North Korea puts tearful detained American before cameras

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea presented a detained American student before the media on Monday in Pyongyang, where he tearfully apologized for attempting to steal a political banner — at the behest, he said, of a member of a church back home who wanted it as a "trophy" — from a staff-only section of the hotel where he had been staying.

February 29, 2016 - North Korea announced in late January it had arrested Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate student. It said that after entering the country as a tourist he committed an anti-state crime with "the tacit connivance of the U.S. government and under its manipulation."

No details of what kind of charges or punishment Warmbier faces were immediately released. According to Warmbier's statement Monday, he wanted the banner with a political slogan on it as a trophy for the church member, who was the mother of a friend.

In previous cases, people who have been detained in North Korea and made a public confession often recant those statements after their release. He was arrested while visiting the country with Young Pioneer Tours, an agency specializing in travel to North Korea, which is strongly discouraged by the U.S. State Department. He had been staying at the Yanggakdo International Hotel, which is located on an island in a river that runs through Pyongyang, the capital.

It is common for sections of tourist hotels to be reserved for North Korean staff and off-limits to foreigners. Warmbier is a native of Ohio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, while campaigning in New Hampshire as a Republican presidential candidate, called the arrest "inexcusable." Kasich has urged President Barack Obama to "make every effort to secure Mr. Warmbier's immediate release and keep (his) family constantly apprised."

Kasich said North Korea should either provide evidence of the alleged anti-state activities or release Warmbier. In his comments, Warmbier said he was offered a used car worth $10,000 by a member of the church. He said the church member told him the slogan would be hung on its wall as a trophy. He also said he was told that if he was detained and didn't return, $200,000 would be paid to his mother in the form of a charitable donation.

Warmbier identified the church as the Friendship United Methodist Church, which is in his hometown, Wyoming, Ohio. Meshach Kanyion, pastor of the church, would not confirm whether he knows Warmbier or if he is a member of the church.

"I don't have any comment at this time," he told The Associated Press. Warmbier said he was also encouraged in his act by the "Z Society" at the University of Virginia, which he said he was trying to join. The magazine of the university's alumni association describes the Z Society as a "semi-secret ring society" that was founded in 1892 and conducts philanthropy, puts on honorary dinners and grants academic awards.

Warmbier said he accepted the offer of money because his family is "suffering from very severe financial difficulties." "I started to consider this as my only golden opportunity to earn money," he said, adding that if he ever mentioned the involvement of the church, "no payments would come."

North Korea regularly accuses Washington and Seoul of sending spies to overthrow its government to enable the U.S.-backed South Korean government to control the Korean Peninsula. U.S. tourism to North Korea is legal and virtually all Americans who make the journey return home without incident.

Even so, the State Department has repeatedly warned against travel to the North. Visitors, especially those from America, who break the country's sometimes murky rules risk detention, arrest and possible jail sentences.

Young Pioneer describes itself on its website as providing "budget tours to destinations your mother would rather you stayed away from." The agency, based in China, also has tours to Iran, Cuba, Turkmenistan, Iraq and other former Soviet countries.

After Warmbier's detention, it stressed in a news release that he was the first of the 7,000 people it has taken to North Korea over the past eight years to face arrest. "Despite what you may hear, North Korea is probably one of the safest places on Earth to visit," it says on its website.

In the past, North Korea has held out until senior U.S. officials or statesmen came to personally bail out detainees, all the way up to former President Bill Clinton, whose visit in 2009 secured the freedom of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling. Both had crossed North Korea's border from China illegally.

It took a visit in November 2014 by U.S. spy chief James Clapper to bring home Matthew Miller, who had ripped up his visa when entering the country, and Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae, who had been incarcerated since November 2012.

Jeffrey Fowle, another U.S. tourist from Ohio detained for six months at about the same time as Miller, was released just before that and sent home on a U.S. government plane. He left a Bible in a local club hoping a North Korean would find it, which is considered a criminal offense in North Korea.

US student held in North Korea, little information released

January 22, 2016 - Otto Warmbier is the second person from southwest Ohio to be detained in North Korea in less than two years. A Dayton-area man, Jeffrey Fowle, was held for nearly six months in 2014. North Korea's state media said the University of Virginia student entered the country under the guise of a tourist and plotted against North Korean unity with "the tacit connivance of the U.S. government and under its manipulation." The date of his arrest was unclear, as were any details of what he did.

The U.S. Department of State said it was "aware of media reports that a U.S. citizen was detained in North Korea." A China-based tour company specializing in travel to North Korea, Young Pioneer Tours, confirmed that one of its customers, identified only as Otto, had been detained in Pyongyang, the North's capital, but provided no other details.

Social media accounts for Warmbier show interests in finance, travel and rap music. Warmbier is majoring in economics with a minor in global sustainability and was on the dean's list. A professor at the university's school of commerce, Jeremy Marcel, called Warmbier "a very intelligent, wonderful young man." A Theta Chi fraternity brother, Miles Kirwin, added, "He's an incredible guy."

It's a very tragic situation and the circumstances of him going to NK in the first place are very murky? I keep getting the feeling, there is a lot more involved than what has been given to the media. We may never get the details of what really happened to Otto Warmbier?

