid. So whenever I hear one of their songs, it brings me pretty fast to some pretty good and carefree Canadian childhood memories! I never would have thought that I would one day live in Scandinavia myself as an adult! (Abba was from Sweden, while I live in Finland these days).

By the way, although I was following closely what was going on with the Iraq war and I knew how the Dixie Chicks made a stand against it, opening up some of the URLs that Laura posted was the very first time I heard any of their music. Imagine that eh?

The thing I have noticed about ABBA is that most people of my generation profess to hate them and love to roll their eyes when the name is mentioned, but go to a party where somebody puts some ABBA on and everybody is jigging away to the tune and singing along with the songs. Very catchy, very melodic. Boney M are in the same category for me, people claim to hate them but always sing along when the songs come on.

I must admit I have a "Best of" selection of Boney M and also of ABBA, as tI find they are great to lift my spirits - but only in smallish doses. Then I go back to a healthy serving of Jethro Tull ..........

Dolly was at her best when she was younger! She totally rocked.

Merle Haggard is another great country artist... and then there is Patsy Cline!
