ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Authorities say a flight operated by Air Algerie carrying 110 passengers and a crew of six has disappeared from the radar on a flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers.

The official Algerian news agency said air navigation services lost track of the Swiftair plane 50 minutes after takeoff — at 0155 GMT. Flight AH5017 had been missing for hours before news was made public.

Swiftair, the private Spanish airline, confirmed that 116 people were aboard.

An Air Algerie flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers has disappeared from radar on a flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers, the official Algerian news agency said Thursday.

Air navigation services lost track of the plane 50 minutes after takeoff early Thursday, last sited at 0155 GMT, the agency said.

"In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," the agency quoted the airline as saying.

The flight path of Flight AH5017 from Ouagadougou, the capital of the west African nation of Burkina Faso, to Algiers was not immediately clear.

ALGIERS - Air Algerie said Thursday it had lost contact with one of its passenger aircraft nearly an hour after takeoff from Burkina Faso bound for Algiers.

A company source told AFP that the missing aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and that some 110 people of various nationalities are listed as being on board the flight.

The source said contact with the aircraft was lost while it was still in Malian airspace approaching the border with Algeria.

Despite international military intervention still under way, the situation remains unstable in northern Mali, which was seized by jihadist groups for several months in 2012.

On July 17, the Bamako government and armed groups from northern Mali launched tough talks in Algiers aimed at securing an elusive peace deal, and with parts of the country still mired in conflict.

"The plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route," the Air Algerie source said.

"Contact was lost after the change of course."

The airline announced that the plane had gone missing in a brief statement carried by national news agency APS.

"Air navigation services have lost contact with an Air Algerie plane Thursday flying from Ouagadougou to Algiers, 50 minutes after takeoff," the statement said.

It added that the company initiated an "emergency plan" in the search for flight AH5017, which flies the four-hour passenger route four times a week.

One of Algeria's worst air disasters occurred in February this year, when a C-130 military aircraft carrying 78 people crashed in poor weather in the mountainous northeast, killing more than 70 people.

The plane was flying from the desert garrison town of Tamanrasset in Algeria's deep south to Constantine, 320 kilometres (200 miles) east of Algiers.

Tamanrasset was the site of the country's worst ever civilian air disaster, in March 2003.

In that accident, all but one of 103 people on board were killed when an Air Algerie passenger plane crashed on takeoff after one of its engines caught fire.

The sole survivor, a young Algerian soldier, was critically injured.

In December 2012, two Algerian military jets on a routine training mission collided in mid-air near Tlemcen in the northwest, killing both pilots.

A month earlier, a twin-turboprop CASA C-295 military transport aircraft, which was carrying a cargo of paper for the printing of banknotes in Algeria, crashed in southern France.

The five soldiers and one central bank representative on board were all killed.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Missing: Breaking News!

Breaking news that most people aboard this flight were French. In the last few days it seems France has had a lot of sway over the persecution of Russia by most of Europe & America & if it wasn't for France I dread to think! Anyway, I think this is some kind of payback.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Missing: Breaking News!

RT is reporting that it has 'crashed'

Air Algerie AH5017 crashes in Niger with 110 passengers and 6 crew - reports

An Air Algerie flight carrying 110 passengers and six crew members disappeared from radar early on Thursday morning between Burkina Faso and Algeria. CCTV and Algerian Ennahar TV report it went down in Niger.

French Transport Minister, Frederic Cuvillier, told reporters that it was “likely many” French passengers were on board the flight.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Missing: Breaking News!

So they lost contact with the plane. Does this mean that it disappeared from the radar or did it happen in an area with no coverage?

ADD: I also wonder if the flight changed route before going into the bad weather area or not

I'd say their rabidly pro-Israel stance would be more to blame in that sense.

Yeah, it depends on what the source of the "disappearance" is.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Missing: Breaking News!

Just a little note, Algeria is another country -like Malaysia- which haven't recognized Israel yet.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Missing: Breaking News!

Yes, was just going to mention Israel. After MH17 went down I was disgusted at UK media disinfo overdrive. It seemed they had everyone against Russia. After not watching the news for few days (it was just making me angry) I tuned in to see a massive turnaround in attitude towards Russian rebels in Ukraine & even sympathy for their plight. This happened after some straight talking from France who stopped further sanctions against Russia. Also France making most noise about Gaza.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Missing: Breaking News!

Maybe some of the Muslim militants in Mali or around there decided to do a copycat of the Malaysian flight 17?

Given that we ruled out the possibility of the East Ukrainian separatist hitting the MH17 due to a lack of weaponry and know-how, I doubt that a group of Malian militants would have been capable of accomplishing a similar feat.

I am however curious about the storm that's been taking place in the area. After the recent findings from the crew about the electrical nature of storms and the links with hyper-dimensional phenomena, I wouldn't immediately rule out the possibility of it being another MH370 type event until more information comes out.