Today we received with deep sadness the news that Otto Warmbier has passed away.

On Otto Warmbier

On behalf of the entire State Department and the United States government, I extend my condolences to the Warmbier family, and offer my prayers as they enter a time of grief no parent should ever know.

We hold North Korea accountable for Otto Warmbier’s unjust imprisonment, and demand the release of three other Americans who have been illegally detained.

CINCINNATI -- Otto Warmbier has died, University of Cincinnati Medical Center announced Monday.

Otto Warmbier has died days after release from North Korea, hospital says
http://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/hamilton-county/cincinnati/otto-warmbier-has-died-hospital-says

In a statement released by the hospital, family members said Warmbier had been unable to speak, see or react to verbal commands since his return to Cincinnati June 13.

"He looked very uncomfortable -- almost anguished," family members said. "Although we would never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed -- he was at peace. He was home and we believe he could sense that."

Earlier, doctors treating Warmbier had said he suffered "severe neurological injury" and that he was in a state of "unresponsive wakefulness." North Korean officials had claimed Warmbier contracted botulism and never woke up after taking a sleeping pill. Doctors in Cincinnati said he showed no signs of botulism when he arrived here last week, though they couldn't say exactly what caused the cardiac or respiratory arrest that led to his unresponsive condition.

After the death of American student Otto Warmbier following injuries he suffered during his detainment by North Korean authorities, the tour group that brought him into the DPRK has announced that they will not be taking any more Americans into the “Hermit Kingdom”.

Young Pioneer Tours, a Chinese company that specializes in budget tours of North Korea, sent an email to USA Today claiming that the risk "for Americans visiting North Korea has become too high." As a result, they can no longer offer tours to Americans.

The devastating loss of Otto Warmbier's life has led us to reconsider our position on accepting American tourists," the email read. "There had not been any previous detainment in North Korea that has ended with such tragic finality and we have been struggling to process the result."

Warmbier was held for 17 months in North Korea after being accused of trying to steal a political poster and sentenced to 15 years hard labor. At some point during his captivity, he fell into a coma. North Korean authorities attributed his condition to a case of botulism and a sleeping pill, while American doctors said they found no traces of botulism - but they did find that Warmbier's brain had been damaged by oxygen deprivation.

Warmbier was returned to the United States in June, but six days after returning he passed away.

The tour group called Warmbier's incident "appalling". They claimed that they reached out to North Korean authorities and requested to speak with Warmbier during his detention, but were denied.

"Despite constant requests, we were denied any opportunity to meet him or anyone in contact with him in Pyongyang, only receiving assurances that he was fine," they said. "There has still been almost no information disclosed about his period in detention. Considering these facts and this tragic outcome we will no longer be organizing tours for U.S. citizens to North Korea."

[...] US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has suggested that he may issue a travel visa restriction on Americans who wish to go to North Korea, while Congressmen are murmuring about a possible travel ban.

When Otto was first detained by the Communist regime, multiple outlets mocked his arrest and impending doom.

An autopsy will not be performed on Otto Warmbier's body, after a coroner granted his family's request not to do so. (Photos - Video)

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office released a statement Tuesday after conferring with doctors at the Cincinnati hospital where the 22-year-old student died just days after he was returned from North Korea.

Warmbier had been held captive in the country for 17 months.

Coroner Dr Lakshmi Sammarco said in the statement the student's family stated it did not want an autopsy to be completed after an external examination.

'No conclusions about the cause and manner of Mr Warmbier's death have been drawn at this time as there are additional medical records and imaging to review and people to interview.'

There was no immediate word from the family about why relatives opted not to perform an autopsy, which may have shed more light on the cause of the neurological injuries Warmbier suffered in North Korea.

For a few days we have been perplexed by the story of Otto Warmbier and his tragic death.

Was Otto Warmbier an American Student or an Israeli Spy?
http://www.gilad.co.uk/writings/2017/6/22/was-otto-warmbier-an-american-student-or-an-israeli-spy

Warmbier, 22, was traveling on a tour of North Korea last year when he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for stealing a propaganda poster. Following international outrage, North Korea agreed to release him admitting that he had suffered a severe neurological injury. Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center reported that Warmbier was unresponsive and has suffered extensive brain damage.

Today, pretty much, out of the blue, the Jewish press announced that Warmbier was a Jewish boy, active with Hillel at the University of Virginia. In addition, Warmbier visited Israel at least once.

In 2014, Warmbier went on a Birthright mission to Israel, where he received a Hebrew name. Following the trip, he became involved with Hillel and the Jewish community on campus.

Rabbi Jake Rubin described Warmbier as “a beloved member of our Hillel community.”

“He was a regular at Bagels on Lawn, celebrated Shabbat and holidays at Hillel, and even led a seder for other students that focused on issues of environmentalism and sustainability,” Rabbi Rubin wrote.

And now the six million dollar question. Was Warmbier an Israeli spy? Who knows, but it is likely that someone in North Korea thought he was.

We know that Israel and North Korea are extremely hostile towards each other. North Korea has never recognised the Jewish State and in 1988 it recognised the State of Palestine as including all of Israel. Israel often accuses North Korea of trading arms with Hamas and Syria.

Peculiarly, not a single MSM outlet has referred to Warmbier's ties with Israel. Until his last hours, Israel and the Jewish community kept silent about Warmbier’s Jewish identity, his Zionist affiliation and his visit to Israel. Maybe this silence is more revealing than anything else.

In an interview on Fox & Friends on Tuesday, Fred Warmbier said that when his son was released and returned to the U.S. in a medically-induced coma in June, it 'looked like someone had taken a pair of pliers and rearranged' his bottom teeth.

But the Hamilton County Coroner's report, obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer on Tuesday, found Otto's teeth were in 'natural and in good repair' when he died six days after returning to the U.S.

The coroner found a collection of 10 scars on Otto's 'well-developed, well-nourished' body, but nothing serious enough to indicate he was tortured.

At least half of them were faded, indicating that they were older. The newer scars could have been caused by medical treatment - like one on the side of his neck that could have been the result of an intravenous line.

There was also one at the top of his sternum which looked like a 'tracheotomy scar' caused by inserting a breathing tube.

The coroner listed Otto's cause of death as brain damage from lack of oxygen 'due to an unknown insult more than a year prior to death' - insult meaning injury.

The exact cause of that injury is unknown because the coroner was not allowed to perform a full autopsy by Otto's parents.

Otto was a 21-year-old University of Virginia student in January 2016 when he visited North Korea with a tour group based in China.

He was detained in the country after being accused of stealing a propaganda poster from his Pyongyang hotel.

In March 2016, Otto was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor, and wasn't heard from again for 15 months.

In June, the North Koreans decided to release Otto back to the U.S. - revealing that he had fallen into a coma shortly after his trial more than a year before.

The North Koreans maintain that Otto fell into a coma after getting botulism and taking a sleeping pill.

When he was returned to the U.S., doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said he showed no signs of broken bones or other trauma but that he had severe and extensive brain damage. They also said he showed no signs of botulism, though the toxin that causes the illness can't stay in the body for more than a year. He died six days later.

In their interview on Tuesday, Warmbier's parents said he was in a horrific state when he was returned.

Fred and Cindy Warmbier said that they heard a 'howling' sound when they walked up the steps of the private medical plane carrying their son after it landed in Cincinnati, Ohio back on June 13.

'We walked over to the plane, the engines are still humming, they had just landed…when we got halfway up the steps we heard this howling, involuntary, inhuman sound. We weren't really certain what it was,' Fred said.

They quickly realized it was their son Otto as they saw him screaming and jerking violently on a stretcher. Fred said Otto's mother and sister ran off the plane at the initial sight of him.

'Otto had a shaved head, he had a feeding tube coming out of his nose, he was staring blankly into space, jerking violently,' Fred said.

He said within two days of being home, Otto's fever spiked to 104 degrees and he had a large scar on his right foot.

Cindy said they had only been told that their son had suffered brain damaged when it was revealed the North Korean regime was returning Otto to his family on 'humanitarian release'.

They said the reality of his injuries were much more severe than they could ever have imagined.

'We thought he was in a coma. You couldn't call it a coma,' she said.

'What we pictured, because we're optimists, is that Otto would be asleep and maybe in a medically induced coma and then when our doctors here would work with him and he'd get the best care and love that he would come out of it.

'Our image of Otto, as you know, was of someone just wonderful, beautiful inside and out. And to see how he came home was too much for us.

'I almost passed out but I got it together and I rode in the ambulance with him. I did not want him to be alone anymore. He'd been alone for way too long. We stayed with him and loved him as best as we could.'

His parents said Otto spent his final days jerking and moaning in the tortured state before he died at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on June 19.

The Warmbiers said they have had some time to heal in the three months since they buried their son but decided to speak out after seeing North Korea try to victimize themselves.

Their interview comes amid an escalating war of words between the Trump administration and North Korea. A North Korean official has claimed President Donald Trump has, in effect, declared war, which the White House denied.

'We see North Korea claiming to be a victim and that the world is picking on them and we're here to tell you: North Korea is not a victim. They're terrorists,' Fred said.

'They kidnapped Otto. They tortured him. They intentionally injured him. They are not victims.'

Cindy said she felt Otto had only been sent home because the North Koreans knew he was about to die.

Otto's parents reiterated their belief that North Korea should be listed as a state sponsor of terror.

Fred has previously criticized former president Barack Obama's administration for how little it did for their son, saying officials had counseled the family against speaking out to avoid antagonizing the North Korean regime.

President Donald Trump tweeted shortly after the Warmbier's interview aired, saying: 'Great interview on @foxandfriends with the parents of Otto Warmbier: 1994 - 2017. Otto was tortured beyond belief by North Korea.'

Trump had previously blamed North Korea's 'brutal regime' for Warmbier's plight but it was the first time the president publicly accused North Korea of torture in the case.

US officials have said Trump was personally taken aback by Warmbier's death and his comment Tuesday ratchets up the pressure on Kim Jong-Un's regime.
